- Description:
- We present the type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) sample extracted from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey's first observations of 21000 spectra in 1.75{deg}^2^. This sample, which is purely magnitude-limited and free of morphological or color-selection biases, contains 130 broad-line AGN (BLAGN) spectra with redshift up to 5. Our data are divided into a wide (I_AB_<=22.5) and a deep (I_AB_<=24) subsample containing 56 and 74 objects, respectively. Because of its depth and selection criteria, this sample is uniquely suited for studying the population of faint type-1 AGN. Our measured surface density (~472+/-48 BLAGN per square degree with I_AB_<=24) is significantly higher than that of any other optically selected sample of BLAGN with spectroscopic confirmation. By applying a morphological and color analysis to our AGN sample, we find that (1) ~23% of the AGN brighter than I_AB_=22.5 are classified as extended, and this percentage increases to ~42 for those with z<1.6; (2) a non-negligible fraction of our BLAGN are lying close to the color-space area occupied by stars in the u*-g' versus g'-r' color-color diagram. This leads us to the conclusion that the classical optical-ultraviolet preselection technique, if employed at such deep magnitudes (I_AB_=22.5) in conjuction with a preselection of point-like sources, can miss up to ~35% of the AGN population. Finally, we present a composite spectrum of our sample of objects. While the continuum shape is very similar to that of the SDSS composite at short wavelengths, it is much redder than that of the SDSS composite at {lambda}>=3000{AA}. We interpret this as due to significant contamination from emission of the host galaxies, as expected from the faint absolute magnitudes sampled by our survey.

- Description:
- Deep representative surveys of galaxies at different epochs are needed to make progress in understanding galaxy evolution. We describe the completed VIMOS VLT Deep Survey and the final data release of 35016 galaxies and type-I AGN with measured spectroscopic redshifts covering all epochs up to redshift z~6.7, in areas from 0.142 to 8.7 square degrees, and volumes from 0.5x10^6^ to 2x10^7^h^-3^*Mpc^3^. We selected samples of galaxies based solely on their i-band magnitude reaching i_AB_=24.75. Spectra were obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT integrating 0.75h, 4.5h, and 18h for the Wide, Deep, and Ultra-Deep nested surveys, respectively. We demonstrate that any "redshift desert" can be crossed successfully using spectra covering 3650<={lambda}<=9350{AA}. A total of 1263 galaxies were again observed independently within the VVDS and from the VIPERS and MASSIV surveys. They were used to establish the redshift measurements reliability, to assess completeness in the VVDS sample, and to provide a weighting scheme taking the survey selection function into account. We describe the main properties of the VVDS samples, and the VVDS is compared to other spectroscopic surveys in the literature. In total we have obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 34594 galaxies, 422 type-I AGN, and 12430 Galactic stars. The survey enabled identifying galaxies up to very high redshifts with 4669 redshifts in 1<=z_spec_<=2, 561 in 2<=z_spec_<=3, and 468 with z_spec_>3, and specific populations like Lyman-{alpha} emitters were identified out to z=6.62. We show that the VVDS occupies a unique place in the parameter space defined by area, depth, redshift coverage, and number of spectra. The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey provides a comprehensive survey of the distant universe, covering all epochs since z~6, or more than 12Gyr of cosmic time, with a uniform selection, which is the largest such sample to date. A wealth of science results derived from the VVDS have shed new light on the evolution of galaxies and AGN and on their distribution in space over this large cosmic time. The VVDS further demonstrates that large deep spectroscopic redshift surveys over all these epochs in the distant Universe are a key tool to observational cosmology. To enhance the legacy value of the survey, a final public release of the complete VVDS spectroscopic redshift sample is available at http://cesam.lam.fr/vvds .

- Description:
- We present the optical and infrared identifications of the 266 radio sources detected at 20cm with the Very Large Array in the Chandra Deep Field-South. Using deep i-band Advanced Camera for Surveys, R-band Wide Field Imager, K-band SOFI NTT, K-band ISAAC VLT and Spitzer imaging data, we are able to find reliable counterparts for 254 (~95%) VLA sources. Twelve radio sources remain unidentified, and three of them are "empty fields". Using literature and our own data we are able to assign redshifts to 186 (~70%) radio sources: 108 are spectroscopic redshifts and 78 are reliable photometric redshifts. Based on the rest-frame colors and morphological distributions of the host galaxies, we find evidences for a change in the submillijansky radio source population: (1) above ~0.08mJy early-type galaxies are dominating and (2) at flux densities below ~0.08mJy, starburst galaxies become dominant.

- VRI photometry of Abell 3921 galaxies

- Date:

- CDS
- Description:
- We present the analysis and results of a new VRI photometric and spectroscopic survey of the central ~1.8x1.2Mpc^2^ region of the galaxy cluster A3921 (z=0.094). We detect the presence of two dominant clumps of galaxies with a mass ratio of ~5: a main cluster centred on the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG) (A3921-A), and an NW sub-cluster (A3921-B) hosting the second brightest cluster galaxy. The distorted morphology of the two sub-clusters suggests that they are interacting, while the velocity distribution of 104 confirmed cluster members does not reveal strong signatures of merging.

- Description:
- We present physical properties of radio galaxies (RGs) with f_1.4GHz_>1mJy discovered by Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) and Very Large Array Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey. For 1056 FIRST RGs at 0<z<=1.7 with HSC counterparts in about 100deg^2^, we compiled multi-wavelength data of optical, near-infrared (IR), mid-IR, far-IR, and radio (150MHz). We derived their color excess (E(B-V)_*_), stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), IR luminosity, the ratio of IR and radio luminosity (q_IR_), and radio spectral index ({alpha}_radio_) that are derived from the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE. We also estimated Eddington ratio based on stellar mass and integration of the best-fit SEDs of active galactic nucleus (AGN) component. We found that E(B-V)_*_, SFR, and IR luminosity clearly depend on redshift while stellar mass, q_IR_, and {alpha}_radio_ do not significantly depend on redshift. Since optically faint (i_AB_>=21.3) RGs that are newly discovered by our RG survey tend to be high redshift, they tend to not only have a large dust extinction and low stellar mass but also have high SFR and AGN luminosity, high IR luminosity, and high Eddington ratio compared with optically bright ones. The physical properties of a fraction of RGs in our sample seem to differ from a classical view of RGs with massive stellar mass, low SFR, and low Eddington ratio, demonstrating that our RG survey with HSC and FIRST provides us curious RGs among entire RG population.

- WISE and SDSS-DR7 data in 69 galaxy clusters
- Short Name:

- CDS
- Description:
- We present results from a systematic study of star formation in local galaxy clusters using 22um data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The 69 systems in our sample are drawn from the Cluster Infall Regions Survey, and all have robust mass determinations. The all-sky WISE data enable us to quantify the amount of star formation, as traced by 22um, as a function of radius well beyond R_200_, and investigate the dependence of total star formation rate upon cluster mass. We find that the fraction of star-forming galaxies increases with cluster radius but remains below the field value even at 3R_200_. We also find that there is no strong correlation between the mass-normalized total specific star formation rate and cluster mass, indicating that the mass of the host cluster does not strongly influence the total star formation rate of cluster members.

- WISE/DEIMOS Redshift Catalog DR2 & extended data
- Short Name:

- CDS
- Description:
- The WISE satellite surveyed the entire sky multiple times in four infrared (IR) wavelengths (3.4, 4.6, 12, and 22{mu}m). This all-sky IR photometric survey makes it possible to leverage many of the large publicly available spectroscopic redshift surveys to measure galaxy properties in the IR. While characterizing the cross-matching of WISE data to a single survey is a straightforward process, doing it with six different redshift surveys takes a fair amount of space to characterize adequately, because each survey has unique caveats and characteristics that need addressing. This work describes a data set that results from matching five public redshift surveys with the AllWISE data release, along with a reanalysis of the data described in Lake+ (2012, J/AJ/143/7). The combined data set has an additional flux limit of 80{mu}Jy (19.14 AB mag) in WISE's W1 filter, imposed in order to limit it to targets with high completeness and reliable photometry in the AllWISE data set. Consistent analysis of all of the data is only possible if the color bias discussed in Ilbert+ (2004MNRAS.351..541I) is addressed (e.g., the techniques explored in Lake+ 2017AJ....153..189L). The sample defined herein is used in a companion paper in this series to measure the luminosity function of galaxies at 2.4{mu}m rest-frame wavelength, and the selection process of the sample is optimized for this purpose.

- WISE MIR properties of galaxies in compact groups
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/835/280
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We study the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of galaxies in compact groups and their environmental dependence using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data. We use a volume-limited sample of 670 compact groups and their 2175 member galaxies with M_r_<-19.77 and 0.01<z<0.0741, drawn from Sohn+ (2016, J/ApJS/225/23), which were identified using a friends-of-friends algorithm. Among the 2175 galaxies, 1541 galaxies are detected at WISE 12um with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 3. Among the 1541 galaxies, 433 AGN-host galaxies are identified by using both optical and MIR classification schemes. Using the remaining 1108 non-AGN galaxies, we find that the MIR [3.4]-[12] colors of compact group early-type galaxies are on average bluer than those of cluster early-type galaxies. When compact groups have both early- and late-type member galaxies, the MIR colors of the late-type members in those compact groups are bluer than the MIR colors of cluster late-type galaxies. As compact groups are located in denser regions, they tend to have larger early-type galaxy fractions and bluer MIR color galaxies. These trends are also seen for neighboring galaxies around compact groups. However, compact group member galaxies always have larger early-type galaxy fractions and bluer MIR colors than their neighboring galaxies. Our findings suggest that the properties of compact group galaxies depend on both internal and external environments of compact groups, and that galaxy evolution is faster in compact groups than in the central regions of clusters.

- WISE MIR variability in gamma-ray Seyfert 1 gal.
- Short Name:
- J/ApJS/255/10
- Date:
- 11 Mar 2022
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Fermi-LAT's detection of {gamma}-rays from narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) has received increasing attention. Understanding these {gamma}-NLS1s is of interest because they have some properties similar to blazars, which are known to show rapid and large-amplitude variability. Based on the largest sample of {gamma}-NLS1s (25 sources), we carried out a systematic search for rapid mid-infrared (MIR, 3.4 and 4.6{mu}m) variability using the multiepoch data of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We also compared a few variability properties between {gamma}-NLS1s and {gamma}-ray blazars. Our main results are as follows. (1) Thirteen {gamma}-NLS1s showed significant (>3{sigma}) rapid variability in at least one of the two MIR bands. The MIR emission of these sources is dominated by the synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons in the jet. (2) The {gamma}-NLS1s with flat radio spectra are more variable than those not detected in {gamma}-rays. (3) The {gamma}-NLS1s tend to show smaller amplitude of variability as well as lower duty cycle relative to {gamma}-ray blazars. (4) The {gamma}-NLS1s tend to show a trend of bluer-when-brighter on both intraday and long timescales, similar to {gamma}-ray blazars. (5) The {gamma}-NLS1s that are more variable on long timescales have larger amplitudes of variability and higher duty cycles on intraday timescales. (6) In the majority of cases, the {gamma}-NLS1s fall in the WISE Gamma-ray Blazar Strip (WGS). However, we noted migrations outside of the WGS due to significant variability.

- X-ray & MIR AGNs in Stripe 82 with eBOSS spectra
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/876/50
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We report the results of a Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV eBOSS program to target X-ray sources and mid-infrared-selected Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates in a 36.8deg^2^ region of Stripe 82. About half this survey (15.6deg^2^) covers the largest contiguous portion of the Stripe 82 X-ray survey. This program represents the largest spectroscopic survey of AGN candidates selected solely by their WISE colors. We combine this sample with X-ray and WISE AGNs in the field identified via other sources of spectroscopy, producing a catalog of 4847 sources that is 82% complete to r~22. Based on X-ray luminosities or WISE colors, 4730 of these sources are AGNs, with a median sample redshift of z~1. About 30% of the AGNs are optically obscured (i.e., lack broad lines in their optical spectra). BPT analysis, however, indicates that 50% of the WISE AGNs at z<0.5 have emission line ratios consistent with star-forming galaxies, so whether they are buried AGNs or star-forming galaxy contaminants is currently unclear. We find that 61% of X-ray AGNs are not selected as mid-infrared AGNs, with 22% of X-ray AGNs undetected by WISE. Most of these latter AGNs have high X-ray luminosities (Lx>10^44^erg/s), indicating that mid-infrared selection misses a sizable fraction of the highest luminosity AGNs, as well as lower luminosity sources where AGN-heated dust is not dominating the mid-infrared emission. Conversely, ~58% of WISE AGNs are undetected by X-rays, though we do not find that they are preferentially redder than the X-ray-detected WISE AGNs.
