- We report on the first phase of a study of the stellar population comprising the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Approximately 50% of the ~3500 stars identified to date within ~2.5pc of the namesake Trapezium stars are optically visible, and in this paper we focus on that sample with I<2.5mag. The large number and number density of stars (n_peak_>10^4^pc^-3^), the wide range in the stellar mass (~0.1-50M_{sun}_), and the extreme youth (<1-2Myr) of the stellar population, make the ONC the best site for investigating: (1) the detailed shape of a truly "initial" mass spectrum; (2) the apparent age spread in a region thought to have undergone triggered star formation; (3) the time sequence of star formation as a function of stellar mass; and (4) trends of all of the above with cluster radius.

- The Phoenix Deep Survey is a multiwavelength galaxy survey based on deep 1.4GHz radio imaging. The primary goal of this survey is to investigate the properties of star formation in galaxies and to trace the evolution in those properties to a redshift z=1, covering a significant fraction of the age of the universe. By compiling a sample of star-forming galaxies based on selection at radio wavelengths we eliminate possible biases due to dust obscuration, a significant issue when selecting objects at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. In this paper, we present the catalogs and results of deep optical (UBVRI) and near-infrared (Ks) imaging of the deepest region of the existing decimetric radio imaging. The observations and data processing are summarized and the construction of the optical source catalogs described, together with the details of the identification of candidate optical counterparts to the radio catalogs. Based on our UBVRIKs imaging, photometric redshift estimates for the optical counterparts to the radio detections are explored.

- We have examined central stars of planetary nebulae and symbiotic stars found in the MACHO Galactic bulge database to look for variability. We found four central stars of planetary nebulae and eight symbiotic stars that show variability. We examine the variability and the nature of these objects in detail, as well as reporting on the objects that we did not find to be variable.

The survey is substantially complete to limits of Rc=21.5, Ic=19.5, Z=19.5. We use the catalogue to define a sample of NGC 2547 candidates with model-dependent masses of about 0.05-1.0M_{sun}_.

- A CCD photometric study of the dense galactic open cluster M 37 is discussed. The majority of the analysed data have been obtained through an R_C_ filter in order to collect time-series measurements. The observations were carried out on seven nights between December 1999 and February 2000, and have led to the discovery of 7 new variable stars in the field. Three of them have been unambiguously identified as W UMa-type eclipsing binaries, while two more are monoperiodic pulsating stars, most probably high-amplitude {delta} Scuti-type variables. Two stars seem to be long-period eclipsing binaries without firm period determination. The individual light curve data are presented here.

- We present Cousins R and I band photometry of variable stars in a ~13'x13' region in the disk of M31 galaxy, obtained during 141 nights. Of the 26 Cepheid variables present in the region, two are newly discovered, 11 are classified as Cepheids for the first time and 13 are confirmed as Cepheids. The extensive photometry of these Cepheids enabled us to determine precise phase and amplitude of pulsation which ranges from 0.11 to 0.48mag in R band. The period of variability ranges from ~7.5 to 56 days. The period-luminosity diagram is used to derive a distance modulus of 24.49+/-0.11mag for M31 galaxy. We also report variability in 333 other stars, of them, 115 stars appear to be long period variables, 2 suspected eclipsing binaries and remaining 216 are irregular variables.

- We have analyzed CCD images of 14 Abell clusters in the R filter of the Southern Abell Clusters Redshifts Survey (SARS) with cz<40,000km/s. We have obtained the luminosity profiles for 507 galaxies, of which 232 (46%) have known redshifts. In order to fit the luminosity profiles, we used the de Vaucouleurs law for bulge systems and an exponential profile for disk systems, and we also fitted the Sersic's law (r^n^) to all galaxy profiles.

- This paper presents a catalogue of previously unpublished optical and infrared photometry for a sample of 162 emission-line objects and shell stars visible from the southern hemisphere. The data were obtained between 1978 and 1997 in the Walraven (WULBV), Johnson/Cousins UBV(RI)_c_ and ESO and SAAO near-infrared (JHKLM) photometric systems. Most of the observed objects are Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars or HAeBe candidates appearing in the list of HAeBe candidates of The et al. (1994, Cat. <J/A+AS/104/315>), although several B[e] stars, LBVs and T Tauri are also included in the sample. For many of the stars the data presented here are the first photo-electric measurements in the literature. The resulting catalogue consists of 1809 photometric measurements. Optical variability was detected in 66 out of the 116 sources that were observed more than once. 15 out of the 50 stars observed multiple times in the infrared showed variability at 2.2 microns (K band). Table 1 contains the stars identifiers, positions, types and a summary of the observational data on each star. Tables 2, 3 and 4 contain all obtained photometry in the Walraven WULBV, Johnson/Cousins UBV(RI)_c and ESO and SAAO near-infrared (JHKLM) photometric systems.

- By collecting optical and infrared photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy, we have identified a large number of low-mass stars and brown dwarf candidates belonging to the young cluster (~5Myr) associated with the binary star {lambda} Orionis. The lowest mass object found is an M8.5 with an estimated mass of 0.02M_{Sun}_ (~0.01M_{Sun}_ for objects without spectroscopic confirmation). For those objects with spectroscopy, the measured strength of the H{alpha} emission line follows a distribution similar to other clusters with the same age range, with larger equivalent widths for cooler spectral types.
