- We have designed the Extremely Luminous Quasar Survey (ELQS) to provide a highly complete census of unobscured UV-bright quasars during the cosmic noon, z=2.8-5.0. Here we report the discovery of 70 new quasars in the ELQS South Galactic Cap (ELQS-S) quasar sample, doubling the number of known extremely luminous quasars in 4237.3deg^2^ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint. These observations conclude the ELQS and we present the properties of the full ELQS quasar catalog, containing 407 quasars over 11838.5deg^2^. Our novel ELQS quasar selection strategy resulted in unprecedented completeness at the bright end and allowed us to discover 109 new quasars in total. This marks an increase of ~36% (109/298) in the known population at these redshifts and magnitudes, while we further are able to retain a selection efficiency of ~80%. On the basis of 166 quasars from the full ELQS quasar catalog, which adhere to the uniform criteria of the Two Micron All Sky Survey point source catalog, we measure the bright-end quasar luminosity function (QLF) and extend it one magnitude brighter than previous studies. Assuming a single power law with exponential density evolution for the functional form of the QLF, we retrieve the best-fit parameters from a maximum likelihood analysis. We find a steep bright-end slope of {beta}~-4.1, and we can constrain the bright-end slope to {beta}<=-3.4 with 99% confidence. The density is well modeled by the exponential redshift evolution, resulting in a moderate decrease with redshift ({gamma}~-0.4).

- We present Spitzer, near-IR (NIR) and millimetre observations of the massive star-forming regions W5-east, S235, S252, S254-S258 and NGC 7538. Spitzer data is combined with NIR observations to identify and classify the young population while ^12^CO and ^13^CO observations are used to examine the parental molecular cloud. We detect in total 3021 young stellar objects (YSOs). Of those, 539 are classified as Class I, and 1186 as Class II sources. YSOs are distributed in groups surrounded by a more scattered population. Class I sources are more hierarchically organized than Class II and associated with the most dense molecular material. We identify in total 41 embedded clusters containing between 52 and 73 per cent of the YSOs. Clusters are in general non-virialized, turbulent and have star formation efficiencies between 5 and 50 per cent. We compare the physical properties of embedded clusters harbouring massive stars (MEC) and low-mass embedded clusters (LEC) and find that both groups follow similar correlations where the MEC are an extrapolation of the LEC. The mean separation between MEC members is smaller compared to the cluster Jeans length than for LEC members. These results are in agreement with a scenario where stars are formed in hierarchically distributed dusty filaments where fragmentation is mainly driven by turbulence for the more massive clusters. We find several young OB-type stars having IR-excess emission which may be due to the presence of an accretion disc.

- We present 737 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) near the W51 giant molecular cloud over an area of 1.25x1.00{deg} selected from Spitzer Space Telescope data. We use spectral energy distribution fits to identify YSOs and distinguish them from main-sequence (MS) or red giant stars, asymptotic giant branch stars, and background galaxies. Based on extinction of each YSO, we separate a total of 437 YSOs associated with the W51 region from the possible foreground sources. We identify 69 highly embedded Stage 0/I candidate YSOs in our field with masses >5M_{sun}_ (corresponding to mid- to early-B MS spectral types), 46 of which are located in the central active star-forming regions of W51A and W51B. From the YSOs associated with W51, we find evidence for mass segregation showing that the most massive YSOs are concentrated on the W51 HII region complex.

- The Carina Nebula represents one of the largest and most active star forming regions known in our Galaxy. It contains numerous very massive (M>~40M_{sun}) stars that strongly act the surrounding clouds by their ionizing radiation and stellar winds. Our recently obtained Herschel PACS & SPIRE far-infrared maps cover the full area (~~8.7{deg}^2^) of the Carina Nebula complex and reveal the population of deeply embedded young stellar objects, most of which are not yet visible in the mid- or near-infrared. We study the properties of the 642 objects that are independently detected as point-like sources in at least two of the five Herschel bands. For those objects that can be identified with apparently single Spitzer counterparts, we use radiative transfer models to derive information about the basic stellar and circumstellar parameters.

- EIC (Equatorial Infrared Catalog) lists positions and other information for 7,220 infrared stars. Each star is described by a 175-byte print record. The fields within each star record are defined here. The catalog was prepared as a result of additional processing of USAF satellite data at 2.7 micrometers for sources within 10 degrees of the celestial equator. Every source has been observed on two or more days or on the same day at times 20 minutes apart. The catalog includes right ascension and declination (equinox B1950.0), flux densities and their standard deviations, galactic coordinates, spectral types, and cross identifications to the numbering systems of EIC-1, the SAO and AFGL catalogs, and the Durchmusterung catalogs.

- The detailed abundances of 23 chemical elements in nine bright red giant branch stars in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy are presented based on high-resolution spectra gathered at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and Magellan telescopes. A spherical model atmospheres analysis is applied using standard methods (local thermodynamic equilibrium and plane-parallel radiative transfer) to spectra ranging from 380 to 680nm. Stellar parameters are found to be consistent between photometric and spectroscopic analyses, both at moderate and high resolution. The stars in this analysis range in metallicity from -2.9<[Fe/H]<-1.3, and adopting the ages determined by Lemasle et al. (Cat. J/A+A/538/A100), we are able to examine the chemical evolution of Carina's old and intermediate-aged populations.

- The EROS-2 survey has produced a database of millions of time series from stars monitored for more than six years, allowing us to classify some of their sources into different variable star types. Among the so-called, long period variables (LPVs), which are known to follow particular sequences in the period-luminosity diagram, we find long secondary period variables whose variability origin remains a matter of debate. We analyze data for the 856864 variable stars that have been discovered in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) that are present in the EROS-2 database, to detect, classify, and characterize LPVs.

- This paper describes the methodology currently being implemented in the EIS pipeline for analysing optical/infrared multi-colour data. The aim is to identify different classes of objects as well as possible undesirable features associated with the construction of colour catalogues. The tools developed are used for a preliminary analysis of the multi-colour point source catalogue constructed from the optical/infrared imaging data obtained for the Chandra Deep Field South (CDF-S). These data are publicly available, representing the first installment of the ongoing EIS Deep Public Survey.

- This paper presents preliminary lists of potentially interesting point-like sources extracted from multicolour data obtained for a 1.7 square degree region near the South Galactic Pole. The region has been covered by the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) in B, V and I and offers a unique combination of area and depth. These lists, containing a total of 330 objects nearly all brighter than I~21.5, over 1. 27 square degrees (after removing some bad regions), are by-products of the process of verification and quality control of the object catalogs being produced. Among the colour selected targets are candidate very low mass stars/brown dwarfs (54), white-dwarfs (32), and quasars (244). In addition, a probable fast moving asteroid was identified. The objects presented here are natural candidates for follow-up spectroscopic observations and illustrate the usefulness of the EIS data for a broad range of science and for providing possible samples for the first year of the VLT.

- We explore the properties of early-type galaxies (ETGs), including ellipticals (E) and lenticulars (S0), in rich environments, such as clusters of galaxies (Virgo and Coma). The L_24_/L_K_ distribution of ETGs in both Virgo and Coma clusters shows that some S0s have a much larger L_24_/L_K_ ratio (0.5 to ~2 dex) than the bulk of the ETG population. This could be interpreted as an enhanced star formation rate in these lenticulars. We compare the optical colors of galaxies in these two clusters and investigate the nature of these sources with a large L_24_/L_K_ ratio by looking at their spatial distribution within the cluster, analyzing their optical spectra, and looking at their optical colors compared to late-types. We obtain 10 Coma and 3 Virgo early-type sources with larger L_24_/L_K_ ratios than the bulk of their population. We call these sources mid-infrared enhanced galaxies (MIEGs). In Coma, they are mostly located in the southwest part of the cluster where a substructure is falling onto the main cluster. MIEGs present a lower g-r color than the rest of the ETG sample because of a blue continuum. We interpret the excess L_24_/L_K_ ratio as evidence for enhanced star formation induced as a consequence of their infall into the main cluster.
