- We have derived elemental abundances of three field red horizontal branch stars using high-resolution (R~45000), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N>~200) H- and K-band spectra obtained with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS). We have determined the abundances of 21 elements, including {alpha} (Mg, Si, Ca, S), odd-Z (Na, Al, P, K), Fe-group (Sc, Ti, Cr, Co, Ni), neutron-capture (Ce, Nd, Yb), CNO-group elements. S, P, and K are determined for the first time in these stars. H- and K-band spectra provide a substantial number of S I lines, which potentially can lead to a more robust exploration of the role of sulfur in the cosmochemical evolution of the Galaxy. We have also derived ^12^C/^13^C ratios from synthetic spectra of the first-overtone ^12^CO (2-0) and (3-1) and ^13^CO (2-0) lines near 23440{AA} and ^13^CO (3-1) lines at about 23730{AA}. Comparison of our results with the ones obtained from the optical region suggests that the IGRINS high-resolution H- and K-band spectra offer more internally self-consistent line abundances of the same species for several elements, especially the {alpha}-elements. This in turn provides more reliable abundances for the elements with analytical difficulties in the optical spectral range.

- Metal-rich globular clusters provide important tracers of the formation of our Galaxy. Moreover, and not less important, they are very important calibrators for the derivation of properties of extra-galactic metal-rich stellar populations. Nonetheless, only a few of the metal-rich globular clusters in the Milky Way have been studied using high-resolution stellar spectra to derive elemental abundances. Additionally, Rosenberg et al. identified a small group of metal-rich globular clusters that appeared to be about 2 billion years younger than the bulk of the Milky Way globular clusters. However, it is unclear if like is compared with like in this dataset as we do not know the enhancement of alpha-elements in the clusters and the amount of alpha-elements is well known to influence the derivation of ages for globular clusters. We present a study of elemental abundances for alpha and iron-peak elements for nine HB stars in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 6352. The elemental abundances are based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the UVES spectrograph on VLT. The elemental abundances have been derived using standard LTE calculations and stellar parameters have been derived from the spectra themselves by requiring ionizational as well as excitational equilibrium. We find that NGC 6352 has [Fe/H]=-0.55, is enhanced in the alpha-elements to about +0.2dex for Ca, Si, and Ti relative to Fe. For the iron-peak elements we find solar values. Based on the spectroscopically derived stellar parameters we find that an E(B-V)=0.24 and (m-M).

- We present a new detailed abundance study of field red horizontal branch (RHB) and blue horizontal branch (BHB) non-variable stars. High resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio echelle spectra of 11 RHB and 12 BHB were obtained with the McDonald 2.7m telescope, and the RHB sample was augmented by reanalysis of spectra of 25 stars from a recent survey. We derived stellar atmospheric parameters based on spectroscopic constraints and computed relative abundance ratios for 24 species of 19 elements.

- A metallicity, chemical composition, and kinematic survey has been conducted for a sample of 340 candidate field red horizontal-branch (RHB) stars. Spectra with high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio were gathered with the McDonald Observatory 2.7 m Tull and the Hobby-Eberly Telescope echelle spectrographs, and were used to determine effective temperatures, surface gravities, microturbulent velocities, [Fe/H] metallicities, and abundance ratios [X/Fe] for seven {alpha} and Fe-group species. The derived temperatures and gravities confirm that at least half of the candidates are true RHB stars, with (average) parameters T_eff_~5000 K and log g~2.5. From the {alpha} abundances alone, the thin and thick Galactic populations are apparent in our sample. Space motions for 90% of the program stars were computed from Hipparcos and Gaia parallaxes and proper motions. Correlations between chemical compositions and Galactic kinematics clearly indicate the existence of both thin-disk and thick-disk RHB stars.

- We have derived relations between FWHMs and equivalent widths of metallic absorption lines in the spectra of RR Lyrae stars to estimate new upper limits on the axial equatorial rotational velocities of RR Lyrae and metal-poor red horizontal branch (RHB) stars. We have also derived the variations of RR Lyrae macroturbulent velocities during the pulsation cycles. In RRab cycles, the line widths are dominated by phase-dependent convolutions of axial rotation and macroturbulence, which we designate as V_macrot_. The behavior of V_macrot_ is remarkably uniform among the RRab stars, but the behavior of V_macrot_ among RRc stars varies strongly from star to star. The RRab stars exhibit an upper limit on V_macrot_ of 5+/-1 km/s with weak evidence of an anticorrelation with T_eff_. The RRc minima range from 2 to 12 km/s. The abrupt decline in large rotations with decreasing T_eff_ at the blue boundary of the instability strip and the apparently smooth continuous variation among the RRab and RHB stars suggests that HB stars gain/lose surface angular momentum on timescales that are short compared to HB lifetimes. The V_macrot_ values for our metal-poor RHB stars agree well with those derived by Fourier analysis of an independent but less metal-poor sample of Carney et al. (2008AJ....135..892C); they conform qualitatively to the expectations of Tanner et al. (2013ApJ...778..117T). A general conclusion of our investigation is that surface angular momentum as measured by V_rot_sin(i) is not a reliable indicator of total stellar angular momentum anywhere along the HB.

- We introduce a Bayesian method for fitting faint, resolved stellar spectra in order to obtain simultaneous estimates of redshift and stellar-atmospheric parameters. We apply the method to thousands of spectra - covering 5160-5280{AA} at resolution R~20000 - that we have acquired with the MMT/Hectochelle fibre spectrograph for red giant and horizontal branch candidates along the line of sight to the Milky Way's dwarf spheroidal satellite in Draco. The observed stars subtend an area of ~4deg^2^, extending ~3 times beyond Draco's nominal 'tidal' radius. For each spectrum, we tabulate the first four moments - central value, variance, skewness and kurtosis - of posterior probability distribution functions representing estimates of the following physical parameters: line-of-sight velocity (v_los_), effective temperature (T_eff_), surface gravity (logg) and metallicity ([Fe/H]). After rejecting low-quality measurements, we retain a new sample consisting of 2813 independent observations of 1565 unique stars, including 1879 observations for 631 stars with (as many as 13) repeat observations. Parameter estimates have median random errors of v_los_=0.88km/s, T_eff_=162K, {sigma}logg=0.37dex and {sigma}[Fe/H]=0.20dex. Our estimates of physical parameters distinguish ~470 likely Draco members from interlopers in the Galactic foreground.

- We identify 51 blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars, 12 possible BHB stars and 58 RR Lyrae stars in Anticentre fields. Their selection does not depend on their kinematics. Light curves and ephemerides are given for seven previously unknown RR Lyrae stars. All but four of the RR Lyrae stars are of Oosterhoff type I.

- We use a sample of blue horizontal branch (BHB) stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (Cat. II/294) to explore the structure of the tidal tails from the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy. We use a method yielding BHB star candidates with up to ~70% purity from photometry alone. The resulting sample has a distance precision of roughly 5% and can probe distances in excess of 100kpc. Using this sample, we identify a possible extension to the trailing arm at distances of 60-80kpc from the Sun with an estimated significance of at least 3.8{sigma}. Current models predict that a distant "returning" segment of the debris stream should exist, but place it substantially closer to the Sun where no debris is observed in our data. Exploiting the distance precision of our tracers, we estimate the mean line-of-sight thickness of the leading arm to be ~3kpc, and show that the two "bifurcated" branches of the debris stream differ by only 1-2kpc in distance. With a spectroscopic very pure BHB star subsample, we estimate the velocity dispersion in the leading arm, 37km/s, which is in reasonable agreement with models of Sgr disruption. We finally present a sample of high-probability Sgr BHB stars in the leading arm of Sgr, selected to have distances and velocities consistent with Sgr membership, to allow further study.

- We derive new constraints on the mass of the Milky Way's dark matter halo, based on 2401 rigorously selected blue horizontal-branch halo stars from SDSS DR6. This sample enables construction of the full line-of-sight velocity distribution at different galactocentric radii. To interpret these distributions, we compare them to matched mock observations drawn from two different cosmological galaxy formation simulations designed to resemble the Milky Way. This procedure results in an estimate of the Milky Way's circular velocity curve to ~60kpc, which is found to be slightly falling from the adopted value of 220km/s at the Sun's location, and implies M(<60kpc)=(4.0+/-0.7)x10^11^M_{sun}_.
