- We present the results of a comprehensive Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic survey of the ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxy Segue 1. We have obtained velocity measurements for 98.2% of the stars within 67pc (10', or 2.3 half-light radii) of the center of Segue 1 that have colors and magnitudes consistent with membership, down to a magnitude limit of r=21.7. Based on photometric, kinematic, and metallicity information, we identify 71 stars as probable Segue 1 members, including some as far out as 87pc. After correcting for the influence of binary stars using repeated velocity measurements, we determine a velocity dispersion of 3.7^+1.4^_-1.1_km/s. The mass within the half-light radius is 5.8^+8.2^_-3.1_x10^5^M_{sun}_. The stellar kinematics of Segue 1 require very high mass-to-light ratios unless the system is far from dynamical equilibrium, even if the period distribution of unresolved binary stars is skewed toward implausibly short periods. With a total luminosity less than that of a single bright red giant and a V-band mass-to-light ratio of 3400M_{sun}_/L_{sun}_, Segue 1 is the darkest galaxy currently known.

- Strong H{alpha} emitters (HAEs) dominate the z~4 Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) population. We have identified local analogs of these HAEs using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. At z<0.4, only 0.04% of the galaxies are classified as HAEs with H{alpha} equivalent widths (>~500{AA}) comparable to that of z~4 HAEs. Local HAEs have lower stellar mass and lower ultraviolet (UV) luminosity than z~4 HAEs, yet the H{alpha}-to-UV luminosity ratio, as well as their specific star formation rate, is consistent with that of z~4 HAEs, indicating that they are scaled-down versions of high-z star-forming galaxies. Compared to the previously studied local analogs of LBGs selected using rest-frame UV properties, local HAEs show similar UV luminosity surface density, weaker D_n_(4000) break, lower metallicity, and lower stellar mass. This implies that the local HAEs are less evolved galaxies than the traditional Lyman break analogs. In the stacked spectrum, local HAEs show a significant He II{lambda}4686 emission line suggesting a population of hot, massive stars similar to that seen in some Wolf-Rayet galaxies. Low [N II]/[O III] line flux ratios imply that local HAEs are inconsistent with being systems that host bright active galactic nuclei. Instead, it is highly likely that local HAEs are galaxies with an elevated ionization parameter, either due to a high electron density or large escape fraction of hydrogen ionizing photons as in the case of Wolf-Rayet galaxies.

- This paper presents the results of spectral observations for the largest complete sample of very luminous IRAS galaxies obtained to date. The sample consists of those 73 objects for which log(L_IR_/L_sun_)>=11.5 (H0=50 km/s/Mpc, q0=0.5) and mag<=15.5, and was extracted from the 2Jy IRAS redshift catalog (Cat. <II/174>). All spectra were obtained using 2.16m telescope of Beijing Astronomical Observatory during the years 1994-1996. A total of 123 galaxy spectra were obtained with spectral ranges of 4400A to 7100A and 3500A to 8100A at resolutions of 11.2A and 9.3A respectively. In addition to the 73 spectra for sample galaxies, we also present spectra for ten non-sample galaxies and a further 40 for the companions of sample galaxies. The data presented include nuclear spectrum and the parameters describing the emission lines, absorption lines and continua as well as DSS images and environmental parameters.

- We present the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) abundances of up to 10 chemical species in a sample of 59 very metal-poor (VMP, -4<=[Fe/H]<~-2) stars in seven dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) and in the Milky Way (MW) halo. Our results are based on high-resolution spectroscopic datasets and homogeneous and accurate atmospheric parameters determined in Paper I. We show that once the NLTE effects are properly taken into account, all massive galaxies in our sample, that is, the MW halo and the classical dSphs Sculptor, Ursa Minor, Sextans, and Fornax, reveal a similar plateau at [alpha/Fe]=0.3 for each of the alpha-process elements: Mg, Ca, and Ti. We put on a firm ground the evidence for a decline in alpha/Fe with increasing metallicity in the Bootes I ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD), that is most probably due to the ejecta of type Ia supernovae. For Na/Fe, Na/Mg, and Al/Mg, the MW halo and all dSphs reveal indistinguishable trends with metallicity, suggesting that the processes of Na and Al synthesis are identical in all systems, independent of their mass. The dichotomy in the [Sr/Ba] versus [Ba/H] diagram is observed in the classical dSphs, similarly to the MW halo, calling for two different nucleosynthesis channels for Sr. We show that Sr in the massive galaxies is better correlated with Mg than Fe and that its origin is essentially independent of Ba, for most of the [Ba/H] range. Our three UFDs, that is Bootes I, UMa II, and Leo IV, are depleted in Sr and Ba relative to Fe and Mg, with very similar ratios of [Sr/Mg]=-1.3 and [Ba/Mg]=-1 on the entire range of their Mg abundances. The subsolar Sr/Ba ratios of Bootes I and UMa II indicate a common r-process origin of their neutron-capture elements. Sculptor remains the classical dSph, in which the evidence for inhomogeneous mixing in the early evolution stage, at [Fe/H]<-2, is the strongest.

- Only a handful of galaxies in the local Universe appear to be very young. We estimate the fraction of very young galaxies (VYGs), defined as those with more than half their stellar masses formed within the last Gyr. We fit non-parametric star formation histories (SFHs) to ~280000 galaxy spectra from a flux- and volume-limited subsample of the Main Galaxy Sample (MGS) of the SDSS, which is also complete in mass-to-light ratio, thus properly accounting for passive galaxies of a given mass. The VYG fractions decrease with increasing galaxy stellar mass, from ~50 per cent at m=10^8^M_{sun}_ to ~0.1 per cent at m=10^11.5^M_{sun}_, with differences of up to 1dex between the different spectral models used to estimate the SFH and on how we treat aperture effects. But old stellar populations may hide in our VYGs despite our conservative VYG sample built with galaxies that are globally bluer than within the region viewed by the SDSS fibre. The VYG fractions versus mass decrease more gradually compared to the Tweed et al. (2018MNRAS.477.1427T) predictions using analytical and semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, but agree better with the SIMBA hydrodynamical simulation. These discrepancies highlight the usefulness of VYGs in constraining the strong uncertainties in both galaxy formation models and spectral modelling of galaxy SFHs. Given the lognormal cosmic SFH, these mean VYG fractions suggest that galaxies above 10^8^M_{sun}_ undergo at most four major starbursts on average.

- From photometric observations of ~47000 stars and spectroscopy of ~11000 stars, we describe the first extensive study of the stellar population of the famous Double Cluster, h and {chi} Persei, down to subsolar masses. By analyzing optical spectra and optical/infrared photometry, we constrain the distance moduli (dM), reddening (E(B-V)), and ages for h Persei, {chi} Persei, and the low-density halo population surrounding both cluster cores. With the exception of mass and spatial distribution, the clusters are nearly identical in every measurable way. From these data, we establish the first spectroscopic and photometric membership lists of cluster stars down to early/mid M dwarfs. At minimum, there are ~5000 members within 10' of the cluster centers, while the entire h and {chi} Persei region has at least ~13000 and as many as 20000 members. The Double Cluster contains ~8400M_{sun}_ of stars within 10' of the cluster centers. We estimate a total mass of at least 20000M_{sun}_. We conclude our study by outlining outstanding questions regarding the past and present properties of h and {chi} Persei. From comparing recent work, we compile a list of intrinsic colors and derive a new effective temperature scale for O-M dwarfs, giants, and supergiants.

- We investigate the relation between the star formation rate (SFR) surface density ({Sigma}_SFR_) and the mass surface density of gas ({Sigma}_gas_) in NGC 5194 (a.k.a. M51a, Whirlpool Galaxy). Visible Integral field Replicable Unit Spectrograph Prototype (VIRUS-P) integral field spectroscopy of the central 4.1x4.1kpc^2^ of the galaxy is used to measure H{alpha}, H{beta}, [OIII]5007, [NII]6548,6584, and [SII]6717,6731 emission line fluxes for 735 regions ~170pc in diameter. We use the Balmer decrement to calculate nebular dust extinctions, and correct the observed fluxes in order to accurately measure {Sigma}_SFR_ in each region. Archival HI 21cm and CO maps with spatial resolution similar to that of VIRUS-P are used to measure the atomic and molecular gas surface density for each region.

- We present spectroscopic observations of 466 galaxies in and around a superstructure at z~0.84 targeted by the VIMOS Spectroscopic Survey of a Supercluster in the COSMOS eld (VIS3COS). We use [OII]3727, H{delta}, and Dn4000 to trace recent, medium-, and long-term star formation histories and investigate the eect of stellar mass and local environment on them. By studying trends in individual and composite galaxy spectra, we find that stellar mass and environment play a role in the observed galactic properties. Galaxies with low stellar mass (10<log10(M*/M_{sun}_)<10.5) in the eld show the strongest H{delta} absorption. Similarly, the massive population (log10(M*/M_{sun}_) > 11) shows an increase in H absorption strengths in intermediate-density environments (e.g. filaments). Galaxies with intermediate stellar mass (10.5<log10(M*/M_{sun}_)<11) have similar H{delta} absorption proles in all environments, but show an indication of enhanced [OII] emission in intermediate-density environments. This indicates that field galaxies with low stellar mass and lament galaxies with high stellar mass are more likely to have experienced a recent burst of star formation, while galaxies of the intermediate stellar-mass show an increase of star formation at lament-like densities. We also find that the median [OII] equivalent width (|EW[OII]|) decreases from 27+/-2{AA} to 2.0^+0,5^_-0.4_{AA} and Dn4000 increases from 1.09+/-0.01 to 1.56+/-0.03 with increasing stellar mass (from ~10^9.25^ to ~10^11.35^M_{sun}_). For the dependence on the environment, we find that at fixed stellar mass, |EW[OII]| is tentatively lower in environments with higher density. We find for Dn4000 that the increase with stellar mass is sharper in denser environments, which indicates that these environments may accelerate galaxy evolution. Moreover, we find higher Dn4000 values in denser environments at fixed stellar mass, suggesting that galaxies are on average older and/or more metal rich in these dense environments. This set of tracers depicts a scenario where the most massive galaxies have, on average, the lowest specic star formation rates and the oldest stellar populations (age>~1Gyr, showing a mass-downsizing eect). We also hypothesize that the observed increase in star formation (higher EW[OII], higher specic star formation rate) at intermediate densities may lead to quenching because we find that the quenched fraction increases sharply from the lament to cluster-like regions at similar stellar masses.

- Using visible, radio, microwave, and submillimeter data, we study several lines of sight toward stars generally closer than 1kpc on a component-by-component basis. We derive the component structure seen in absorption at visible wavelengths from CaII, CaI, KI, CH, CH+, and CN and compare it to emission from HI, CO and its isotopologues, and C+ from the GOT C+ (Galactic Observations of Terahertz C+) survey (Langer+ 2010A&A...521L..17L). The correspondence between components in emission and absorption helps create a more unified picture of diffuse atomic and molecular gas in the interstellar medium. We also discuss how these tracers are related to the CO-dark H2 gas probed by C+ emission and discuss the kinematic connections among the species observed.

- This is the second paper directed toward finding new highly redshifted atomic and molecular absorption lines at radio frequencies. To this end, we selected a sample of 80 candidates for obscured radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and presented their basic optical/near-infrared (NIR) properties in Yan et al. 2012AJ....144..124Y. In this paper, we present both high-resolution radio continuum images for all of these sources and H I 21 cm absorption spectroscopy for a few selected sources in this sample. A-configuration 4.9 and 8.5 GHz Very Large Array continuum observations find that 52 sources are compact or have substantial compact components with size <0.5" and flux densities >0.1 Jy at 4.9 GHz. The 36 most compact sources were then observed with the Very Long Baseline Array at 1.4 GHz. One definite and 10 candidate Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are newly identified, which is a detection rate of CSOs ~three times higher than the detection rate previously found in purely flux-limited samples. Based on possessing compact components with high flux densities, 60 of these sources are good candidates for absorption-line searches. Twenty-seven sources were observed for H I 21 cm absorption at their photometric or spectroscopic redshifts with only six detections (five definite and one tentative). However, five of these were from a small subset of six CSOs with pure galaxy optical/NIR spectra (i.e., any AGN emission is obscured) and for which accurate spectroscopic redshifts place the redshifted 21 cm line in a radio frequency intereference (RFI)-free spectral "window" (i.e., the percentage of H I 21 cm absorption-line detections could be as high as ~90% in this sample). It is likely that the presence of ubiquitous RFI and the absence of accurate spectroscopic redshifts preclude H I detections in similar sources (only 1 detection out of the remaining 22 sources observed, 13 of which have only photometric redshifts); that is, H I absorption may well be present but is masked by the RFI. Future searches for highly redshifted H I and molecular absorption can easily find more distant CSOs among bright, "blank field" radio sources, but will be severely hampered by an inability to determine accurate spectroscopic redshifts due to their lack of rest-frame UV continuum.
