- We present a source catalog from a deep 26ks Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observation of the Coma cluster in the far-UV (FUV; 1530{AA}) and near-UV (NUV; 2310{AA}) wavebands. The observed field is centered ~0.9{deg} (1.6Mpc) southwest of the Coma core in a well-studied region of the cluster known as "Coma-3". The entire field is located within the apparent virial radius of the Coma cluster, and has optical photometric coverage with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and deep spectroscopic coverage to r~21. We detect GALEX sources to NUV=24.5 and FUV=25.0, which corresponds to a star formation rate of ~10^-3^M_{sun}_/yr for galaxies at the distance of Coma. We have assembled a catalog of 9700 galaxies with GALEX and SDSS photometry, including 242 spectroscopically confirmed Coma member galaxies (in fig. 1) that span a large range of galaxy types from giant spirals and elliptical galaxies to dwarf irregular and early-type galaxies. The full multi-wavelength catalog (cluster plus background galaxies) is ~80% complete to NUV=23 and FUV=23.5. The GALEX images presented here are very deep and include detections of many resolved cluster members superposed on a dense field of unresolved background galaxies.

- We use near ultraviolet and optical photometry to investigate the dust properties in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. By combining imaging from the Swift/UVOT instrument and optical data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we derive the extinction curve parametrized by the standard R_V_ factor, and the strength of the NUV 2175 {AA} feature - quantified by a parameter B - out to projected galactocentric distances of 4 kpc. Our analysis is robust against possible degeneracies from the properties of the underlying stellar populations. Both B and R_V_ correlate with galactocentric distance, revealing a systematic trend of the dust properties. Our results confirm previous findings that dust in M82 is better fitted by a Milky Way standard extinction curve, in contrast to a Calzetti law. We find a strong correlation between R_V_ and B, towards a stronger NUV bump in regions with higher R_V_, possibly reflecting a distribution with larger dust grain sizes. The data we use were taken before SN2014J, and therefore can be used to probe the properties of the interstellar medium before the event. Our R_V_ values around the position of the supernova are significantly higher than recent measurements post-SN2014J (R_V_~1.4). This result is consistent with a significant change in the dust properties after the supernova event, either from disruption of large grains or from the contribution by an intrinsic circumstellar component. Intrinsic variations among supernovae not accounted for could also give rise to this mismatch.

- We use Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), AKARI, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) data to select local analogs of high-redshift (z~2) dust obscured galaxies (DOGs). We identify 47 local DOGs with S_12{mu}m_/S_0.22{mu}m_>=892 and S_12{mu}m_>20mJy at 0.05<z<0.08 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7. The infrared (IR) luminosities of these DOGs are in the range 3.4x10^10^(L_{sun}_)<~L_IR_<~7.0x10^11^(L_{sun}_) with a median L_IR_ of 2.1x10^11^(L_{sun}_). We compare the physical properties of local DOGs with a control sample of galaxies that have lower S_12{mu}m_/S_0.22{mu}m_ but have similar redshift, IR luminosity, and stellar mass distributions. Both WISE 12{mu}m and GALEX near-ultraviolet (NUV) flux densities of DOGs differ from the control sample of galaxies, but the difference is much larger in the NUV. Among the 47 DOGs, 36%+/-7% have small axis ratios in the optical (i.e., b/a<0.6), larger than the fraction among the control sample (17%+/-3%). There is no obvious sign of interaction for many local DOGs. No local DOGs have companions with comparable optical magnitudes closer than ~50kpc. The large- and small-scale environments of DOGs are similar to the control sample. Many physical properties of local DOGs are similar to those of high-z DOGs, even though the IR luminosities of local objects are an order of magnitude lower than for the high-z objects: the presence of two classes (active galactic nuclei- and star formation-dominated) of DOGs, abnormal faintness in the UV rather than extreme brightness in the mid-IR, and diverse optical morphology. These results suggest a common underlying physical origin of local and high-z DOGs. Both seem to represent the high-end tail of the dust obscuration distribution resulting from various physical mechanisms rather than a unique phase of galaxy evolution.

- We address the relation between star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in a sample of 231 nearby (0.0002<z<0.0358) early-type galaxies by carrying out a multi-wavelength study using archival observations in the UV, IR, and radio. Our results indicate that early-type galaxies in the current epoch are rarely powerful AGNs, with P<10^22^W/Hz for a majority of the galaxies. Only massive galaxies are capable of hosting powerful radio sources while less massive galaxies are hosts to lower radio power sources. Evidence of ongoing star formation is seen in approximately 7% of the sample. The star formation rate (SFR) of these galaxies is less than 0.1M_{sun}_/yr. They also tend to be radio faint (P<10^22^W/Hz). There is a nearly equal fraction of star-forming galaxies in radio faint (P<10^22^W/Hz) and radio bright galaxies (P>=10^22^W/Hz) suggesting that both star formation and radio mode feedback are constrained to be very low in our sample. We notice that our galaxy sample and the Brightest Cluster Galaxies follow similar trends in radio power versus SFR. This may be produced if both radio power and SFR are related to stellar mass.

- We explore the properties of "peculiar" early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the local Universe that show (faint) morphological signatures of recent interactions such as tidal tails, shells and dust lanes. Standard-depth (~51s exposure) multicolour galaxy images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are combined with the significantly (~2mag) deeper monochromatic images from the public SDSS Stripe82 (-50{deg}<{alpha}<59{deg}, -1.25{deg}<{delta}<1.25{deg}) to extract, through careful visual inspection, a robust sample of nearby (z<0.05), luminous (M_r_<-20.5) ETGs, including a subset of ~70 peculiar systems. ~18% of ETGs exhibit signs of disturbed morphologies (e.g. shells), while ~7% show evidence of dust lanes and patches. An analysis of optical emission-line ratios indicates that the fraction of peculiar ETGs that are Seyferts or LINERs (19.4%) is twice the corresponding values in their relaxed counterparts (10.1%). LINER-like emission is the dominant type of nebular activity in all ETG classes, plausibly driven by stellar photoionization associated with recent star formation. An analysis of ultraviolet-optical colours indicates that, regardless of the luminosity range being considered, the fraction of peculiar ETGs that have experienced star formation in the last Gyr is a factor of ~1.5 higher than that in their relaxed counterparts. The spectrophotometric results strongly suggest that the interactions that produce the morphological peculiarities also induce low-level recent star formation which, based on the recent literature, are likely to contribute a few per cent of the stellar mass over the last ~1Gyr. Peculiar ETGs preferentially inhabit low-density environments (outskirts of clusters, groups or the field), either due to high peculiar velocities in clusters making merging unlikely or because shell systems are disrupted through frequent interactions within a cluster crossing time.

- Using SDSS-DR7 and NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database spectroscopic data, we identify 166 galaxies as members of the Ursa Major cluster with M_r_<-13.5mag. We morphological classify all galaxies by means of carefully inspecting g-, r-, i-band colour and monochromatic images. We show that the Ursa Major cluster is dominated by late-type galaxies, but also contains a significant number of early-type galaxies, particularly in the dwarf regime. We present further evidence for the existence of several subgroups in the cluster, consistent with previous findings. The early-type fraction is found to correlate with the mass of the subgroup. We also investigate environmental effects by comparing the properties of the Ursa Major early-type dwarf galaxies to those of the Virgo cluster. In contrast to the Virgo, the red sequence of the Ursa Major cluster is only sparsely populated in the optical and ultraviolet colour-magnitude relations. It also shows a statistically significant gap between -18<M_r_<-17mag, i.e. the Ursa Major cluster lacks early-type dwarf galaxies at the bright end of their luminosity function. We discover that the majority of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Ursa Major cluster have blue cores with hints of recent or ongoing star formation. We suggest that gravitational tidal interactions can trigger central blue star-forming regions in early-type dwarfs. After that, star formation would only fade completely when the galaxies experience ram-pressure stripping or harassment, both of which are nearly absent in the Ursa Major cluster.

- We have designed the Extremely Luminous Quasar Survey (ELQS) to provide a highly complete census of unobscured UV-bright quasars during the cosmic noon, z=2.8-5.0. Here we report the discovery of 70 new quasars in the ELQS South Galactic Cap (ELQS-S) quasar sample, doubling the number of known extremely luminous quasars in 4237.3deg^2^ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint. These observations conclude the ELQS and we present the properties of the full ELQS quasar catalog, containing 407 quasars over 11838.5deg^2^. Our novel ELQS quasar selection strategy resulted in unprecedented completeness at the bright end and allowed us to discover 109 new quasars in total. This marks an increase of ~36% (109/298) in the known population at these redshifts and magnitudes, while we further are able to retain a selection efficiency of ~80%. On the basis of 166 quasars from the full ELQS quasar catalog, which adhere to the uniform criteria of the Two Micron All Sky Survey point source catalog, we measure the bright-end quasar luminosity function (QLF) and extend it one magnitude brighter than previous studies. Assuming a single power law with exponential density evolution for the functional form of the QLF, we retrieve the best-fit parameters from a maximum likelihood analysis. We find a steep bright-end slope of {beta}~-4.1, and we can constrain the bright-end slope to {beta}<=-3.4 with 99% confidence. The density is well modeled by the exponential redshift evolution, resulting in a moderate decrease with redshift ({gamma}~-0.4).

- We propose a method to substantially increase the flexibility and power of template fitting-based photometric redshifts by transforming a large number of galaxy spectral templates into a corresponding collection of 'fuzzy archetypes' using a suitable set of perturbative priors designed to account for empirical variation in dust attenuation and emission-line strengths. To bypass widely separated degeneracies in parameter space (e.g. the redshift-reddening degeneracy), we train self-organizing maps (SOMs) on large 'model catalogues' generated from Monte Carlo sampling of our fuzzy archetypes to cluster the predicted observables in a topologically smooth fashion. Subsequent sampling over the SOM then allows full reconstruction of the relevant probability distribution functions (PDFs). This combined approach enables the multimodal exploration of known variation among galaxy spectral energy distributions with minimal modelling assumptions. We demonstrate the power of this approach to recover full redshift PDFs using discrete Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling methods combined with SOMs constructed from Large Synoptic Survey Telescope ugrizY and Euclid YJH mock photometry.

- We present the stellar mass-[Fe/H] and mass-[Mg/H] relation of quiescent galaxies in two galaxy clusters at z~0.39 and z~0.54. We derive the age, [Fe/H], and [Mg/Fe] for each individual galaxy using a full-spectrum fitting technique. By comparing with the relations for z~0 Sloan Digital Sky Survey galaxies, we confirm our previous finding that the mass-[Fe/H] relation evolves with redshift. The mass-[Fe/H] relation at higher redshift has lower normalization and possibly steeper slope. However, based on our sample, the mass-[Mg/H] relation does not evolve over the observed redshift range. We use a simple analytic chemical evolution model to constrain the average outflow that these galaxies experience over their lifetime, via the calculation of mass-loading factor. We find that the average mass-loading factor {eta} is a power-law function of galaxy stellar mass, {eta}{prop}M*^-0.21{+/-}0.09^. The measured mass-loading factors are consistent with the results of other observational methods for outflow measurements and with the predictions where outflow is caused by star formation feedback in turbulent disks.

- We have selected a sample of 41 extremely isolated galaxies (EIGs) from the local Universe using both optical and HI Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey redshifts. Narrow-band H{alpha} and wide-band imaging along with public data were used to derive star formation rates (SFRs), star formation histories and morphological classifications for the EIGs. We have found that the extreme isolation of the EIGs does not affect considerably their star formation compared to field galaxies. EIGs are typically 'blue cloud' galaxies that fit the 'main sequence of star-forming galaxies' and may show asymmetric star formation and strong compact star-forming regions. We discovered surprising environmental dependences of the HI content, M_HI_, and of the morphological type of EIGs; the most isolated galaxies (of subsample EIG-1) have lower M_HI_ on average (with 2.5{sigma} confidence) and a higher tendency to be early types (with 0.94 confidence) compared to the less isolated galaxies of subsample EIG-2. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that finds an effect in which an isolated sample shows a higher fraction of early types compared to a less isolated sample. Both early-type and late-type EIGs follow the same colour-to-M_*_, SFR-to-M_*_ (main sequence) and M_HI_-to-M_*_ relations. This indicates that the mechanisms and factors governing star formation, colour and the M_HI_-to-M_*_ relation are similar in early-type and late-type EIGs, and that the morphological type of EIGs is not governed by their M_HI_ content, colour or SFR.
