- Some HII regions surrounding young stellar clusters contain tiny dusty clouds, which on photos look like dark spots or teardrops against a background of nebular emission. From our collection of H{alpha} images of 10 HII regions gathered at the Nordic Optical Telescope, we found 173 such clouds, which we call "globulettes", since they are much smaller than normal globules and form a distinct class of objects. Many globulettes are quite isolated and located far from the molecular shells and elephant trunks associated with the regions. Others are attached to the trunks (or shells), suggesting that globulettes may form as a consequence of erosion of these larger structures. None of our objects appear to contain stellar objects. The globulettes were measured for position, dimension, and orientation, and we find that most objects are smaller than 10kAU.

- Small molecular cloudlets are abundant in many HII regions surrounding newborn stellar clusters. In optical images these so-called globulettes appear as dark silhouettes against the bright nebular background. We aim to make an inventory of the population of globulettes in the Carina nebula complex, and to derive sizes and masses for comparisons with similar objects found in other HII regions. The globulettes were identified from H{alpha} images collected at the Hubble Space Telescope.

- We have derived the mass distribution of galaxy cluster Abell 1689 within 0.3h^-1^_70_Mpc of the cluster centre using its strong lensing (SL) effect on 32 background galaxies, which are mapped in altogether 107 multiple images. The multiple images are based on some from the literature with modifications to both include new and exclude some of the original image systems. The cluster profile is explored further out to ~2.5h^-1^_70_Mpc with weak lensing (WL) shear measurements from the literature. The masses of ~200 cluster galaxies are measured with the Fundamental Plane (FP) in order to model accurately the small-scale mass structure in the cluster. The cluster galaxies are modelled as elliptical truncated isothermal spheres. The scalings of the truncation radii with the velocity dispersions of galaxies are assumed to match those of: (i) field galaxies; and (ii) theoretical expectations for galaxies in dense environments. The dark matter (DM) component of the cluster is described by either non-singular isothermal ellipsoids (NSIE) or elliptical versions of the universal DM profile (elliptical Navarro, Frenk & White, ENFW). To account for substructure in the DM we allow for two DM haloes.

- We present the results of applying a percolation algorithm to the initial release of the Two Micron All Sky Survey Extended Source Catalog, using subsequently measured redshifts for almost all of the galaxies with K<11.25mag. This group catalog is based on the first near-IR all-sky flux-limited survey that is complete to |b|=5{deg}. We explore the dependence of the clustering on the length and velocity scales involved. The paper describes a group catalog, complete to a limiting redshift of 104km/s, created by maximizing the number of groups containing three or more members. A second catalog is also presented, created by requiring a minimum density contrast of {delta}{rho}/{rho}>=80 to identify groups. We identify known nearby clusters in the catalogs and contrast the groups identified in the two catalogs. We examine and compare the properties of the determined groups and verify that the results are consistent with the UZC-SSRS2 and northern CfA redshift survey group catalogs. The all-sky nature of the catalog will allow the development of a flow-field model based on the density field inferred from the estimated cluster masses.

- We present 109-115GHz (3mm) wide-field spectral line observations of ^12^CO, ^13^CO and C^18^O J=1-0 molecular emission and 5.5 and 8.8GHz (6 and 3cm) radio continuum emission towards the high-mass star-forming complex known as G305. The morphology of G305 is dominated by a large evacuated cavity at the centre of the complex driven by clusters of O stars surrounded by molecular gas. Our goals are to determine the physical properties of the molecular environment and reveal the relationship between the molecular and ionized gas and star formation in G305. This is in an effort to characterize the star-forming environment and constrain the star formation history in an attempt to evaluate the impact of high-mass stars on the evolution of the G305 complex. Analysis of CO emission in G305 reveals 156 molecular clumps with the following physical characteristics; excitation temperatures ranging from 7 to 25K, optical depths of 0.2-0.9, H_2_) column densities of 0.1-4.0x10^22^cm^-2^, clump masses ranging from 10^2^ to 10^4^M_{sun}_ and a total molecular mass of >3.5x10^5^M_{sun}_. The 5.5 and 8.8GHz radio continuum emission reveals an extended low surface brightness ionized environment within which we identify 15 large-scale features with a further eight smaller sources projected within these features. By comparing to mid-infrared emission and archival data, we identify nine HII regions, seven compact HII regions, one UC HII region and four extended regions. The total integrated flux of the radio continuum emission at 5.5GHz is ~ 180Jy corresponding to a Lyman continuum output of 2.4x10^50^photons/s. We compare the ionized and molecular environment with optically identified high-mass stars and ongoing star formation, identified from the literature. Analysis of this data set reveals a star formation rate of 0.008-0.016M_{sun}_/yr and efficiency of 7-12%, allows us to probe the star formation history of the region and discuss the impact of high-mass stars on the evolution of G305.

- Radial mass-to-light ratio gradients cause the half-mass and half-light radii of galaxies to differ, potentially biasing studies that use half-light radii. Here we present the largest catalog to date of galaxy half-mass radii at z>1: 7006 galaxies in the CANDELS fields at 1.0<=z<=2.5. The sample includes both star-forming and quiescent galaxies with stellar masses 9.0<=log(M_*_/M_{sun}_)<=11.5. We test three methods for calculating half-mass radii from multiband PSF-matched Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging: two based on spatially resolved spectral energy distribution modeling, and one that uses a rest-frame color profile. All three methods agree, with scatter <~0.3dex. In agreement with previous studies, most galaxies in our sample have negative color gradients (the centers are redder than the outskirts, and r_e,mass_<r_e,light_). We find that color gradient strength has significant trends with increasing stellar mass, half-light radius, U-V color, and stellar mass surface density. These trends have not been seen before at z>1. Furthermore, color gradients of star-forming and quiescent galaxies show a similar redshift evolution: they are flat at z>~2, then steeply decrease as redshift decreases. This affects the galaxy mass-size relation. The normalizations of the star-forming and quiescent r_mass_-M_*_ relations are 10%-40% smaller than the corresponding r_light_-M_*_ relations; the slopes are ~0.1-0.3dex shallower. Finally, the half-mass radii of star-forming and quiescent galaxies at M_*_=10^10.5^M_{sun}_ only grow by ~1% and ~8% between z~2.25 and z~1.25. This is significantly less than the ~37% and ~47% size increases found when using the half-light radius.

- As part of a broader effort to characterize the population of star-forming galaxies in the local universe, we have carried out an H{alpha}+[NII] imaging survey for an essentially volume-limited sample of galaxies within 11Mpc of the Milky Way. This first paper describes the design of the survey, the observation, data processing, and calibration procedures, and the characteristics of the galaxy sample. The main product of the paper is a catalog of integrated H{alpha} fluxes, luminosities, and equivalent widths for the galaxies in the sample. We briefly discuss the completeness properties of the survey and compare the distribution of the sample and its star formation properties to other large H{alpha} imaging surveys. These data form the foundation for a series of follow-up studies of the star formation properties of the local volume, and the properties and duty cycles of star formation bursts in dwarf galaxies.

- We present new H{alpha}+[NII] imaging data of late-type galaxies in the Herschel Reference Sample aimed at studying the star formation properties of a K-band-selected, volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies. The H{alpha}+[NII] data are corrected for [NII] contamination and dust attenuation using different recipes based on the Balmer decrement and the 24um luminosities. We show that the H{alpha} luminosities derived with different corrections give consistent results only whenever the the uncertainty on the estimate of the Balmer decrement is [C(H{beta})]<=0.1. We use these data to derive the star formation rate of the late-type galaxies of the sample, and compare these estimates to those determined using independent monochromatic tracers (FUV, radio continuum) or the output of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting codes. This comparison suggests that the 24um based dust extinction correction for the H{alpha} data might be non universal, and that it should be used with caution in all objects with a low star formation activity, where dust heating can be dominated by the old stellar population. Furthermore, because of the sudden truncation of the star formation activity of cluster galaxies occurring after their interaction with the surrounding environment, the stationarity conditions required to transform monochromatic fluxes into star formation rates might not always be satisfied in tracers other than the H{alpha} luminosity. In a similar way, the parametrisation of the star formation history generally used in SED fitting codes might not be adequate for these recently interacting systems. We then use the derived star formation rates to study the SFR luminosity distribution and the typical scaling relations of the late-type galaxies of the HRS. We observe a systematic decrease of the specific star formation rate with increasing stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, and metallicity. We also observe an increase of the asymmetry and smoothness parameters measured in the H{alpha}-band with increasing SSFR, probably induced by an increase of the contribution of giant HII regions to the H{alpha} luminosity function in star-forming low-luminosity galaxies.
