- We report our initial discovery of 73 new planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) following confirmatory 2dF spectroscopy on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Preliminary candidate sources come from a 10 per cent sub-area of our new deep, high-resolution H{alpha} map of the central 25deg^2^ of the LMC obtained with the UK Schmidt Telescope. The depth of the high-resolution map was extended to R_equiv_~22 for H{alpha} (4.5x10^-17^erg/cm^2^/s/{AA}) by a process of multi-exposure median co-addition of a dozen 2-h H{alpha} exposures. The resulting map is at least 1-mag deeper than the best wide-field narrow-band LMC images currently available. This depth, combined with our selection technique, has also led to the discovery of extended asymptotic giant branch (AGB) haloes around many new and previously known LMC PNe for the first time. Once complete, our new survey is expected to triple the LMC PN population and have significant implications for the LMC PN luminosity function, kinematics, abundance gradients, chemical evolution and, via study of the AGB haloes, the initial to final mass relation for low- to intermediate-mass stars.

- We present new planetary nebulae (PNe) positions, radial velocities and magnitudes for six early-type galaxies obtained with the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph (PNS), along with derived two-dimensional velocity and velocity dispersion fields, and the {alpha} parameters (i.e. the number of PNe per unit luminosity). We also present new deep absorption-line long-slit kinematics for three galaxies in the sample, obtained with the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS2) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT).

- We present the results of a deep and uniform narrowband H{alpha} imaging survey for planetary nebulae (PNs) in the southern Galactic bulge. In our survey, we have found 56 new PNs and have rediscovered 45 known PNs. We have measured the radial velocities of this uniformly selected sample and have also remeasured radial velocities for a subset of 317 PNs from the Acker catalog. Using the COBE/DIRBE 1.25, 2.2, and 3.5{mu}m images, we show that there is a similar longitude distribution of the PNs and the COBE light in the zone of our deep survey. Also, we find that the extinction in our surveyed fields is not severe and that its distribution is fairly uniform. Finally, we present H{alpha} fluxes for 47 of our 56 newly discovered PNs and estimate the survey detection limit.

- Using the ESO 2.2m telescope with the 8Kx8K mosaic CCD, we have surveyed 2.8deg^2^ (~1.6{deg}x1.7{deg}) of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) to search for faint planetary nebulae (PNs); 34 PNs were previously known in this central region. We identified 25 new PNs, all faint and spectroscopically confirmed.

- The spatial structure of the emission lines and continuum over the 50-arcsecond extent of the nearby, O-rich, PN NGC 7009 (Saturn Nebula) have been observed with the MUSE integral field spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope. This study concentrates on maps of line emission and their interpretation in terms of physical conditions. MUSE Science Verification data, in <0.6-arcsecond seeing, have been reduced and analysed as maps of emission lines and continuum over the wavelength range 4750-9350{AA}. The dust extinction, the electron densities and temperatures of various phases of the ionized gas, abundances of species from low to high ionization and some total abundances are determined using standard techniques. Emission line maps over the bright shells are presented, from neutral to the highest ionization available (HeII and [MnV]). For collisionally excited lines (CELs), maps of electron temperature (Te from [NII] and [SIII]) and density (Ne from [SII] and [ClIII]) are available and for optical recombination lines (ORLs) temperature (from the Paschen jump and ratio of HeI lines) and density (from high Paschen lines). These estimates are compared: for the first time, maps of the differences in CEL and ORL Te's have been derived, and correspondingly a map of t^2^ between a CEL and ORL temperature, showing considerable detail. Total abundances of only He and O were formed, the latter using three ionization correction factors. However the map of He/H is not flat, departing by ~2% from a constant value, with remnants corresponding to ionization structures. An integrated spectrum over an area of 2340-arcseconds squared was also formed and compared to 1D photoionization models. The spatial variation of a range of nebular parameters illustrates the complexity of the ionized media in NGC 7009. These MUSE data are very rich with detections of hundreds of lines over areas of hundreds of arcseconds squared and follow-on studies are outlined.

- The halos of elliptical galaxies are faint and difficult to explore, but they contain vital clues to both structure and formation. We present the results of an imaging and spectroscopic survey for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the nearby elliptical NGC 5128. We extend the work of Hui and coworkers (Cat. <J/ApJ/449/592>) well into the halo of the galaxy - out to distances of 100 and 50kpc along the major and minor axes. We now know of 1141 PNe in NGC 5128, 780 of which are confirmed. Of these 780 PNe, 349 are new from this survey, and 148 are at radii beyond 20kpc. PNe exist at distances up to 80kpc (~15r_e_), showing that the stellar halo extends to the limit of our data.

- We present the results of a radial velocity survey of planetary nebulae (PNs) in the normal elliptical galaxy NGC 3379 performed with the Kitt Peak 4m telescope and the NESSIE multifiber spectrograph. In two half-nights, we measured 29 PNs with projected galactocentric distances between 0.4 and 3.8 effective radii (1<R<10kpc) with an observational uncertainty of ~7km/s. These data extend 3 times further into the halo than any previous absorption-line velocity study. The velocity dispersion and photometric profile of the galaxy agrees extremely well with that expected from a constant mass-to-light ratio, isotropic orbit Jaffe model with M/L_B_~7; the best-fitting anisotropic models from a quadratic programming algorithm also give M/L_B_~7. The data are consistent with models that contain no dark matter within 3.5 effective radii of the galaxy's nucleus.
