- C and O abundances in 55 Cnc

- Description:
- The super-Earth exoplanet 55 Cnc e, the smallest member of a five-planet system, has recently been observed to transit its host star. The radius estimates from transit observations, coupled with spectroscopic determinations of mass, provide constraints on its interior composition. The composition of exoplanetary interiors and atmospheres are particularly sensitive to elemental C/O ratio, which to first order can be estimated from the host stars. Results from a recent spectroscopic study analyzing the 6300{AA}[OI] line and two CI lines suggest that 55 Cnc has a carbon-rich composition (C/O=1.12+/-0.09). However, oxygen abundances derived using the 6300{AA}[OI] line are highly sensitive to a Ni I blend, particularly in metal-rich stars such as 55 Cnc ([Fe/H]=0.34+/-0.18). Here, we further investigate 55 Cnc's composition by deriving the carbon and oxygen abundances from these and additional C and O absorption features. We find that the measured C/O ratio depends on the oxygen lines used. The C/O ratio that we derive based on the 6300{AA}[OI] line alone is consistent with the previous value. Yet, our investigation of additional abundance indicators results in a mean C/O ratio of 0.78+/-0.08. The lower C/O ratio of 55 Cnc determined here may place this system at the sensitive boundary between protoplanetary disk compositions giving rise to planets with high (>0.8) versus low (<0.8) C/O ratios. This study illustrates the caution that must applied when determining planet host star C/O ratios, particularly in cool, metal-rich stars.

- Description:
- We search for low-mass companions of M dwarfs and characterize their multiplicity fraction with the purpose of helping in the selection of the most appropriate targets for the CARMENES exoplanet survey. We obtained high-resolution images in the I band with the lucky imaging instrument FastCam at the 1.5m Telescopio Carlos Sanchez for 490 mid- to late-M dwarfs. For all the detected binaries, we measured angular separations, position angles, and magnitude differences in the I band. We also calculated the masses of each individual component and estimated orbital periods, using the available magnitude and colour relations for M dwarfs and our own M_J_-spectral type and mass-M_I_ relations. To avoid biases in our sample selection, we built a volume-limited sample of M0.0-M5.0 dwarfs that is complete up to 86% within 14pc.

- Description:
- CARMENES is a spectrograph for radial velocity surveys of M dwarfs with the aim of detecting Earth-mass planets orbiting in the habitable zones of their host stars. To ensure an optimal use of the CARMENES guaranteed time observations, in this paper we investigate the correlation of activity and rotation for approximately 2200 M dwarfs, ranging in spectral type from M0.0 V to M9.0 V. We present new high-resolution spectroscopic observations with FEROS, CAFE, and HRS of approximately 500 M dwarfs. For each new observation, we determined its radial velocity and measured its H{alpha} activity index and its rotation velocity. Additionally, we have multiple observations of many stars to investigate if there are any radial velocity variations due to multiplicity. The results of our survey confirm that early-M dwarfs are H{alpha} inactive with low rotational velocities and that late-M dwarfs are H{alpha} active with very high rotational velocities. The results of this high-resolution analysis comprise the most extensive catalogue of rotation and activity in M dwarfs currently available.

- Description:
- The main goal of this work is to measure rotation periods of the M-type dwarf stars being observed by the CARMENES exoplanet survey to help distinguish radial-velocity signals produced by magnetic activity from those produced by exoplanets. Rotation periods are also fundamental for a detailed study of the relation between activity and rotation in late-type stars. We look for significant periodic signals in 622 photometric time series of 337 bright, nearby M dwarfs obtained by long-time baseline, automated surveys (MEarth, ASAS, SuperWASP, NSVS, Catalina, ASAS-SN, K2, and HATNet) and, for 20 stars, obtained by us with four 0.2-0.8m telescopes at high geographical latitudes. We present 142 rotation periods (73 new) from 0.12d to 133d and ten long-term activity cycles (six new) from 3.0a to 11.5a. We compare our determinations with those in the existing literature, investigate the distribution of Prot in the CARMENES input catalogue, the amplitude of photometric variability, and their relation to vsini and pEW(H{alpha}), and identify three very active stars with new rotation periods between 0.34d and 23.6d.

- Description:
- The main goal of the CARMENES survey is to find Earth-mass planets around nearby M-dwarf stars. Seven M-dwarfs included in the CARMENES sample had been observed before with HIRES and HARPS and either were reported to have one short period planetary companion (GJ 15 A, GJ 176, GJ 436, GJ 536 and GJ 1148) or are multiple planetary systems (GJ 581 and GJ 876). Aims. We aim to report new precise optical radial velocity measurements for these planet hosts and test the overall capabilities of CARMENES. We combined our CARMENES precise Doppler measurements with those available from HIRES and HARPS and derived new orbital parameters for the systems. Bona-fide single planet systems are fitted with a Keplerian model. The multiple planet systems were analyzed using a self-consistent dynamical model and their best fit orbits were tested for long-term stability. Results. We confirm or provide supportive arguments for planets around all the investigated stars except for GJ 15 A, for which we find that the post-discovery HIRES data and our CARMENES data do not show a signal at 11.4days. Although we cannot confirm the super-Earth planet GJ 15 Ab, we show evidence for a possible long-period (Pc=7025^+972^_-629_days) Saturn-mass (m_c_sini=51.8^+5.5^_-5.8_M_{Earth}_) planet around GJ 15 A. In addition, based on our CARMENES and HIRES data we discover a second planet around GJ 1148, for which we estimate a period Pc=532.6^+4.2^_-2.5_days, eccentricity e_c_=0.342^+0.050^_-0.062_ and minimum mass m_c_sini=68.1^+4.9^_-2.2_M_{Earth}_. The CARMENES optical radial velocities have similar precision and overall scatter when compared to the Doppler measurements conducted with HARPS and HIRES. We conclude that CARMENES is an instrument that is up to the challenge of discovering rocky planets around low-mass stars.

- CARMENES time-resolved CaII H&K catalog
- Short Name:

- Description:
- Radial-velocity (RV) jitter caused by stellar magnetic activity is an important factor in state-of-the-art exoplanet discovery surveys such as CARMENES. Stellar rotation, along with heterogeneities in the photosphere and chromosphere caused by activity, can result in false-positive planet detections. Hence, it is necessary to determine the stellar rotation period and compare it to any putative planetary RV signature. Long-term measurements of activity indicators such as the chromospheric emission in the CaII H&K lines enable the identification of magnetic activity cycles. In order to determine stellar rotation periods and study the long-term behavior of magnetic activity of the CARMENES guaranteed time observations (GTO) sample, it is advantageous to extract R'HK time series from archival data, since the CARMENES spectrograph does not cover the blue range of the stellar spectrum containing the Ca II H&K lines. We have assembled a catalog of 11634 archival spectra of 186 M dwarfs acquired by seven different instruments covering the CaII H&K regime: ESPADONS, FEROS, HARPS, HIRES, NARVAL, TIGRE, and UVES. The relative chromospheric flux in these lines, R'HK, was directly extracted from the spectra by rectification with PHOENIX synthetic spectra via narrow passbands around the Ca II H&K line cores. The combination of archival spectra from various instruments results in time series for 186 stars from the CARMENES GTO sample. As an example of the use of the catalog, we report the tentative discovery of three previously unknown activity cycles of M dwarfs. We conclude that the method of extracting R'HK with the use of model spectra yields consistent results for different instruments and that the compilation of this catalog will enable the analysis of long-term activity time series for a large number of M dwarfs.

- Description:
- Following the first discovery of a planet orbiting a giant star in 2002, we started the CORALIE radial-velocity search for companions around evolved stars (CASCADES). We present the observations of three stars conducted at the 1.2m Leonard Euler Swiss telescope at La Silla Observatory, Chile, using the CORALIE spectrograph. We aim to detect planetary companions to intermediate-mass G- and K- type evolved stars and perform a statistical analysis of this population. We searched for new planetary systems around the stars HD22532 (TIC200851704), HD64121 (TIC264770836), and HD69123 (TIC146264536). We have followed a volume-limited sample of 641 red giants since 2006 to obtain high-precision radial-velocity measurements. We used the Data & Analysis Center for Exoplanets (DACE) platform to perform a radial-velocity analysis to search for periodic signals in the line profile and activity indices, to distinguish between planetary-induced radial-velocity variations and stellar photospheric jitter, and to search for significant signals in the radial-velocity time series to fit a corresponding Keplerian model. In this paper, we present the survey in detail, and we report on the discovery of the first three planets of the sample around the giant stars HD22532, HD64121, and HD69123.

- Catalog of contact binary stars
- Short Name:
- J/A+A/426/1001
- Date:

- Publisher:
- CDS
- Description:
- A catalogue of light curve solutions of contact binary stars has been compiled. It contains the results of 159 light curve solutions. Properties of contact binary stars were studied by using the catalogue data. As it is well known since Lucy's (1968ApJ...151.1123L, 1968ApJ...153..877L) and Mochnacki's (1981ApJ...245..650M) works, primary components transfer their own energy to the secondary star via the common envelope around the two stars. This transfer was parameterized by a transfer parameter (ratio of the observed and intrinsic luminosities of the primary star). We proved that this transfer parameter is a simple function of the mass and luminosity ratio. This newly found relation is valid for all systems except H type systems which have a different relation. We introduced a new type of contact binary stars: H subtype systems which have a large mass ratio (q>0.72). These systems show highly different behaviour on the luminosity ratio - transfer parameter diagram from other systems and according to our results the energy transfer rate is less efficient in them than in other type of contact binary stars.

- Catalog of Earth-Like Exoplanet Survey Targets

- Description:
- Locating planets in circumstellar habitable zones (HZs) is a priority for many exoplanet surveys. Space-based and ground-based surveys alike require robust toolsets to aid in target selection and mission planning. We present the Catalog of Earth-Like Exoplanet Survey Targets (CELESTA), a database of HZs around 37000 nearby stars. We calculated stellar parameters, including effective temperatures, masses, and radii, and we quantified the orbital distances and periods corresponding to the circumstellar HZs. We gauged the accuracy of our predictions by contrasting CELESTA's computed parameters to observational data. We ascertain a potential return on investment by computing the number of HZs probed for a given survey duration. A versatile framework for extending the functionality of CELESTA into the future enables ongoing comparisons to new observations, and recalculations when updates to HZ models, stellar temperatures, or parallax data become available. We expect to upgrade and expand CELESTA using data from the Gaia mission as the data become available.

- Description:
- We present a catalog of nearby exoplanets. It contains the 172 known low-mass companions with orbits established through radial velocity and transit measurements around stars within 200pc. We include five previously unpublished exoplanets orbiting the stars HD 11964, HD 66428, HD 99109, HD 107148, and HD 164922. We update orbits for 83 additional exoplanets, including many whose orbits have not been revised since their announcement, and include radial velocity time series from the Lick, Keck, and Anglo-Australian Observatory planet searches. Both these new and previously published velocities are more precise here due to improvements in our data reduction pipeline, which we applied to archival spectra. We present a brief summary of the global properties of the known exoplanets, including their distributions of orbital semimajor axis, minimum mass, and orbital eccentricity.
