- We use the Marcario Low Resolution Spectrograph (LRS) at the Hobby-Eberly- Telescope (HET) to study the kinematics of pseudobulges and classical bulges in the nearby universe. We present major-axis rotational velocities, velocity dispersions, and h3 and h4 moments derived from high-resolution (39km/s) spectra for 45 S0 to Sc galaxies; for 27 of the galaxies we also present minor axis data. We combine our kinematics with bulge-to-disk decompositions. We demonstrate for the first time that purely kinematic diagnostics of the bulge dichotomy agree systematically with those based on Sersic index. Low Sersic index bulges have both increased rotational support (higher v/sigma values) and on average lower central velocity dispersions. Further- more, we confirm that the same correlation also holds when visual morphologies are used to diagnose bulge type. The previously noted trend of photometrically flattened bulges to have shallower velocity dispersion profiles turns to be significant and systematic if the Sersic index is used to distinguish between pseudobulges and classical bulges. The anti-correlation between h3 and v/sigma observed in elliptical galaxies is also observed in intermediate type galaxies, irrespective of bulge type. Finally, we present evidence for formerly undetected counter rotation in the two systems NGC 3945 and NGC 4736.

- We present Subaru/Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph and Keck/Deep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrometer medium-resolution spectroscopy of a tidally disrupting Milky Way (MW) globular cluster Palomar 5 (Pal 5) and its tidal stream. The observed fields are located to cover an angular extent of ~17{deg} along the stream, providing an opportunity to investigate a trend in line-of-sight velocities (V_los_) along the stream, which is essential to constrain its orbit and underlying gravitational potential of the MW's dark matter halo. A spectral fitting technique is applied to the observed spectra to obtain stellar parameters and metallicities ([Fe/H]) of the target stars. The 19 stars most likely belonging to the central Pal 5 cluster have a mean V_los_ of -58.1+/-0.7km/s and metallicity [Fe/H]=-1.35+/-0.06dex, both of which are in good agreement with those derived in previous high-resolution spectroscopic studies. Assuming that the stream stars have the same [Fe/H] as the progenitor cluster, the derived [Fe/H] and V_los_ values are used to estimate the possible V_los_ range of the member stars at each location along the stream. Because of the heavy contamination of the field MW stars, the estimated V_los_ range depends on prior assumptions about the stream's V_los_, which highlights the importance of more definitely identifying the member stars using proper motion and chemical abundances to obtain unbiased information of V_los_ in the outer part of the Pal 5 stream. The models for the gravitational potential of the MW's dark matter halo that are compatible with the estimated V_los_ range are discussed.

- The Octans association is one of several young stellar moving groups recently discovered in the Solar neighbourhood and hence a valuable laboratory for studies of stellar, circumstellar disc and planetary evolution. However, a lack of low-mass members or any members with trigonometric parallaxes means the age, distance and space motion of the group are poorly constrained. To better determine its membership and age, we present the first spectroscopic survey for new K- and M-type Octans members, resulting in the discovery of 29 UV-bright K5-M4 stars with kinematics, photometry and distances consistent with existing members. Nine new members possess strong LiI 6708 absorption, which allow us to estimate a lithium age of 30-40Myr, similar to that of the Tucana-Horologium association and bracketed by the firm lithium depletion boundary ages of the beta Pictoris (20Myr) and Argus/IC 2391 (50Myr) associations. Several stars also show hints in our medium-resolution spectra of fast rotation or spectroscopic binarity. More so than other nearby associations, Octans is much larger than its age and internal velocity dispersion imply. It may be the dispersing remnant of a sparse, extended structure which includes some younger members of the foreground Octans-Near association recently proposed by Zuckerman and collaborators.

- We present far-red, intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of 572 photometrically selected, low-mass stars (0.2<M/M_{sun}_<0.7) in the young open cluster NGC 2516, using the FLAMES spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. Precise radial velocities confirm membership for 210 stars that have published rotation periods from spot-modulated light curves and for another 144 stars in which periodic modulation could not be found. The two subsamples are compared and no significant differences are found between their positions in colour-magnitude diagrams, the distribution of their projected equatorial velocities or their levels of chromospheric activity.

- We present the results from a Gemini snapshot radial-velocity survey of 44 low-mass white-dwarf candidates selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy. To find sub-hour orbital period binary systems, our time-series spectroscopy had cadences of 2-8min over a period of 20-30min. Through follow-up observations at Gemini and the MMT, we identify four double-degenerate binary systems with periods ranging from 53min to 7h. The shortest period system, SDSS J123549.88+154319.3, was recently identified as a sub-hour period detached binary by Breedt and collaborators. Here, we refine the orbital and physical parameters of this system. High-speed and time-domain survey photometry observations do not reveal eclipses or other photometric effects in any of our targets. We compare the period distribution of these four systems with the orbital period distribution of known double white dwarfs; the median period decreases from 0.64 to 0.24d for M=0.3-0.5M_{sun}_ to M<0.3M_{sun}_ white dwarfs. However, we do not find a statistically significant correlation between the orbital period and white-dwarf mass.

- Void population consists mainly of late-type and low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxies, whose atomic hydrogen is the main component of their baryonic matter. Therefore observations of void galaxy HI are mandatory to understand both their evolution and dynamics. Our aim was to obtain integrated HI parameters for a fainter part of the nearby Lynx-Cancer void galaxy sample (total of 45 objects) with the Nancay Radio Telescope (NRT) and to conduct the comparative analysis of the whole 103 void galaxies with known HI data with a sample of similar galaxies residing in denser environments of the Local Volume. For HI observations we used the NRT with its sensitive antenna/receiver system FORT and standard processing. The comparison of the void and "control" samples on the parameter M(HI)/L_B_ is conducted with the non-parametric method "The 2x2 Contingency Table test". We obtained new HI data for about 40% of the Lynx-Cancer galaxy sample. Along with data from the literature, we use for further analysis data for 103 void objects. The proxy of the evolutional parameter M(HI)/L_B_ of the void sample is compared with that of 82 galaxies of morphological types 8-10 residing in the Local Volume groups and aggregates. At the confidence level of P=0.988, we conclude that for the same luminosity, these void galaxies are systematically gas-richer, in average by ~39%. This result is consistent with the authors' earlier conclusion on the smaller gas metallicities and evidences for the slower low-mass galaxy evolution in voids.

- Two hundred and seventeen HI profiles at positions approximately 1degree apart in the bridge region between the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds have been observed with a 15' arc beam. Diagrams of all the profiles, lists of column densities and average radial velocities are given, together with details of the extensive Gaussian analysis needed to account for the components. It is shown that the bridge region is most complex. (a) Two radial velocity (1) groups, +214 and +238km/s, represent the actual HI bridge between the two galaxies. (b) Three other components, at mean radial velocities of +155, +177 and +195km/s are seen to be integral parts of the SMC, stretching east to RA~04h. (c) A further three components in groups at mean radial Velocities +253, +272 and +293km/s appear to be extensions of HI from the main body of the LMC. Nine sets of five closely spaced observations in the lower Magellanic Stream and in the bridge region at high sensitivity supply further information about the region.

- The Magellanic Bridge (MB) is a gaseous stream that links the Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic Clouds. Current simulations suggest that the MB forms from a recent interaction between the Clouds. In this scenario, the MB should also have an associated stellar bridge formed by stars tidally stripped from the SMC by the LMC. There are several observational evidences for these stripped stars, from the presence of intermediate age populations in the MB and carbon stars, to the recent observation of an over-density of RR Lyrae stars offset from the MB. However, spectroscopic confirmation of stripped stars in the MB remains lacking. In this paper, we use medium resolution spectra to derive the radial velocities and metallicities of stars in two fields along the MB. We show from both their chemistry and kinematics that the bulk of these stars must have been tidally stripped from the SMC. This is the first spectroscopic evidence for a dwarf galaxy being

- We investigate the possibility that the dwarf galaxies Crater II and Hercules have previously been tidally stripped by the Milky Way. We present Magellan/IMACS spectra of candidate member stars in both objects. We identify 37 members of Crater II, 25 of which have velocity measurements in the literature, and we classify three stars within that subset as possible binaries. We find that including or removing these binary candidates does not change the derived velocity dispersion of Crater II. Excluding the binary candidates, we measure a velocity dispersion of {sigma}_Vlos_=2.7_-0.4_^+0.5^km/s, corresponding to M/L=47_-13_^+17^M_{sun}_/L_{sun}_. We measure a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.95_-0.05_^+0.06^, with a dispersion of {sigma}_[Fe/H]_=0.18_-0.08_^+0.06^. Our velocity dispersion and metallicity measurements agree with previous measurements for Crater II, and confirm that the galaxy resides in a kinematically cold dark-matter halo. We also search for spectroscopic members stripped from Hercules in the possible extratidal stellar overdensities surrounding the dwarf. For both galaxies, we calculate proper motions using Gaia DR2 astrometry, and use their full 6D phase space information to evaluate the probability that their orbits approach sufficiently close to the Milky Way to experience tidal stripping. Given the available kinematic data, we find a probability of ~40% that Hercules has suffered tidal stripping. The proper motion of Crater II makes it almost certain to be stripped.
