- We present deep wide-field optical CCD photometry and mid-infrared Spitzer/IRAC and MIPS 24{mu}m data for about 100000 stars in the young open cluster IC 1805. The members of IC 1805 were selected from their location in the various color-color and color-magnitude diagrams, and the presence of H{alpha} emission, mid-infrared excess emission, and X-ray emission. The reddening law toward IC 1805 is nearly normal (R_V_=3.05+/-0.06). However, the distance modulus of the cluster is estimated to be 11.9+/-0.2mag (d=2.4+/-0.2kpc) from the reddening-free color-magnitude diagrams, which is larger than the distance to the nearby massive star-forming region W3(OH) measured from the radio VLBA astrometry. We also determined the age of IC 1805 ({tau}_MSTO_=3.5Myr). In addition, we critically compared the age and mass scale from two pre-main-sequence evolution models. The initial mass function with a Salpeter-type slope of {Gamma}=-1.3+/-0.2 was obtained and the total mass of IC 1805 was estimated to be about 2700+/-200M_{sun}_. Finally, we found our distance determination to be statistically consistent with the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution Data Release 1, within the errors. The proper motion of the B-type stars shows an elongated distribution along the Galactic plane, which could be explained by some of the B-type stars being formed in small clouds dispersed by previous episodes of star formation or supernova explosions.

- Photometric observations of AGNs are important to construct light curves and to study variability behavior over different timescales. In this paper, the historical optical data compiled from the published literature are presented in tabular form as an optical database for 28 radio-selected BL Lacertae objects. Maximum optical variations are found and compared with the infrared ones. The faintest, brightest, and averaged magnitudes are presented for individual object. The variation is found correlated with polarization. The light curves are shown in figures along with the relation between color index and magnitude. For the color-magnitude relation, two objects, 0735+178 and 0537-441, show evidence that the color index increases with magnitude, indicating that the spectrum flattens when the source brightens, while three objects (0219+428, 1514-241, 2200+420) show the opposite behavior; an object, 0235+164, shows a brightness-dependent color index- magnitude correlation, while the rest of the objects do not show any clear tendency.

- We describe the final product of the North Celestial Cap Survey (NCCS) - the optical-UV-IR merged catalogue for the region within 10{deg} of the North Celestial Pole. The North Celestial Cap (NCC) region at {delta}>=80{deg} is poorly covered by modern CCD-based surveys. The optical part of the survey was observed in V, R and I with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) Observatory telescopes and was merged with GALEX UV and WISE IR data, producing the catalogue. More than four million objects were observed in at least one optical band. The final catalogue contains ~1.6 million sources observed in all three optical bands, of which some 1.4 million have WISE counterparts and ~300000 have GALEX counterparts. The astrometric accuracy of the optical NCCS data, derived from a comparison with the UCAC3 catalogue, is better than 0.2-arcsec and the photometry, when compared with Sloan Digital Sky Survey, is good to ~0.15mag for sources brighter than V=20.3, R=21.0 and I=19.2mag. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey point-extended source separation is reproduced with >92 per cent efficiency.

- We study variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using the deep optical multiband photometry data obtained from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC SSP) survey in the COSMOS field. The images analyzed here were taken with 8, 10, 13, and 15 epochs over three years in the g, r, i, and z bands, respectively. We identified 491 robust variable AGN candidates, down to i=25mag and with redshift up to 4.26. Ninety percent of the variability-selected AGNs are individually identified with the X-ray sources detected in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey. We investigate their properties in variability by using structure function analysis and find that the structure function for low-luminosity AGNs (L_bol_<~10^45^erg/s) shows a positive correlation with luminosity, which is the opposite trend for the luminous quasars. This trend is likely to be caused by a larger contribution of the host galaxy light for lower-luminosity AGNs. Using the model templates of galaxy spectra, we evaluate the amount of host galaxy contribution to the structure function analysis and find that dominance of the young stellar population is needed to explain the observed luminosity dependence. This suggests that low-luminosity AGNs at 0.8<~z<~1.8 are predominantly hosted in star-forming galaxies. The X-ray stacking analysis reveals the significant emission from the individually X-ray undetected AGNs in our variability-selected sample. The stacked samples show very large hardness ratios in their stacked X-ray spectrum, which suggests that these optically variable sources have large soft X-ray absorption by dust-free gas.

- The analysis of blazars' parameters from BZCAT leads to a conclusion that they do not have the same properties. The preliminary criterion to include an object in the catalog was the strong radio emission; however, two type of radio sources were selected: BL Lacertae (BLL) objects and Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQ). As a number of properties are typical of blazars (strong radio emission, optical variability, continuum optical spectra, polarization, high luminosity, etc.), using the optical data, we investigate them to clarify which property plays the most significant role in their classification as blazars. We found that 60% of blazars have optical variability. We use a technique developed based on POSS1 and POSS2 photometry and group the variability into extreme, strong, medium, and low classes. In the optical range, 51 blazars have powerful variability (extreme variables), and 126 are high variables. In addition, 63% of blazars have detected radiation in X-ray and 28% have detected radiation in gamma rays. We give the average statistical characteristics of blazars based on our analysis and calculations.

- The size of the dust torus in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their high-luminosity counterparts, quasars, can be inferred from the time delay between UV/optical accretion disk continuum variability and the response in the mid-infrared (MIR) torus emission. This dust reverberation mapping (RM) technique has been successfully applied to ~70 z<~0.3 AGNs and quasars. Here we present first results of our dust RM program for distant quasars covered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 region combining ~20yr ground-based optical light curves with 10yr MIR light curves from the WISE satellite. We measure a high-fidelity lag between W1 band (3.4{mu}m) and g band for 587 quasars over 0.3<~z<~2 (<z>~0.8) and two orders of magnitude in quasar luminosity. They tightly follow (intrinsic scatter ~0.17dex in lag) the IR lag-luminosity relation observed for z<0.3 AGNs, revealing a remarkable size-luminosity relation for the dust torus over more than four decades in AGN luminosity, with little dependence on additional quasar properties such as Eddington ratio and variability amplitude. This study motivates further investigations in the utility of dust RM for cosmology and strongly endorses a compelling science case for the combined 10yr Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (optical) and 5yr Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope 2{mu}m light curves in a deep survey for low-redshift AGN dust RM with much lower luminosities and shorter, measurable IR lags. The compiled optical and MIR light curves for 7384 quasars in our parent sample are made public with this work.

- We present medium-resolution spectra (R~2000-4000) at 0.4-1.0{mu}m and 0.7-2.5{mu}m of 16 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected with red color in the near-infrared (NIR) of J-K>2.0mag at z~0.3. We fit the H{beta}, H{alpha}, P{beta}, and P{alpha} lines from these spectra to obtain their luminosities and line widths. We derive the E(B-V) color excess values of the NIR-red AGNs using two methods, one based on the line-luminosity ratios and another based on the continuum slopes. The two E(B-V) values agree with each other at rms dispersion ~0.249. About half of the NIR-red AGNs have g'-K<5 magnitude, and we find that these NIR-red, but blue in optical-NIR AGNs, have E(B-V)~0, suggesting that a significant fraction of the NIR color-selected red AGNs are unobscured or only mildly obscured. After correcting for the dust extinction, we estimate the black hole (BH) masses and the bolometric luminosities of the NIR-red AGNs using the Paschen lines to calculate their Eddington ratios ({lambda}Edd). The median Eddington ratios of nine NIR-red AGNs (log({lambda}_Edd_~-0.654+/-0.176) are only mildly higher than those of unobscured type 1 AGNs (log({lambda}_Edd_~-0.961+/-0.008). Moreover, we find that the MBH-{sigma}* relation for three NIR-red AGNs is consistent with that of unobscured type 1 AGNs at similar redshift. These results suggest that the NIR-red color selection alone is not effective at picking up dusty, intermediate-stage AGNs.

- We present the first systematic study of the stellar populations of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the field, integrating the large area search and characterization of UDGs by the SMUDGes survey with the twelve-band optical photometry of the S-PLUS survey. Based on Bayesian modeling of the optical colors of UDGs, we determine the ages, metallicities, and stellar masses of 100 UDGs distributed in an area of ~330deg^2^ in the Stripe 82 region. We find that the stellar masses and metallicities of field UDGs are similar to those observed in clusters and follow the trends previously defined in studies of dwarf and giant galaxies. However, field UDGs have younger luminosity- weighted ages than do UDGs in clusters. We interpret this result to mean that field UDGs have more extended star formation histories, including some that continue to form stars at low levels to the present time. Finally, we examine stellar population scaling relations that show that UDGs are, as a population, similar to other low surface brightness galaxies.

- We present the first optical spectroscopy of five confirmed (or strong candidate) redback millisecond pulsar binaries, obtaining complete radial velocity curves for each companion star. The properties of these millisecond pulsar binaries with low-mass, hydrogen-rich companions are discussed in the context of the 14 confirmed and 10 candidate field redbacks. We find that the neutron stars in redbacks have a median mass of 1.78+/-0.09M_{sun}_ with a dispersion of {sigma}=0.21+/-0.09. Neutron stars with masses in excess of 2M_{sun}_ are consistent with, but not firmly demanded by, current observations. Redback companions have median masses of 0.36+/-0.04M_{sun}_ with a scatter of {sigma}=0.15+/-0.04M_{sun}_, and a tail possibly extending up to 0.7-0.9M_{sun}_. Candidate redbacks tend to have higher companion masses than confirmed redbacks, suggesting a possible selection bias against the detection of radio pulsations in these more massive candidate systems. The distribution of companion masses between redbacks and the less massive black widows continues to be strongly bimodal, which is an important constraint on evolutionary models for these systems. Among redbacks, the median efficiency of converting the pulsar spin-down energy to {gamma}-ray luminosity is ~10%.

- We test four competing models that aim to explain the nature of stars in spiral galaxies that are well away (>1kpc) from the midplane, the so-called thick disk: the stars may have gotten there through orbital migration, through satellite mergers and accretion, or through heating of pre-existing thin disk stars. The eccentricity distribution of thick disk stars has recently been proposed as a diagnostic to differentiate between these mechanisms. Drawing on SDSS-DR7, we have assembled a sample of 31535 G-dwarfs with six-dimensional phase-space information and metallicities and have derived the orbital eccentricities for them.
