- We present the Johnson-Cousins B,V and I time series data obtained for 162 variable stars (135 RR Lyrae, 4 candidate Anomalous Cepheids, 11 Classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and 1 delta Scuti star) in two 13x13 square arcmin areas close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometric observations presented in this paper were carried out at the 1.54m Danish telescope located in La Silla, Chile, on the nights 4-7 January 1999, UT, and 23-24 January 2001, UT, respectively. In the paper we give coordinates, finding charts, periods, epochs, amplitudes, and mean quantities (intensity- and magnitude-averaged luminosities) of the variables with full coverage of the light variations, along with a discussion of the pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae stars in the sample.

- We present a catalogue with coordinates and photometric data of 2446 Be star candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on a search of the OGLE II data base. The I-band light curves of these stars show outbursts in 24% of the sample (Type-1 stars), high and low states in 10%, periodic variations in 6% (Type-3 stars), and stochastic variations in 60% of the cases. We report on the result of the statistical study of light curves of Type-1 and Type-3 stars in the LMC, and the comparison with the previously reported results of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) sample.

- We present initial results from a time series BVI survey of two fields in NGC 4258 using the HST ACS. This galaxy was selected because of its accurate maser-based distance, which is anticipated to have a total uncertainty of 3%. The goal of the HST observations is to provide an absolute calibration of the Cepheid distance scale and to measure its dependence on chemical abundance (the so-called metallicity effect). We carried out observations of two fields at different galactocentric distances with a mean abundance difference of 0.5dex. We discovered a total of 281 Cepheids with periods ranging from 4 to 45 days (the duration of our observing window).

- We present the Catalog of Cepheids from the LMC. The Catalog contains 1333 objects detected in the 4.5 square degree area of central parts of the LMC. About 3.4*10^5^ BVI measurements of these stars were collected during the OGLE-II microlensing survey. The Catalog data include period, BVI photometry, astrometry, and R_21_, phi_21_ parameters of the Fourier decomposition of I-band light curve. The vast majority of objects from the Catalog are the classical Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental or first overtone mode. The remaining objects include Population II Cepheids and red giants with pulsation-like light curves. Tests of completeness performed in overlapping parts of adjacent fields indicate that completeness of the Catalog is very high: >96%. Statistics and distributions of basic parameters of Cepheids are also presented. Finally, we show the light curves of three eclipsing systems containing Cepheid detected among objects of the Catalog. - The DIRECT project aims to determine direct distances to two important galaxies in the cosmological distance ladder - M31 and M33 - using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids. We present the results of the first large-scale CCD-based search for variables in M33. We have observed two fields located in the central region of M33 for a total of 95 nights on the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.2 m telescope and 36 nights on the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT 1.3 m telescope. We have found a total of 544 variables, including 251 Cepheids and 47 eclipsing binaries. The catalog of variables is available on-line, along with finding charts and BVI light curve data (consisting of 8.2x10^4^ individual measurements). The complete set of CCD frames is available upon request.

- Cepheids, the principal distance indicators, point to the existence of two inner Galactic spiral arms in the immediate solar neighborhood (within 5kpc). However, the available Cepheids are clearly insufficient for a detailed study of the structure of these arms. Fortunately, southern-sky monitoring (the ASAS project) has led to the discovery of many new variable stars, more than one thousand of which have been identified as possible Cepheids. To improve the classification and to construct reliable light curves for new Cepheids, we have begun their regular photometric observations. Here, we present the first results: 1192 photoelectric BVIc observations were performed for 33 classicalCepheidswith the 76-cm telescope of the South-African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO, the South-African Republic) from December 2006 to January 2008.We provide tables of observations and V light and B-V and V-Ic color curves. The new observations together with ASAS-3 data have been used to improve the elements of the light variations.

- It is not easy to identify and classify low-amplitude variables, but it is important that the classification is done correctly. We use photometry and spectroscopy to classify low-amplitude variables in a 246deg^2^ part of the Akerlof et al. (2000, Cat. J/AJ/119/1901) field. Akerlof and Collaborators found that 38% of the RR Lyrae stars in their 2000deg^2^ test field were RR1 (type c). This suggests that these RR Lyrae stars belong to an Oosterhoff Type II population, while their period distribution is primarily Oosterhoff Type I. Our observations support their RR0 (type ab) classifications; however, six of the seven stars that they classified as RR1 (type c) are eclipsing binaries. Our classifications are supported by spectroscopic metallicities, line-broadening, and Galactic rotation measurements. Our 246deg^2^ field contains 16 RR Lyrae stars that are brighter than m_R_=14.5; only four of these are RR1 (type c). This corresponds to an Oosterhoff Type I population in agreement with the period distribution.

- We present BV CCD photometry for 30 RR Lyrae variables, including 13 newly discovered, in the Oosterhoff type II globular cluster M2. New light curves and ephemerides are presented. Our observations cover magnitudes ranging from the red giant branch tip to ~3mag below the turnoff, allowing us to determine accurate fundamental photometric parameters. With the discovery of new RR Lyrae variables, the mean periods of the RRab and RRc variables are <P_ab_>=0.685+/-0.022days and <P_c_>=0.333+/-0.013days, respectively. The number ratio of the RRc type variables to the total number of RR Lyrae type variables is n(c)/n(ab+c)=0.40. The RR Lyrae pulsational mode transition occurs between the fundamental period of 0.528-days and 0.556-days. From star counts along the horizontal branch (HB), we obtain two HB color distribution indices, (B-R)/(B+V+R)=0.92 and B2/(B+V+R)=0.46. The period-change rates are also derived. The mean period-change rate from six RRab variables is <{beta}>=0.06+/-0.04days/Myr, which agrees well with the predictions of Lee's 1991 model. Our color-magnitude diagram shows a very extended blue HB tail, and there are no significant blue HB gaps in M2.

- We present the results of a variable star search in Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy companion to M31, using Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations. Seventy-three variables were found, one of which is an anomalous Cepheid while the others are RR Lyrae stars. The anomalous Cepheid has properties consistent with those found in other dwarf spheroidal galaxies. For the RR Lyrae stars, the mean periods are 0.571 and 0.363 days for the fundamental mode and first-overtone mode stars, respectively. With this fundamental mode mean period and the mean metallicity determined from the red giant branch (<[Fe/H]>=-1.49), Andromeda II follows the period-metallicity relation defined by the Galactic globular clusters and other dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We also find that the properties of the RR Lyrae stars themselves indicate a mean abundance that is consistent with that determined from the red giants.
