- Deep rest-frame optical spectroscopy is critical for characterizing and understanding the physical conditions and properties of the ionized gas in galaxies. Here, we present a new spectroscopic survey called "Metal Abundances across Cosmic Time" or MACT, which will obtain rest-frame optical spectra for ~3000 emission-line galaxies. This paper describes the optical spectroscopy that has been conducted with MMT/Hectospec and Keck/DEIMOS for ~1900 z=0.1-1 emission-line galaxies selected from our narrowband and intermediate-band imaging in the Subaru Deep Field. In addition, we present a sample of 164 galaxies for which we have measured the weak [OIII]{lambda}4363 line (66 with at least 3{sigma} detections and 98 with significant upper limits). This nebular emission line determines the gas-phase metallicity by measuring the electron temperature of the ionized gas. This paper presents the optical spectra, emission-line measurements, interstellar properties (e.g., metallicity, gas density), and stellar properties (e.g., star formation rates, stellar mass). Paper II of the MACT survey (Ly et al. 2016ApJ...828...67L) presents the first results on the stellar mass-gas metallicity relation at z<=1 using the sample with [OIII]{lambda}4363 measurements.

- We present the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS), a search for galaxy clusters at 0.7<=z<=1.5 based upon data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission. MaDCoWS is the first cluster survey capable of discovering massive clusters at these redshifts over the full extragalactic sky. The search is divided into two regions-the region of the extragalactic sky covered by Pan-STARRS ({delta}{>}-30{deg}) and the remainder of the southern extragalactic sky at {delta}{<}-30{deg} for which shallower optical data from the SuperCOSMOS Sky Survey is available. In this paper, we describe the search algorithm, characterize the sample, and present the first MaDCoWS data release-catalogs of the 2433 highest amplitude detections in the WISE-Pan-STARRS region and the 250 highest amplitude detections in the WISE-SuperCOSMOS region. A total of 1723 of the detections from the WISE-Pan-STARRS sample have also been observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope, providing photometric redshifts and richnesses, and an additional 64 detections within the WISE-SuperCOSMOS region also have photometric redshifts and richnesses. Spectroscopic redshifts for 38 MaDCoWS clusters with IRAC photometry demonstrate that the photometric redshifts have an uncertainty of {sigma}z/(1+z)~0.036. Combining the richness measurements with Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations of MaDCoWS clusters, we also present a preliminary mass-richness relation that can be used to infer the approximate mass distribution of the full sample. The estimated median mass for the WISE-Pan-STARRS catalog is M_500_=1.6_-0.8_^+0.7^x10^14^M_{sun}_, with the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich data confirming that we detect clusters with masses up to M_500_~5x10^14^M_{sun}_ (_M200_~10^15^M_{sun}_).

- We quadruple the number of quasars known behind the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from 56 (42 in the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE)-III LMC fields) to 200 by spectroscopically confirming 169 (144 new) quasars from a sample of 845 observed candidates in four ~3 deg^2^ Anglo-Australian Telescope/AAOmega fields south of the LMC center. The candidates were selected based on their Spitzer mid-infrared colors, X-ray emission, and/or optical variability properties in the database of the OGLE microlensing survey. The contaminating sources can be divided into 115 young stellar objects (YSOs), 17 planetary nebulae (PNe), 39 Be and 24 blue stars, 68 red stars, and 12 objects classed as either YSO/PN or blue star/YSO. There are also 402 targets with either featureless spectra or too low signal-to-noise ratios for source classification. Our quasar sample is 50% (30%) complete at I = 18.6 mag (19.3 mag). The newly discovered active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provide many additional reference points for proper motion studies of the LMC, and the sample includes 10 bright AGNs (I < 18 mag) that are potentially suitable for absorption line studies. Their primary use, however, is for detailed studies of quasar variability, as they all have long-term, high cadence, continuously growing light curves from the microlensing surveys of the LMC. Completing the existing Magellanic Quasars Survey fields in the LMC and Small Magellanic Cloud should yield a sample of ~700 well-monitored AGNs, and expanding it to the larger regions covered by the OGLE-IV survey should yield a sample of ~3600 AGNs.

- In Churchill et al. (2013ApJ...763L..42C), we used halo abundance matching applied to 182 galaxies in the MgII Absorber-Galaxy Catalog (MAGIICAT) and showed that the mean MgII{lambda}2796 equivalent width follows a tight inverse-square power law, W_r_(2796){prop.to}(D/R_vir_)^-2^, with projected location relative to the galaxy virial radius and that the MgII absorption covering fraction is effectively invariant with galaxy virial mass, M_h_, over the range 10.7<=logM_h_/M_{sun}_<=13.9. In this work, we explore multivariate relationships between W_r_(2796), virial mass, impact parameter, virial radius, and the theoretical cooling radius that further elucidate self-similarity in the cool/warm (T=10^4^-10^4.5^K) circumgalactic medium (CGM) with virial mass. We show that virial mass determines the extent and strength of the MgII absorbing gas such that the mean W_r_(2796) increases with virial mass at fixed distance while decreasing with galactocentric distance for fixed virial mass. The majority of the absorbing gas resides within D=~0.3R_vir_, independent of both virial mass and minimum absorption threshold; inside this region, and perhaps also in the region 0.3<D/R_vir_<=1, the mean W_r_(2796) is independent of virial mass. Contrary to absorber-galaxy cross-correlation studies, we show there is no anti-correlation between W_r_(2796) and virial mass. We discuss how simulations and theory constrained by observations support self-similarity of the cool/warm CGM via the physics governing star formation, gas-phase metal enrichment, recycling efficiency of galactic scale winds, filament and merger accretion, and overdensity of local environment as a function of virial mass.

- We describe the MgII Absorber-Galaxy Catalog, MAGIICAT, a compilation of 182 spectroscopically identified intermediate redshift (0.07<=z<=1.1) galaxies with measurements of MgII {lambda}{lambda}2796,2803 absorption from their circumgalactic medium within projected distances of 200kpc from background quasars. In this work, we present "isolated" galaxies, which are defined as having no spectroscopically identified galaxy within a projected distance of 100kpc and a line of sight velocity separation of 500km/s. We standardized all galaxy properties to the {Lambda}CDM cosmology and galaxy luminosities, absolute magnitudes, and rest-frame colors to the B- and K-band on the AB system. We present galaxy properties and rest-frame MgII equivalent width, W_r_(2796), versus galaxy redshift. The well-known anti-correlation between W_r_(2796) and quasar-galaxy impact parameter, D, is significant to the 8{sigma} level. The mean color of MAGIICAT galaxies is consistent with an Sbc galaxy for all redshifts. We also present B- and K-band luminosity functions for different W_r_(2796) and redshift subsamples: "weak absorbing" [W_r_(2796)<0.3{AA}], "strong absorbing" [W_r_(2796)>=0.3{AA}], low redshift (z{<}<z>), and high redshift (z{>=}<z>), where <z> = 0.359 is the median galaxy redshift. Rest-frame color B-K correlates with M_K_ at the 8{sigma} level for the whole sample but is driven by the strong absorbing, high-redshift subsample (6{sigma}). Using M_K_ as a proxy for stellar mass and examining the luminosity functions, we infer that in lower stellar mass galaxies, MgII absorption is preferentially detected in blue galaxies and the absorption is more likely to be weak.

- We investigate the correlations between galaxy properties and environment. From the main galaxy sample of the SDSS Data Release 5, we have extracted 11 163 groups at the linking length R_0_=0.2x({bar}n)^-1/3^=1.97Mpc (where {bar}n is the mean number density of galaxies) by the three-dimensional friends-of-friends (FOF) algorithm, where {bar}n is the mean galaxy density, and compare basic properties of member galaxies of main galaxy groups with those of the main galaxy sample and isolated galaxies in each redshift bin.

- This paper presents direct evidence for hierarchical galaxy assembly out to redshifts z~3. We identify major mergers using the model-independent CAS (concentration, asymmetry, clumpiness) physical morphological system on galaxies detected, and photometrically selected, in the WFPC2 and NICMOS Hubble Deep Field North. We specifically use the asymmetric distributions of rest-frame optical light measured through the asymmetry parameter (A) to determine the fraction of galaxies undergoing major mergers as a function of redshift (z), stellar mass (M*), and absolute magnitude (M_B_).

- We report on-off pointed MAMBO observations at 1.2mm of 61 Spitzer-selected star-forming galaxies from the Spitzer Wide Area Infrared Extragalactic Legacy survey (SWIRE). The sources are selected on the basis of bright 24um fluxes (F24um>0.4mJy) and of stellar dominated near-infrared spectral energy distributions in order to favor z~2 starburst galaxies. The average 1.2mm flux for the whole sample is 1.5+/-0.2mJy. Our analysis focuses on 29 sources in the Lockman Hole field where the average 1.2mm flux (1.9+/-0.3mJy) is higher than in other fields (1.1+/-0.2mJy). The analysis of the multiwavelength spectral energy distributions indicates that these sources are starburst galaxies with far-infrared luminosities from 10^12^ to 10^13.3^L_{sun}_, and stellar masses of ~0.2-6x10^11^M_{sun}_. Compared to submillimeter selected galaxies (SMGs), the SWIRE-MAMBO sources are among those with the largest 24um/1.2mm flux ratios. The origin of such large ratios is investigated by comparing the average mid-infrared spectra and the stacked far-infrared spectral energy distributions of the SWIRE-MAMBO sources and of SMGs.

- We describe the sample design for the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey and present the final properties of the main samples along with important considerations for using these samples for science. Our target selection criteria were developed while simultaneously optimizing the size distribution of the MaNGA integral field units (IFUs), the IFU allocation strategy, and the target density to produce a survey defined in terms of maximizing signal-to-noise ratio, spatial resolution, and sample size. Our selection strategy makes use of redshift limits that only depend on i-band absolute magnitude (M_i_), or, for a small subset of our sample, M i and color (NUV-i). Such a strategy ensures that all galaxies span the same range in angular size irrespective of luminosity and are therefore covered evenly by the adopted range of IFU sizes. We define three samples: the Primary and Secondary samples are selected to have a flat number density with respect to M_i_ and are targeted to have spectroscopic coverage to 1.5 and 2.5 effective radii (Re), respectively. The Color-Enhanced supplement increases the number of galaxies in the low-density regions of color-magnitude space by extending the redshift limits of the Primary sample in the appropriate color bins. The samples cover the stellar mass range 5x10^8^<=M*<=3x10^11^M_{sun}/h^2^ and are sampled at median physical resolutions of 1.37 and 2.5kpc for the Primary and Secondary samples, respectively. We provide weights that will statistically correct for our luminosity and color-dependent selection function and IFU allocation strategy, thus correcting the observed sample to a volume-limited sample.
