- We present the results of spectroscopic follow-up observations for a sample of 71 red objects with high proper motions in the range 0.08-1.14 arcsec/yr as detected using APM and SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys (SSS) measurements of multi-epoch photographic Schmidt plates. Red objects were selected by combining the photographic BjRI magnitudes with 2MASS near-infrared JHKs magnitudes. Some 50 of the 71 spectroscopically classified objects turn out to be late-type (>M6) dwarfs and in more detail, the sample includes 35 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types between M8 and L2, some previously reported, as well as five M-type subdwarfs, including a cool esdM6 object, SSSPM J0500-5406. Distance estimates based on the spectral types and 2MASS J magnitudes place almost all of the late-type (>M6) dwarfs within 50pc, with 25 objects located inside the 25pc limit of the catalogue of nearby stars. Most of the early-type M dwarfs are located at larger distances of 100-200pc, suggesting halo kinematics for some of them. All objects with Halpha equivalent widths larger than 10 Angstroms have relatively small tangential velocities (<50km/s). Finally, some late-type but blue objects are candidate binaries.

- Slit spectra have been obtained for 82 stars for which the objective-prism radial-velocity catalogue of Stock lists velocities over 130km/s in magnitude. The slit spectra reveal that many of these objects are F-K stars of low metal abundance, including some stars apparently as metal weak as any presently known. Radial velocities were derived from the slit spectra to examine the reliability of the large objective-prism velocities. The slit results confirm that the majority of the stars are indeed of high velocity, but show that the objective-prism technique tends to produce velocities systematically too large in magnitude by about 40km/s. It was also found that a large objective-prism velocity that is of low weight or from spectra near a plate edge is likely spurious. A search of the 10000 entries in Stock's catalogue yields 205 objects with radial-velocity magnitudes over 130km/s. Sixty-three of these velocities are not suspect because of low weight or edge proximity. An additional 14 stars of lower quality prism velocities were confirmed to have high velocities from the slit spectra. The high-velocity stars appear to form two distinct groups: metal-weak F-K stars and spectroscopically normal main-sequence A stars. Slit spectra were obtained on six nights in April 1978 utilizing the Boller and Chivens spectrograph and the Carnegie image tube at the Cassegrain focus of the 1-m Yale telescope at CTIO.

- We report results of speckle-interferometric monitoring of visual hierarchical systems using the newly commissioned instrument NN-EXPLORE Exoplanet and Stellar Speckle Imager at the 3.5 m WIYN telescope. During one year, 390 measurements of 129 resolved subsystems were made, while some targets were unresolved. Using our astrometry and archival data, we computed 36 orbits (27 for the first time). Spectro-interferometric orbits of seven pairs are determined by combining positional measurements with radial velocities measured, mostly, with the Center for Astrophysics digital speedometers. For the hierarchical systems HIP 65026 (periods 49 and 1.23 yr) and HIP 85209 (periods 34 and 1.23 yr) we determined both the inner and the outer orbits using astrometry and radial velocities and measured the mutual orbit inclinations of 11.3{deg}+/-1.0{deg} and 12.0{deg}+/-3.0{deg}, respectively. Four bright stars are resolved for the first time; two of those are triple systems. Several visual subsystems announced in the literature are shown to be spurious. We note that subsystems in compact hierarchies with outer separations less than 100 au tend to have less eccentric orbits compared to wider hierarchies.

- Within the central 10pc of our Galaxy lies a dense cluster of stars. This nuclear star cluster forms a distinct component of the Galaxy, and similar nuclear star clusters are found in most nearby spiral and elliptical galaxies. Studying the structure and kinematics of nuclear star clusters reveals the history of mass accretion and growth of galaxy nuclei and central massive black holes. Because the Milky Way nuclear star cluster is at a distance of only 8 kpc, we can spatially resolve the cluster on sub-parsec scales. This makes the Milky Way nuclear star cluster a reference object for understanding the formation of all nuclear star clusters.

- Spectral survey of Case emission-line galaxies

- The results of the follow-up spectroscopy of 178 emission-line galaxy (ELG) candidates from the Case objective-prism survey and nine Markarian galaxies with the 6m telescope are described. Only the candidates classified in the Case survey as those with emission lines were observed with the aim to form a statistical sample of blue compact galaxies (BCGs) with strong emission lines in the zone RA: 8h-16h, and DE: =+29deg-+38deg. We present the redshifts, equivalent widths and flux ratios for the strongest lines and the spectrum type for most of the galaxies with detected emission lines. A significant fraction (about 23%) of the observed Case galaxies do not show emission lines in blue. Preliminary analysis of the data is presented and the properties of the observed ELGs are compared with those of other known samples.

- Fundamental parameters characterizing the end-state of intermediate-mass stars may be constrained by discovering planetary nebulae (PNe) in open clusters (OCs). Cluster membership may be exploited to establish the distance, luminosity, age, and physical size for PNe, and the intrinsic luminosity and mass of its central star. Four potential PN-OC associations were investigated to assess the cluster membership for the PNe. Radial velocities were measured from intermediate-resolution optical spectra, complemented with previous estimates in the literature.When the radial velocity study supported the PN/OC association, we analyzed whether other parameters (e.g., age, distance, reddening, central star brightness) were consistent with this conclusion.

- We present results of an investigation of the X-ray properties, age distribution, and kinematical characteristics of a high-galactic latitude sample of late-type field stars selected from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). The sample comprises 254 RASS sources with optical counterparts of spectral types F to M distributed over six study areas located at |b|>~20{deg}, and Dec>=-9{deg}. A detailed study was carried out for the subsample of ~200 G, K, and M stars. Lithium abundances were determined for 179 G-M stars. Radial velocities were measured for most of the 141 G and K type stars of the sample. Combined with proper motions these data were used to study the age distribution and the kinematical properties of the sample. Based on the lithium abundances half of the G-K stars were found to be younger than the Hyades (660Myr). About 25% are comparable in age to the Pleiades (100Myr). A small subsample of 10 stars is younger than the Pleiades. They are therefore most likely pre-main sequence stars. Kinematically the PMS and Pleiades-type stars appear to form a group with space velocities close to the Castor moving group but clearly distinct from the Local Association.

- We have developed a method to identify planetary nebula (PN) candidates in imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This method exploits the SDSS's five-band sampling of emission lines in PN spectra, which results in a color signature distinct from that of other sources. Selection criteria based on this signature can be applied to nearby galaxies in which PNe appear as point sources. We applied these criteria to the whole area of M31 as scanned by the SDSS, selecting 167 PN candidates that are located in the outer regions of M31. The spectra of 80 selected candidates were then observed with the 2.2m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. These observations and cross-checks with literature data show that our method has a selection rate efficiency of about 90%, but the efficiency is different for the different groups of PN candidates. In the outer regions of M31, PNe trace different well-known morphological features like the Northern Spur, the NGC 205 Loop, the G1 Clump, etc. In general, the distribution of PNe in the outer region 8<R<20kpc along the minor axis shows the "extended disk"-a rotationally supported low surface brightness structure with an exponential scale length of 3.21+/-0.14kpc and a total mass of ~10^10^M_{sun}_, which is equivalent to the mass of M33. We report the discovery of three PN candidates with projected locations in the center of Andromeda NE, a very low surface brightness giant stellar structure in the outer halo of M31. Two of the PNe were spectroscopically confirmed as genuine PNe. These two PNe are located at projected distances along the major axis of ~48Kpc and ~41Kpc from the center of M31 and are the most distant PNe in M31 found up to now. With the new PN data at hand we see the obvious kinematic connection between the continuation of the Giant Stream and the Northern Spur. We suggest that 20%-30% of the stars in the Northern Spur area may belong to the Giant Stream. In our data we also see a possible kinematic connection between the Giant Stream and PNe in Andromeda NE, suggesting that Andromeda NE could be the core or remnant of the Giant Stream. Using PN data we estimate the total mass of the Giant Stream progenitor to be {approx}10^9^M_{sun}_. About 90% of its stars appear to have been lost during the interaction with M31.

- The catalog results from a survey for distant Field K giants in the Galactic halo made for purposes of locating a chemically and kinematically unbiased sample out to about 25 kpc from the Sun. The motivation for the study and sample selection are outlined by Ratnatunga & Freeman (1985ApJ...291..260R), while details and analysis of the results will be found in Ratnatunga & Freeman (1989). Three high-galactic latitude fields each of 20 square degrees, designated by their Selected-Area identifications, include the following: SA 141 (l=240,b=-85); SA 189 (277, -50); and SA 127 (272, +38), and have the apparent magnitude range 13 < V < 16 and color range (B-V) > 0.9. Stars were selected from PDS photographic photometry of Schmidt plates (see Ratnatunga 1983, catalog II/121). K-giant selection used the Mgb+MgH feature at 5100A from digital image analysis of PDS scans of ESO 1-m Schmidt telescope objective-prism spectra with 450 A/mm at H-gamma resolution on IIIa-J plates exposed through a Schott GG475 filter. Luminosity confirmation, line-of-sight velocities, and metallicity were determined from 2-A resolution slit spectra taken with the 4-m Anglo- Australian and 1.9-m Mount Stromlo telescopes. Cross identifications exist for some stars in the SA 141 SGP field only.

- We present basic atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg, vt, and [Fe/H]) as well as luminosities, masses, radii, and absolute radial velocities for 348 stars, presumably giants, from the ~1000 star sample observed within the Penn State-Torun Centre for Astronomy Planet Search (PTPS) with the High Resolution Spectrograph of the 9.2m Hobby-Eberly Telescope. The stellar parameters (luminosities, masses, radii) are key to properly interpreting newly discovered low-mass companions, while a systematic study of the complete sample will create a basis for future statistical considerations concerning the appearance of low-mass companions around evolved low- and intermediate-mass stars.
