- By combining high spatial resolution and wide-field spectroscopy performed, respectively, with SINFONI and FLAMES at the ESO/VLT we measured the radial velocities of more than 600 stars in the direction of NGC 6388, a Galactic globular cluster which is suspected to host an intermediate-mass black hole. Approximately 55% of the observed targets turned out to be cluster members. The cluster velocity dispersion has been derived from the radial velocity of individual stars: 52 measurements in the innermost 2", and 276 stars located between 18" and 600". The velocity dispersion profile shows a central value of ~13km/s, a flat behavior out to ~60" and a decreasing trend outward. The comparison with spherical and isotropic models shows that the observed density and velocity dispersion profiles are inconsistent with the presence of a central black hole more massive than ~2000M_{sun}_. These findings are at odds with recent results obtained from integrated light spectra, showing a velocity dispersion profile with a steep central cusp of 23-25km/s at r<2" and suggesting the presence of a black hole with a mass of ~1.7x10^4^M_{sun}_. We also found some evidence of systemic rotation with amplitude A_rot_~8km/s in the innermost 2" (0.13pc), decreasing to A_rot_=3.2km/s at 18"<r<160".

- We present multi-epoch, high-dispersion, optical spectra obtained with the Michigan/Magellan Fiber System of 126 and 125 Sun-like stars in the young clusters NGC 2516 (141Myr) and NGC 2422 (73Myr). We determine stellar properties including radial velocity (RV), Teff, [Fe/H], [{alpha}/Fe], and the line-of-sight rotation rate, v_r_sin(i), from these spectra. Our median RV precision of 80m/s on individual epochs that span a temporal baseline of 1.1yr enables us to investigate membership, stellar binarity, and search for sub-stellar companions. We determine membership probabilities and RV variability probabilities for our sample along with candidate companion orbital periods for a select subset of stars. We identify 81 RV members in NGC 2516, 27 spectroscopic binaries (17 previously identified as photometric binaries), and 16 other stars that show significant RV variability after accounting for average stellar jitter found to be at the 74m/s level. In NGC 2422 we identify 57 members, 11 spectroscopic binaries, and 3 other stars that show significant RV variability after accounting for an average jitter of 138m/s. We use Monte Carlo simulations to verify our stellar jitter measurements, determine the proportion of exoplanets and stellar companions to which we are sensitive, and estimate companion mass limits for our targets. We also report mean cluster metallicity, velocity, and velocity dispersion based on our member targets and identify 58 non-member stars as RV variables - 24 of which have RV amplitudes that imply stellar or brown-dwarf mass companions. Finally, we note the discovery of a separate RV clustering of stars in our NGC 2422 sample.

- Due to their volatile nature, when sulphur and zinc are observed in external galaxies, their determined abundances represent the gas-phase abundances in the interstellar medium. This implies that they can be used as tracers of the chemical enrichment of matter in the Universe at high redshift. Comparable observations in stars are more difficult and, until recently, plagued by small number statistics. We wish to exploit the Gaia ESO Survey (GES) data to study the behaviour of sulphur and zinc abundances of a large number of Galactic stars, in a homogeneous way. By using the UVES spectra of the GES sample, we are able to assemble a sample of 1301 Galactic stars, including stars in open and globular clusters in which both sulphur and zinc were measured. We confirm the results from the literature that sulphur behaves as an alpha-element. We find a large scatter in [Zn/Fe] ratios among giant stars around solar metallicity. The lower ratios are observed in giant stars at Galactocentric distances less than 7.5kpc. No such effect is observed among dwarf stars, since they do not extend to that radius. Given the sample selection, giants and dwarfs are observed at different Galactic locations, and it is plausible, and compatible with simple calculations, that Zn-poor giants trace a younger population more polluted by SN Ia yields. It is necessary to extend observations in order to observe both giants and dwarfs at the same Galactic location. Further theoretical work on the evolution of zinc is also necessary.

- Our study is a follow-up of the SACY project, an extended high spectral resolution survey of more than two thousand optical counterparts to X-ray sources in the southern hemisphere targeted to search for young nearby association. Nine associations have either been newly identified, or have had their member list revised. Groups belonging to the Sco-Cen-Oph complex are not considered in the present study. These nine associations, with ages of between about 6Myr and 70Myr, form an excellent sample to study the Li depletion in the pre-main sequence (PMS) evolution. In the present paper, we investigate the use of Li abundances as an independent clock to constrain the PMS evolution. Using our measurements of the equivalent widths of the Li resonance line and assuming fixed metallicities and microturbulence, we calculated the LTE Li abundances for 376 members of various young associations. In addition, we considered the effects of their projected stellar rotation.

- We discuss the characteristics of known extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars in the Galaxy using the Stellar Abundances for Galactic Archaeology (SAGA) data base. We find the transition of the initial mass function to be at [Fe/H]~-2 from the viewpoint of the distribution of carbon abundance and the frequency of carbon-enhanced stars. Analyses of carbon-enhanced stars in our sample suggest that nucleosynthesis in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars can contribute to carbon enrichment in a different way depending on whether the metallicity is above or below [Fe/H]~-2.5, which is consistent with the current models of stellar evolution at low metallicity.

- Asteroseismology has the capability of precisely determining stellar properties that would otherwise be inaccessible, such as radii, masses, and thus ages of stars. When coupling this information with classical determinations of stellar parameters, such as metallicities, effective temperatures, and angular diameters, powerful new diagnostics for Galactic studies can be obtained. The ongoing Stromgren survey for Asteroseismology and Galactic Archaeology (SAGA) has the goal of transforming the Kepler field into a new benchmark for Galactic studies, similar to the solar neighborhood. Here we present the first results from a stripe centered at a Galactic longitude of 74{deg} and covering latitude from about 8{deg} to 20{deg}, which includes almost 1000 K giants with seismic information and the benchmark open cluster NGC 6819. We describe the coupling of classical and seismic parameters, the accuracy as well as the caveats of the derived effective temperatures, metallicities, distances, surface gravities, masses, and radii. Confidence in the achieved precision is corroborated by the detection of the first and secondary clumps in a population of field stars with a ratio of 2 to 1 and by the negligible scatter in the seismic distances among NGC 6819 member stars. An assessment of the reliability of stellar parameters in the Kepler Input Catalog is also performed, and the impact of our results for population studies in the Milky Way is discussed, along with the importance of an all-sky Stromgren survey.

- We construct a sample of 75863 star-forming galaxies with robust metallicity and star formation rate (SFR) measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7, from which we select a clean sample of compact group (CG) galaxies. The CGs are defined to be close configurations of at least four galaxies that are otherwise apparently isolated. Our selection results in a sample of 112 spectroscopically identified CG galaxies, which can be further divided into groups that are either embedded within a larger structure, such as a cluster or large group, or truly isolated systems. The CGs then serve as a probe into the influence of large-scale environment on a galaxy's evolution, while keeping the local density fixed at high values. W

- Star-forming galaxies with nebular HeII emission contain very energetic ionizing sources of radiation, which can be considered as analogs to the major contributors of the reionization of the Universe in early epochs. It is therefore of great importance to provide a reliable absolute scale for the equivalent effective temperature (T*) for these sources. We study a sample of local (z<0.2) star-forming galaxies showing optical nebular HeII emission using the so-called softness diagrams, involving emission lines of two elements in two consecutive stages of ionization (e.g., [SII]/[SIII] vs. [OII]/[OIII]). We use for the first time the HeI/HeII ratio in these diagrams in order to explore the higher range of T* expected in these objects, and to investigate the role of possible mechanisms driving the distribution of galaxy points in these diagrams. We build grids of photoionization models covering different black-body temperatures, model cluster atmospheres, and density-bounded geometries to explain the conditions observed in the sample. We verified that the use of the softness diagrams including the emission-line ratio HeI/HeII combined with black-body photoionization models can provide an absolute scale of T* for these objects. The application of a Bayesian-like code indicates T* in the range 50-80kK for the sample of galaxies, with a mean value higher than 60kK. The average of these high temperature values can only be reproduced using cluster model populations with nearly metal-free stars, although such ionizing sources cannot explain either the highest T* values, beyond 1{sigma}, or the dispersion observed in the softness diagrams. According to our photoionization models, most sample galaxies could be affected to some extent by ionizing photon leaking, presenting a mean photon absorption fraction of 26% or higher depending on the metallicity assumed for the ionizing cluster. The entire range of HeI/HeII, [SII]/[SIII], and [OII]/[OIII] ratios for these HeII-emitting galaxies is reproduced with our models, combining nearly metal-free ionizing clusters and photon leaking under different density-bounded conditions.

- Abundance parameters have been derived from scanner observations of 229 stars. Observations were made with the Wampler photoelectric spectrum scanner (Wampler, 1966) on Lick Observatory's Crossley and 120inch telescopes. Data reductions were performed at UC Berkeley on the IBM 7094 computer using programs by L.V. Kuhi and B.J. Taylor. The method of reduction and the photometric standard system are described by Spinrad and Taylor (1969AJ.....72..320S). The file "color.dat" (tables 5 and 6 in the publication) gives colors between 3880 and 7400{AA} for program stars and survey stars, normalized so that I(5360)=1000. The file "block.dat" gives the blocking fractions for program stars.

- Low-resolution spectroscopy obtained with FORS2 at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) has been used for the measurement of individual metal abundances ([Fe/H]) for 110 variable stars, including 107 RR Lyrae stars and one anomalous Cepheid, and to trace the metal distribution of the oldest stellar component in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The RR Lyrae stars are spread over a 15x15arcmin^2^ area around the galaxy centre.
