- We present deep CCD photometry in the VI passbands using the WIYN 3.5m telescope of a field located approximately 20 southeast of the center of M33; this field includes the region studied by Mould & Kristian in 1986ApJ...305..591M. The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) extends to I~25 and shows a prominent red giant branch (RGB), along with significant numbers of asymptotic giant branch and young main-sequence stars.

- We present V and I photometry of a 9.4'x9.4' field centered on the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo II. The Tip of the Red Giant Branch is identified at I^TRGB^=17.83+/-0.03 and adopting <[M/H]>=-1.53+/-0.2 from the comparison of RGB stars with Galactic templates, we obtain a distance modulus (m-M)_0=21.84+/-0.13, corresponding to a distance D=233+/-15kpc. Two significant bumps have been detected in the Luminosity Function of the Red Giant Branch. The fainter bump (B1, at V=21.79+/-0.05) is the RGB bump of the dominant stellar population while the brightest one (B2, at V=21.36+/-0.05) may be identified as the Asymptotic Giant Branch Clump of the same population. The luminosity of the main RGB bump (B1) suggest that the majority of RGB stars in Leo II belongs to a population that is >~4Gyr younger than the classical Galactic globular clusters. The stars belonging to the He-burning Red Clump are shown to be significantly more centrally concentrated than RR Lyrae and Blue Horizontal Branch stars, probing the existence of an age/metallicity radial gradient in this remote dwarf spheroidal.

- We present a kinematic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) systems and diffuse stellar light of four intermediate luminosity (sub-L*) early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster based on Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs (GMOS) data. Our galaxy sample is fainter (-23.8<M_K_<-22.7) than most previous studies, nearly doubling the number of galaxies in this magnitude range that now have GC kinematics. The data for the diffuse light extends to 4R_e_, and the data for the GCs reaches 8-12R_e_. We find that the kinematics in these outer regions are all different despite the fact that these four galaxies have similar photometric properties, and are uniformly classified as "fast rotators" from their stellar kinematics within 1R_e_. The GC systems exhibit a wide range of kinematic morphology. The rotation axis and amplitude can change between the inner and outer regions, including a case of counter-rotation. This difference shows the importance of wide-field kinematic studies, and shows that stellar and GC kinematics can change significantly as one moves beyond the inner regions of galaxies. Moreover, the kinematics of the GC systems can differ from that of the stars, suggesting that the formation of the two populations are also distinct.

- We analyze three UV images covering a ~100 square degree field toward the Virgo cluster, obtained by the FAUST space experiment. We detect 191 sources to a signal-to-noise ratio of 4.4 and identify 94% of them. Most sources have optical counterparts in existing catalogs, and about half are identified as galaxies. Some sources with no listed counterpart were observed at the Wise Observatory. We present the results of low-resolution visible spectrophotometry and discuss the foreground 101 stellar sources and the 76 detected galaxies, both in the cluster and in the foreground or background. We derive conclusions on star formation properties of galaxies and on the total UV flux from discrete and diffuse sources in the cluster. We test for the presence of intracluster dust, determine the clustering properties of UV emitting galaxies, and derive the UV luminosity function of Virgo galaxies.

In integral field mode, a 6400-fibre Integral Field Unit (IFU) provides spectroscopy for all objects covering a 54x54arcsec^2^ area.

- We aim at identifying very low-mass isolated planetary-mass member candidates in the nearest OB association to the Sun, Upper Scorpius (145pc; 5-10Myr), to constrain the form and shape of the luminosity function and mass spectrum in this regime. We conducted a deep multi-band (Y=21.2, J=20.5, Z=22.0mag) photometric survey of six square degrees in the central region of Upper Scorpius. We extend the current sequence of astrometric and spectroscopic members by about two magnitudes in Y and one magnitude in J, reaching potentially T-type free-floating members in the association with predicted masses below 5 Jupiter masses, well into the planetary-mass regime. We extracted a sample of 57 candidates in this area and present infrared spectroscopy confirming two of them as young L-type members with characteristic spectral features of 10Myr-old brown dwarfs. Among the 57 candidates, we highlight 10 new candidates fainter than the coolest members previously confirmed spectroscopically. We do not see any obvious sign of decrease in the mass spectrum of the association, suggesting that star processes can form substellar objects with masses down to 4-5 Jupiter masses.

- NGC 188 is a good laboratory for studying the formation and evolution of W UMa type contact binaries due to its rich populations of them. We present a detailed photometric study of three short-period close binaries, EP Cep, ES Cep, and V369 Cep, in the old open cluster NGC 188 based on our two-set photometric observations. We discovered that both EP Cep and ES Cep are shallow-contact binaries with continuously decreasing periods. The difference is in their mass ratios. EP Cep has an extremely low-mass ratio, q=0.15, while ES Cep has a relatively high-mass ratio, q=0.69, indicating that they lie in different evolutionary stages. ES Cep is likely a newly formed contact binary via a Case A mass transfer, while EP Cep is an evolved system and may be on the oscillations caused by the combined effect of the thermal relaxation oscillation and the variable angular momentum loss. For another system, V369 Cep, we found that it is a primary-filling near-contact binary. Both the semidetached configuration and the continuous decrease in the orbital period indicate that it is undergoing a mass transfer from the primary component to the secondary one. This conclusion is in agreement with the excess luminosity seen in the light curves on the ingress of the secondary minimum produced by the impact of the mass transfer. All of the results suggest that V369 Cep is evolving into contact, and a shallow-contact high-mass ratio system similar to ES Cep will be formed. Then, it will evolve into a low-mass ratio contact binary just like EP Cep, and finally merge into a rapidly rotating single star.

- We analyse photometry from deep B-band images of 59 void galaxies in the Void Galaxy Survey (VGS), together with their near-infrared 3.6{mu}m and 4.5{mu}m Spitzer photometry. The VGS galaxies constitute a sample of void galaxies that were selected by a geometric-topological procedure from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 data release, and which populate the deep interior of voids. Our void galaxies span a range of absolute B-magnitude from M_B_=-15.5 to -20, while at the 3.6{mu}m band their magnitudes range from M_3.6_=-18 to -24. Their B-[3.6] colour and structural parameters indicate these are star-forming galaxies. A good reflection of the old stellar population, the near-infrared band photometry also provide a robust estimate of the stellar mass, which for the VGS galaxies we confirm to be smaller than 3x10^10^M_{sun}_. In terms of the structural parameters and morphology, our findings align with other studies in that our VGS galaxy sample consists mostly of small late-type galaxies. Most of them are similar to Sd-Sm galaxies, although a few are irregularly shaped galaxies. The sample even includes two early-type galaxies, one of which is an AGN. Their Sersic indices are nearly all smaller than n=2 in both bands and they also have small half-light radii. In all, we conclude that the principal impact of the void environment on the galaxies populating them mostly concerns their low stellar mass and small size.
