- As they evolve, white dwarfs undergo major changes in surface composition, a phenomenon known as spectral evolution. In particular, some stars enter the cooling sequence with helium atmospheres (type DO) but eventually develop hydrogen atmospheres (type DA), most likely through the upward diffusion of residual hydrogen. Our empirical knowledge of this process remains scarce: the fractions of white dwarfs that are born helium rich and that experience the DO-to-DA transformation are poorly constrained. We tackle this issue by performing a detailed model-atmosphere investigation of 1806 hot (Teff>=30000K) white dwarfs observed spectroscopically by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We first introduce our new generations of model atmospheres and theoretical cooling tracks, both appropriate for hot white dwarfs. We then present our spectroscopic analysis, from which we determine the atmospheric and stellar parameters of our sample objects. We find that ~24% of white dwarfs begin their degenerate life as DO stars, among which ~2/3 later become DA stars. We also infer that the DO-to-DA transition occurs at substantially different temperatures (75000K>Teff>30000K) for different objects, implying a broad range of hydrogen content within the DO population. Furthermore, we identify 127 hybrid white dwarfs, including 31 showing evidence of chemical stratification, and we discuss how these stars fit in our understanding of the spectral evolution. Finally, we uncover significant problems in the spectroscopic mass scale of very hot (Teff>60000K) white dwarfs.

- We present UBV color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) for the globular cluster M4. The CMDs show a sequence of four luminous blue stars (V<20, U-V<-0.6), which appear to be cluster hot subdwarfs. We present spectra for the three brightest ones. We also note the presence of a population of faint blue objects, likely to be hot, young white dwarfs belonging to the cluster. We have selected five objects above V=22mag, bright enough for follow-up ground-based spectroscopy, and present their coordinates and finding charts. We show a spectrum for variable V46, which suggests that it is a hot subdwarf, along with a new light curve obtained with the ISIS image subtraction package. The light curve is unstable, but only one period of variability is apparent. Two new variables have been discovered, both located on the cluster red giant branch. We also present a differential E(B-V) reddening map and a fiducial sequence for the main sequence, subgiant branch, and red giant branch on the V/B-V CMD for a selected region with uniform reddening. Based on a comparison with the M5 fiducial sequence, we obtain a reddening estimate of E(B-V)=0.41mag toward M4, consistent with previous determinations.

- We present the latest catalog of more than 1200 spectroscopically selected close binary systems observed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey through Data Release Five. We use the catalog to search for magnetic white dwarfs in cataclysmic variable progenitor systems. Given that approximately 25% of cataclysmic variables contain a magnetic white dwarf, and that our large sample of close binary systems should contain many progenitors of cataclysmic variables, it is quite surprising that we find only two potential magnetic white dwarfs in this sample.

- Using a machine learning (ML) method, we mine DB white dwarfs (DBWDs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release (DR) 12 and DR14. The ML method consists of two parts: feature extraction and classification. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) is used for the spectral feature extraction by comparing high quality data of a positive sample group with negative sample groups. In both the training and testing sets, the positive sample group is composed of a selection of 300 known DBWDs, while the negative sample groups are obtained from all types of SDSS spectra. In the space of the LASSO detected features, a support vector machine is then employed to build classifiers that are used to separate the DBWDs from the non-DBWDs for each individual type. Depending on the classifiers, the DBWD candidates are selected from the entire SDSS data set. After visual inspection, 2808 spectra (2029 objects) are spectroscopically confirmed. By checking the samples with the literature, there are 58 objects with 60 spectra that are newly identified, including a newly discovered AM CVn. Finally, we measure their effective temperatures (T_eff_), surface gravities (log g), and radial velocities, before compiling them into a catalog.

- We present spectra for 33 previously unclassified white dwarf systems brighter than V=17, primarily in the southern hemisphere. Of these new systems, 26 are DA, 4 are DC, 2 are DZ, and 1 is DQ. We suspect that three of these systems are unresolved double degenerates. We obtained VRI photometry for these 33 objects, as well as for 23 known white dwarf systems without trigonometric parallaxes, also primarily in the southern hemisphere. For the 56 objects, we converted the photometry values to fluxes and fit them to a spectral energy distribution using the spectroscopy to determine which model to use (i.e., pure hydrogen, pure helium, or metal-rich helium), resulting in estimates of Teff and distance.

- We report the discovery of 6576 new spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf and subdwarf stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We obtain Teff, logg and mass for hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf stars (DAs) and helium atmosphere white dwarf stars (DBs), estimate the calcium/helium abundances for the white dwarf stars with metallic lines (DZs) and carbon/helium for carbon-dominated spectra (DQs). We found one central star of a planetary nebula, one ultracompact helium binary (AM CVn), one oxygen line-dominated white dwarf, 15 hot DO/PG1159s, 12 new cataclysmic variables, 36 magnetic white dwarf stars, 54 DQs, 115 helium-dominated white dwarfs, 148 white dwarf + main-sequence star binaries, 236 metal-polluted white dwarfs, 300 continuum spectra DCs, 230 hot subdwarfs, 2936 new hydrogen-dominated white dwarf stars, and 2675 cool hydrogen-dominated subdwarf stars. We calculate the mass distribution of all 5883 DAs with S/N>=15 in DR12, including the ones in DR7 and DR10, with an average S/N=26, corrected to the 3D convection scale, and also the distribution after correcting for the observed volume, using 1/Vmax.

- We present the results of our survey searching for new white dwarf pulsators for observations by the TESS space telescope. We collected photometric time-series data on 14 white dwarf variable candidates at Konkoly Observatory, and found two new bright ZZ Ceti stars, namely EGGR 120 and WD 1310+583. We performed a Fourier analysis of the datasets. In the case of EGGR 120, which was observed on one night only, we found one significant frequency at 1332uHz with 2.3mmag amplitude. We successfully observed WD 1310+583 on eight nights, and determined 17 significant frequencies in the whole dataset. Seven of them seem to be independent pulsation modes between 634 and 2740uHz, and we performed preliminary asteroseismic investigations of the star utilizing six of these periods. We also identified three new light variables on the fields of white dwarf candidates: an eclipsing binary, a candidate delta Scuti/beta Cephei and a candidate W UMa-type star.

- By selecting astrometric and photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS, II/306), the Lepine & Shara Proper Motion North Catalog (LSPM-North, I/298), the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS, II/246), and the USNO-B1.0 (I/284) catalog, we use a succession of methods to isolate white dwarf (WD) candidates for follow-up spectroscopy. Our methods include reduced proper motion diagram cuts, color cuts, and atmospheric model adherence. We present spectroscopy of 26 WDs obtained from the CTIO 4m and APO 3.5m telescopes. Additionally, we confirm 28 WDs with spectra available in the SDSS-DR7 database but unpublished elsewhere, presenting a total of 54 WDs. We label one of these as a recovered WD while the remaining 53 are new discoveries. We determine physical parameters and estimate distances based on atmospheric model analyses. Three new WDs are modeled to lie within 25 pc. Two additional WDs are confirmed to be metal-polluted (DAZ). Follow-up time series photometry confirms another object to be a pulsating ZZ Ceti WD.

- We report the discovery of 9088 new spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs and subdwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10. We obtain T_eff_, logg and mass for hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf stars (DAs) and helium atmosphere white dwarf stars (DBs), and estimate the calcium/helium abundances for the white dwarf stars with metallic lines (DZs) and carbon/helium for carbon-dominated spectra DQs.
