- The Spitzer Space Telescope Legacy Program SAGE-SMC allows global studies of resolved stellar populations in the SMC in a different environment than our Galaxy. Using the SAGE-SMC IRAC (3.6-8.0{mu}m) and MIPS (24 and 70{mu}m) catalogs and images combined with near-infrared (JHK_s_) and optical (UBVI) data, we identified a population of ~1000 intermediate - to high-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) in the SMC (three times more than previously known). Our method of identifying YSO candidates builds on the method developed for the Large Magellanic Cloud by Whitney et al. (2008, J/AJ/136/18) with improvements based on what we learned from our subsequent studies and techniques described in the literature. We perform (1) color-magnitude cuts based on five color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), (2) visual inspection of multi-wavelength images, and (3) spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with YSO models. For each YSO candidate, we use its photometry to calculate a measure of our confidence that the source is not a non-YSO contaminant, but rather a true YSO, based on the source's location in the color-magnitude space with respect to non-YSOs. We use this CMD score and the SED fitting results to define two classes of sources: high-reliability YSO candidates and possible YSO candidates. We found that, due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission, about half of our sources have [3.6]-[4.5] and [4.5]-[5.8] colors not predicted by previous YSO models. The YSO candidates are spatially correlated with gas tracers.

- We present multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of seven southern Fermi-monitored blazars from 2008 to 2013 using the Small and Medium Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS), with supplemental spectroscopy and polarization data from the Steward Observatory. We find that the emission lines are much less variable than the continuum; four of seven blazars had no detectable emission line variability over the 5 yr observation period. This is consistent with photoionization primarily by an accretion disk, allowing us to use the lines as a probe of disk activity. Comparing optical emission line flux with Fermi {gamma}-ray flux and optical polarized flux, we investigate whether relativistic jet variability is related to the accretion flow. In general, we see no such dependence, suggesting that the jet variability is likely caused by internal processes like turbulence or shock acceleration rather than a variable accretion rate. However, three sources showed statistically significant emission line flares in close temporal proximity to very large Fermi {gamma}-ray flares. While we do not have sufficient emission line data to quantitatively assess their correlation with the {gamma}-ray flux, it appears that in some cases the jet might provide additional photoionizing flux to the broad-line region (BLR), which implies that some {gamma}-rays are produced within the BLR, at least for these large flares.

- This SAO catalogue (Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Catalogue of 258,997 stars, 1966; see catalog <I/131>), connected to the CSI (Catalogue of Stellar Identifications, see Ochsenbein et al. 1981), enables researchers to retrieve reliable astrophysical data for about 20,000 stars. This includes SAO identifications, CSI identifications, equatorial coordinates (B1950), Galactic coordinates, proper motions, photometric data, spectral classifications, radial velocity, etc. The SAO/HD cross index for about 188,000 stars allows users to find (or enter) the catalog with the HD number of the star. The notes contain detected errors, the value of the trigonometric parallax taken from the Jenkins' (1952, 1963) catalogues, the double star designation ADS or IDS, and the name of the star.

- We present results of a spectroscopic survey for new K- and M-type members of Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen), the nearest OB Association (~100-200pc). Using an X-ray, proper motion and color-magnitude selected sample, we obtained spectra for 361 stars, for which we report spectral classifications and Li and Ha equivalent widths. We identified 156 new members of Sco-Cen, and recovered 51 previously published members. We have combined these with previously known members to form a sample of 493 solar-mass (~0.7-1.3M_[sun}_) members of Sco-Cen.We investigated the star-formation history of this sample, and re-assessed the ages of the massive main-sequence turn-off and the G-type members in all three subgroups. We performed a census for circumstellar disks in our sample using WISE infrared data and find a protoplanetary disk fraction for K-type stars of 4.4^+1.6^_-0.9_% for Upper Centaurus-Lupus and Lower Centaurus-Crux at ~16Myr and 9.0^+0.4^_-2.2_% for Upper Scorpius at~10Myr.

- SDF (Subaru Deep Field) line-emitting galaxies in four narrow-band filters at low and intermediate redshifts are presented. Broadband colors, follow-up optical spectroscopy, and multiple NB filters are used to distinguish H{alpha}, [OII], and [OIII] emitters at z=0.07-1.47 to construct their LFs. These LFs are derived down to faint magnitudes, allowing for an accurate determination of the faint-end slope. With a large (N~200) sample for each redshift interval, a Schechter profile is fitted to each LF.

- The goal in writing this paper is five fold: (1) to summarize the scientific achievements in the 20th century on S Dor variables (or LBVs); (2) to present an inventory of these variables in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds with a description of their physical state and instability properties; (3) to emphasize the photometric achievements of the various types of instabilities. Generally this seems to be a neglected item resulting in a number of misunderstandings continuously wandering through literature; (4) to investigate the structure of the S Dor-area on the HR-diagram; (5) to estimate the total numbers of S Dor variables in the three stellar systems.

- Consistency between Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP) and SDSS-II Supernova Survey ugri measurements has been evaluated by comparing Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and CSP photometry for nine spectroscopically confirmed Type Ia supernova observed contemporaneously by both programs. The CSP data were transformed into the SDSS photometric system. Sources of systematic uncertainty have been identified, quantified, and shown to be at or below the 0.023mag level in all bands. When all photometry for a given band is combined, we find average magnitude differences of equal to or less than 0.011mag in ugri, with rms scatter ranging from 0.043 to 0.077mag. The u-band agreement is promising, with the caveat that only four of the nine supernovae are well observed in u and these four exhibit an 0.038mag supernova-to-supernova scatter in this filter.

- For an understanding of Galactic stellar populations in the SDSS filter system well defined stellar samples are needed. The nearby stars provide a complete stellar sample representative for the thin disc population. We compare the filter transformations of different authors applied to the main sequence stars from F to K dwarfs to SDSS filter system and discuss the properties of the main sequence. The location of the mean main sequence in colour-magnitude diagrams is very sensitive to systematic differences in the filter transformation. A comparison with fiducial sequences of star clusters observed in g', r', and i' show good agreement. Theoretical isochrones from Padua and from Dartmouth have still some problems, especially in the (r-i) colours.

- We present a spectroscopic analysis of over 38000 low-mass stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5). Analysis of this unprecedentedly large sample confirms the previously detected decrease in the fraction of magnetically active stars (as traced by H{alpha} emission) as a function of vertical distance from the Galactic Plane. The magnitude and slope of this effect varies as a function of spectral type. Using simple 1-D dynamical models, we demonstrate that the drop in activity fraction can be explained by thin disk dynamical heating and a rapid decrease in magnetic activity. The timescale for this rapid activity decrease changes according to the spectral type. By comparing our data to the simulations, we calibrate the age-activity relation at each M dwarf spectral type. We also present evidence for a possible decrease in the metallicity as a function of height above the Galactic Plane. In addition to our activity analysis, we provide line measurements, molecular band indices, colors, radial velocities, 3-D space motions and mean properties as a function of spectral type for the SDSS DR5 low-mass star sample.

- We present a spectroscopic and photometric survey of a sample of field stars in the region of the molecular cloud L1457. High-quality coude feed spectra, together with five-band photometry in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey system and near-infrared archival data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey, are used to derive color excesses and distances for the stars. Based on these data, a new distance estimate of 360+/-30pc is derived for the cloud, supporting recent results by K.L. Luhman, 2001ApJ...560..287L. The data further indicate that the north-south velocity gradient seen in the millimeter-wave CO data is mirrored in a distance gradient, with the northern part of the cloud being closer to us. A second, less opaque, layer of extinction is detected at ~80pc. This distance is consistent with the earlier distance estimates to the cloud, based on Na I absorption. We identify this layer with the wall of the hot Local Bubble. Hence, the dense cloud is not, as previously thought, associated with the Local Bubble.
