- Globular clusters show star-to-star abundance variations for light elements that are not yet well understood. The preferred explanation involves a self-enrichment scenario, within which two subsequent generations of stars co-exist in globular clusters. Observations of chemical abundances in the main sequence and sub-giant branch stars allow us to investigate the signature of this chemically processed material without the complicating effects caused by stellar evolution and internal mixing. Our main goal is to investigate the carbon-nitrogen anti-correlation with low-resolution spectroscopy of 20-50 stars fainter than the first dredge-up in seven Galactic globular clusters (NGC288, NGC1851, NGC5927, NGC6352, NGC6388, and Pal12) with different properties. We complemented our observations with 47Tuc archival data, with four additional clusters from the literature (M15, M22, M55, NGC362), and with additional literature data on NGC288.

- We have studied age dependent features in optical and near-infrared spectra of candidate members to the cluster (such as alkali lines and accretion associated indicators). In addition, we have complemented that study with the analysis of other youth indicators like X-ray emission or mid-infrared excess. We have confirmed the membership to Collinder 69 of ~90 photometric candidate members. As a byproduct we have determined a temperature scale for young M, very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. We have assembled one of the most complete Initial Mass Functions from 0.016 to 20M_{sun}_. And, finally, we have studied the implications of the spatial distribution of the confirmed members on the proposed mechanisms of brown dwarfs formation.

- We present a description of the data reduction methods and the derived catalog of more than 1600 X-ray point sources from the exceptionally deep 2003 January Chandra X-Ray Observatory (Chandra) observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster and embedded populations around OMC-1. The observation was obtained with Chandra's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) and has been nicknamed the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). With an 838ks exposure made over a continuous period of 13.2 days, the COUP observation provides the most uniform and comprehensive data set on the X-ray emission of normal stars ever obtained in the history of X-ray astronomy.

- Cyg OB2 is one of the most massive associations of O-type stars in our Galaxy. Despite the large interstellar reddening towards Cyg OB2, many studies, spanning a wide range of wavelengths, have been conducted to more clearly understand this association. X-ray observations provide a powerful tool to overcome the effect of interstellar absorption and study the most energetic processes associated with the stars in Cyg OB2. We analyse XMM-Newton data to investigate the X-ray and UV properties of massive O-type stars as well as low-mass pre-main sequence stars in Cyg OB2.

- Massive OB stars are critical to the ecology of galaxies, and yet our knowledge of OB stars in the Milky Way, fainter than V~12, remains patchy. Data from the VST Photometric H-alpha Survey (VPHAS+) permit the construction of the first deep catalogues of blue excess-selected OB stars, without neglecting the stellar field. A total of 14900 candidates with 2MASS cross-matches are blue-selected from a 42 square-degree region in the Galactic longitude range 282{deg}<l<293{deg} Spectral energy distribution fitting is performed on these candidates' combined VPHAS+ u/g/r/i and 2MASS J/H/K magnitudes. This delivers: effective temperature constraints, statistically separating O from early-B stars; high-quality extinction parameters, A_0_ and R_V_ (random errors typically <0.1). The high confidence O-B2 candidates number 5915 and a further 5170 fit to later B spectral type. Spectroscopy of 276 of the former confirms 97% of them. The fraction of emission line stars among all candidate B stars is 7-8%. Greyer (R_V_>3.5) extinction laws are ubiquitous in the region, over the distance range 2.5-3kpc to ~10kpc. Near prominent massive clusters, R_V_ tends to rise, with particularly large and chaotic excursions to R_V_~5 seen in the Carina Nebula. The data reveal a hitherto unnoticed association of 108 O-B2 stars around the O5If+ star LSS 2063 (l=289.77{deg}, b=-1.22{deg}). Treating the OB star scale-height as a constant within the thin disk, we find an orderly mean relation between extinction (A_0_) and distance in the Galactic longitude range, 287.6{deg}<l< 293.5{deg}, and infer the subtle onset of thin-disk warping. A halo around NGC 3603, roughly a degree in diameter, of ~500 O-B2 stars with 4<A_0_(mag)<7 is noted.

- We present a catalogue of new spectral types for hot, luminous stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The catalogue contains 4161 objects, giving an order of magnitude increase in the number of SMC stars with published spectroscopic classifications. The targets are primarily B- and A-type stars (2862 and 853 objects respectively), with 1 Wolf-Rayet, 139 O-type, and 306 FG stars, sampling the main sequence to ~mid-B. The selection and classification criteria are described, and objects of particular interest are discussed, including UV-selected targets from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) experiment, Be and B[e] stars, `anomalous A supergiants', and composite-spectrum systems. We examine the incidence of Balmer-line emission, and the relationship between H-gamma equivalent width and absolute magnitude for BA stars.

- In a sample of 114 diffuse cloud sightlines spanning a wide range of interstellar environments, we find the equivalent widths of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) {lambda}6196.0 and {lambda}6613.6 to be extremely well correlated, with a correlation coefficient of 0.986. A maximum likelihood functional relationship analysis shows that the observations are consistent with a perfect correlation if the observational errors, which are dominated by continuum placement and other systematics such as interfering lines, have been underestimated by a factor of 2. The quality of this correlation far exceeds other previously studied correlations, such as that between the {lambda}5780.5 DIB and either the color excess or the atomic hydrogen column density. The unusually tight correlation between these two DIBs would seem to suggest that they might represent the first pair of DIBs known to be due to the same molecular carrier. However, further theoretical work will be required to determine whether the different linewidths and band shapes of these two DIBs can be consistent with a common carrier. If the two DIBs do not in fact share the same molecular carrier, their two carriers must be chemically very closely related.

- Stellar kinematics provides the key to understanding the formation process and dynamical evolution of stellar systems. Here, we present a kinematic study of the massive star-forming region (SFR) W4 in the Cassiopeia OB6 association using the Gaia Data Release 2 and high-resolution optical spectra. This SFR is composed of a core cluster (IC1805) and a stellar population distributed over 20pc, which is a typical structural feature found in many OB associations. According to a classical model, this structural feature can be understood in the context of the dynamical evolution of a star cluster. The core-extended structure exhibits internally different kinematic properties. Stars in the core have an almost isotropic motion, and they appear to reach virial equilibrium given their velocity dispersion (0.9{+/-}0.3km/s) comparable to that in a virial state (~0.8km/s). On the other hand, the distributed population shows a clear pattern of radial expansion. From the N-body simulation for the dynamical evolution of a model cluster in subvirial state, we reproduce the observed structure and kinematics of stars. This model cluster experiences collapse for the first 2Myr. Some members begin to radially escape from the cluster after the initial collapse, eventually forming a distributed population. The internal structure and kinematics of the model cluster appear similar to those of W4. Our results support the idea that the stellar population distributed over 20pc in W4 originate from the dynamical evolution of IC1805.

- We report the definite spectroscopic identification of ~40 OB supergiants, giants, and main-sequence stars in the central parsec of the Galaxy. Detection of their absorption lines has become possible with the high spatial and spectral resolution and sensitivity of the adaptive optics integral field spectrometer SPIFFI/SINFONI on the ESO VLT. Several of these OB stars appear to be helium- and nitrogen-rich.
