- Using the quasars with z_em_<0.9 from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, we measure the spectral characteristics, including continuum and emission lines, around the H{beta} and H{alpha} spectral regions, which are lacking in Quasar Data Release 12 (DR12Q). We estimate the virial black hole mass from broad H{alpha} and/or H{beta}, and infer quasar redshifts from [OIII]{lambda}5007 emission lines. All the measurements and derived quantities are publicly available. A comparison between [OIII]{lambda}5007 redshifts and the visual inspection redshifts included in DR12Q indicates that the visual inspection redshifts are robust. We find that the full widths at half maximum of the broad H{alpha} are consistent with those of the broad H{beta}, while both the equivalent widths and line luminosities of the broad H{alpha} are obviously larger than the corresponding quantities of the broad H{beta}. We also find that there is an obviously systematic offset between the H{beta} and H{alpha} based mass if they are inferred from the empirical relationships in the literature. Using our large quasar sample, we have improved the H{beta} and H{alpha} based mass estimators by minimizing the difference between the H{beta}- and H{alpha}-based masses. For the black hole mass estimator (Equation (1)), we find that the coefficients (a,b)=(7.00,0.50) for H{alpha} and (a,b)=(6.96,0.50) for H{beta} are the best choices.

- We present new H{alpha}+[NII] imaging data of late-type galaxies in the Herschel Reference Sample aimed at studying the star formation properties of a K-band-selected, volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies. The H{alpha}+[NII] data are corrected for [NII] contamination and dust attenuation using different recipes based on the Balmer decrement and the 24um luminosities. We show that the H{alpha} luminosities derived with different corrections give consistent results only whenever the the uncertainty on the estimate of the Balmer decrement is [C(H{beta})]<=0.1. We use these data to derive the star formation rate of the late-type galaxies of the sample, and compare these estimates to those determined using independent monochromatic tracers (FUV, radio continuum) or the output of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting codes. This comparison suggests that the 24um based dust extinction correction for the H{alpha} data might be non universal, and that it should be used with caution in all objects with a low star formation activity, where dust heating can be dominated by the old stellar population. Furthermore, because of the sudden truncation of the star formation activity of cluster galaxies occurring after their interaction with the surrounding environment, the stationarity conditions required to transform monochromatic fluxes into star formation rates might not always be satisfied in tracers other than the H{alpha} luminosity. In a similar way, the parametrisation of the star formation history generally used in SED fitting codes might not be adequate for these recently interacting systems. We then use the derived star formation rates to study the SFR luminosity distribution and the typical scaling relations of the late-type galaxies of the HRS. We observe a systematic decrease of the specific star formation rate with increasing stellar mass, stellar mass surface density, and metallicity. We also observe an increase of the asymmetry and smoothness parameters measured in the H{alpha}-band with increasing SSFR, probably induced by an increase of the contribution of giant HII regions to the H{alpha} luminosity function in star-forming low-luminosity galaxies.

- In this paper we study long slit spectra in the region of H{alpha} emission line of a sample of 111 spiral galaxies with recognizable and well defined spiral morphology and with a well determined environmental status, ranging from isolation to non-disruptive interaction with satellites or companions. The form and properties of the rotation curves are considered as a function of the isolation degree, morphological type and luminosity. The line ratios are used to estimate the metallicity of all the detected H II regions, thus producing a composite metallicity profile for different types of spirals. We have found that isolated galaxies tend to be of later types and lower luminosity than the interacting galaxies. The outer parts of the rotation curves of isolated galaxies tend to be flatter than in interacting galaxies, but they show similar relations between global parameters. The scatter of the Tully-Fisher relation defined by isolated galaxies is significantly lower than that of interacting galaxies. The [NII]/H{alpha} ratios, used as a metallicity indicator, show a clear trend between Z and morphological type, t, with earlier spirals showing higher ratios; this trend is tighter when instead of t the gradient of the inner rotation curve, G, is used; no trend is found with the change in interaction status. The Z-gradient of the disks depends on the type, being almost flat for early spirals, and increasing for later types. The [NII]/H{alpha} ratios measured for disk H II regions of interacting galaxies are higher than for normal/isolated objects, even if all the galaxy families present similar distributions of H{alpha} equivalent width.

- We present the H{alpha} imaging observations of 273 late-type galaxies in the nearby rich galaxy clusters Virgo, A 1367, Coma, Cancer, Hercules and in the Great Wall, carried out primarily with the 2.1m telescope of the San Pedro Martir Observatory (SPM) and with the ESO/3.6m telescope. We derived the H{alpha}+[NII] fluxes and equivalent widths. The H{alpha} survey reached completion for an optically selected sample of nearby galaxies in and outside rich clusters. Taking advantage of the completeness of the data set, the dependence of H{alpha} properties on the Hubble type was determined for late-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Differences in the gaseous content partly account for the large scatter of the H{alpha} EW within each Hubble-type class. We studied the radial distributions of the H{alpha} EW around Coma+A 1367 and the Virgo clusters in two luminosity bins. Luminous galaxies show a decrease in their average H{alpha} EW in the inner ~1 virial radius, while low-luminosity galaxies do not show this trend. Description:

- We present results from an H{alpha} emission line survey in a 1 deg^2^ area centered on the Orion Nebula Cluster, obtained with the Wide Field Grism Spectrograph 2 on the 2.2 m telescope of the University of Hawaii. We identified 587 stars with H{alpha} emission, 99 of which, located mainly in the outer regions of the observed area, have not appeared in previous H{alpha} surveys. We determined the equivalent width (EW) of the line and, based on this, classified 372 stars as classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) and 187 as weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTSs). Simultaneous r', i' photometry indicates a limiting magnitude of r' ~ 20 mag, but the sample is incomplete at r' > 17 mag. The surface distribution of the H{alpha} emission stars reveals a clustered population and a dispersed population, the former consisting of younger and more massive young stars than the latter. Comparison of the derived EWs with those found in the literature indicates variability of the H{alpha} line. We found that the typical amplitudes of the variability are not greater than a factor of two to three in most cases. We identified a subgroup of low-EW stars with infrared signatures indicative of optically thick accretion disks. We studied the correlations between the EW and other properties of the stars. Based on literature data, we examined several properties of our CTTS and WTTS subsamples and found significant differences in mid-infrared color indices, average rotational periods, and spectral energy distribution characteristics of the subsamples.

- We present the results of a wide-field H{alpha} imaging survey of eight nearby (z=0.02-0.03) Abell clusters. We have measured H{alpha} fluxes and equivalent widths for 465 galaxies, of which 360 are new detections. The survey was designed to obtain complete emission-line-selected inventories of star-forming galaxies in the inner regions of these clusters, extending to star formation rates below 0.1M_{sun}_/yr. This paper describes the observations, data processing, and source identification procedures, and presents an H{alpha} and R-band catalog of detected cluster members and other candidates. Future papers in the series will use these data to study the completeness of spectroscopically based star formation surveys, and to quantify the effects of cluster environment on the present-day populations of star-forming galaxies. The data will also provide a valuable foundation for imaging surveys of redshifted H{alpha} emission in more distant clusters.

- From detailed abundance analysis of >100 Hamburg/ESO candidate extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars we find 45 with [Fe/H]<-3.0dex. We identify a heretofore unidentified group: Ca-deficient stars with sub-solar [Ca/Fe] ratios and the lowest neutron-capture abundances; the Ca-deficient group comprises ~10% of the sample, excluding Carbon stars. Our radial velocity distribution shows that the carbon-enhanced stars with no s-process enhancements, CEMP-no, and which do not show C_2_ bands are not preferentially binary systems. Ignoring Carbon stars, approximately 15% of our sample are strong (>=5{sigma}) outliers in one or more elements between Mg and Ni; this rises to ~19% if very strong (>=10{sigma}) outliers for Sr and Ba are included. Examples include: HE0305-0554 with the lowest [Ba/H] known; HE1012-1540 and HE2323-0256, two (non-velocity variable) C-rich stars with very strong [Mg,Al/Fe] enhancements; and HE1226-1149, an extremely r-process rich star.

- We report the discovery by the HATNet survey of HAT-TR-318-007, a P=3.34395390+/-0.00000020 day period detached double-lined M dwarf binary with total secondary eclipses. We combine radial velocity (RV) measurements from TRES/FLWO 1.5 m and time-series photometry from HATNet, FLWO 1.2 m, BOS 0.8 m, and NASA K2 Campaign 5, to determine the masses and radii of the component stars: M_A_=0.448+/-0.011 M_{sun}_^N^, M_B_=0.2721_-0.0042_^+0.0041^ M_{sun}_^N^, R_A_=0.4548_-0.0036_^+0.0035^ R_{sun}_^N^, and R_B_=0.2913_-0.0024_^+0.0023^ R_{sun}_^N^. We obtained a FIRE/Magellan near-infrared spectrum of the primary star during a total secondary eclipse, and we use this to obtain disentangled spectra of both components. We determine spectral types of ST_A_=M3.71+/-0.69 and ST_B_=M5.01+/-0.73 and effective temperatures of T_eff,A_=3190+/-110 K and T_eff,B_=3100+/-110 K for the primary and secondary star, respectively. We also measure a metallicity of [Fe/H]=+0.298+/-0.080 for the system. We find that the system has a small, but significant, nonzero eccentricity of 0.0136+/-0.0026. The K2 light curve shows a coherent variation at a period of 3.41315_-0.00032_^+0.00030^ days, which is slightly longer than the orbital period, and which we demonstrate comes from the primary star. We interpret this as the rotation period of the primary. We perform a quantitative comparison between the Dartmouth stellar evolution models and the seven systems, including HAT-TR-318-007, that contain M dwarfs with 0.2 M_{sun}_^N^<M<0.5 M_{sun}_^N^, have metallicity measurements, and have masses and radii determined to better than 5% precision. Discrepancies between the predicted and observed masses and radii are found for three of the systems.

- We report the discovery of a lithium-rich giant, HD 150382, a post-red-giant-branch clump star. The atmospheric parameters, the chemical abundances for 17 elements, and the isotopic ratio ^12^C/^13^C were determined using the equivalent width and the spectral synthesis methods. The lithium abundance was determined via spectral synthesis of the Li I resonance doublet at {lambda} 6708 yielding log{epsilon}(Li)_NLTE_=2.55. The excited-state line at {lambda} 6104 also was analyzed. In addition, we have used theoretical evolutionary tracks to determine the mass and luminosity of HD 150382 and compare it with other well-known lithium-rich giants in the literature. Our results show that HD 150382 is a slowly rotating K-giant star having near-solar metallicity. We also show that HD 150382 is not s-process enriched, which is in agreement with its evolutionary status. Finally, based on the abundance results, we study the possible scenarios of the lithium enrichment.

- We present a comprehensive abundance analysis of 27 heavy elements in bright giant stars of the globular clusters M4 and M5 based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra obtained with the Magellan Clay Telescope. We confirm and expand on previous results for these clusters by showing that (1) all elements heavier than, and including, Si have constant abundances within each cluster, (2) the elements from Ca to Ni have indistinguishable compositions in M4 and M5, (3) Si, Cu, Zn, and all s-process elements are approximately 0.3dex overabundant in M4 relative to M5, and (4) the r-process elements Sm, Eu, Gd, and Th are slightly overabundant in M5 relative to M4. The cluster-to-cluster abundance differences for Cu and Zn are intriguing, especially in light of their uncertain nucleosynthetic origins. We confirm that stars other than Type Ia supernovae must produce significant amounts of Cu and Zn at or below the clusters' metallicities. If intermediate-mass AGB stars or massive stars are responsible for the Cu and Zn enhancements in M4, the similar [Rb/Zr] ratios and (preliminary) Mg isotope ratios in both clusters may be problematic for either scenario. For the elements from Ba to Hf, we assume that the s- and r-process contributions are scaled versions of the solar s- and r-process abundances. We quantify the relative fractions of s- and r-process material for each cluster and show that they provide an excellent fit to the observed abundances.
