- A sample of G and K giants approximately 4kpc from the Sun, covering the abundance range from solar to extreme halo has been selected without kinematic bias in a field aligned to measure galactic rotation. Accurate abundances, distances, and radial velocities have been measured. This sample has been combined with nonkinematically selected solar neighborhood objects taken from the literature, in order to examine the kinematics of the transition from disk to "thick disk" to halo. The metal-rich objects in the sample, with 0>[Fe/H]>-0.8, rotate rapidly around the galactic center and have low azimuthal velocity dispersion, {sigma}_{phi}_=40+/-10km/s. For objects in the range -0.5>[Fe/H]>-0.8, we find a small value for the asymmetric drift of 35+/-10km/s. We associate these objects with the thick disk, confirming the kinematical results of Ratnatunga and Freeman (1989, Cat.<V/65>) and others. In the abundance range -1.0>[Fe/H]>=-1.6 we find, in addition to objects with normal halo kinematics, objects in a disk configuration, confirming the results of Norris, Bessell, and Pickles (1985ApJS...58..463N). This disk is rotating rapidly, V_rot_=170+/-15km/s, and has a scale height of 1.4+/-0.7kpc, these kinematical and spatial properties are similar to those of the thick disk. We show that these objects have different kinematics from that of the globular clusters and a sample of local RR Lyraes in the same abundance range. This suggests to us that these objects are better associated with the thick disk than the halo, and we refer to them as "metal-weak thick-disk stars". Hence we suggest that the conventional chemical description of the thick disk (Gilmore and Wyse, 1985AJ.....90.2015G) be widened to include stars with abundances as low as [Fe/H]=-1.6. At the galactic plane, the density of these metal-weak thick-disk stars is similar to that of halo stars, so they significantly affect the measurement, from samples selected on abundance, of the components of the velocity ellipsoid for the halo in the solar neighborhood. For the halo giants in our sample we measure {sigma}_{phi}_=102+/-24 and V_rot_=17+/-24km/s. The rotation velocity and velocity ellipsoid for the metal-weak halo in the solar neighborhood have been rederived for objects with [Fe/H]<=-1.6 from the large sample of Norris (1986ApJS...61..667N), thus removing the possibility of contamination by metal-weak thick-disk stars. We derive V_rot_=25+/-15km/s and ({sigma}_r_, {sigma}_{phi}_, {sigma}_{theta}_)=(133+/-8, 98+/-13, 94+/-6)km/s. These values are more consistent with other information about the shape of the halo. - The catalogue of homogeneous photometry of bright stars on the DDO (System McClure and Forrester 1981) is a compilation of DDO photometry of 2196 bright G and K stars prepared from observations made at Kitt Peak National and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatories over the last several years using filter sets well matched to the standard system. The catalogue includes a large number of DDO stars whose data have been taken directly from the standard-star paper of McClure (1976AJ.....81..182M), plus a representative sample of stars selected from the Catalogue of Bright Stars (Hoffleit 1964, see Cat. V/50) and the Catalogue of High-Velocity Stars (Eggen 1964, see Cat. V/11) to have good velocities, spectral types and freedom from companion contamination. The catalogue contains HD Catalogue numbers, DM identifications; and the standard photometric indices of the DDO system. The number of observations from which each index was determined is also given, along with standard errors. - Title:
- Kepler cycle 1 observations of low-mass stars

- We have analyzed Kepler light curves for 849 stars with Teff<=5200K from our Cycle 1 Guest Observer program. We identify six new eclipsing binaries, one of which has an orbital period of 29.91 days and two of which are probably W UMa variables. In addition, we identify a candidate "warm Jupiter" exoplanet. We further examine a subset of 670 sources for variability. Of these objects, 265 stars clearly show periodic variability that we assign to rotation of the low-mass star. At the photometric precision level provided by Kepler, 251 of our objects showed no evidence for variability. We were unable to determine periods for 154 variable objects. We find that 79% of stars with Teff<=5200K are variable. The rotation periods we derive for the periodic variables span the range 0.31days<=Prot<=126.5days. A considerable number of stars with rotation periods similar to the solar value show activity levels that are 100 times higher than the Sun.

- Radial velocities are given for some 900 stars within 15{deg} of the North Galactic Pole, including almost all such stars classified G5 or latter in the Henry-Draper Catalogue (Cat. <III/135>). Luminosities, two-dimensional spectral classes, composition indices, and distances are derived for the majority of the sample through DDO and BV photometry. The radial velocities come from several instruments (see the "Note(2)" section below) ; the BV and DDO photometries were obtained at Mount Laguna Observatory, with the San Diego State University 24-inch Schmidt reflector.

- We present new UBV photoelectric observations of 119 stars in the field of the southern open cluster IC 2488, supplemented by DDO and Washington photometry and Coravel radial velocities for a sample of red giant candidates. Nearly 50% of the stars sampled - including three red giants and one blue straggler - are found to be probable cluster members. Photometric membership probabilities of the red giant candidates show good agreement with those obtained from Coravel data. A mean radial velocity of -2.63+/-0.06km/s is derived for the cluster giants. The reddening across the cluster is found to be uniform, the mean value being E(B-V)=0.24+/-0.04. IC 2488, located at a distance of (1250+/-120) pc from the Sun and 96 pc below the Galactic plane, is most probably not related to the planetary nebula ESO 166-PN21. A metal abundance [Fe/H]=0.10+/-0.06 relative to the Sun is determined from DDO data of the red giant members, in good agreement with the [Fe/H] values derived from five independent Washington abundance indices. An age of 180Myr is determined from the fitting of isochrones computed with convective overshooting for Z=0.019. The isochrone for logt=8.25 reproduces remarkably well not only the morphology of the upper main sequence but also the observed red giant pattern.
