- An H-alpha survey, using a focal reducer and narrow-band interference filters, has resulted in the detection of nearly a thousand HII regions in M31. The catalog gives their positions, dimensions, and surface brightnesses. The surface brightnesses are on an absolute scale; the photographic measures were calibrated by using photoelectric measures from two different sources. The detection limit reached corresponds to an emission measure of 40cm^-6^pc at a temperature of 10000K.

- Nearly 500 radio continuum sources near the Galactic plane at declinations greater than -37 degrees were examined for radio recombination line emission to see if they might be HII regions. A total of 462 were detected, about half of these for the first time. The data are presented in an extensive table. Among the newly discovered nebulae are several with recombinations lines so narrow that their electron temperature must be less than 4600 K. In one case the line width (in several transitions) is only 11.6 km/s, requiring electron temperatures less than about 2900 K.

- We present the classification of 717 radio-continuum sources from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) Catalogue of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). All 717 sources have been categorised into one of three groups: supernova remnants (SNRs), HII regions and background sources. In total, we name 71 sources as HII regions (or candidates) and 21 sources as SNRs (or candidates). Six sources are named as either HII regions or background sources and two are candidate radio planetary nebulae. One source is coincident with an X-ray binary. We classify 616 objects as background sources and present their statistics.

- We present a 30-50GHz survey of Sagittarius B2(N) conducted with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) with 5 - 10 arcsec resolution. We analyze the spectra towards three HII regions that have foreground molecular gas in Sgr B2. Towards the most line-dense region, we detect >500 spectral line components, >90% of which are assigned to H and He recombination lines and 53 firmly identified molecular species (not including isotopologues). The data reveal extremely subthermally excited molecular gas in Sgr B2 absorbing against the continuum background, as well as molecular line emission from two hot cores in Sgr B2(N). They also also contain line-of-sight absorption by ~15 molecules observed in translucent gas in the Galactic Center, bar, and intervening spiral arm clouds, revealing the complex chemistry and clumpy structure of this gas. Formamide (NH_2_CHO) is detected for the first time in a translucent cloud.

- In a survey of 65 galaxies, Gao & Solomon (2004ApJS..152...63G) found a tight linear relation between the infrared luminosity (L_IR_, a proxy for the star formation rate) and the HCN(1-0) luminosity (L_HCN_). Wu et al. (2005ApJ...635L.173W) found that this relation extends from these galaxies to the much less luminous Galactic molecular high-mass star-forming clumps (~1pc scales), and posited that there exists a characteristic ratio L_IR_/L_HCN_ for high-mass star-forming clumps. The Gao-Solomon relation for galaxies could then be explained as a summation of large numbers of high-mass star-forming clumps, resulting in the same L_IR_/L_HCN_ ratio for galaxies. We test this explanation and other possible origins of the Gao-Solomon relation using high-density tracers (including HCN(1-0), N_2_H^+^(1-0), HCO^+^(1-0), HNC(1-0), HC_3_N(10-9), and C_2_H(1-0)) for ~300 Galactic clumps from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90GHz (MALT90) survey. The MALT90 data show that the Gao-Solomon relation in galaxies cannot be satisfactorily explained by the blending of large numbers of high-mass clumps in the telescope beam. Not only do the clumps have a large scatter in the L_IR_/L_HCN_ ratio, but also far too many high-mass clumps are required to account for the Galactic IR and HCN luminosities. We suggest that the scatter in the L_IR_/L_HCN_ ratio converges to the scatter of the Gao-Solomon relation at some size-scale >~1kpc. We suggest that the Gao-Solomon relation could instead result from of a universal large-scale star formation efficiency, initial mass function, core mass function, and clump mass function.

- We have conducted a 3-mm molecular-line survey towards 570 high-mass star-forming clumps, using the Mopra telescope. The sample is selected from the 10000 clumps identified by the ATLASGAL (APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy) survey and includes all of the most important embedded evolutionary stages associated with massive star formation, classified into five distinct categories (quiescent, protostellar, young stellar objects, HII regions, and photon-dominated regions). The observations were performed in broad-band mode with frequency coverage of 85.2-93.4GHz and a velocity resolution of ~0.9km/s, detecting emission from 26 different transitions. We find significant evolutionary trends in the detection rates, integrated line intensities, and abundances of many of the transitions and also identify a couple of molecules that appear to be invariant to changes in the dust temperature and evolutionary stage [N_2_H^+^ (1-0) and HN^13^C (1-0)]. We use the K-ladders for CH_3_C_2_H (5-4) and CH_3_CH (5-4) to calculate the rotation temperatures and find around one-third of the quiescent clumps have rotation temperatures that suggest the presence of an internal heating source. These sources may constitute a population of very young protostellar objects that are still dark at 70um and suggest that the fraction of truly quiescent clumps may only be a few per cent. We also identify a number of line ratios that show a strong correlation with the evolutionary stage of the embedded objects and discuss their utility as diagnostic probes of evolution.

- By matching infrared-selected, massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) and compact HII regions in the Red MSX Source survey to massive clumps found in the submillimetre ATLASGAL (APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy) survey, we have identified ~1000 embedded young massive stars between 280{deg}<l<350{deg} and 10{deg}<l<60{deg} with |b|<1.5{deg}. Combined with an existing sample of radio-selected methanol masers and compact HII regions, the result is a catalogue of ~1700 massive stars embedded within ~1300 clumps located across the inner Galaxy, containing three observationally distinct subsamples, methanol-maser, MYSO and HII-region associations, covering the most important tracers of massive star formation, thought to represent key stages of evolution.

- We present a complete sample of molecular clumps containing compact and ultracompact HII (UC HII) regions between l=10{deg} and 60{deg} and |b|<1{deg}, identified by combining the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy submm and CORNISH radio continuum surveys with visual examination of archival infrared data. Our sample is complete to optically thin, compact and UC HII regions driven by a zero-age main-sequence star of spectral type B0 or earlier embedded within a 1000M_{sun}_ clump. In total we identify 213 compact and UC HII regions, associated with 170 clumps. Unambiguous kinematic distances are derived for these clumps and used to estimate their masses and physical sizes, as well as the Lyman continuum fluxes and sizes of their embedded HII regions.

- We study ten molecular transitions obtained from an unbiased 3mm molecular line survey using the IRAM 30m telescope toward 409 compact dust clumps identified by the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) to better understand the photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated with these clumps. The main goal of this study is to investigate whether the abundances of the selected molecules show any variations resulting from the PDR chemistry in different clump environments. We selected HCO, HOC^+^, C_2_H, c-C_3_H_2_, CN, H^13^CN, HC^15^N, and HN^13^C as PDR tracers, and H^13^CO^+^ and C^18^O as dense gas tracers. By using estimated optical depths of C_2_H and H^13^CN and assuming optically thin emission for other molecular transitions, we derived the column densities of those molecules and their abundances. To assess the influence of the presence and strength of ultra- violet radiation, we compare abundances of three groups of the clumps: HII regions, infrared bright non-HII regions, and infrared dark non-HII regions. We detected C^18^O, H^13^CO^+^, C_2_H, c-C_3_H_2_, CN, and HN^13^C toward most of the observed dust clumps (detection rate >94%), and H^13^CN is also detected with a detection rate of 75%. On the other hand, HCO and HC^15^N show detection rates of 32% and 39%, respectively, toward the clumps, which are mostly associated with HII region sources: Detection rates of HCO and HC^15^N toward the HII regions are 66% and 79%. We find that the abundances of HCO, CN, C_2_H, and c-C_3_H_2_ decrease as the H_2_ column density increases, indicating high visual extinction, while those of high-density tracers (i.e., H^13^CO^+^ and HC^15^N) are constant. In addition, N(HCO)/N(H^13^CO^+^) ratios significantly decrease as H_2_ column density increases, and, in particular, 82 clumps have X(HCO)>=10^-10^ and N(HCO)/N(H^13^CO^+^)>~1, which are indications of far-ultraviolet (FUV) chemistry. This suggests the observed HCO abundances are likely associated with FUV radiation illuminating the PDRs. We also find that high N(c-C_3_H_2_)/N(C_2_H) ratios found for HII regions that have high HCO abundances (>~10^-10^) are associated with more evolved clumps with high L_bol_/M_clump_. This trend might be associated with gain-surface processes, which determine the initial abundances of these molecules, and time-dependent effects in the clumps corresponding to the envelopes around dense PDRs and HII regions. In addition, some fraction of the measured abundances of the small hydrocarbons of the HII sources may be the result of the photodissociation of PAH molecules.

- We present a complete catalog of H I emission and absorption spectrum pairs, toward H II regions, detectable within the boundaries of the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS I), a total of 252 regions. The catalog is presented in graphical, numerical, and summary formats. We demonstrate an application of this new data set through an investigation of the locus of the Near 3kpc Arm.
