Title:: Light curves of 2 superluminous supernovae

Description:: A rare class of 'superluminous' supernovae that are about ten or more times more luminous at their peaks than other types of luminous supernova has recently been found at low to intermediate redshifts. A small subset of these events have luminosities that evolve slowly and result in radiated energies of up to about 1051ergs. Therefore, they are probably examples of 'pair-instability' or 'pulsational pair-instability' supernovae with estimated progenitor masses of 100 to 250 times that of the Sun. These events are exceedingly rare at low redshift, but are expected to be more common at high redshift because the mass distribution of the earliest stars was probably skewed to high values. Here we report the detection of two superluminous supernovae, at redshifts of 2.05 and 3.90, that have slowly evolving light curves. We estimate the rate of events at redshifts of 2 and 4 to be approximately ten times higher than the rate at low redshift. The extreme luminosities of superluminous supernovae extend the redshift limit for supernova detection using present technology, previously 2.36, and provide a way of investigating the deaths of the first generation of stars to form after the Big Bang.

Description:: The nature of galaxy structures on large scales is a key observational prediction for current models of galaxy formation. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the 2dF galaxy survey have revealed a number of structures on 40-150h–1Mpc scales at low redshifts, and some even larger ones. To constrain galaxy number densities, luminosities, and stellar populations in large structures at higher redshift, we have investigated two sheet-like structures of galaxies at z=0.8 and 1.3 spanning 150h–1 comoving Mpc embedded in large quasar groups (LQGs) extending over at least 200h–1Mpc. We present first results of an analysis of these sheet-like structures using two contiguous 1° Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) fields (FUV and NUV) cross-correlated with optical data from the SDSS. We derive a sample of 462 Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidates coincident with the sheets. Using the GALEX and SDSS data, we show that the overall average spectral energy distribution of a LBG galaxy at z∼1 is flat (in fλ) in the rest-frame wavelength range from 1500Å to 4000Å, implying evolved populations of stars in the LBGs. From the luminosity functions we get indications for overdensities in the two LQGs compared to their foreground regions.
