- We present a spectrophotometric analysis of galaxies belonging to the dynamically young, massive cluster RX J0152.7-1357 at z~0.84, aimed at understanding the effects of the cluster environment on the star formation history (SFH) of cluster galaxies and the assembly of the red sequence (RS). We use VLT/FORS spectroscopy, ACS/WFC optical, and NTT/SofI near-IR data to characterize SFHs as a function of color, luminosity, morphology, stellar mass, and local environment from a sample of 134 spectroscopic members. In order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, individual galaxy spectra are stacked according to these properties. Moreover, the D4000, Balmer, CN3883, Fe4383, and C4668 indices are also quantified.

- We present optical spectroscopy for an X-ray and optical flux-limited sample of 677 XMM-Newton selected targets covering the 2deg^2^ Cosmic Evolution Survey field, with a yield of 485 high-confidence redshifts. The majority of the spectra were obtained over three seasons (2005-2007) with the Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph instrument on the Magellan (Baade) telescope. We also include in the sample previously published Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra and supplemental observations with MMT/Hectospec. We detail the observations and classification analyses. The survey is 90% complete to flux limits of f_0.5-10keV_>8x10^-16-^erg/cm^2^/s and i^+^_AB_<22, where over 90% of targets have high-confidence redshifts. Making simple corrections for incompleteness due to redshift and spectral type allows for a description of the complete population to i^+^_AB_<23. The corrected sample includes a 57% broad emission line (Type 1, unobscured) active galactic nucleus (AGN) at 0.13<z<4.26, 25% narrow emission line (Type 2, obscured) AGN at 0.07<z<1.29, and 18% absorption line (host-dominated, obscured) AGN at 0<z<1.22 (excluding the stars that made up 4% of the X-ray targets). We show that the survey's limits in X-ray and optical fluxes include nearly all X-ray AGNs (defined by L_0.5-10keV_>3x10^42^erg/s) to z<1, of both optically obscured and unobscured types.

- In this work, we present our machine learning classification algorithm for identifying strong gravitational lenses from wide-area surveys using convolutional neural networks; LensFlow. We train and test the algorithm using a wide variety of strong gravitational lens configurations from simulations of lensing events. Images are processed through multiple convolutional layers that extract feature maps necessary to assign a lens probability to each image. LensFlow provides a ranking scheme for all sources that could be used to identify potential gravitational lens candidates by significantly reducing the number of images that have to be visually inspected. We apply our algorithm to the HST/ACS i-band observations of the COSMOS field and present our sample of identified lensing candidates. The developed machine learning algorithm is more computationally efficient and complimentary to classical lens identification algorithms and is ideal for discovering such events across wide areas from current and future surveys such as LSST and WFIRST.

- We present imaging data and photometry for the COSMOS survey in 15 photometric bands between 0.3 and 2.4m. These include data taken on the Subaru 8.3m telescope, the KPNO and CTIO 4m telescopes, and the CFHT 3.6m telescope. Special techniques are used to ensure that the relative photometric calibration is better than 1% across the field of view. The absolute photometric accuracy from standard-star measurements is found to be 6%. The absolute calibration is corrected using galaxy spectra, providing colors accurate to 2% or better. Stellar and galaxy colors and counts agree well with the expected values. Finally, as the first step in the scientific analysis of these data we construct panchromatic number counts which confirm that both the geometry of the universe and the galaxy population are evolving.

- We present the first catalog of 67 strong galaxy-galaxy lens candidates discovered in the 1.64deg^2^ Hubble Space Telescope COSMOS survey. Twenty of these systems display multiple images or strongly curved large arcs. Our initial search is performed by visual inspection of the data and is restricted, for practical considerations, to massive early-type lens galaxies with arcs found at radii smaller than ~5". Simple mass models are constructed for the best lens candidates, and our results are compared to the strong lensing catalogs of the SLACS survey and the CASTLES database. These new strong galaxy-galaxy lensing systems constitute a valuable sample to study the mass distribution of early-type galaxies and their associated dark matter halos.

- The Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Probe (DEEP) is a multiphase research program dedicated to the study of the formation and evolution of galaxies and of large-scale structure in the distant universe. This paper describes the first five-year phase, denoted DEEP1. A series of 10 DEEP1 papers will discuss a range of scientific topics (e.g., the study of photometric and spectral properties of a general distant galaxy survey, the evolution observed in galaxy populations of varied morphologies). The observational basis for these studies is the Groth Survey Strip field, a 127arcmin^2^ region that has been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in both broad I-band and V-band optical filters and with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck Telescopes. Catalogs of photometric and structural parameters have been constructed for 11,547 galaxies and stars at magnitudes brighter than 29, and spectroscopy has been conducted for a magnitude-color weighted subsample of 818 objects.

- Using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained deep optical images reaching well below the oldest main-sequence turnoff in six fields of the Andromeda Galaxy. The fields fall at four positions on the southeast minor axis, one position in the giant stellar stream, and one position on the northeast major axis. These data were obtained as part of three large observing programs designed to probe the star formation history of the stellar population in various structures of the galaxy. In this paper, we present the images, catalogs, and artificial star tests for these observing programs as a supplement to the analyses published previously. These high-level science products are also archived at the Multimission Archive at the Space Telescope Science Institute.

- We present new measures of the evolving scaling relations between stellar mass, luminosity and rotational velocity for a morphologically inclusive sample of 129 disk-like galaxies with z_AB_<22.5 in the redshift range 0.2<z<1.3, based on spectra from DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope, multi-color Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys photometry, and ground-based Ks-band imaging. A unique feature of our survey is the extended spectroscopic integration times, leading to significant improvements in determining characteristic rotational velocities for each galaxy. Rotation curves are reliably traced to the radius where they begin to flatten for ~90% of our sample, and we model the HST-resolved bulge and disk components in order to accurately de-project our measured velocities, accounting for seeing and dispersion. We demonstrate the merit of these advances by recovering an intrinsic scatter on the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation a factor of two to three less than in previous studies at intermediate redshift and comparable to that of locally determined relations. With our increased precision, we find that the relation is well established by <z>~1, with no significant evolution to <z>~0.3, {Delta}M_*_~0.04+/-0.07dex. A clearer trend of evolution is seen in the B-band Tully-Fisher relation corresponding to a decline in luminosity of {Delta}M_B_~0.85+/-0.28 magnitudes at fixed velocity over the same redshift range, reflecting the changes in star formation over this period. As an illustration of the opportunities possible when gas masses are available for a sample such as ours, we show how our dynamical and stellar mass data can be used to evaluate the likely contributions of baryons and dark matter to the assembly history of spiral galaxies.

- The 3D-HST and CANDELS programs have provided WFC3 and ACS spectroscopy and photometry over ~900arcmin^2^ in five fields: AEGIS, COSMOS, GOODS-North, GOODS-South, and the UKIDSS UDS field. All these fields have a wealth of publicly available imaging data sets in addition to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data, which makes it possible to construct the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of objects over a wide wavelength range. In this paper we describe a photometric analysis of the CANDELS and 3D-HST HST imaging and the ancillary imaging data at wavelengths 0.3-8{mu}m. Objects were selected in the WFC3 near-IR bands, and their SEDs were determined by carefully taking the effects of the point-spread function in each observation into account. A total of 147 distinct imaging data sets were used in the analysis.

- We report on the first results of a new study aimed at understanding the diversity and evolutionary history of distant galactic bulges in the context of now well-established trends for pure spheroidal galaxies. To this end, bulges have been isolated for a sample of 137 spiral galaxies within the redshift range 0.1<z<1.2 in the GOODS fields. Using proven photometric techniques, we determine the characteristic parameters (size, surface brightness, profile shape) of both the disk and bulge components in our sample. In agreement with earlier work that utilized aperture colors, distant bulges show a broader range of optical colors than would be the case for passively evolving populations. To quantify the amount of recent star formation necessary to explain this result, we used DEIMOS to secure stellar velocity dispersions for a sizeable fraction of our sample. This has enabled us to compare the fundamental plane of our distant bulges with that for spheroidal galaxies in a similar redshift range.
