- In this paper, we present a set of photometric observations in 15 colors of stars in the Landolt SA95 field with the BATC (Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut) system. The wavelengths covered by the system range from 300nm to 1000nm. Visual magnitudes of the stars studied in the field are from the 10th to 20th mag. The observational methodology and the data reduction procedures are described. The relationships between the BATC intermediate-band system and the Landolt UBVRI broad band system are obtained. A catalogue of the photometry has been produced which contains the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 3613 stars.

- Rotation periods are increasingly being used to derive ages for cool single field stars. Such ages are based on an empirical understanding of how cool stars spin down, acquired by constructing color-period diagrams (CPDs) for a series of open clusters. Our main aims here are to construct a CPD for M48, to compare this with other clusters of similar age to check for consistency, and to derive a rotational age for M48 using gyrochronology. We monitored M48 photometrically for over 2months with AIP's STELLA.I 1.2m telescope and the WiFSIP 4K imager in Tenerife. Light curves with 3mmag precision for bright (V~14mag) stars were produced and then analysed to provide rotation periods. A cluster CPD has then been constructed. We report 62 rotation periods for cool stars in M48. The CPD displays a clear slow/I-sequence of rotating stars, similar to those seen in the 625Myr-old Hyades and 590Myr-old Praesepe clusters, and below both, confirming that M48 is younger. A similar comparison with the 250Myr-old M34 cluster shows that M48 is older and does not possess any fast/C-sequence G or early K stars like those in M34, although relatively fast rotators do seem to be present among the late-K and M stars. A more detailed comparison of the CPD with rotational evolution models shows that the cluster stars have a mean age of 450Myr, and its (rotating) stars can be individually dated to +/-117Myr (26%). Much of this uncertainty stems from intrinsic astrophysical spread in initial periods, and almost all stars are consistent with a single age of 450Myr. The gyro-age of M48 as a whole is 450+/-50Myr, in agreement with the previously determined isochrone age of 400+/-100Myr.

- We present the results of a study of the dust properties in M31. We analyzed Spitzer Space Telescope, GALEX, and SDSS images constraining some basic properties of the dust in M31: (i) the mass of the dust; (ii) the mean intensity of the radiation field heating the dust; (iii) the abundance of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) particles. We also studied which stellar populations are most likely responsible for the dust heating in M31 analyzing optical and infrared colors and comparing our observations with models which account for the age-dependent dust heating. We found that in most of the regions analyzed stars at least a few Gyr old are the major dust heaters. We then derived the extinction map across the disk of M31.

- The homogeneous spectroscopic determination of the stellar parameters is a mandatory step for transit detections from space. Knowledge of which population the planet hosting stars belong to places constraints on the formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems. We used the FLAMES/GIRAFFE multi-fiber instrument at ESO to spectroscopically observe samples of stars in three CoRoT/Exoplanet fields, namely the LRa01, LRc01, and SRc01 fields, and characterize their stellar populations. We present accurate atmospheric parameters, Teff, logg, [M/H], and [alpha/Fe] derived for 1227 stars in these fields using the MATISSE algorithm. The latter is based on the spectral synthesis methodology and automatically provides stellar parameters for large samples of observed spectra. We trained and applied this algorithm to FLAMES observations covering the MgIb spectral range. It was calibrated on reference stars and tested on spectroscopic samples from other studies in the literature. The barycentric radial velocities and an estimate of the vsini values were measured using cross-correlation techniques. We corrected our samples in the LRc01 and LRa01 CoRoT fields for selection effects to characterize their FGK dwarf stars population, and compiled the first unbiased reference sample for the in-depth study of planet metallicity relationship in these CoRoT fields. We conclude that the FGK dwarf population in these fields mainly exhibit solar metallicity. We show that for transiting planet finding missions, the probability of finding planets as a function of metallicity could explain the number of planets found in the LRa01 and LRc01 CoRoT fields. This study demonstrates the potential of multi-fiber observations combined with an automated classifier such as MATISSE for massive spectral classification.

- We employ the CFHT Megacam camera to survey ~1{deg}^2^ of the southern outer disc of M31, a region which includes the area where Battinelli et al. (2003, Cat. <J/AJ/125/1298>) have identified nearly one thousand C stars. In the outer M31 region not previously surveyed, we identify 361 new C star candidates, having similar photometric properties to the known ones, and confirm the slight decrease in the luminosity of C stars with galactocentric distances. We show that the Sloan g', r', i' filters are a viable approach, comparable to (CN-TiO), to identify C stars. We find that the (g'-r') colours of cool C stars can be so red that prohibitively long g' exposures are needed to acquire faint extragalactic C stars. This makes the Sloan filters a less promising approach to extend a C star survey to several Mpc. Our uniform large field survey detects the edge of M31 disk at ~35kpc. The intermediate-age population, represented by C stars, extends further to ~40kpc.

- We present results of a multifilter survey of the whole Magellanic-type galaxy IC 1613. Narrowband CN and TiO filters are used to identify carbon stars among red giants. We have identified 195 carbon stars, extending up to 15' from the center of the galaxy. We present well-calibrated R and I magnitudes for all stars. The large field surveyed allows a reliable foreground estimate of M stars, leading to a C/M ratio of 0.64, when giants as early as M0 are counted. Analysis of the photometric properties of the C star population reveals a narrow M_I_ distribution with a mean M_I_ of -4.69mag, with a dispersion of +/-0.28. IC 1613 has, for its absolute magnitude, a normal number of C stars.

- We present the latest results of our ongoing four-filter photometric survey of C stars in Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies. Observations of the two low-luminosity dwarf irregular galaxies, Pegasus and DDO 210, revealed 40 and three C stars, respectively, assuming that the reddening of Pegasus is negligible. No C stars were identified in Tucana. Our observations permit the estimation of the color-magnitude diagram contamination by foreground M dwarfs thus yielding reliable C/M ratios. Our R and I photometry of the C stars cannot be used to solve the extinction controversy toward Pegasus. The three C stars in DDO 210 are quite bright when compared with C star populations in other dwarf galaxies. A larger, fainter population in that galaxy seems improbable, however. The statistics of C stars currently on hand for dwarf galaxies show a well-defined trend with the absolute magnitude of dwarf galaxies.

- We used the CFH12K wide field camera to survey the carbon star population of the Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte system using the CN-TiO technique. 149 C stars are identified with a mean <I>=20.28, corresponding to <M_I_>=-4.65, a mean luminosity similar to what we found in other irregular galaxies. Star counts in and around the main body of WLM reveal that its stellar distribution is quite elliptical ({epsilon}=0.58) with major and minor axes of 26' and 11'. Comparison of the density profile of C stars and old red giants shows that their scale lengths differ by only 15% pointing to mixed populations. Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte is found to be unique among dwarf irregular galaxies by having essentially a handful of early-type AGB M stars thus leading to an extreme C/M ratio.

- We present CCD photometry in the Washington system C and T1 passbands down to T1~18.5mag in the field of Tombaugh 1, a little studied open cluster located in the third Galactic quadrant. We measured T1 magnitudes and C-T1 colours for a total of 1351 stars distributed throughout an area of 13.6'x13.6'.
