- The aim of this project is to identify low-redshift host galaxies of quasar absorption-line systems by selecting galaxies that are seen in projection onto quasar sightlines. To this end, we use the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to construct a parent sample of 97489 galaxy/quasar projections at impact parameters of up to 100 kpc to the foreground galaxy. We then search the quasar spectra for absorption-line systems of CaII and NaI within +/-500km/s1 of the galaxy's velocity. This yields 92 CaII and 16 NaI absorption systems.

- Isolated galaxies in low-density regions are significant in the sense that they are least affected by the hierarchical pattern of galaxy growth and interactions with perturbers, at least for the last few gigayears. To form a comprehensive picture of the star-formation history of isolated galaxies, we constructed a catalog of isolated galaxies and their comparison sample in relatively denser environments. The galaxies are drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 in the redshift range of 0.025<z<0.044. We performed a visual inspection and classified their morphology following the Hubble classification scheme. For the spectroscopic study, we make use of the catalog provided by Oh et al. (2011ApJS..195...13O). We confirm most of the earlier understanding on isolated galaxies. The most remarkable additional results are as follows. Isolated galaxies are dominantly late type with the morphology distribution (E:S0:S:Irr)=(9.9:11.3:77.6:1.2)%. The frequency of elliptical galaxies among isolated galaxies is only a third of that of the comparison sample. Most of the photometric and spectroscopic properties are surprisingly similar between the isolated and comparison samples. However, early-type isolated galaxies are less massive by 50% and younger (by H{beta}) by 20% than their counterparts in the comparison sample. This can be explained as a result of different merger and star-formation histories for differing environments in the hierarchical merger paradigm.

- We study a large sample of narrow-line radio galaxies (NLRGs) with extended radio structures. Using 1.4GHz radio luminosities L_1.4_, narrow optical emission line luminosities L_[OIII]_ and L_Halpha_, as well as black hole masses M_BH_ derived from stellar velocity dispersions measured from the optical spectra obtained with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we find that (1) NLRGs cover about four decades of the Eddington ratio, {lambda}{equiv}L_bol_/L_Edd_{prop.to}L_line_/M_BH_; (2) L_1.4_/M_BH_ strongly correlates with {lambda}; and (3) radio loudness, R=L_1.4_/L_Line_, strongly anti-correlates with {lambda}. A very broad range of the Eddington ratio indicates that the parent population of NLRGs includes both radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and broad-line radio galaxies (BLRGs). The correlations they obey and their high jet production efficiencies favor a jet production model which involves the so-called magnetically choked accretion scenario. In this model, production of the jet is dominated by the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, and the magnetic fields in the vicinity of the central black hole are confined by the ram pressure of the accretion flow. Since large net magnetic flux accumulated in central regions of the accretion flow required by the model can take place only via geometrically thick accretion, we speculate that the massive, "cold" accretion events associated with luminous emission-line active galactic nucleus can be accompanied by an efficient jet production only if preceded by a hot, very sub-Eddington accretion phase.

- We report the results of a systematic search for signatures of metal lines in quasar spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 3 (DR3), focusing on finding intervening absorbers via detection of their OVI doublet. Here, we present the search algorithm and criteria for distinguishing candidates from spurious Ly{alpha} forest lines. In addition, we compare our findings with simulations of the Ly{alpha} forest in order to estimate the detectability of OVI doublets over various redshift intervals. We have obtained a sample of 1756 OVI doublet candidates with rest-frame equivalent width (EW)>=0.05{AA} in 855 active galactic nuclei spectra (out of 3702 objects with redshifts in the accessible range for OVI detection).

- The observed relation between the soft X-ray and the optical-ultraviolet emission in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is nonlinear and it is usually parametrized as a dependence between the logarithm of the monochromatic luminosity at 2500{AA} and at 2keV. Previous investigations have found that the dispersion of this relation is rather high (~0.35-0.4 in log units), which may be caused by measurement uncertainties, variability, and intrinsic dispersion due to differences in the AGN physical properties (e.g., different accretion modes). We show that, once optically selected quasars with homogeneous SED and X-ray detection are selected, and dust reddened and/or gas obscured objects are not included, the measured dispersion drops to significantly lower values (i.e., ~0.21-0.24dex). We show that the residual dispersion is due to some extent to variability, and to remaining measurement uncertainties. Therefore, the real physical intrinsic dispersion should be <0.21dex. Such a tight relation, valid over four decades in luminosity, must be the manifestation of an intrinsic (and universal) physical relation between the disk, emitting the primary radiation, and the hot electron corona emitting X-rays.

- In order to place constraints on cosmology through optical surveys of galaxy clusters, one must first understand the properties of those clusters. To this end, we introduce the Mass Analysis Tool for Chandra (MATCha), a pipeline that uses a parallellized algorithm to analyze archival Chandra data. MATCha simultaneously calculates X-ray temperatures and luminosities and performs centering measurements for hundreds of potential galaxy clusters using archival X-ray exposures. We run MATCha on the redMaPPer SDSS DR8 cluster catalog and use MATCha's output X-ray temperatures and luminosities to analyze the galaxy cluster temperature-richness, luminosity-richness, luminosity-temperature, and temperature-luminosity scaling relations. We detect 447 clusters and determine 246 r_2500_ temperatures across all redshifts. Within 0.1<z<0.35, we find that r_2500_ T_X_ scales with optical richness ({lambda}) as ln(k_B_T_X_/1.0keV)=(0.52+/-0.05)ln({lambda}/70)+(1.85+/-0.03) with an intrinsic scatter of 0.27+/-0.02 (1{sigma}). We investigate the distribution of offsets between the X-ray center and redMaPPer center within 0.1<z<0.35, finding that 68.3%+/-6.5% of clusters are well-centered. However, we find a broad tail of large offsets in this distribution, and we explore some of the causes of redMaPPer miscentering.

- We present the results of two complementary investigations into the nature of strong (rest equivalent width, Wr>1.0{AA}) MgII absorption systems at high redshift. The first line of questioning examines the complete Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 set of quasar spectra to determine the evolution of the incidence of strong MgII absorption. This search resulted in 7421 confirmed MgII systems of Wr>1.0{AA}, yielding a >95% complete statistical sample of 4835 absorbers (systems detected in S/N>7 spectral regions) spanning a redshift range 0.35<z<2.3.

- A sample of nearly 9000 early-type galaxies, in the redshift range 0.01<=z<=0.3, was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) using morphological and spectral criteria. The paper describes how the sample was selected, presents examples of images and seeing-corrected fits to the observed surface brightness profiles, describes our method for estimating K-corrections, and shows that the SDSS spectra are of sufficiently high quality to measure velocity dispersions accurately. It also provides catalogs of the measured photometric and spectroscopic parameters. In related papers, these data are used to study how early-type galaxy observables, including luminosity, effective radius, surface brightness, color, and velocity dispersion, are correlated with one another.

- We present a sample of nearby dwarf galaxies with radio-selected accreting massive black holes (BHs), the majority of which are non-nuclear. We observed 111 galaxies using sensitive, high-resolution observations from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its most extended A-configuration at X band (~8-12GHz), yielding a typical angular resolution of ~0.25" and rms noise of ~15{mu}Jy. Our targets were selected by crossmatching galaxies with stellar masses M_*_<=3x10^9^M_{sun}_ and redshifts z<0.055 in the NASA-Sloan Atlas with the VLA Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters Survey. With our new high-resolution VLA observations, we detect compact radio sources toward 39 galaxies and carefully evaluate possible origins for the radio emission, including thermal HII regions, supernova remnants, younger radio supernovae, background interlopers, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the target galaxies. We find that 13 dwarf galaxies almost certainly host active massive BHs, despite the fact that only one object was previously identified as having optical signatures of an AGN. We also identify a candidate dual radio AGN in a more massive galaxy system. The majority of the radio-detected BHs are offset from the center of the host galaxies, with some systems showing signs of interactions/mergers. Our results indicate that massive BHs need not always live in the nuclei of dwarf galaxies, confirming predictions from simulations. Moreover, searches attempting to constrain BH seed formation using observations of dwarf galaxies need to account for such a population of "wandering" BHs.

- When can an active galactic nucleus (AGN) be considered radio-loud? Following the established view of the AGNs inner workings, an AGN is radio-loud if associated with relativistic ejections emitting a radio synchrotron spectrum (i.e., it is a "jetted" AGN). In this paper we exploit the AGN main sequence that offers a powerful tool to contextualize radio properties. If large samples of optically-selected quasars are considered, AGNs are identified as radio-loud if their Kellermann's radio loudness ratio R_K_>10. Our aims are to characterize the optical properties of different classes based on radioloudness within the main sequence and to test whether the condition R_K_>10 is sufficient for the identification of RL AGNs, since the origin of relatively strong radio emission may not be necessarily due to relativistic ejection. A sample of 355 quasars was selected by cross-correlating the FIRST survey with the SDSS DR14 quasar catalog. We classified the optical spectra according to their spectral types along the main sequence of quasars. For each spectral type, we distinguished compact and extended morphology (providing a FIRST-based atlas of radio maps in the latter case), and three classes of radio-loudness: detected (specific flux ratio in the g band and at 1.4GHz, R_K'_<10), intermediate (10R_K'_<70), and radio loud (R_K'_>=70). The analysis revealed systematic differences between radio-detected (i.e., radio-quiet), radio-intermediate, and radio-loud in each spectral type along the main sequence. We show that spectral bins that contain the extreme Population A sources have radio power compatible with emission by mechanisms ultimately due to star formation processes. Radio-loud sources of Population B are characteristically jetted. Their broad H{beta} profiles can be interpreted as due to a binary broad-line region. We suggest that RL Population B sources should be preferential targets for the search of black hole binaries, and present a sample of binary black hole AGN candidates. The validity of the Kellermann's criterion may be dependent on the source location along the quasar main sequence. The consideration of the MS trends allowed to distinguish between sources whose radio emission mechanisms is "jetted" from the ones where the mechanism is likely to be fundamentally different.
