- We present the results of optical spectroscopic identifications of a bright subsample of 2-10keV hard X-ray-selected sources from the ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey in the northern sky (AMSSn). The flux limit of the subsample is 3x10^-13^erg/s/cm^2^ in the 2-10keV band. All but one of the 87 hard X-ray-selected sources are optically identified, with AGNs (including broad-line AGNs, narrow-line AGNs, and three BL Lac objects), seven clusters of galaxies, and one galactic star. It is the largest complete sample of hard X-ray-selected AGNs at the bright flux limit. Amounts of absorption to their nuclei are estimated to be hydrogen column densities (NH) of up to 3x10^23^cm^-2^ from their X-ray spectra. Optical properties of X-ray absorbed AGNs with N_H_>1x10^22^cm^-2^ indicate the effects of dust absorption: at redshifts z<0.6, AGNs without broad H{beta} emission lines have significantly larger NH-values than AGNs with broad H{beta} emission lines. At z>0.6, the X-ray absorbed AGNs have a large hard X-ray to optical flux ratio (logf_2-10keV_/f_R_>+1). However, three X-ray absorbed z>0.6 AGNs show strong broad lines. In combination with hard X-ray-selected AGN samples from the ASCA Large Sky Survey, the ASCA Deep Survey in the Lockman Hole, and Chandra Deep Field North, the luminosity distributions of absorbed (N_H_>1x10^22^cm^-2^) and less-absorbed (N_H_<1x10^22^cm^-2^) AGNs are compared.

- We present star formation activity in the infrared dark cloud (IRDC) G53.2, a remarkable IRDC located at Galactic coordinates (l,b)~(53.2{deg},0.0{deg}) based on the census of young stellar object (YSO) candidates. IRDC G53.2 was previously identified as several IRDCs in mid-IR images, but it is in fact a long (>~45pc) cloud, well consistent with a CO cloud at v~23km/s (or at d~1.7kpc). We present a point-source catalog of IRDC G53.2 that contains ~370 sources from our photometry of the Spitzer MIPS 24{mu}m data and Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) Catalog. The classification of the identified sources based on their spectral index and control field analysis to remove field star contamination reveals that IRDC G53.2 is an active star-forming region with ~300 YSO candidates. We compare the YSO classification based on spectral index, mid-IR colors, and the wavelength range used, which results in consistent classification, except for flat-spectrum objects, with some ambiguity between Class I and II. Comparison of the YSO population in IRDC G53.2 with those of other nearby star-forming clusters indicates that they are similar in age; on the other hand, stronger association with mid-IR stellar sources in IRDC G53.2 compared with other IRDCs indicates that IRDC G53.2 is at a later evolutionary stage among IRDCs. Spatial distribution of the YSO candidates in IRDC G53.2 shows a good correlation with ^13^CO column density and far-IR emission, and earlier-class objects tend to be more clustered in the regions with higher density.

- We have performed mid-IR photometry of the young open cluster NGC 2264 using the images obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera and Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer instruments and presented a normalized classification scheme of young stellar objects in various color-color diagrams to make full use of the information from multicolor photometry. These results are compared with the classification scheme based on the slope of the spectral energy distribution (SED). From the spatial distributions of Class I and II stars, we have identified two subclusterings of Class I objects in the CONE region of Sung et al. (Cat. J/AJ/135/441). The disked stars in the other star-forming region S Mon are mostly Class II objects. In addition, we have derived a somewhat higher value of the primordial disk fraction for NGC 2264 members located below the main pre-main-sequence locus (so-called BMS stars). This result supports the idea that BMS stars are young stars with nearly edge-on disks.

- We used the large photometric database of the ASTEP program, whose primary goal was to detect exoplanets in the southern hemisphere from Antarctica, to search for eclipsing binaries (EcBs) and variable stars. 673 EcBs and 1166 variable stars were detected, including 31 previously known stars. The resulting online catalogs give the identification, the classification, the period, and the depth or semi-amplitude of each star. Data and light curves for each object are available at http://astep-vo.oca.eu/.

- We present ASTRODEEP-GS43, a new multiwavelength photometric catalogue of the GOODS-South field, which builds and improves upon the previously released CANDELS catalogue. We provide photometric fluxes and corresponding uncertainties in 43 optical and infrared bands (25 wide and 18 medium filters), as well as photometric redshifts and physical properties of the 34930 CANDELS H-detected objects, plus an additional sample of 178 H-dropout sources, of which 173 are Ks-detected and 5 IRAC-detected. We keep the CANDELS photometry in 7 bands (CTIOU, Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 and ISAAC-K), and measure from scratch the fluxes in the other 36 (VIMOS, HST ACS, HAWK-I Ks, Spitzer IRAC, and 23 from Subaru SuprimeCAM and Magellan-Baade Fourstar) with state-of-the-art techniques of template-fitting. We then compute new photometric redshifts with three different software tools, and take the median value as best estimate. We finally evaluate new physical parameters from SED fitting, comparing them to previously published ones. Comparing to a sample of 3931 high quality spectroscopic redshifts, for the new photo-z's we obtain a normalized median absolute deviation (NMAD) of 0.015 with 3.01% of outliers (0.011, 0.22% on the bright end at I_814_<22.5), similarly to the best available published samples of photometric redshifts, such as the COSMOS UltraVISTA catalogue. The ASTRODEEP-GS43 results are in qualitative agreement with previously published catalogues of the GOODS-South field, improving on them particularly in terms of SED sampling and photometric redshift estimates. The catalogue is available for download from the Astrodeep website.

- We present the full results of our decade-long astrometric monitoring programs targeting 31 ultracool binaries with component spectral types M7-T5. Joint analysis of resolved imaging from Keck Observatory and Hubble Space Telescope and unresolved astrometry from CFHT/WIRCam yields parallactic distances for all systems, robust orbit determinations for 23 systems, and photocenter orbits for 19 systems. As a result, we measure 38 precise individual masses spanning 30-115M_Jup_. We determine a model-independent substellar boundary that is ~70M_Jup_ in mass (~L4 in spectral type), and we validate Baraffe et al. evolutionary model predictions for the lithium-depletion boundary (60M_Jup_ at field ages). Assuming each binary is coeval, we test models of the substellar mass-luminosity relation and find that in the L/T transition, only the Saumon & Marley (2008ApJ...689.1327S) "hybrid" models accounting for cloud clearing match our data. We derive a precise, mass-calibrated spectral type-effective temperature relation covering 1100-2800K. Our masses enable a novel direct determination of the age distribution of field brown dwarfs spanning L4-T5 and 30-70M_Jup_. We determine a median age of 1.3Gyr, and our population synthesis modeling indicates our sample is consistent with a constant star formation history modulated by dynamical heating in the Galactic disk. We discover two triple-brown-dwarf systems, the first with directly measured masses and eccentricities. We examine the eccentricity distribution, carefully considering biases and completeness, and find that low-eccentricity orbits are significantly more common among ultracool binaries than solar-type binaries, possibly indicating the early influence of long-lived dissipative gas disks. Overall, this work represents a major advance in the empirical view of very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs.
