- We apply the GC3 stream-finding method to RR Lyrae stars (RRLSs) in the Catalina survey. We find 2 RRLS stream candidates at >4{sigma} confidence and another 12 at >3.5{sigma} confidence over the Galactocentric distance range 4<D/kpc<26. Of these, only two are associated with known globular clusters (NGC 1261 and Arp2). The remainder are candidate 'orphan' streams, consistent with the idea that globular cluster streams are most visible close to dissolution. Our detections are likely a lower bound on the total number of dissolving globulars in the inner galaxy, since many globulars have few RRLSs, while only the brightest streams are visible over the Galactic RRLS background, particularly given the current lack of kinematical information. We make all of our candidate streams publicly available and provide a new galstreamspython library for the footprints of all known streams and overdensities in the Milky Way.

- The carbon content of protoplanetary disks is an important parameter to characterize planets formed at different disk radii. There is some evidence from far-infrared and submillimeter observations that gas in the outer disk is depleted in carbon, with a corresponding enhancement of carbon-rich ices at the disk midplane. Observations of the carbon content inside of the inner sublimation rim could confirm how much cpc on remains locked in kilometer size bodies in the disk. I aim to determine the density, temperature, and carbon abundance inside the disk dust sublimation rim in a set of T Tauri stars with full protoplanetary disks. Using medium-resolution, near-infrared (0.8 to 2.5um) spectra and the new GAIA DR2 distances, I self-consistently determine the stellar, extinction, veiling, and accretion properties of the 26 stars in my sample. From these values, and non-accreting T Tauri spectral templates, I extract the inner disk excess of the target stars from their observed spectra. Then I identify a series of C0 recombination lines in 18 of these disks and use the CHIANTI atomic line database with an optically thin slab model to constrain the average ne, Te, and nC for these lines in the five disks with a complete set of lines. By comparing these values with other slab models of the inner disk using the Cloudy photoionization code, I also constrain nH and the carbon abundance, XC, and hence the amount of carbon 'missing' from the slab. For one disk, DR Tau, I use relative abundances for the accretion stream from the literature to also determine XSi and XN . The inner disks modeled here are extremely dense (nH~10^16^cm^-3^), warm (Te~4500K), and moderately ionized (logXe~3.3). Three of the five modeled disks show robust carbon depletion up to a factor of 42 relative to the solar value. I discuss multiple ways in which the 'missing' carbon could be locked out of the accreting gas. Given the high-density inner disk gas, evidence for radial drift, and lack of obvious gaps in these three systems, their carbon depletion is most consistent with the 'missing' carbon being sequestered in kilometer size bodies. For DR Tau, nitrogen and silicon are also depleted by factors of 45 and 4, respectively, suggesting that the kilometer size bodies into which the grains are locked were formed beyond the N_2_ snowline. I explore briefly what improvements in the models and observations are needed to better address this topic in the future.

- Dust radiative transfer models are presented for 60 carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) for which 535m Spitzer infrared spectrograph (IRS) spectra and quasi-simultaneous ground-based JHKL photometry are available. From the modelling, the luminosity and mass-loss rate are derived (under the assumption of a fixed expansion velocity and dust-to-gas ratio), and the ratio of silicon carbide (SiC) to amorphous carbon (AMC) dust is also derived. This ratio is smaller than observed in Galactic carbon stars, as has been noted before. Light curves for 36 objects can be retrieved from the massive compact halo object (MACHO) and optical gravitational lensing experiment (OGLE) data bases, and periods can be derived for all but two of these. Including data from the literature, periods are available for 53 stars.

- We present new multiband (UBVI) time-series data of helium burning variables in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The current sample includes 92 RR Lyrae --six of them are new identifications-- and 20 Anomalous Cepheids, one of which is new identification. The analysis of the Bailey diagram shows that the luminosity amplitude of the first overtone component in double-mode variables is located along the long-period tail of regular first overtone variables, while the fundamental component is located along the short-period tail of regular fundamental variables. This evidence further supports the transitional nature of these objects. Moreover, the distribution of Carina double-mode variables in the Petersen diagram (P_1_/P_0_ versus P_0_) is similar to metal-poor globulars (M15, M68), to the dwarf spheroidal Draco, and to the Galactic Halo. This suggests that the Carina old stellar population is metal-poor and affected by a small spread in metallicity. We use trigonometric parallaxes for five field RR Lyrae stars to provide an independent estimate of the Carina distance using the observed reddening free Period-Wesenheit [PW,(BV)] relation. Theory and observations indicate that this diagnostic is independent of metallicity. We found a true distance modulus of {mu}=20.01+/-0.02 (standard error of the mean)+/-0.05 (standard deviation) mag. We also provided independent estimates of the Carina true distance modulus using four predicted PW relations (BV, BI, VI, BVI) and we found: {mu}=(20.08+/-0.007+/-0.07)mag, {mu}=(20.06+/-0.006+/-0.06)mag, {mu}=(20.07+/-0.008+/-0.08)mag, and {mu}=(20.06+/-0.006+/-0.06)mag. Finally, we identified more than 100 new SX Phoenicis stars that together with those already known in the literature (340) make Carina a fundamental laboratory for constraining the evolutionary and pulsation properties of these transitional variables.

- We present photometry of 30 Galactic RR Lyrae variables taken with HST WFC3/IR for the Carnegie-Chicago Hubble Program. These measurements form the base of the distance-ladder measurements that comprise a pure Population II base to a measurement of Ho at an accuracy of 3%. These data are taken with the same instrument and filter (F160W) as our observations of RR Lyrae stars in external galaxies so as to minimize sources of systematic error in our calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. We calculate mean magnitudes based on one to three measurements for each RR Lyrae star using star-by-star templates generated from densely time-sampled data at optical and midinfrared wavelengths. We use four RR Lyrae stars from our sample with well-measured HST parallaxes to determine a zero-point. This zero-point will soon be improved with the large number of precise parallaxes to be provided by Gaia. We also provide preliminary calibration with the TGAS and Gaia DR2 data, and all three zero points are in agreement, to within their uncertainties.

- The second data release of the Gaia mission (DR2) includes an advance catalogue of variable stars. The classifications of these stars are based on sparse photometry from the first 22 months of the mission. We set out to investigate the purity and completeness of the all-sky Gaia classification results with the help of the continuous light curves of the observed targets from the Kepler and K2 missions, focusing specifically on RR Lyrae and Cepheid pulsators, outside the Galactic bulge region. We cross-matched the Gaia identifications with the observations collected by the Kepler space telescope. We inspected the light curves visually, then calculated the relative Fourier coefficients and period ratios for the single- and double-mode K2 RR Lyrae stars to further classify them. We identified 1443 and 41 stars classified as RR Lyrae or Cepheid variables in Gaia DR2 in the targeted observations of the two missions and 263 more RR Lyre targets in the full-frame images (FFI) of the original mission. We provide the cross-match of these sources. We conclude that the RR Lyrae catalogue has a completeness between 70-78%, and provide a purity estimate of between 92-98% (targeted observations) with lower limits of 75% (FFI stars) and 51% (K2 worst-case scenario). The low number of Cepheids prevents us from drawing detailed conclusions, but the purity of the DR2 sample is estimated to be about 66%.

- Big data in the form of stellar spectra from the spectroscopic survey associated with the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) are important for studying properties of cataclysmic variables (CVs). By cross matching the catalogs of CVs compiled with LAMOST DR3, acquired from October 2011 to July 2015, we obtained the first spectroscopic catalog for CVs observed by LAMOST with high signal to noise ratio, above 8. By integrating line profiles, their equivalent widths (EWs) of the H{alpha}, H{beta}, H{gamma} and H{delta}, as well as HeI 5876 and 6678{AA} lines, were calculated. There were 74 stellar spectra from 48 known CVs and three spectra from three new CV candidates. At the same time, we also collected their previously published EWs. Thirty-three objects had repeated spectra and 30 stars showed spectral variability in the H{alpha} line. Moreover, we carried out photometric follow-up studies for five CVs (UU Aqr, TT Tri, PX And, BP Lyn and RW Tri). We obtained nine new light curves and revised their linear ephemerides. For RW Tri, there is a possible oscillation with an amplitude of 0.0031(2) days and a period of 47.6+/-0.4 years, which might be caused by a third body (brown dwarf) or magnetic activity cycle.

- Cataclysmic variables (CVs) have "traditionally" been observed primarily at short wavelengths because accretion-generated luminosity, which peaks in the optical-ultraviolet, dominates the radiated energy of most systems. Hence, relatively little is known about their infrared (IR) properties. Investigating CVs in the IR will contribute to the understanding of key system components that are expected to radiate at these wavelengths, such as the cool outer disk, accretion stream, and secondary star. We have compiled the near-IR J, H, and Ks band photometry of all cataclysmic variables contained in the sky coverage of the Second Incremental Data Release of the 2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). This data comprises 251 cataclysmic variables with reliably identified near-IR counterparts and S/N>10 photometry in one or more of the three near-IR bands. In addition to tables containing the 2MASS data, we present a set of near-IR finding charts for selected systems.

- Using selection criteria based on amplitude, time, and color, we have identified 329 objects as known or candidate cataclysmic variables (CVs) during the first year of testing and operation of the Zwicky Transient Facility. Of these, 90 are previously confirmed CVs, 218 are strong candidates based on the shape and color of their light curves obtained during 3-562days of observation, and the remaining 21 are possible CVs but with too few data points to be listed as good candidates. Almost half of the strong candidates are within 10{deg} of the galactic plane, in contrast to most other large surveys that have avoided crowded fields. The available Gaia parallaxes are consistent with sampling the low mass transfer CVs, as predicted by population models. Our follow-up spectra have confirmed Balmer/helium emission lines in 27 objects, with four showing high-excitation HeII emission, including candidates for an AM CVn, a polar, and an intermediate polar. Our results demonstrate that a complete survey of the Galactic plane is needed to accomplish an accurate determination of the number of CVs existing in the Milky Way.

- Using a filter in the GROWTH Marshal based on color and the amplitude and timescale of variability, we have identified 372 objects as known or candidate cataclysmic variables (CVs) during the second year of the operation of the Zwicky Transient Facility. From the available difference imaging data, we found that 93 are previously confirmed CVs and 279 are strong candidates. Spectra of four of the candidates confirm them as CVs by the presence of Balmer emission lines, while one of the four has prominent HeII lines indicative of containing a magnetic white dwarf. Gaia EDR3 parallaxes are available for 154 of these systems, resulting in distances from 108-2096pc and absolute magnitudes in the range of 7.5-15.0, with the largest number of candidates between 10.5 and 12.5. The total numbers are 21% higher than from the previous year of the survey with a greater number of distances available but a smaller percentage of systems close to the Galactic plane. Comparison of these findings with a machine-learning method of searching all the light curves reveals large differences in each data set related to the parameters involved in the search process.
