- We look for common proper motion companions to stars of the nearby young {beta} Pictoris moving group. First, we compiled a list of 185 {beta} Pictoris members and candidate members from 35 representative works. Next, we used the Aladin and STILTS virtual observatory tools and the PPMXL proper motion and Washington Double Star catalogues to look for companion candidates. The resulting potential companions were subjects of a dedicated astro-photometric follow-up using public data from all-sky surveys. After discarding 67 sources by proper motion and 31 by colour-magnitude diagrams, we obtained a final list of 36 common proper motion systems. The binding energy of two of them is perhaps too small to be considered physically bound. Of the 36 pairs and multiple systems, eight are new, 16 have only one stellar component previously classified as a {beta} Pictoris member, and three have secondaries at or below the hydrogen-burning limit. Sixteen stars are reported here for the first time as moving group members. The unexpected large number of high-order multiple systems, 12 triples and two quadruples among 36 systems, may suggest a biased list of members towards close binaries or an increment of the high-order-multiple fraction for very wide systems.

- The census of stellar and substellar companions of nearby stars is largely incomplete, in particular towards the low mass brown dwarf and long-period exoplanets. It is however of fundamental importance to understand the stellar and planetary formation and evolution mechanisms. Nearby stars are particularly favorable targets for high precision astrometry. We aim at characterizing the presence of physical companions of stellar and substellar mass in orbit around nearby stars. Orbiting secondary bodies influence the proper motion of their parent star through their gravitational reflex motion. Using the Hipparcos and Gaia DR2 catalogs, we determine the long-term proper motion of the stars common to these two catalogs. We then search for a proper motion anomaly (PMa) between the long-term proper motion vector and the Gaia DR2 (or Hipparcos) measurements, indicative of the presence of a perturbing secondary object. We focus our analysis on the 6741 nearby stars located within 50pc, and we also present a catalog of the PMa for >99 percent of the stars of the full Hipparcos catalog. A fraction of 30 percent of the studied stars presents a PMa at a level of more than 3 sigma. The PMa allows us to detect orbiting companions, or set stringent limits to their presence. We present a few illustrations of the PMa analysis to interesting targets. We set upper limits of 0.1-0.3MJ to potential planets orbiting Proxima between 1 and 10au (P_orb_=3 to 100 years). We confirm that Proxima is gravitationally bound to alpha Cen. We recover the masses of the known companions of epsilon Eri, epsilon Ind, Ross 614 and beta Pic. We also detect the signature of a possible planet of a few jovian masses orbiting tau Ceti. Based on only 22 months of Gaia data, the DR2 has limitations, but its combination with the Hipparcos catalog and the very high accuracy of the derived PMa already enables to set valuable constraints on the binarity of nearby objects. The detection of tangential velocity anomalies at a median accuracy of sigma({Delta}v_T_)=1.0m/s per parsec of distance is already possible with the Gaia DR2. This type of analysis opens the possibility to identify long period orbital companions otherwise inaccessible. The complementarity of Gaia (for long orbital periods), radial velocity and transit techniques (for short periods) already appears as remarkably powerful.

- The Hipparcos catalog and its Double and Multiple System Annex (DMSA) lists 4099 components with individual proper motions and coordinates on the epoch 1991.25. Many of these long-period binary stars are also present in Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2). Using the available relative positions and proper motions separated by 24.25yr, the equations of relative orbital motion can be solved for the two epoch eccentric anomalies, orbital period, and eccentricity. This method employs elimination of the linear Thiele-Innes unknowns and nonlinear optimization of the remaining condition equations. The quality of these solutions is compromised by the insufficient condition and modest precision of the Hipparcos astrometric data, as revealed by Monte Carlo simulations with artificially perturbed data points. The presence of multiple systems and optical pairs can also perturb the results. Limited experiments with artificial data indicate that useful estimates can be obtained with a 25yr epoch difference for wide binaries with orbital periods up to ~500yr. The prospects of this method dramatically improve with the proposed next-generation space astrometry missions such as Gaia-NIR and Theia, especially when additional conditions are included from astrometric or spectroscopic measurements. An ancillary catalog of cross-identification and astrometric information for 1295 double-star pairs cross-matched in Gaia DR2 and Hipparcos is also published.

- To address the statistics of binary stars in the 8 Myr old Upper Scorpius (USco) star formation region, we conducted a speckle interferometric survey of 614 association members more massive than 0.4 M_{sun}_ (spectral types earlier than M3V) based on the list of Luhman et al. (2018, J/AJ/156/271). We resolved 187 pairs, 55 of which are new discoveries. Also using the published data and the Gaia DR2 (Cat. I/345), a catalog of 250 physical binaries was produced. We carefully estimated detection limits for each target and studied binary statistics in the separation range from 0.06" to 20" (9-2800 au), as well as clustering at larger separations. The frequency of companions with mass ratios q>0.3 in this separation range is 0.33+/-0.04 and 0.35+/-0.04 for early M- and solar-type stars, respectively, larger by 1.62+/-0.22 and 1.39+/-0.18 times compared to field stars of similar masses. The excess is produced mostly by pairs closer than 100 au. At separations from 100 to 10^4^ au, the separation distribution and companion fraction resemble those of solar-type stars in the field. However, unlike in the field, we see a relative deficit of equal-mass binaries at separations of ~500 au, compared to smaller and larger separations. The distribution of q depends on the separation, with a preference of larger q and a larger fraction of twins with q>0.95 at smaller separations. The binary population of USco differs from binaries in the field in several ways and suggests that binary statistics is not universal.

- We present a sample of 386 BL Lacertae candidates identified from 2860deg^2^ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopic database. The candidates are primarily selected to have quasi-featureless optical spectra and low proper motions as measured from SDSS and USNO-B positions; however, our ability to separate Galactic from extragalactic quasi-featureless objects (QFOs) on the basis of proper motion alone is limited by the lack of reliable proper motion measurements for faint objects. Based largely on this remarkably clean color separation, we subdivide the sample into 240 probable candidates and 146 additional less probable (likely stellar) candidates.

- The very young sigma Orionis cluster (about 3Ma) is a cornerstone for the understanding of the formation of stars and substellar objects down to planetary masses. However, its stellar population is far to be completely known. This study has the purpose of identifying and characterising the most massive stars of sigma Orionis to complement current and future deep searches for brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects in the cluster. I have cross-correlated the sources in the Tycho and 2MASS catalogues in a region of 30arcmin radius with centre in the O-type star sigma Ori A. In the area, I have studied the membership in the Ori OB 1b Association of the brightest stars in the optical using astrometric, X-ray and infrared and optical photometric data from public catalogues and spectroscopic data from the literature. A list of 26 young stars, four candidate young stars and 16 probable foreground stars has arised from the study. Seven young stars probably harbour discs (four are new). There is no mass-dependence of the disc frequency in the cluster. I have derived for the first time the mass spectrum in sigma Orionis from 1.1 to 24M_{sun}_ (alpha=+2.0^+0.2^_-0.1_; roughly Salpeter-like). I have also provided additional proofs on the existence of several spatially superimposed stellar populations in the direction of sigma Orionis. Finally, the cluster may be closer and older than previously considered.

- We obtain estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters for a previously published sample of 1777 relatively bright (9<B<14) metal-poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. The original Frebel+ (2006, J/ApJ/652/1585; Paper I) analysis of these stars was able to derive estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] only for a subset of the sample, due to limitations in the methodology then available. A new spectroscopic analysis pipeline has been used to obtain estimates of T_eff_, logg, [Fe/H], and [C/Fe] for almost the entire data set. This sample is very local-about 90% of the stars are located within 0.5kpc of the Sun. We consider the chemodynamical properties of these stars in concert with a similarly local sample of stars from a recent analysis of the Bidelman and MacConnell "weak metal" candidates by Beers+ (2014, J/ApJ/794/58). We use this combined sample to identify possible members of the halo stream of stars suggested by Helmi+ (1999Natur.402...53H) and Chiba & Beers (2000AJ....119.2843C), as well as stars that may be associated with stripped debris from the putative parent dwarf of the globular cluster Omega Centauri, suggested to exist by previous authors. We identify a clear increase in the cumulative frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with declining metallicity, as well as an increase in the fraction of CEMP stars with distance from the Galactic plane, consistent with previous results. We also identify a relatively large number of CEMP stars with kinematics consistent with the metal-weak thick-disk population, with possible implications for its origin.

- A number of bright stars is missing from the PPM Star Catalogue, both on the northern <I/146> and on the southern <I/193> hemisphere. The Bright Stars Supplement described here makes PPM complete down to V=7.5 mag. For this purpose it lists all missing stars brighter than V=7.6 mag that we could find in published star lists. Their total number is 275. Only 2 of them are brighter than V=3.5. This replaces the December 1992 edition (catalogue I/194) of the Bright Stars Supplement which inadvertently contained 46 duplicates of stars already contained in the main parts of PPM.

- The upcoming NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will obtain space-based uninterrupted light curves for a large sample of bright white dwarfs distributed across the entire sky, providing a very rich resource for asteroseismological studies and the search for transits from planetary debris. We have compiled an all-sky catalogue of ultraviolet, optical and infrared photometry as well as proper motions, which we propose as an essential tool for the preliminary identification and characterization of potential targets. We present data for 1864 known white dwarfs and 305 high-probability white dwarf candidates brighter than 17mag. We describe the spectroscopic follow-up of 135 stars, of which 82 are white dwarfs and 25 are hot subdwarfs. The new confirmed stars include six pulsating white dwarf candidates (ZZ Cetis), and nine white dwarf binaries with a cool main- sequence companion. We identify one star with a spectroscopic distance of only 25pc from the Sun. Around the time TESS is launched, we foresee that all white dwarfs in this sample will have trigonometric parallaxes measured by the ESA Gaia mission next year.

- We report a measurement of the streaming motion of the stars in the Galactic bar with the red clump giants (RCGs) using the data of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II). We measure the proper motion of 46961 stars and divide RCGs into bright and faint subsamples that on average will be closer to the near and far sides of the bar, respectively. We find that the far-side RCGs (4979 stars) have a proper motion of {Delta}<{mu}>~1.5+/-0.11mas/yr toward the negative longitudes relative to the near-side RCGs (3610 stars).
