- As part of an extensive program focused on the global properties and evolution of active stars, high-precision UBV(RI)c and UBV photometry of 18 selected stars is presented. UBV(RI)c observations were collected at the European Southern Observatory over the intervals 21-28 September 1994 and 25 November - 05 December 1994. Additional UBV photometry obtained late in 1994 by Catania Astrophysical Observatory Automatic Photoelectric Telescope is also presented. Significant evolution of the light curves, period variations and evidence for long-term variability of the global degree of spottedness are found. Some spectral classifications are revised and photometric parallaxes are compared, whenever possible, with the values measured by the Hipparcos satellite. These observations are finalized to the construction of an extended photometric database, which can give important clues on topics such as the stability of spotted areas, differential stellar rotation, solar-like activity cycles and the correlation between inhomogeneities at different atmospheric levels.

- The Asiago photographic archive has been searched for plates containing the symbiotic stars Hen 2-468, QW Sge, LT Del, V407 Cyg, K 3-9, V335 Vul, FG Ser and Draco C-1. A total of 635 plates imaging the program stars have been found and the brightness estimated using the Henden & Munari (2000A&AS..143..343H) UBV(RI) photometric sequences. These historical data have allowed for the first time the determination of the orbital periods of Hen 2-468 (774 days) and QW Sge (390.5 days), a significant improvement in the orbital period of LT Del (465.6 days) and for V407 Cyg an evaluation of the Mira's pulsation period and complex lightcurve shape in the red (R and I bands). Some previously unknown outbursts have been discovered too.

- We present optical and near-infrared UBVRIJHK photometry of stars in the Galactic globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121) based upon a large corpus of observations obtained mainly from public astronomical archives. We concentrate on the RR Lyrae variable stars in the cluster, and make a particular effort to accurately reidentify the previously discovered variables. We have also discovered two new probable RR Lyrae variables in the M4 field: one of them by its position on the sky and its photometric properties is a probable member of the cluster, and the second is a probable background (bulge?) object. We provide accurate equatorial coordinates for all 47 stars identified as RR Lyraes, new photometric measurements for 46 of them, and new period estimates for 45. We have also derived accurate positions and mean photometry for 34 more stars previously identified as variable stars of other types, and for an additional five non-RR Lyrae variable stars identified for the first time here. We present optical and near-infrared color-magnitude diagrams for the cluster and show the locations of the variable stars in them. We present the Bailey (period-amplitude) diagrams and the period-frequency histogram for the RR Lyrae stars in M4 and compare them to the corresponding diagrams for M5 (NGC 5904). We conclude that the RR Lyrae populations in the two clusters are quite similar in all the relevant properties that we have considered. The mean periods, pulsation-mode ratios, and Bailey diagrams of these two clusters show support for the recently proposed "Oosterhoff-neutral" classification.

- Photometric variability of chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper main sequence is closely connected to their local stellar magnetic field and their rotational period. Long term investigations, as presented here, help us to identify possible stellar cycles (as in the Sun). Photoelectric Stroemgren uvby time series for 27 CP stars within the boundaries of open clusters are presented. Our observations cover a time period of about six years (1986 to 1992) with typically fifteen measurements for each objects. These observations help us to determine the rotational periods of these objects. We established, for the first time, variability for fourteen CP stars. For additional two stars, a merging of already published data sets, resulted in more precise periods, whereas for six objects, the published periods could be confirmed. Last, but not least, no significant variations were found for five stars. Apart from six stars, all targets seem to be members of their host open clusters.

- Investigation of period-color (PC) and amplitude-color (AC) relations at the maximum and minimum light can be used to probe the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) with the photosphere and the radiation hydrodynamics of the outer envelopes of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. For example, theoretical calculations indicated that such interactions would occur at minimum light for RR Lyrae and result in a flatter PC relation. In the past, the PC and AC relations have been investigated by using either the (V-R)_MACHO_ or (V-I) colors. In this work, we extend previous work to other bands by analyzing the RR Lyraes in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 Region. Multi-epoch data are available for RR Lyraes located within the footprint of the Stripe 82 Region in five (ugriz) bands. We present the PC and AC relations at maximum and minimum light in four colors: (u-g)_0_, (g-r)_0_, (r-i)_0_, and (i-z)_0_, after they are corrected for extinction. We found that the PC and AC relations for this sample of RR Lyraes show a complex nature in the form of flat, linear or quadratic relations. Furthermore, the PC relations at minimum light for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars are separated according to the Oosterhoff type, especially in the (g-r)_0_ and (r-i)_0_ colors. If only considering the results from linear regressions, our results are quantitatively consistent with the theory of HIF-photosphere interaction for both fundamental and first overtone RR Lyraes.

- We present a new catalogue of variable stars compiled from the data taken for the University of New South Wales Extrasolar Planet Search. From 2004 October to 2007 May, 25 target fields were each observed for one to four months, resulting in ~87000 high-precision light curves with 16004400 data points. We have extracted a total of 850 variable light curves, 659 of which do not have a counterpart in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars, the New Suspected Variables catalogue or the All Sky Automated Survey southern variable star catalogue. The catalogue is detailed here, and includes 142 Algol-type eclipsing binaries, 23 beta Lyrae-type eclipsing binaries, 218 contact eclipsing binaries, 53 RR Lyrae stars, 26 Cepheid stars, 13 rotationally variable active stars, 153 uncategorized pulsating stars with periods <10d, including delta Scuti stars, and 222 long period variables with variability on time-scales of >10d.

- We present an updated catalog of 4680 northern eclipsing binaries (EBs) with Algol-type light-curve (LC) morphology (i.e., with well-defined beginnings and ends of primary and secondary eclipses), using data from the Catalina Sky Surveys. Our work includes revised period determinations, phenomenological parameters of the LCs, and system morphology classifications based on machine-learning techniques. While most of the new periods are in excellent agreement with those provided in the original Catalina catalogs, improved values are now available for ~10% of the stars. A total of 3456 EBs were classified as detached and 449 were classified as semi-detached, while 145 could not be classified unambiguously into either subtype. The majority of the SD systems seem to be comprised of short-period Algols. By applying color criteria, we searched for K- and M-type dwarfs in these data, and present a subsample of 609 EB candidates for further investigation. We report 119 EBs (2.5% of the total sample) that show maximum quadrature light variations over long timescales, with periods bracketing the range 4.5-18 years and a fractional luminosity variance range of 0.04-0.13. We discuss possible causes for this, making use of models of variable starspot activity in our interpretation of the results.

- We carried out a Stroemgren photometric survey of thirteen southern bright stars, including {beta} Pictoris itself, during three years, d'Astrophysique de Paris, in order to detect possible weak photometric variations. {beta} Pictoris presents a small long-term variation with a change of brightness by -2.1x10^-3^mag per year, over about two years from beginning of 1996, a situation relatively similar to the one about 18 years ago. Among the other stars, only HD 38392 presents weak photometric variations with a period of 21.4 days, probably related to the star rotation period. The negative result concerning photometric variations of all other stars suggests that those stars are actually really stable and strengthens the reality of the variations discovered in the case of {beta} Pictoris and HD 38392.
