- We describe a technique to identify Be stars in open clusters using Stroemgren b, y, and narrowband H{alpha} photometry. We first identify the B-type stars of the cluster using a theoretical isochrone fit to the (b-y, y) color-magnitude diagram. The strongest Be stars are easily identified in a (b-y, y-H{alpha}) color-color diagram, but those with weaker H{alpha} emission (classified as possible Be star detections) may be confused with evolved or foreground stars. Here we present such photometry plus H{alpha} spectroscopy of members of the cluster NGC 3766 to demonstrate the accuracy of our technique.

- The large and small-scale (pc) structure of the Galactic interstellar medium can be investigated by utilising spectra of early- type stellar probes of known distances in the same region of the sky. This paper determines the variation in line strength of CaII at 3933.661{AA} as a function of probe separation for a large sample of stars, including a number of sightlines in the Magellanic Clouds. FLAMES-GIRAFFE data taken with the Very Large Telescope towards early-type stars in 3 Galactic and 4 Magellanic open clusters in CaII are used to obtain the velocity, equivalent width, column density, and line width of interstellar Galactic calcium for a total of 657 stars, of which 443 are Magellanic Cloud sightlines. In each cluster there are between 43 and 111 stars observed. Additionally, FEROS and UVES CaII K and NaI D spectra of 21 Galactic and 154 Magellanic early-type stars are presented and combined with data from the literature to study the calcium column density - parallax relationship.

- Using the FORS2 instrument on the Very Large Telescope, we have obtained near-infrared spectra for more than 200 stars in 28 populous LMC clusters. This cluster sample spans a large range of ages (~113Gyr) and metallicities (-0.3>~[Fe/H]>~-2.0) and has good areal coverage of the LMC disk. The strong absorption lines of the Ca II triplet are used to derive cluster radial velocities and abundances. We determine mean cluster velocities to typically 1.6km/s and mean metallicities to 0.04dex (random error). For eight of these clusters, we report the first spectroscopically determined metallicities based on individual cluster stars, and six of these eight have no published radial velocity measurements. Combining our data with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 photometry, we find that the newly measured cluster, NGC 1718, is one of the most metal-poor ([Fe/H]~-0.80) intermediate-age (~2Gyr) inner disk clusters in the LMC. Similar to what was found by previous authors, this cluster sample has radial velocities consistent with that of a single rotating disk system, with no indication that the newly reported clusters exhibit halo kinematics. In addition, our findings confirm previous results that show that the LMC lacks the metallicity gradient typically seen in non-barred spiral galaxies, suggesting that the bar is driving the mixing of stellar populations in the LMC.

- Massive O-type and early B-type (OB) stars in the nearby Galaxy remain incompletely cataloged due to high extinction, bright visible and infrared nebular emission in H II regions, and high field star contamination. These difficulties are alleviated by restricting the search to stars with X-ray emission. Using the X-ray point sources from the Massive Young Star-forming Complex Study in Infrared and X-Rays (MYStIX) survey of OB-dominated regions, we identify 98 MYStIX candidate OB (MOBc) stars by fitting their 1-8{mu}m spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with reddened stellar atmosphere models. We identify 27 additional MOBc stars based on JHK_S_ photometry of X-ray stars lacking SED fitting. These candidate OB stars indicate that the current census of stars earlier than B1, taken across the 18 MYStIX regions studied, is less than 50% complete. We also fit the SEDs of 239 previously published OB stars to measure interstellar extinction and bolometric luminosities, revealing six candidate massive binary systems and five candidate O-type (super)giants. As expected, candidate OB stars have systematically higher extinction than previously published OB stars. Notable results for individual regions include identification of the OB population of a recently discovered massive cluster in NGC 6357, an older OB association in the M17 complex, and new massive luminous O stars near the Trifid Nebula. In several relatively poorly studied regions (RCW 38, NGC 6334, NGC 6357, Trifid, and NGC 3576), the OB populations may increase by factors of 2.

- The Chandra Carina Complex contains 200 known O- and B-type stars. The Chandra survey detected 68 of the 70 O stars and 61 of 127 known B0-B3 stars. We have assembled a publicly available optical/X-ray database to identify OB stars that depart from the canonical L_X/L_bol relation or whose average X-ray temperatures exceed 1keV. Among the single O stars with high kT we identify two candidate magnetically confined wind shock sources: Tr16-22, O8.5 V, and LS 1865, O8.5 V((f)). The O4 III(fc) star HD 93250 exhibits strong, hard, variable X-rays, suggesting that it may be a massive binary with a period of >30d. The visual O2 If* binary HD 93129A shows soft 0.6keV and hard 1.9keV emission components, suggesting embedded wind shocks close to the O2 If* Aa primary and colliding wind shocks between Aa and Ab. Of the 11 known O-type spectroscopic binaries, the long orbital-period systems HD 93343, HD 93403, and QZ Car have higher shock temperatures than short-period systems such as HD 93205 and FO 15. Although the X-rays from most B stars may be produced in the coronae of unseen, low-mass pre-main-sequence companions, a dozen B stars with high L_X_ cannot be explained by a distribution of unseen companions. One of these, SS73 24 in the Treasure Chest cluster, is a new candidate Herbig Be star.

- The catalog is a compilation of the observed projected rotational velocities, V_rot_*sin(i), for 28179 stars from 166 open clusters, globular clusters and associations. The catalog.dat file contains 39351 individual V_rot_*sin(i) data, together with the error and the method of determination. Because of the possible confusion with the use of different names for stars belonging to clusters we have included alternative names using SIMBAD nomenclature. Rotational velocities from CDS catalogue III/226 (Glebocki+ 2000) are included. Information about the number of stars in each cluster as well as other cluster names can be found in the "clusters.dat" file. The bibliographical references are provided in the "refs.dat" file. The file "mean.dat" contains mean V*sin(i) values for each star. The individual v*sin(i) measurements were reduced to a uniform standard (to remove the systematic errors) and a weighted average of V*sin(i) was calculated. The V*sin(i) values used as standards are presented in the "standards.dat" file.

- Currently, the global characteristics and evolution of super star clusters (SSCs) are not well understood, due to the large distances to their host galaxies. We aim to study the population of SSCs in IRAS 17138-1017, a luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG), in terms of age, extinction, mass, and luminosity distribution. We analyzed imaging data in the near-infrared from the GeMS/GSAOI instrument on the Gemini telescope and generated simulations with the radiative transfer code MontAGN. The extraction of SSCs from the images and their photometry in J, H, and Ks allowed us to derive color-color and color-magnitude diagrams. Comparison with a theoretical stellar evolutionary track gives a first hint into the extinction towards each SSC, as well as their ages, despite some degeneracy between those two quantities. Spectra given by our radiative transfer code MontAGN, which includes dust emission, also provide insightful predictions and comparisons. We detect with a fair degree of confidence 54 SSCs of m_Ks between 16 mag and 21 mag with a median instrumental uncertainty of 0.05 mag. When plotted on a color-color diagram and a color-magnitude diagram, it appears that most of the sources are very much extinct with respect to an intrinsic theoretical evolutionary track. Once de-reddened, the colors point unambiguously to two distinct and very recent starburst episodes at 2.8 and 4.5Myr. While the SSCs in the 4.5Myr starburst are distributed along the spiral arms, the 2.8Myr SSCs are concentrated in the central region. The luminosity and mass functions present a classical power-law behavior, although with shallower slopes than generally observed in LIRGs. Comparison with radiative transfer simulations shows that, especially for the youngest SSCs, the thermal emission by dust is not negligible and could explain the few very red SSCs that could not be de-reddened safely. This effect could lead to a misevaluation of the age of the starburst by at most 1 or 2Myr.
