- The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) is an ongoing optical wide-field imaging survey with the OmegaCAM camera at the VLT Survey Telescope. It aims to image 1500 square degrees in four filters (ugri). The core science driver is mapping the large-scale matter distribution in the Universe, using weak lensing shear and photometric redshift measurements. Further science cases include galaxy evolution, Milky Way structure, detection of high-redshift clusters, and finding rare sources such as strong lenses and quasars. Here we present the third public data release (DR3) and several associated data products, adding further area, homogenized photometric calibration, photometric redshifts and weak lensing shear measurements to the first two releases. A dedicated pipeline embedded in the Astro-WISE information system is used for the production of the main release. Modifications with respect to earlier releases are described in detail. Photometric redshifts have been derived using both Bayesian template fitting, and machine-learning techniques. For the weak lensing measurements, optimized procedures based on the THELI data reduction and lensfit shear measurement packages are used. The multi-band catalogue, including homogenized photometry and photometric redshifts, covers the combined DR1, DR2 and DR3 footprint of 440 survey tiles (447deg^2^). Limiting magnitudes are typically 24.3, 25.1, 24.9, 23.8 (5 sigma in a 2 arcsec aperture) in ugri, respectively, and the typical r-band PSF size is less than 0.7 arcsec. The photometric homogenization scheme ensures accurate colors and an absolute calibration stable to ~2% for gri and ~3% in u. Separately released are a weak lensing shear catalogue and photometric redshifts based on two different machine-learning techniques.

- Ultracompact massive galaxies (UCMGs), i.e., galaxies with stellar masses M_*_>8x10^10^M_{sun}_ and effective radii R_e_<1.5kpc, are very rare systems, in particular at low and intermediate redshifts. Their origin as well as their number density across cosmic time are still under scrutiny, especially because of the paucity of spectroscopically confirmed samples. We have started a systematic census of UCMG candidates within the ESO Kilo Degree Survey, together with a large spectroscopic follow-up campaign to build the largest possible sample of confirmed UCMGs. This is the third paper of the series and the second based on the spectroscopic follow-up program. Here, we present photometrical and structural parameters of 33 new candidates at redshifts 0.15<~z<~0.5 and confirm 19 of them as UCMGs, based on their nominal spectroscopically inferred M_*_ and R_e_. This corresponds to a success rate of ~58% , nicely consistent with our previous findings. The addition of these 19 newly confirmed objects allows us to fully assess the systematics on the system selection-and to finally reduce the number density uncertainties. Moreover, putting together the results from our current and past observational campaigns and some literature data, we build the largest sample of ucmgs ever collected, comprising 92 spectroscopically confirmed objects at 0.1<~z<~0.5. This number raises to 116, allowing for a 3{sigma} tolerance on the M_*_ and R_e_ thresholds for the ucmg definition. For all these galaxies, we have estimated the velocity dispersion values at the effective radii, which have been used to derive a preliminary mass-velocity dispersion correlation.

- We present a homogeneous kinematic analysis of red giant branch stars within 18 of the 28 Andromeda dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies, obtained using the Keck I/LRIS and Keck II/DEIMOS spectrographs. Based on their g-i colors (taken with the CFHT/MegaCam imager), physical positions on the sky, and radial velocities, we assign probabilities of dSph membership to each observed star. Using this information, the velocity dispersions, central masses, and central densities of the dark matter halos are calculated for these objects, and compared with the properties of the Milky Way dSph population. We also measure the average metallicity ([Fe/H]) from the co-added spectra of member stars for each M31 dSph and find that they are consistent with the trend of decreasing [Fe/H] with luminosity observed in the Milky Way population. We find that three of our studied M31 dSphs appear as significant outliers in terms of their central velocity dispersion, And XIX, XXI, and XXV, all of which have large half-light radii (>~700pc) and low velocity dispersions ({sigma}_v_<5km/s). In addition, And XXV has a mass-to-light ratio within its half-light radius of just [M/L]_half_=10.3_-6.7_^7.0^, making it consistent with a simple stellar system with no appreciable dark matter component within its 1{sigma} uncertainties. We suggest that the structure of the dark matter halos of these outliers have been significantly altered by tides.

- We investigate individual distances and luminosities of a sample of 889 nearby candidate red supergiants (RSGs) with reliable parallaxes ({omega}/{sigma}_{omega}_>4 and RUWE<2.7) from Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2, Cat. I/345). The sample was extracted from the historical compilation of spectroscopically derived spectral types by Skiff (Cat. B/mk), and consists of K-M stars that are listed with class I at least once. The sample includes well-known RSGs from Humphreys (1978ApJS...38..309H), Elias et al. (1985ApJS...57...91E), Jura & Kleinmann (1990ApJS...73..769J), and Levesque et al. (2005ApJ...628..973L). Infrared and optical measurements from the Two Micron All Sky Survey, Catalog of Infrared Observations (CIO), Midcourse Space Experiment, Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, MIPSGAL, Galactic Legacy Infrared Midplane Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE), and The Naval Observatory Merged Astrometric Dataset catalogs allow us to estimate the stellar bolometric magnitudes. We analyze the stars in the luminosity versus effective temperature plane and confirm that 43 sources are highly probably RSGs with M_bol_< -7.1 mag. Of the stars in the sample, 43% have masses >7 M_{sun}_. Another ~30% of the sample consists of giant stars.

- A survey for ultraviolet-excess objects has been performed for over about 1000sq.deg of the Galactic plane. Photographic blue and ultraviolet plates were obtained to select ultraviolet-excess candidates, and spectroscopic observations were used to determine the nature of those objects. Over 70 white dwarfs and subdwarfs were identified from the survey plates, and these objects were analyzed statistically to determine scale heights and space densities. The sample was complete to B=15.3mag, with the space density of white dwarfs for Mv<12.25 equal to 0.72+/-0.25 per 1000pc^3^, slightly higher than that from the Palomar-Green survey. The average absolute magnitude determined for both the subdwarf O and the subdwarf B stars was considerably fainter than previous determinations, while the scale height for the subdwarfs was lower than earlier suggested values. The space density for the subdwarf O stars is about 7x10^-7^pc^-3^, while the value for the subdwarf B stars is about 2x10^-6^pc^-3, both values considerably higher than previous estimates. The space densities can be used to place evolutionary constraints on these objects.

- We present a catalog of 1143 periodic variables, compiled from our image-subtracted photometric analysis of the K2 Campaign-0 super stamp. This super stamp is centered on the open clusters M35 and NGC2158. Approximately 46% of our periodic variables were previously unreported. Of the catalog variables, we find that 331 are members of M35 and 56 are members of NGC 2158 (P_m_>0.5). Our catalog contains two new transiting exoplanet candidates, both of which orbit field stars. The smaller planet candidate has a radius of 0.35+/-0.04R_J_ and orbits a K dwarf (Kp=15.4mag) with a transit depth of 2.9mmag. The larger planet candidate has a radius of 0.72+/-0.02R_J_ and orbits a late G-type star (Kp=15.7mag) with a transit depth of 2.2mmag. The larger planet candidate may be an unresolved binary or a false alarm. Our catalog includes 44 eclipsing binaries (EBs), including ten new detections. Of the EBs, one is an M35 member and five are NGC 2158 members. Our catalog contains a total of 1097 nontransiting variable stars, including a field {delta} Cepheid exhibiting double mode pulsations, 561 rotational variables, and 251 pulsating variables (primarily {gamma} Doradus and {delta} Scuti types). The periods of our catalog sources range between 43 minutes to 24 days. The known ages of our reported cluster variables will facilitate investigations of a variety of stellar evolutionary processes.

- The tension between the Hipparcos parallax of the Pleiades and other independent distance estimates continues even after the new reduction of the Hipparcos astrometric data and the development of a new geometric distance measurement for the cluster. A short Pleiades distance from the Hipparcos parallax predicts a number of stars in the solar neighborhood that are sub-luminous at a given photospheric abundance. We test this hypothesis using the spectroscopic abundances for a subset of stars in the Hipparcos catalog, which occupy the same region as the Pleiades in the color-magnitude diagram. We derive stellar parameters for 170 nearby G- and K-type field dwarfs in the Hipparcos catalog based on high-resolution spectra obtained using KPNO 4m echelle spectrograph. Our analysis shows that, when the Hipparcos parallaxes are adopted, most of our sample stars follow empirical color-magnitude relations. A small fraction of stars are too faint compared to main-sequence fitting relations by {Delta}M_V_>~0.3mag, but the differences are marginal at a 2{sigma} level, partly due to relatively large parallax errors. On the other hand, we find that the photometric distances of stars showing signatures of youth as determined from lithium absorption line strengths and R'_HK_ chromospheric activity indices are consistent with the Hipparcos parallaxes. Our result is contradictory to a suggestion that the Pleiades distance from main-sequence fitting is significantly altered by stellar activity and/or the young age of its stars, and provides an additional supporting evidence for the long-distance scale of the Pleiades.

- Previous measurements of stellar properties for K2 stars in the Ecliptic Plane Input Catalog (EPIC) largely relied on photometry and proper motion measurements, with some added information from available spectra and parallaxes. Combining Gaia DR2 distances with spectroscopic measurements of effective temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) DR5, we computed updated stellar radii and masses for 26838 K2 stars. For 195250 targets without a LAMOST spectrum, we derived stellar parameters using random forest regression on photometric colors trained on the LAMOST sample. In total, we measured spectral types, effective temperatures, surface gravities, metallicities, radii, and masses for 222088 A, F, G, K, and M-type K2 stars. With these new stellar radii, we performed a simple reanalysis of 299 confirmed and 517 candidate K2 planet radii from Campaigns 1-13, elucidating a distinct planet radius valley around 1.9R_{Earth}_, a feature thus far only conclusively identified with Kepler planets, and tentatively identified with K2 planets. These updated stellar parameters are a crucial step in the process toward computing K2 planet occurrence rates.
