- The evolution and structure of the Magellanic Clouds is currently under debate. The classical scenario in which both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC, SMC) are orbiting the Milky Way has been challenged by an alternative in which the LMC and SMC are in their first close passage to our Galaxy. The clouds are close enough to us to allow spatially resolved observation of their stars, and detailed studies of stellar populations in the galaxies are expected to be able to constrain the proposed scenarios. In particular, the west halo (WH) of the SMC was recently characterized with radial trends in age and metallicity that indicate tidal disruption. We intend to increase the sample of star clusters in the west halo of the SMC with homogeneous age, metallicity, and distance derivations to allow a better determination of age and metallicity gradients in this region. Distances and positions are compared with the orbital plane of the SMC depending on the scenario adopted. Comparisons of observed and synthetic V(B-V) colour-magnitude diagrams were used to derive age, metallicity, distance, and reddening for star clusters in the SMC west halo. Observations were carried out using the 4.1m SOAR telescope. Photometric completeness was determined through artificial star tests, and the members were selected by statistical comparison with a control field. We derived an age of 1.23+/-0.07Gyr and [Fe/H]=-0.87+/-0.07 for the reference cluster NGC 152, compatible with literature parameters. Age and metallicity gradients are confirmed in the WH: 2.6+/-0.6Gyr/{deg} and -0.19+/-0.09dex/{deg}, respectively. The age-metallicity relation for the WH has a low dispersion in metallicity and is compatible with a burst model of chemical enrichment. All WH clusters seem to follow the same stellar distribution predicted by dynamical models, with the exception of AM-3, which should belong to the counter-bridge. Bruck 6 is the youngest cluster in our sample. It is only 130+/-40Myr old and may have been formed during the tidal interaction of SMC-LMC that created the WH and the Magellanic bridge. We suggest that it is crucial to split the SMC cluster population into groups: main body, wing and bridge, counter-bridge, and WH. This is the way to analyse the complex star formation and dynamical history of our neighbour. In particular, we show that the WH has clear age and metallicity gradients and an age-metallicity relation that is also compatible with the dynamical model that claims a tidal influence of the LMC on the SMC.

- We investigate starspot distributions consistent with space-based photometry of F, G, and K stars in six stellar associations ranging in age from 10Myr to 4Gyr. We show that a simple light-curve statistic called the "smoothed amplitude" is proportional to stellar age as t^-1/2^, following a Skumanich-like spin-down relation. We marginalize over the unknown stellar inclinations by forward modeling the ensemble of light curves for direct comparison with the Kepler, K2, and TESS photometry. We sample the posterior distributions for spot coverage with approximate Bayesian computation. We find typical spot coverages in the range 1%-10%, which decrease with increasing stellar age. The spot coverage is proportional to t^n^ where n=-0.37+/-0.16, also statistically consistent with a Skumanich-like t^-1/2^ decay of starspot coverage with age. We apply two techniques to estimate the spot coverage of young exoplanet-hosting stars likely to be targeted for transmission spectroscopy with the James Webb Space Telescope, and estimate the bias in exoplanet radius measurements due to varying starspot coverage.

- We present a homogeneous catalog of 275 large (effective radius >~5.3") ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates lying within an ~290deg^2^ region surrounding the Coma Cluster. The catalog results from our automated postprocessing of data from the Legacy Surveys, a three-band imaging survey covering 14000deg^2^ of the extragalactic sky. We describe a pipeline that identifies UDGs and provides their basic parameters. The survey is as complete in these large UDGs as previously published UDG surveys of the central region of the Coma Cluster. We conclude that the majority of our detections are at roughly the distance of the Coma Cluster, implying effective radii >=2.5kpc, and that our sample contains a significant number of analogs of DF44 (SMDG1300580+265835), where the effective radius exceeds 4kpc, both within the cluster and in the surrounding field. The g-z color of our UDGs spans a large range, suggesting that even large UDGs may reflect a range of formation histories. A majority of the UDGs are consistent with being lower stellar mass analogs of red sequence galaxies, but we find both red and blue UDG candidates in the vicinity of the Coma Cluster and a relative overabundance of blue UDG candidates in the lower-density environments and the field. Our eventual processing of the full Legacy Surveys data will produce the largest, most homogeneous sample of large UDGs.

- The La Silla/QUEST Variability Survey (LSQ) and the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP II) are collaborating to discover and obtain photometric light curves for a large sample of low-redshift (z<0.1) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). The supernovae are discovered in the LSQ survey using the 1m ESO Schmidt telescope at the La Silla Observatory with the 10 square degree QUEST camera. The follow-up photometric observations are carried out using the 1m Swope telescope and the 2.5m du Pont telescopes at the Las Campanas Observatory. This paper describes the survey, discusses the methods of analyzing the data, and presents the light curves for the first 31 SNe Ia obtained in the survey. The SALT 2.4 supernova light-curve fitter was used to analyze the photometric data, and the Hubble diagram for this first sample is presented. The measurement errors for these supernovae averaged 4%, and their intrinsic spread was 14%.

- We aim to present 70 spectra of 68 new high-redshift type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) measured at ESO's VLT during the final two years of operation (2006-2008) of the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). This new sample complements the VLT three year spectral set. Altogether, these two data sets form the five year sample of SNLS SN Ia spectra measured at the VLT on which the final SNLS cosmological analysis will partly be based. In the redshift range considered, this sample is unique in terms of homogeneity and number of spectra. We use it to investigate the possibility of a spectral evolution of SNe Ia populations with redshift as well as SNe Ia spectral properties as a function of lightcurve fit parameters and the mass of the host-galaxy. Reduction and extraction are based on both IRAF standard tasks and our own reduction pipeline. Redshifts are estimated from host-galaxy lines whenever possible or alternatively from supernova features. We used the spectro-photometric SN Ia model SALT2 combined with a set of galaxy templates that model the host-galaxy contamination to assess the type Ia nature of the candidates. We identify 68 new SNe Ia with redshift ranging from z=0.207 to z=0.98 for an average redshift of z=0.62. Each spectrum is presented individually along with its best-fit SALT2 model. Adding this new sample to the three year VLT sample of SNLS, the final dataset contains 209 spectra corresponding to 192 SNe Ia identified at the VLT. We also publish the redshifts of other candidates (host galaxies or other transients) whose spectra were obtained at the same time as the spectra of live SNe Ia. This list provides a new redshift catalog useful for upcoming galaxy surveys. Using the full VLT SNe Ia sample, we build composite spectra around maximum light with cuts in color, the lightcurve shape parameter ("stretch"), host-galaxy mass and redshift. We find that high-z SNe Ia are bluer, brighter and have weaker intermediate mass element absorption lines than their low-z counterparts at a level consistent with what is expected from selection effects. We also find a flux excess in the range [3000-3400]{AA} for SNe Ia in low mass host-galaxies (M<10^10^M_{sun}_) or with locally blue U-V colors, and suggest that the UV flux (or local color) may be used in future cosmological studies as a third standardization parameter in addition to stretch and color.

- We present multiband photometry of 60 spectroscopically confirmed supernovae (SNe): 39 SNe II/IIP, 19 IIn, 1 IIb, and 1 that was originally classified as a IIn but later as a Ibn. Of these, 46 have only optical photometry, 6 have only near-infrared (NIR) photometry, and 8 have both optical and NIR. The median redshift of the sample is 0.016. We also present 195 optical spectra for 48 of the 60 SN. There are 26 optical and 2 NIR light curves of SNe II/IIP with redshifts z>0.01, some of which may give rise to useful distances for cosmological applications. All photometry was obtained between 2000 and 2011 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory (FLWO), via the 1.2m and 1.3m PAIRITEL telescopes for the optical and NIR, respectively. Each SN was observed in a subset of the u'UBVRIr'i'JHK_s_ bands. There are a total of 2932 optical and 816 NIR light curve points. Optical spectra were obtained using the FLWO 1.5m Tillinghast telescope with the FAST spectrograph and the MMT Telescope with the Blue Channel Spectrograph. Our photometry is in reasonable agreement with select samples from the literature: two-thirds of our star sequences have average V offsets within +/-0.02mag and roughly three-quarters of our light curves have average differences within +/-0.04mag. The data from this work and the literature will provide insight into SN II explosions, help with developing methods for photometric SN classification, and contribute to their use as cosmological distance indicators.

- We present the evolution of massive star progenitors of supernovae of type IIP. We take the example of the nearby and well-studied SN2013ej. We explore how convective overshoot affects the stellar structure, surface abundances, and effective temperature of massive stars, using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics. In particular, models with moderate overshoot (f=0.02-0.031) show the presence of blue loops in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with a red to blue excursion (log_10_[Teff/K] from <3.6 to >4.0) and transition back to red, during the core helium-burning phase. Models with overshoot outside this range of f values kept the star in the red supergiant state throughout the post-helium-ignition phases. The surface CNO abundance shows enrichment post-main-sequence and again around the time when helium is exhausted in the core. These evolutionary changes in surface CNO abundance are indistinguishable in the currently available observations due to large observational uncertainties. However, these observations may distinguish between the ratio of surface nitrogen to oxygen at different evolutionary stages of the star. We also compare the effects of convective overshoot on various parameters related to likelihood of explosion of a star as opposed to collapse to a black hole. These parameters are the compactness parameter, M_4_, and {mu}_4_. The combination {mu}_4_xM_4_, and {mu}_4_ have similar variations with f and both peak at f=0.032. We find that all of our 13M_{sun}_ models are likely to explode.

- We improve estimates of the stellar mass and mass-weighted average age of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) host galaxies by combining UV and near-IR photometry with optical photometry in our analysis. Using 206 SNe Ia drawn from the full three-year Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-II) Supernova Survey and multi-wavelength host-galaxy photometry from SDSS, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope Infrared Deep Sky Survey, we present evidence of a correlation (1.9{sigma} confidence level) between the residuals of SNe Ia about the best-fit Hubble relation and the mass-weighted average age of their host galaxies. The trend is such that older galaxies host SNe Ia that are brighter than average after standard light-curve corrections are made. We also confirm, at the 3.0{sigma} level, the trend seen by previous studies that more massive galaxies often host brighter SNe Ia after light-curve correction.

- Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Supernova Survey-II (SDSS-II SN Survey, Frieman et al., 2008AJ....135..338F), we measure the rate of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as a function of galaxy properties at intermediate redshift. A sample of 342 SNe Ia with 0.05<z<0.25 is constructed. Using broadband photometry and redshifts, we use the P\'EGASE.2 spectral energy distributions to estimate host galaxy stellar masses and recent star formation rates (SFRs).

- We present a joined photometric calibration for the SNLS and the SDSS supernova surveys. Our main delivery are catalogs of natural AB magnitudes for a large set of selected tertiary standard stars covering the science field of both surveys. Those catalogs are calibrated to the AB flux scale through observations of 5 primary spectrophotometric standard stars, for which HST-STIS spectra are available in the CALSPEC database. The estimate of the uncertainties associated to this calibration are delivered as a single covariance matrix. We also provide a model of the transmission efficiency of the SNLS photometric instrument MegaCam. Those transmission functions are required for the interpretation of MegaCam natural magnitudes in term of physical fluxes. Similar curves for the SDSS photometric instrument have been published in Doi et al. (2010AJ....139.1628D). Last, we release the measured magnitudes of the five CALSPEC standard stars in the magnitude system of the tertiary catalogs. This makes it possible to update the calibration of the tertiary catalogs if CALSPEC spectra for the primary standards are revised.
