- Description:
- Data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) interferometers, covering 22 months of guide-star acquisition operations, have been analyzed for evidence of stellar duplicity. The data comprise a survey of observed guide stars, all of which are taken from the HST Guide Star Catalog, ranging in magnitude from 9 to 14. The survey results cover a parameter space for the newly found doubles, for the fainter stars, which are of smaller limiting angular separations than in any previous surveys. The normal HST engineering telemetry data from 13,979 acquisitions on 4882 stars have been processed. The FGS guidance data can reveal duplicity with separations ranging from approximately 30mas, for the brighter stars, with small magnitude differences, up to the neighborhood of 500mas, and in some cases to 1000mas. The fraction of guide stars indicating duplicity is a function of the statistical criteria used but is over 5% at a very high level of confidence. It is possible that if some of the brighter and closer pairs could be identified as nearby, then their orbital motions would be rapid enough to allow a mass and distance determination on a timescale of a decade if followed with ground-based interferometric and spectroscopic instruments. A brief catalog of doubles is given, nearly all of which are of certain duplicity. Information for accessing on-line catalogs of large numbers of stars with lesser, but nevertheless strong, probabilities of duplicity and also for the solutions for duplicity from all acquisitions is provided.

- Description:
- We present first results of our efforts to re-analyze the Kepler photometric dataset, searching for planetary transits using an alternative processing pipeline to the one used by the Kepler mission The SARS pipeline was tried and tested extensively by processing all available CoRoT mission data. For this first paper of the series we used this pipeline to search for (additional) planetary transits only in a small subset of stars - the Kepler objects of interest (KOIs), which are already known to include at least one promising planet candidate.

- New orbits for 18 binaries
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/154/273
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Orbital elements of 18 visual binaries are computed using the measurements collected in the Fourth Catalog of Interferometric Measurements of Binary Stars; 15 orbits are determined for the first time and three orbits are revised. Eleven of the binaries, denoted as HDS, were discovered during the Hipparcos mission. The remaining binaries were discovered a few years earlier or later than 1991. All studied pairs are close, and all measured separations are less than 0.46". The shortest orbital period is 10 years and the longest orbital period is 127 years. Dynamical parallaxes and total masses of systems are derived from the orbital elements. We also give absolute magnitudes, spectral types, and (O-C) residuals in {theta} and {rho}.

- New SpeX Observations of M7-L6 Dwarfs
- Short Name:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Multiplicity is a key statistic for understanding the formation of very low mass (VLM) stars and brown dwarfs. Currently, the separation distribution of VLM binaries remains poorly constrained at small separations (<=1 AU), leading to uncertainty in the overall binary fraction. We approach this problem by searching for late-M/early-L plus T dwarf spectral binaries whose combined light spectra exhibit distinct peculiarities, allowing for separation-independent identification. We define a set of spectral indices designed to identify these systems, and we use a spectral template fitting method to confirm and characterize spectral binary candidates from a library of 815 spectra from the SpeX Prism Spectral Libraries. We present 11 new binary candidates, confirm 3 previously reported candidates, and rule out 2 previously identified candidates, all with primary and secondary spectral types in the range M7-L7 and T1-T8, respectively. We find that subdwarfs and blue L dwarfs are the primary contaminants in our sample and propose a method for segregating these sources. If confirmed by follow-up observations, these systems may add to the growing list of tight separation binaries, whose orbital properties may yield further insight into brown dwarf formation scenarios.

- New transiting planet candidates from Kepler
- Short Name:
- J/MNRAS/429/2001
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We have performed an extensive search for planet candidates in the publicly available Kepler long cadence data from quarters Q1 through Q6. The search method consists of initial de-trending of the data, applying the trend filtering algorithm, searching for transit signals with the Box Least Squares fitting method in three frequency domains, visual inspection of the potential transit candidates and an in-depth analysis of the shortlisted candidates. In this paper we present 150 new periodic planet candidates and seven single transit events, 72 of which are in multiple systems. The periods of these planet candidates vary from ~0.17 to ~440d. 124 of the planet candidates have radii smaller than 3R_{earth}_. We recover 82.5 per cent of the Batalha et al. (2012, Cat. J/ApJS/204/24). Kepler Objects of Interest (KOI) catalogue. We also report 40 newly identified false positives - systems that look like transiting planets, but are probably due to blended eclipsing binaries. Our search improves the statistics in the short-period and small-planet radii parameter ranges.

- New Wide Common Proper Motion Binaries
- Short Name:
- J/other/JDSO/6.3
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- In this work we report the discovery of 150 new double stars of which 142 are wide common proper motion stellar systems. In addition to this, we report the study of 23 recently catalogued wide common proper motion binaries discovered by other observers. Spectral types, photometric distances, kinematics and ages were determined from data obtained consulting the literature. Several criteria were used to determine the nature of each double star. Orbital periods and the semimajor axes were calculated.

- NGC 330 Be stars and binaries
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/472/577
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- Observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster SMC-NGC 330 and its surrounding region were obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We investigated the B and Be star properties and proportions in this environment of low metallicity. We also searched for rapid variability in Be stars using photometric databases. Using spectroscopic measurements, we characterized the emission and properties of Be stars. By cross-correlation with photometric databases such as MACHO and OGLE, we searched for binaries in our sample of hot stars, as well as for short-term variability in Be stars. We report on the global characteristics of the Be star sample.

- NICMOS observations of NGC 2024
- Short Name:
- J/AJ/126/1665
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We present an analysis of NICMOS observations of the embedded cluster associated with NGC 2024. An analysis of the cluster color-magnitude diagram (CMD) using the models of D'Antona & Mazzitelli and Baraffe et al. (published in 1997MmSAI..68..807D and 1998, Cat. <J/A+A/337/403>, respectively) indicates that the ratio of intermediate-mass (1.0-10.0M_{sun}_) to low-mass (0.1-1.0M_{sun}_) stars is consistent with the stellar initial mass function (IMF) for the field. In addition to the CMD analysis, we present results on the multiplicity of stars in the region. Three companions (in a sample of 95 potential primaries) were found, with angular separations between 0.4" and 1.0", translating to a projected linear separation of 184-460AU for an estimated distance of 460pc. The completeness of binary detections is assessed using recovery fractions calculated by a series of tests using artificially generated companions to potential primaries in the data frames. We find that the binary fraction in NGC 2024 is consistent with that of Duquennoy & Mayor (published in 1991A&A...248..485D) for solar neighborhood stars over the range of separations and companion masses appropriate for our survey.

- NIR imaging survey for planets around MG stars
- Short Name:
- J/ApJ/777/160
- Date:
- 21 Oct 2021
- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- We report results of a direct imaging survey for giant planets around 80 members of the {beta} Pic, TW Hya, Tucana-Horologium, AB Dor, and Hercules-Lyra moving groups, observed as part of the Gemini/NICI Planet-Finding Campaign. For this sample, we obtained median contrasts of {Delta}H=13.9mag at 1" in combined CH_4_ narrowband ADI+SDI mode and median contrasts of {Delta}H=15.1mag at 2" in H-band ADI mode. We found numerous (>70) candidate companions in our survey images. Some of these candidates were rejected as common-proper motion companions using archival data; we reobserved with Near-Infrared Coronagraphic Imager (NICI) all other candidates that lay within 400AU of the star and were not in dense stellar fields. The vast majority of candidate companions were confirmed as background objects from archival observations and/or dedicated NICI Campaign followup. Four co-moving companions of brown dwarf or stellar mass were discovered in this moving group sample: PZ Tel B (36+/-6M_Jup_, 16.4+/-1.0AU), CD-35 2722B (31+/-8M_Jup_, 67+/-4AU), HD 12894B (0.46+/-0.08M_{sun}_, 15.7+/-1.0AU), and BD+07 1919C (0.20+/-0.03M_{sun}_, 12.5+/-1.4AU). From a Bayesian analysis of the achieved H band ADI and ASDI contrasts, using power-law models of planet distributions and hot-start evolutionary models, we restrict the frequency of 1-20M_Jup_ companions at semi-major axes from 10-150AU to <18% at a 95.4% confidence level using DUSTY models and to <6% at a 95.4% using COND models. Our results strongly constrain the frequency of planets within semi-major axes of 50 AU as well. We restrict the frequency of 1-20M_Jup_ companions at semi-major axes from 10-50AU to <21% at a 95.4% confidence level using DUSTY models and to <7% at a 95.4% using COND models. This survey is the deepest search to date for giant planets around young moving group stars.
