- Identifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs) through their X-ray emission is efficient, but necessarily biased against X-ray-faint objects. We aim to characterize this bias by comparing X-ray-selected AGNs to the ones identified through optical variability and mid-infrared (mid-IR) colours. We present a catalogue of AGNs selected through optical variability using all publicly available z-band Hubble Space Telescope images in the GOODS-South field. For all objects in the catalogue, we compute X-ray upper limits or discuss detections in the deepest available ~7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South images and present the Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) mid-IR colours. For the variability study, we consider only sources observed over at least five epochs and over a time baseline of up to 10yr. We adopt the elevated median absolute deviation as a variability indicator robust against individual outlier measurements and identify 113 variability-selected AGN candidates. Among these, 26 have an X-ray counterpart and lie within the conventional AGN area in the FX/Fopt diagram. The candidates with X-ray upper limits are on average optically fainter, have higher redshifts compared to the X-ray-detected ones and are consistent with low-luminosity AGNs. Out of 41 variable optical sources with IR detections, 13 fulfill the IR AGN colour selection criteria. Our work emphasizes the importance of optical variability surveys for constructing complete samples of AGNs including the ones that remain undetected even by the deepest X-ray and IR surveys.

- We present redshifts and stellar velocity dispersions for about 40 galaxies in each of 14 rich clusters from the southern cluster survey of Abell & Corwin (1983, Early Evolution of the Universe and Its Present Structure, p.179, Eds. Abell & Chincarini, Reidel, Dordrecht, Holland). The clusters cover a wide range of richnesses and Abell and Bautz-Morgan types, our aim being to compile a large, homogeneous database for examining and comparing dynamical phenomena and morphological properties. Further papers will present photometry for the clusters and an analysis of the database.

- This paper presents the results of spectral observations for the largest complete sample of very luminous IRAS galaxies obtained to date. The sample consists of those 73 objects for which log(L_IR_/L_sun_)>=11.5 (H0=50 km/s/Mpc, q0=0.5) and mag<=15.5, and was extracted from the 2Jy IRAS redshift catalog (Cat. <II/174>). All spectra were obtained using 2.16m telescope of Beijing Astronomical Observatory during the years 1994-1996. A total of 123 galaxy spectra were obtained with spectral ranges of 4400A to 7100A and 3500A to 8100A at resolutions of 11.2A and 9.3A respectively. In addition to the 73 spectra for sample galaxies, we also present spectra for ten non-sample galaxies and a further 40 for the companions of sample galaxies. The data presented include nuclear spectrum and the parameters describing the emission lines, absorption lines and continua as well as DSS images and environmental parameters.

- We present a catalogue of 2135 galaxy redshifts from the VLT LBG Redshift Survey (VLRS), a spectroscopic survey of z~3 galaxies in wide fields centred on background quasi-stellar objects. We have used deep optical imaging to select galaxies via the Lyman-break technique. Spectroscopy of the Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) was then made using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) Visible Multi-Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) instrument, giving a mean redshift of z=2.79. We analyse the clustering properties of the VLRS sample and also of the VLRS sample combined with the smaller area Keck-based survey of Steidel et al. (2003, Cat. J/ApJ/592/728).

- We have measured redshifts for 243 z~~3 quasars in nine Very Large Telescope (VLT) Visible Imaging and Multi-Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) redshift survey areas, each of which is centred on a known bright quasar. Using the spectra of these quasars, we measure the cross-correlation between neutral hydrogen gas causing the Ly{alpha} forest and 1020 LBGs at z~~3.

- We present a discovery of definitive large-scale structures around RX J0152.7-1352 at z=0.83 based on spectroscopic redshifts. In our previous papers, we reported a photometric identification of the large-scale structures at z~0.8. A spectroscopic follow-up observation was carried out on eight selected regions covering the most prominent structures to confirm their association to the main cluster. In six out of the eight fields, a well-isolated peak is identified in the distribution of spectroscopic redshifts at or near the cluster redshift. This is strong evidence for the presence of large-scale structures associated to the main cluster at z=0.83.

- We present optical spectra for a sample of 563 high-latitude IRAS sources selected from the Point Source Catalog to have relatively warm 25 to 60 micron colours. We have shown this selection criterion to be an efficient indicator for finding Seyfert galaxies. Plots of the optical spectra are shown and the fluxes of the strongest emission lines in these spectra are tabulated. After excluding 128 sources which are clearly galactic foreground objects, we obtained spectroscopic information for 358 extragalactic objects. Emission-line ratios have been used to classify these objects, resulting in 80 Seyfert 1, 141 Seyfert 2 and 133 HII-type objects. In comparison with samples of active nuclei selected in other ways, about 50% of known Seyfert nuclei are included by our colour criteria. This fraction is larger for high luminosities, reaching 80% for quasar luminosities. For lower-luminosity objects, contamination by the host galaxies becomes important and the sample becomes seriously incomplete. It should be moderately complete and representative for core luminosities greater than 10^23.5^W/Hz at 12m. Finally, the infrared luminosity function for each type of object is derived; the shapes for Seyfert 1 and 2 nuclei are identical, with a type 2/type 1 space-density ratio of 3.0. Our census is consistent with an obscuration scheme for producing both types of object from a single parent population, though the origin of excess cool IR radiation Irom many Seyferts is still unclear. We note the appearance of an apparent type II supernova in IRAS 0225-103 observed in 1985 September. Its spectrum suggests that it was observed between 1 and 2 months after maximum, perhaps in a "plateau" phase.

- The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey is a survey of 240000 emission-line galaxies in the distant Universe, measured with the AAOmega spectrograph on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). The primary aim of the survey is to precisely measure the scale of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) imprinted on the spatial distribution of these galaxies at look-back times of 4-8Gyr. The target galaxies are selected using ultraviolet (UV) photometry from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer satellite, with a flux limit of NUV<22.8mag. We also require that the targets are detected at optical wavelengths, specifically in the range 20.0<r<22.5mag. We use the Lyman break method applied to the UV colours, with additional optical colour limits, to select high-redshift galaxies. The galaxies generally have strong emission lines, permitting reliable redshift measurements in relatively short exposure times on the AAT. The median redshift of the galaxies is z_med_=0.6. The redshift range containing 90 per cent of the galaxies is 0.2<z<1.0. The survey will sample a volume of ~1Gpc^3^ over a projected area on the sky of 1000deg^2^, with an average target density of 350deg^-2^.

- We present an essentially complete, all-sky, X-ray flux-limited sample of 242 Abell clusters of galaxies (six of which are double) compiled from ROSAT All-Sky Survey data. Our sample is uncontaminated in the sense that systems featuring prominent X-ray point sources such as AGN or foreground stars have been removed. The sample is limited to high Galactic latitudes (|b|>=20{deg}), the nominal redshift range of the ACO catalogue of z<=0.2, and X-ray fluxes above 5.0x10^-12^erg/cm^2^/s in the 0.1-2.4keV band. Owing to the X-ray flux limit, our sample consists, at intermediate and high redshifts, exclusively of very X-ray-luminous clusters. Since the latter tend to be also optically rich, the sample is not affected by the optical selection effects and, in particular, not by the volume incompleteness known to be present in the Abell and ACO catalogues for richness class 0 and 1 clusters. Our sample is the largest X-ray flux-limited sample of galaxy clusters compiled to date and will allow investigations of unprecedented statistical quality into the properties and distribution of rich clusters in the local Universe.

- The XMM Cluster Archive Super Survey (X-CLASS) is a serendipitously detected X-ray-selected sample of 845 galaxy clusters based on 2774 XMM archival observations and covering an approximately 90deg^2^ spread across the high-Galactic latitude (|b|>20{deg}) sky. The primary goal of this survey is to produce a well-selected sample of galaxy clusters on which cosmological analyses can be performed. This paper presents the photometric redshift follow-up of a high signal-to-noise ratio subset of 265 of these clusters with declination {delta}<+20{deg} with Gamma-Ray Burst Optical and Near-Infrared Detector (GROND), a 7-channel (grizJHK) simultaneous imager on the MPG 2.2-m telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory. We use a newly developed technique based on the red sequence colour-redshift relation, enhanced with information coming from the X-ray detection to provide photometric redshifts for this sample. We determine photometric redshifts for 232 clusters, finding a median redshift of z=0.39 with an accuracy of {Delta}z=0.02(1+z) when compared to a sample of 76 spectroscopically confirmed clusters. We also compute X-ray luminosities for the entire sample and find a median bolometric luminosity of 7.2x10^43^erg/s and a median temperature of 2.9 keV. We compare our results to those of the XMM-XCS and XMM-XXL surveys, finding good agreement in both samples. The X-CLASS catalogue is available online at http://xmm-lss.in2p3.fr:8080/l4sdb/.
