- We present UBVI photometry for 8530 stars in Baade's Window obtained during the OGLE-II microlensing survey. Among these are over one thousand red clump giants. 1391 of them have photometry with errors smaller than 0.04, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.20 mag in the I, V, B, and U-band, respectively. We constructed a map of interstellar reddening. The corrected colors of the red clump giants: (U-B)_0_, (B-V)_0_, and (V-I)_0_ are very well correlated, indicating that a single parameter determines the observed spread of their values, reaching almost 2mag in the (U-B)_0_. It seems most likely that heavy element content is the dominant parameter, but it is possible that another parameter: the age (or mass) of a star moves it along the same trajectory in the color-color diagram as the metallicity. The current ambiguity can be resolved with spectral analysis, and our catalog may be useful as a finding list of red clump giants. We point out that these K giants are more suitable for a fair determination of the distribution of metallicity than brighter M giants. We also present a compilation of UBVI data for 308 red clump giants near the Sun, for which Hipparcos parallaxes are more accurate than 10%. Spectral analysis of their metallicity may provide information about the local metallicity distribution as well as the extent to which mass (age) of these stars affects their colors.

- Elliptical galaxies and globular clusters (GCs) have traditionally been regarded as physically distinct entities due to their discontinuous distribution in key scaling diagrams involving size, luminosity and velocity dispersion. Recently this distinctness has been challenged by the discovery of stellar systems with mass intermediate between those of GCs and dwarf ellipticals (such as ultracompact dwarfs and dwarf galaxy transition objects). Here we examine the relationship between the virial and stellar mass for a range of old stellar systems, from GCs to giant ellipticals, and including such intermediate-mass objects (IMOs). Improvements on previous work in this area include the use of (i) near-infrared magnitudes from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), (ii) aperture corrections to velocity dispersions, (iii) homogeneous half-light radii and (iv) accounting for the effects of non-homology in galaxies.

- The WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS) is a wide-field and multiwavelength survey of 76 galaxy clusters in the local Universe. The sample consists of all clusters at 0.04<z<0.07 in both hemispheres at Galactic latitude |b|>20 selected from the ROSAT X-ray-Brightest Abell-type Cluster Sample, the Brightest Cluster Sample, and its extension. The original WINGS survey is based on B and V imaging for the 76 clusters over a 34 by 34 arcminute field of view taken with the Wide Field Cameras on the INT and the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescopes. With the aim to cover the virial region and extend out into the infall region, we have obtained GTO OmegaCAM imaging in the B, and V bands over 1 by 1 degree for 45 fields covering 46 WINGS clusters. We present the Johnson B- and V-band OmegaCAM photometry of 46 WINGS clusters. With a median seeing of 1 arcsecond in both B- and V-bands, our 25-minutes exposures in each band typically reach the 50% completeness level at V=23.1mag.

- One-side head-tail (OHT) galaxies are radio galaxies with a peculiar shape. They usually appear in galaxy clusters, but they have never been cataloged systematically. We design an automatic procedure to search for them in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters source catalog and compile a sample with 115 HT candidates. After cross-checking with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometric data and catalogs of galaxy clusters, we find that 69 of them are possible OHT galaxies. Most of them are close to the center of galaxy clusters. The lengths of their tails do not correlate with the projection distance to the center of the nearest galaxy clusters, but show weak anticorrelation with the cluster richness, and are inversely proportional to the radial velocity differences between clusters and host galaxies. Our catalog provides a unique sample to study this special type of radio galaxies.

- We aim at defining homogeneous selection criteria of small galaxy systems in order to build catalogues suitable to compare main properties of pairs, triplets, and groups with four or more members. To this end we use spectroscopic and photometric Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data to identify systems with a low number of members. We study global properties of these systems and the properties of their member galaxies finding that galaxies in groups are systematically redder and with lower star formation activity indicators than galaxies in pairs which have a higher fraction of star-forming galaxies. Triplet galaxies present intermediate trends between pairs and groups. We also find an enhancement of star formation activity for galaxies in small systems with companions closer than 100kpc, irrespective of the number of members. We have tested these analyses on SDSS mock catalogues derived from the Millennium simulation, finding as conservative thresholds 76 per cent completeness and a contamination of 23 per cent in small galaxy systems, when considering an extreme case of incompleteness due to fiber collisions. Nevertheless, we also found that the results obtained are not likely affected by projection effects. Our studies suggest that an extra galaxy in a system modify the properties of the member galaxies. In pairs, galaxy-galaxy interactions increase gas density and trigger starbursts. However, repeated interactions in triplets and groups can generate gas stripping, turbulence, and shocks quenching the star formation in these systems.

- We analyse the poorly studied open cluster King 1 in the second Galactic quadrant. From wide-field photometry, we have studied the spatial distribution of this cluster. We determined that the centre of King 1 is located at {alpha}_2000_=00:22 and {delta}_2000_=+64:23. By parameterizing the stellar density with a King profile, we have obtained a central density of {rho}_0_= 6.5+/-0.2star/arcmin^2^ and a core radius of r_core_=1.9+/-0.2arcmin. By comparing the observed colour-magnitude diagram of King 1 with those of similar open clusters and with different sets of isochrones, we have estimated an age of 2.8+/-0.3Gyr, a distance modulus of (m-M)_o_=10.6+/-0.1mag and a reddening of E(B-V)=0.80+/-0.05mag. To complete our analysis, we acquired medium resolution spectra for 189 stars in the area of King 1. From their derived radial velocities, we determined an average velocity <V_r_>=-53.1+/-3.1km/s. From the strength of the infrared CaII lines in red giants we have determined an average metallicity of <[M/H]>=+0.07+/-0.08dex. From spectral synthesis, we have also estimated an {alpha}-elements abundance of <[{alpha}/M]>=-0.10+/-0.08dex.

- Mean proper motions and parallaxes of 205 open clusters were determined from their member stars found in the Hipparcos (<I/239>) Catalogue. 360 clusters were searched for possible members, excluding nearby clusters with distances D<200pc. Members were selected using ground based information (photometry, radial velocity, proper motion, distance from the cluster centre) and information provided by Hipparcos (proper motion, parallax). Altogether 630 certain and 100 possible members were found. A comparison of the Hipparcos parallaxes with photometric distances of open clusters shows good agreement. The Hipparcos data confirm or reject the membership of several Cepheids in the studied clusters.

- Gaia Data Release 2 provides high-precision astrometry and three-band photometry for about 1.3 billion sources over the full sky. The precision, accuracy, and homogeneity of both astrometry and photometry are unprecedented. We highlight the power of the Gaia DR2 in studying many fine structures of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD). Gaia allows us to present many different HRDs, depending in particular on stellar population selections. We do not aim here for completeness in terms of types of stars or stellar evolutionary aspects. Instead, we have chosen several illustrative examples. We describe some of the selections that can be made in Gaia DR2 to highlight the main structures of the Gaia HRDs. We select both field and cluster (open and globular) stars, compare the observations with previous classifications and with stellar evolutionary tracks, and we present variations of the Gaia HRD with age, metallicity, and kinematics. Late stages of stellar evolution such as hot subdwarfs, post-AGB stars, planetary nebulae, and white dwarfs are also analysed, as well as low-mass brown dwarf objects. The Gaia HRDs are unprecedented in both precision and coverage of the various Milky Way stellar populations and stellar evolutionary phases. Many fine structures of the HRDs are presented. The clear split of the white dwarf sequence into hydrogen and helium white dwarfs is presented for the first time in an HRD. The relation between kinematics and the HRD is nicely illustrated. Two different populations in a classical kinematic selection of the halo are unambiguously identified in the HRD. Membership and mean parameters for a selected list of open clusters are provided. They allow drawing very detailed cluster sequences, highlighting fine structures, and providing extremely precise empirical isochrones that will lead to more insight in stellar physics. Gaia DR2 demonstrates the potential of combining precise astrometry and photometry for large samples for studies in stellar evolution and stellar population and opens an entire new area for HRD-based studies.

- We study the area around the HII region Sh 2-234, including the young open cluster Stock 8, to investigate the extent and definition of the association Aur OB2 and the possible role of triggering in massive cluster formation. We obtained Stromgren and J, H, Ks photometry for Stock 8 and Stromgren photometry for two other cluster candidates in the area, which we confirm as young open clusters and name Alicante 11 and Alicante 12. We took spectroscopy of ~33 early-type stars in the area, including the brightest cluster members. We calculate a common distance of 2.80+0.27-0.24kpc for the three open clusters and surrounding association. We derive an age 4-6Ma for Stock 8, and do not find a significantly different age for the other clusters or the association. The star LS V +34 23, with spectral type O8 II(f), is likely the main source of ionization of Sh 2-234. We observe an important population of pre-main-sequence stars, some of them with discs, associated with the B-type members lying on the main sequence. We interpret the region as an area of recent star formation with some residual and very localized ongoing star formation. We do not find evidence for sequential star formation on a large scale. The classical definition of Aur OB2 has to be reconsidered, because its two main open clusters, Stock 8 and NGC 1893, are not at the same distance. Stock 8 is probably located in the Perseus arm, but other nearby HII regions whose distances also place them in this arm show quite different distances and radial velocities and, therefore, are not connected.
