- We present a catalog of detailed visual classifications for 14034 galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4 (DR4, Cat. <II/267>). Our sample includes nearly all spectroscopically targeted galaxies in the redshift range 0.01<z<0.1 down to an apparent extinction-corrected limit of g<16mag. In addition to T-Types, we record the existence of bars, rings, lenses, tails, warps, dust lanes, arm flocculence, and multiplicity. This sample defines a comprehensive local galaxy sample which we will use in future papers to study low-redshift morphology. It will also prove useful for calibrating automated galaxy classification algorithms. In this paper, we describe the classification methodology used, detail the systematics and biases of our sample, and summarize the overall statistical properties of the sample, noting the most obvious trends that are relevant for general comparisons of our catalog with previously published work.

- The 3D-HST and CANDELS programs have provided WFC3 and ACS spectroscopy and photometry over ~900arcmin^2^ in five fields: AEGIS, COSMOS, GOODS-North, GOODS-South, and the UKIDSS UDS field. All these fields have a wealth of publicly available imaging data sets in addition to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data, which makes it possible to construct the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of objects over a wide wavelength range. In this paper we describe a photometric analysis of the CANDELS and 3D-HST HST imaging and the ancillary imaging data at wavelengths 0.3-8{mu}m. Objects were selected in the WFC3 near-IR bands, and their SEDs were determined by carefully taking the effects of the point-spread function in each observation into account. A total of 147 distinct imaging data sets were used in the analysis.

- We established an accurate comparison between observationally and theoretically estimated major merger rates over a large range of mass (logM_bar_/M_{sun}_=9.9-11.4) and redshift (z=0.7-1.6). For this, we combined a new estimate of the merger rate from an exhaustive count of pairs within the virial radius of massive galaxies at z~1.265 and cross-validated with their morphology, with estimates from the morpho-kinematic analysis of two other samples. Theoretical predictions were estimated using semi-empirical models with inputs matching the properties of the observed samples, while specific visibility time-scales scaled to the observed samples were used. Both theory and observations are found to agree within 30 per cent of the observed value, which provides strong support to the hierarchical assembly of galaxies over the probed ranges of mass and redshift. Here, we find that ~60 per cent of population of local massive (M_stellar_=10^10.3-11.6^M_{sun}_) galaxies would have undergone a wet major merger since z=1.5, consistently with previous studies. Such recent mergers are expected to result in the (re-)formation of a significant fraction of local disc galaxies.

- We present reduced data and data products from the 3D-HST survey, a 248-orbit HST Treasury program. The survey obtained WFC3 G141 grism spectroscopy in four of the five CANDELS fields: AEGIS, COSMOS, GOODS-S, and UDS, along with WFC3 H_140_ imaging, parallel ACS G800L spectroscopy, and parallel I_814_ imaging. In a previous paper, we presented photometric catalogs in these four fields and in GOODS-N, the fifth CANDELS field. Here we describe and present the WFC3 G141 spectroscopic data, again augmented with data from GO-1600 in GOODS-N (PI: B. Weiner). We developed software to automatically and optimally extract interlaced two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) spectra for all objects in the Skelton+ (2014, J/ApJS/214/24) photometric catalogs. The 2D spectra and the multi-band photometry were fit simultaneously to determine redshifts and emission line strengths, taking the morphology of the galaxies explicitly into account. The resulting catalog has redshifts and line strengths (where available) for 22548 unique objects down to JH_IR_<=24 (79609 unique objects down to JH_IR<=26). Of these, 5459 galaxies are at z>1.5 and 9621 are at 0.7<z<1.5, where H{alpha} falls in the G141 wavelength coverage. The typical redshift error for JH_IR_<=24 galaxies is {sigma}_z_~0.003x(1+z), i.e., one native WFC3 pixel. The 3{sigma} limit for emission line fluxes of point sources is 2.1x10^-17^erg/s/cm^2^.

- We extend and apply a model-independent analysis method developed earlier by Daly & Djorgovski (2003ApJ...597....9D and 2004, Cat. <J/ApJ/612/652>) to new supernova, radio galaxy, and galaxy cluster samples to study the acceleration history of the universe and the properties of the dark energy. There is good agreement between results obtained with radio galaxies and supernovae, suggesting that both distance indicators are reliable. The deceleration parameter q(z) is obtained assuming only the validity of the FRW metric, allowing for a range of values of space curvature, and independent of a gravity theory and the physical nature of the contents of the universe. We show that q_0_ is independent of space curvature, and obtain q_0_=-0.48+/-0.11. The transition redshift when q_0_=0 is z_T_=0.78^+0.08^_-0.27_ for zero space curvature, and has a weak dependence on space curvature. We find good agreement between model-independent quantities and those predicted by general relativity, indicating that GR provides a good description of the data over look-back times of ten billion years.

- Understanding the nature of dark energy, which appears to drive the expansion of the universe, is one of the central problems of physical cosmology today. In an earlier paper (Daly & Djorgovski, 2003ApJ...597....9D) we proposed a novel method to determine the expansion rate E(z) and the deceleration parameter q(z) in a largely model-independent way, directly from the data on coordinate distances y(z). Here we expand this methodology to include measurements of the pressure of dark energy p(z), its normalized energy density fraction f(z), and the equation-of-state parameter w(z). We then apply this methodology to a new, combined data set of distances to supernovae and radio galaxies.

- We report on the first results of a new study aimed at understanding the diversity and evolutionary history of distant galactic bulges in the context of now well-established trends for pure spheroidal galaxies. To this end, bulges have been isolated for a sample of 137 spiral galaxies within the redshift range 0.1<z<1.2 in the GOODS fields. Using proven photometric techniques, we determine the characteristic parameters (size, surface brightness, profile shape) of both the disk and bulge components in our sample. In agreement with earlier work that utilized aperture colors, distant bulges show a broader range of optical colors than would be the case for passively evolving populations. To quantify the amount of recent star formation necessary to explain this result, we used DEIMOS to secure stellar velocity dispersions for a sizeable fraction of our sample. This has enabled us to compare the fundamental plane of our distant bulges with that for spheroidal galaxies in a similar redshift range.

- The XQ-100 survey provides optical and near-infrared coverage of 36 blindly selected, intervening damped Lyman {alpha} systems (DLAs) at 2<z_abs_<4, simultaneously covering the MgII doublet at {lambda}{lambda}2796,2803{AA}, and the Ly{alpha} transition. Using the XQ-100 DLA sample, we investigate the completeness of selecting DLA absorbers based on their MgII rest-frame equivalent width (W_0_^2796^) at these redshifts. Of the 29 DLAs with clean Mg II profiles, we find that six (20 per cent of DLAs) have W_0_^2796^<0.6{AA}. The DLA incidence rate of W_0_^2796^<0.6{AA} absorbers is a factor of ~5 higher than what is seen in z~1 samples, indicating a potential evolution in the MgII properties of DLAs with redshift. All of the W_0_^2796^<0.6{AA} DLAs have low metallicities (-2.5<[M/H]<-1.7), small velocity widths (v_90_<50km/s), and tend to have relatively low N(HI). We demonstrate that the exclusion of these low W_0_^2796^ DLAs results in a higher mean N(HI) which in turn leads to an ~7 per cent increase in the cosmological gas density of HI of DLAs at 2<z_abs_<4; and that this exclusion has a minimal effect on the HI-weighted mean metallicity.

- Interpreting abundances of damped Ly-{alpha} absorbers (DLAs) from absorption-line spectroscopy has typically been a challenge because of the presence of dust. Nevertheless, because DLAs trace distant gas-rich galaxies regardless of their luminosity, they provide an attractive way of measuring the evolution of the metallicity of the neutral gas with cosmic time. This has been done extensively so far, but typically not taking proper dust corrections into account. The aims of this paper are to: (i) provide a simplified way of calculating dust corrections, based on a single observed [X/Fe], (ii) assess the importance of dust corrections for DLA metallicities and their evolution, and (iii) investigate the cosmic evolution of iron for a large DLA sample. We have derived dust corrections based on the observed [Zn/Fe], [Si/Fe], or [S/Fe], and confirmed their robustness. We present dust-corrected metallicities in a scale of [Fe/H]tot for 236 DLAs over a broad range of z, and assess the extent of dust corrections for different metals at different metallicities. Dust corrections in DLAs are important even for Zn (typically of 0.1-0.2, and up to 0.5dex), which is often neglected. Finally, we study the evolution of the dust-corrected metallicity with z. The DLA metallicities decrease with redshift, by a factor of 50-100 from today to ~12.6 billion years ago (z=5). When including dust corrections, the average DLA metallicities are 0.4-0.5dex higher than without corrections. The upper envelope of the relation between metallicity and z reaches solar metallicity at z<~0.5, although some systems can have solar metallicity already out to z~3.
