- Intermediate resolution spectroscopy from the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope is analysed for 63 photometrically selected low-mass (0.08-0.30M_{sun}_) candidates of the open cluster NGC 2547. We have confirmed membership for most of these stars using radial velocities, and found that lithium remains undepleted for cluster stars with I>17.54+/-0.14 and Ks>14.86+/-0.12. From these results, several pre-main-sequence evolutionary models give almost model independent ages of 34-36Myr, with a precision of 10%. These ages are only slightly larger than the ages of 25-35(+/-5)Myr obtained using the same models to fit isochrones to higher mass stars descending towards the zero-age main-sequence, both in empirically calibrated and theoretical colour-magnitude diagrams. This agreement between age determinations in different mass ranges is an excellent test of the current generation of low-mass pre-main-sequence stellar models and lends confidence to ages determined with either method between 30 and 120Myr.

- We present the results of a spectroscopic survey of the recently discovered faint Milky Way satellites Bootes, Ursa Major I, Ursa Major II and Willman 1 (Wil1). Using the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph mounted on the Keck II telescope, we have obtained samples that contain from ~15 to ~85 probable members of these satellites for which we derive radial velocities precise to a few km/s down to i~21-22. About half of these stars are observed with a high enough signal-to-noise ratio to estimate their metallicity to within +/-0.2dex. The characteristics of all the observed stars are made available, along with those of the Canes Venatici I dwarf galaxy that have been analysed in a companion paper.

- With this survey we aim to derive accurate, multi-epoch radial velocities and atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg, [M/H] and V_rot_sini) of a large sample of carefully selected red clump (RC) stars located over a great circle at high Galactic latitudes. We acquired data of the program stars of high signal-to-noise ratio and high resolution with the Asiago Echelle spectrograph. We obtained radial velocities by applying cross-correlation and atmospheric parameters via chi2 fitting to a synthetic spectral library. Extensive tests were carried out by re-observing with the same instrument a large number of standard stars taken from a variety of sources in literature.

- The goal of our survey is to provide accurate and multi-epoch radial velocities, atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg and [M/H]), distances, and space velocities of faint red clump (RC) stars. We recorded high signal-to-noise (S/N>=200) spectra of RC stars over the 4750-5950{AA} range at a resolving power 5500. The target stars are distributed across the great circle of the celestial equator. Radial velocities were obtained via cross-correlation with IAU radial velocity standards. Atmospheric parameters were derived via {chi}^2^ fit to a synthetic spectral library. A large number of RC stars from other surveys were re-observed to check the consistency of our results and the absence of offsets and trends.

- A new metallicity distribution and an age-metallicity relation are presented for 437 nearby F and G turn-off and sub-giant stars selected from radial velocity data of Nidever et al. (2002, Cat. J/ApJS/141/503). Photometric metallicities are derived from uvby-H{beta} photometry, and the stellar ages from the isochrones of Bergbusch & VandenBerg (2001ApJ...556..322B) as transformed to uvby photometry using the methods of Clem et al. (2004, Cat. J/AJ/127/1227).

- We report radial velocities (RVs), projected equatorial velocities (vsini) and CaII triplet (CaT) chromospheric activity indices for 237 late-K to mid-M candidate members of the young open cluster NGC 2516. These stars have published rotation periods between 0.1 and 15d. Intermediate-resolution spectra were obtained using the Giraffe spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. Membership was confirmed on the basis of their RVs for 210 targets.

- We present the results of high-resolution spectroscopic and high-precision photometric observations on a sample of 129 late-F and G-type nearby stars selected on the basis of their large rotational velocity. Using also data from the Hipparcos satellite, CORAVEL and from the ROSAT satellite database, we infer spectral types, compute radial velocities, vsini, Li abundances and X-ray luminosities and investigate the single or binary nature of the sample stars. Such a careful analysis of our sample shows a large fraction of binaries (~62%) and of young single disk stars. In particular, at least 9 stars can be considered bona-fide PMS or ZAMS objects, and 30 stars are identified as SBs for the first time. Information on the presence of Ca II K emission and on optical variability is given for some of the stars of the sample. The photometry has been obtained at the European Southern Observatory (ESO-La silla, Chile) during several observing runs (19/11-03/12 1993, 24/11-04/12 1994, 15-28/01/1995 and 1-12/10/1995), by using the 50cm ESO telescope. - The relation between the Ultra Compact Dwarf galaxies (hereafter UCDs) recently discovered in the Fornax cluster (Drinkwater et al., 2003Natur.423..519D; Mieske et al., 2002, Cat. <J/A+A/383/823>) and the brightest globular clusters associated with the central galaxy NGC 1399 has been investigated in the spectroscopic Fornax Compact Object Survey FCOS. FCOS was carried out with the 2.5m du Pont telescope at Las Campanas, in the three nights of 2002/12/04 to 2002/12/06. Mieske et al. (2002, Cat. <J/A+A/383/823>) deals with the first part FCOS-1, this paper deals with the larger FCOS-2. The spectral resolution of FCOS was approx. 4{AA}. In the FCOS, 280 unresolved objects with 0<(V-I)<1.5mag in the magnitude space covering UCDs and bright globular clusters (18<V<21mag) were observed spectroscopically, among them 185 in FCOS-2. In the entire FCOS-sample there are five already known UCDs and 54 new Fornax members, 12 from FCOS-1 and 42 from FCOS-2.

- Several recent studies have demonstrated that the Galactic bulge hosts two components with different mean metallicities, and possibly different spatial distribution and kinematics. As a consequence, both the metallicity distribution and the radial velocity of bulge stars vary across different line of sights. We present here the metallicity distribution function of red clump stars in 26 fields spread across a wide area of the bulge, with special emphasis on fields close to Galactic plane, at latitudes b=-2 and b=-1, that were not explored before. This work includes new metallicities from a sample of ~5000 K giant stars, observed at spectral resolution R~6500, in the Calcium II Triplet region. They are the main dataset of the GIRAFFE Inner Bulge Survey. As part of the same survey we have previously published results for a sample of ~600 K giant stars, at latitude b~-4 derived from higher resolution spectra (R=22500). The combined sample allows us to trace and characterize the metal poor and metal rich bulge populations down to the inner bulge. We present a density map for each of the two components. Contrary to the expectations from previous works, we found the metal poor population to be more centrally concentrated than the metal rich one, and with a more axisymmetric spatial distribution. The metal rich population, on the other hand, is arranged in a boxy distribution, consistent with an edge-on bar. By coupling metallicities and radial velocities we show that the metal poor population has a velocity dispersion that varies rather mildly with latitude. On the contrary, the metal rich population has a low velocity dispersion far from the plane (b=-8.5) but it has a steeper gradient with latitude, becoming higher than the metal poor one in the innermost field (b=-1). This work provides new observational constraints on the actual chemodynamical properties of the Galactic bulge, that will help discriminating among different formation models.

- We present HI observations of the galaxies in the first list of the Karachentsev catalog of previously unknown nearby dwarf galaxies (Karachentseva & Karachentsev, 1998, Cat. <J/A+AS/127/409>). This survey covers all known nearby galaxy groups within the Local Volume (i.e. within 10Mpc) and their environment, that is about 25% of the total sky. A total of 257 galaxies have been observed with a detection rate of 60%. We searched a frequency band corresponding to heliocentric radial velocities from -470km/s to ~+4000km/s. Non-detections are either due to limited coverage in radial velocity, confusion with Local HI (mainly in the velocity range -140km/s to +20km/s), or lack of sensitivity for very weak emission. 25% of the detected galaxies are located within the Local Volume. Those galaxies are dwarf galaxies judged by their optical linear diameter (1.4+/-0.2kpc on the average), their mean total HI mass (4.6x10^7^M_{sun}_), and their observed linewidths (39km/s).
