- We present and analyze the positions, distances, and radial velocities for over 4000 blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars in the Milky Way's halo, drawn from SDSS DR8. We search for position-velocity substructure in these data, a signature of the hierarchical assembly of the stellar halo. Using a cumulative "close pair distribution" as a statistic in the four-dimensional space of sky position, distance, and velocity, we quantify the presence of position-velocity substructure at high statistical significance among the BHB stars: pairs of BHB stars that are close in position on the sky tend to have more similar distances and radial velocities compared to a random sampling of these overall distributions. We make analogous mock observations of 11 numerical halo formation simulations, in which the stellar halo is entirely composed of disrupted satellite debris, and find a level of substructure comparable to that seen in the actually observed BHB star sample. This result quantitatively confirms the hierarchical build-up of the stellar halo through a signature in phase (position-velocity) space. In detail, the structure present in the BHB stars is somewhat less prominent than that seen in most simulated halos, quite possibly because BHB stars represent an older sub-population. BHB stars located beyond 20kpc from the Galactic center exhibit stronger substructure than at r_gc_<20kpc.

- We have selected 556 red horizontal branch stars along the streams of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy from Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopic data using a theoretical model. The metallicity and {alpha}-element distributions are investigated for stars in the Sgr streams and for Galactic stars at the same locations. We find that the Sgr stars have two peaks in the metallicity distribution while the Galactic stars have a more prominent metal-poor peak. Meanwhile, [{alpha}/Fe] ratios of the Sgr stars are lower than those of the Galactic stars. Among the Sgr stars, we find a difference in the metallicity distribution between the leading and trailing arms of the Sgr tidal tails. The metallicity and [{alpha}/Fe] distribution of the leading arm is similar to that of the Galaxy. The trailing arm is composed mainly of a metal-rich component and [{alpha}/Fe] is obviously lower than that of the Galactic stars. The metallicity gradient is -(1.8+/-0.3)x10^-3^dex/deg in the first wrap of the trailing arm and -(1.5+/-0.4)x10^-3^dex/deg in the first wrap of the leading arm. No significant gradient exists along the second wraps of the leading or trailing arms. It seems that the Sgr dwarf galaxy initially lost the metal-poor component in the second wrap (older) arms due to the tidal force of our Galaxy and then the metal-rich component is disrupted in the first wrap (younger) arms. Finally, we found that the velocity dispersion of the trailing arm from 88{deg}<{Lambda}_{sun}_<112{deg} is {sigma}=9.808+/-1.0km/s, which is consistent with previous work in the literature.

- We present results from an analysis of medium-resolution spectroscopy and UBV photometry for a sample of 1121 A-type stars in the halo (and disk) of the Galaxy. A previously developed calibration technique is used to assign estimates of effective temperature, surface gravity, and stellar metal abundance, as parametrized by [Fe/H]. Radial velocities are reported with an accuracy of {~}10 km.s^-1^. Distance estimates are obtained for the stars with well-determined luminosity classes. Note that although we refer to "A-type" stars, which dominate the present sample, the present data set includes roughly 100 stars of later spectral types, as a result of the temperature range we have chosen to explore in this paper (6000 K {<=} T_eff_ {<=} 10,000 K).

- In this paper, we present a detailed high-resolution spectroscopic study of post main sequence stars in the globular cluster (GC) M68. Our sample, which covers a range of 4000K in T_eff_, and 3.5dex in log(g), is comprised of members from the red giant, red horizontal, and blue horizontal branch, making this the first high-resolution GC study covering such a large evolutionary and parameter space. Initially, atmospheric parameters were determined using photometric as well as spectroscopic methods, both of which resulted in unphysical and unexpected T_eff_, log(g), {xi}_t_, and [Fe/H] combinations. We therefore developed a hybrid approach that addresses most of these problems, and yields atmospheric parameters that agree well with other measurements in the literature. Furthermore, our derived stellar metallicities are consistent across all evolutionary stages, with <[Fe/H]>=-2.42 ({sigma}=0.14) from 25 stars. Chemical abundances obtained using our methodology also agree with previous studies and bear all the hallmarks of GCs, such as a Na-O anti-correlation, constant Ca abundances, and mild r-process enrichment.

- We present the results of a spectral analysis of a large sample of subdwarf B stars selected from follow-up observations of candidates from the Hamburg Quasar Survey. Table 4 summarizes the results (effective temperatures, gravities, and helium abundances) of our analysis. Additionally, the equatorial and galactical coordinates, the B magnitudes and extinctions, the derived radial velocities, the absolute visual magnitudes, the distances from earth and from the galactic plane, and the references are given for all programme stars.

- We present new radial velocity (RV) measurements of old (horizontal branch) and intermediate-age (red clump) stellar tracers in the Carina dwarf spheroidal. They are based on more than 2200 low-resolution spectra collected with VIMOS at Very Large Telescope (VLT). The targets are faint (20<~V<~21.5mag), but the accuracy at the faintest limit is <=9km/s. These data were complemented with RV measurements either based on spectra collected with FORS2 and FLAMES/GIRAFFE at VLT or available in the literature. We ended up with a sample of 2748 stars and among them, 1389 are candidate Carina stars. We found that the intermediate-age stellar component shows a well-defined rotational pattern around the minor axis. The western and the eastern side of the galaxy differ by +5 and -4km/s when compared with the main RV peak. The old stellar component is characterized by a larger RV dispersion and does not show evidence of the RV pattern. We compared the observed RV distribution with N-body simulations for a former disky dwarf galaxy orbiting a giant Milky Way-like galaxy. We rotated the simulated galaxy by 60{deg} with respect to the major axis, we kept the observer on the orbital plane of the dwarf and extracted a sample of stars similar to the observed one. Observed and predicted V_rot_/{sigma} ratios across the central regions are in remarkable agreement. This evidence indicates that Carina was a disky dwarf galaxy that experienced several strong tidal interactions with the Milky Way. Owing to these interactions, Carina transformed from a disky to a prolate spheroid and the rotational velocity transformed into random motions.

- We use double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars from the MACHO variable star database of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to estimate its distance, by utilizing photometric data, linear pulsation and stellar atmosphere models. If we set E_(B-V)_=0.11 and [M/H]=-1.5 for LMC, we get M-m=18.52mag. The fact that the distance moduli obtained in this and in our former studies of cluster RRd and Small Magellanic Cloud beat Cepheids agree so well, implies that the only serious source of error is the zero point of the temperature scale, which should not have larger than +/-0.10mag effect on the distance modulus.

- Period study of 321 fundamental mode RR Lyrae type stars (RRab), which had appropriate data in ASAS and SuperWASP surveys, was performed to complement and extend the list of known Blazhko stars in galactic field with bright stars up to 12.5 mag in maximum light. An individual approach was applied to each studied star. Permanent visual supervision was maintained to each procedure in data analysis (data cleaning, frequency spectra examination) to avoid missing any possible sign of the Blazhko effect. Period analysis was performed using Period04 software.

- We study the debated contribution from thermally pulsing asymptotic-giant-branch (TP-AGB) stars in evolutionary population synthesis models. We investigate the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a sample of 51 spectroscopically confirmed, high-z (1.3<z_spec_<2.7), galaxies using three evolutionary population synthesis models with strong, mild and light TP-AGB. Our sample is the largest of spectroscopically confirmed galaxies on which such models are tested so far. Galaxies were selected as passive, but we model them using a variety of star formation histories in order not to be dependent on this pre-selection. We find that the observed SEDs are best fitted with a significant contribution of TP-AGB stars or with substantial dust attenuation. Without including reddening, TP-AGB-strong models perform better and deliver solutions consistent within 1{sigma} from the best-fitted ones in the vast majority of cases. Including reddening, all models perform similarly. Using independent constraints from observations in the mid- and far-IR, we show that low/negligible dust attenuation, i.e. E(B-V)<~0.05, should be preferred for the SEDs of passively selected galaxies. Given that TP-AGB-light models give systematically older ages for passive galaxies, we suggest number counts of passive galaxies at higher redshifts as a further test to discriminate among stellar population models.
