- We present the results of the photometric and spectroscopic identification of 110 hard X-ray selected sources from 5 additional XMM-Newton fields, nearly doubling the original HELLAS2XMM sample. Their 2-10keV fluxes cover the range 6x10^-15^-4x10^-13^erg/cm^2^/s and the total area surveyed is 0.5 square degree at the bright flux limit. We spectroscopically identified 59 new sources, bringing the spectroscopic completeness of the full HELLAS2XMM sample to almost 70% over a total area of 1.4 square degree. We found optical counterparts for 214 out of the 232 X-ray sources of the full sample down to R~25. We measured the flux and luminosity of the [OIII]5007 emission line for 59 of these sources.

- Using archival data from the Chandra X-ray telescope, we have measured the spatial extent of the hot interstellar gas in a sample of 49 nearby interacting galaxy pairs, mergers, and merger remnants. For systems with SFR>1 M_{sun}_/yr, the volume and mass of hot gas are strongly and linearly correlated with the star formation rate (SFR). This supports the idea that stellar/supernovae feedback dominates the production of hot gas in these galaxies. We compared the mass of X-ray-emitting hot gas M_X_(gas) with the molecular and atomic hydrogen interstellar gas masses in these galaxies (M_H2_ and M_HI_, respectively), using published carbon monoxide and 21 cm H I measurements. Systems with higher SFRs have larger M_X_(gas)/(M_H2_ + M_HI_) ratios on average, in agreement with recent numerical simulations of star formation and feedback in merging galaxies. The M_X_(gas)/(M_H2_ + M_HI_) ratio also increases with dust temperature on average. The ratio M_X_(gas)/SFR is anticorrelated with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite 60-100 {mu}m flux ratio and with the Spitzer 3.6-24 {mu}m color. These trends may be due to variations in the spatial density of young stars, the stellar age, the ratio of young to old stars, the initial mass function, and/or the efficiency of stellar feedback. Galaxies with low SFR (<1 M_{sun}_/yr) and high K band luminosities may have an excess of hot gas relative to the relation for higher SFR galaxies, while galaxies with low K band luminosities (and therefore low stellar masses) may have a deficiency in hot gas, but our sample is not large enough for strong statistical significance.

- The unification of X-ray and radio selected BL Lacs has been an outstanding problem in the blazar research in the past years. Recent investigations have shown that the gap between the two classes can be filled with intermediate objects and that apparently all differences can be explained by mutual shifts of the peak frequencies of the synchrotron and inverse Compton component of the emission. We study the consequences of this scheme using a new sample of X-ray selected BL Lac objects comprising 104 objects with z<0.9 and a mean redshift of 0.34. 77 BL Lacs, of which the redshift could be determined for 64 (83%) objects, form a complete sample.

- The X-ray luminosity-temperature relation for nearby T ~= 3.5-10 keV clusters is rederived using new ASCA temperatures and ROSAT luminosities. Both quantities are derived by directly excluding the cooling flow regions. This correction results in a greatly reduced scatter in the L_X_-T relation; cooling flow clusters are similar to others outside the small cooling flow regions. For a fit of the form L_bol_ {prop.to} T^{alpha}^, we obtain {alpha} = 2.64 +/- 0.27 (90%) and a residual rms scatter in log L_bol_ of 0.10. The derived relation can be directly compared to theoretical predictions that do not include radiative cooling. It also provides an accurate reference point for future evolution searches and comparison to cooler clusters. The new temperatures and L_X_-T relation together with a newly selected cluster sample are used to update the temperature function at z ~ 0.05. The resulting function is generally higher and flatter than, although within the errors of, the previous estimates by Edge and coworkers and Henry and Arnaud (as rederived by Eke and coworkers). For a qualitative estimate of constraints that the new data place on the density fluctuation spectrum, we apply the Press-Schechter formalism for {Omega}_0_ = 1 and 0.3. For {Omega}_0_ = 1, assuming cluster isothermality, the temperature function implies {sigma}_8_ = 0.55 +/- 0.03, while taking into account the observed cluster temperature profiles, {sigma}_8_ = 0.51 +/- 0.03, consistent with the previously derived range. The dependence of {sigma}_8_ on {Omega}_0_ is different from the earlier results because of our treatment of the slope of the fluctuation spectrum, n, as a free parameter. For the considered values of {Omega}_0_, n = -(2.0-2.3) +/- 0.3, somewhat steeper than that derived from the earlier temperature function data, in agreement with the local slope of the galaxy fluctuation spectrum from the Automatic Plate Measuring Facility (APM) survey, and significantly steeper than the standard cold dark matter prediction.

- We present a catalog of the 26 currently known magnetars and magnetar candidates. We tabulate astrometric and timing data for all catalog sources, as well as their observed radiative properties, particularly the spectral parameters of the quiescent X-ray emission. We show histograms of the spatial and timing properties of the magnetars, comparing them with the known pulsar population, and we investigate and plot possible correlations between their timing, X-ray, and multiwavelength properties. We find the scale height of magnetars to be in the range of 20-31pc, assuming they are exponentially distributed. This range is smaller than that measured for OB stars, providing evidence that magnetars are born from the most massive O stars. From the same fits, we find that the Sun lies ~13-22pc above the Galactic plane, consistent with previous measurements. We confirm previously identified correlations between quiescent X-ray luminosity, L_X_, and magnetic field, B, as well as X-ray spectral power-law indexes, {Gamma} and B, and show evidence for an excluded region in a plot of L_X_ versus {Gamma}. We also present an updated kT versus characteristic age plot, showing that magnetars and high-B radio pulsars are hotter than lower-B neutron stars of similar age. Finally, we observe a striking difference between magnetars detected in the hard X-ray and radio bands; there is a clear correlation between the hard and soft X-ray fluxes, whereas the radio-detected magnetars all have low, soft X-ray flux, suggesting, if anything, that the two bands are anticorrelated.

- We present the Second Palermo Swift-BAT hard X-ray catalogue obtained by analysing data acquired in the first 54 months of the Swift mission. Using our software dedicated to the analysis of data from coded mask telescopes, we analysed the BAT survey data in three energy bands (15-30keV, 15-70keV, 15-150keV), obtaining a list of 1256 detections above a significance threshold of 4.8 standard deviations. The identification of the source counterparts is pursued using two strategies: the analysis of field observations of soft X-ray instruments and cross-correlation of our catalogue with source databases. The survey covers 50% of the sky to a 15-150keV flux limit of 1.0x10^-11^erg/cm2/s and 9.2x10^-12^erg/cm2/s for |b|<10 and |b|>10, respectively. The Second Palermo Swift-BAT hard X-ray catalogue includes 1079 (~86%) hard X-ray sources with an associated counterpart (26 with a double association and 2 with a triple association) and 177 BAT excesses (~14%) that still lack a counterpart. The distribution of the BAT sources among the different object classes consists of ~19% Galactic sources, ~57% extragalactic sources, and ~10% sources with a counterpart at softer energies whose nature has not yet been determined. About half of the BAT associated sources lack a counterpart in the ROSAT catalogues. This suggests that either moderate or strong absorption may be preventing their detection in the ROSAT energy band. The comparison of our BAT catalogue with the Fermi Large Area Telescope First Source Catalogue identifies 59 BAT/Fermi correspondences: 48 blazars, 3 Seyfert galaxies, 1 interacting galaxy, 3 high mass X-ray binaries, and 4 pulsars/supernova remnants. This small number of correspondences indicates that different populations make the sky shine in these two different energy bands.

- We present a catalog of hard X-ray sources detected in the first 105-months of observations with the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) coded-mask imager on board the Swift observatory. The 105-month Swift-BAT survey is a uniform hard X-ray all-sky survey with a sensitivity of 8.40x10^-12^erg/s/cm^2^ over 90% of the sky and 7.24x10^-12^erg/s/cm^2^ over 50% of the sky in the 14-195keV band. The Swift-BAT 105-month catalog provides 1632 (422 new detections) hard X-ray sources in the 14-195 keV band above the 4.8{sigma} significance level. Adding to the previously known hard X-ray sources, 34% (144/422) of the new detections are identified as Seyfert active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby galaxies (z<0.2). The majority of the remaining identified sources are X-ray binaries (7%, 31) and blazars/BL Lac objects (10%, 43). As part of this new edition of the Swift-BAT catalog, we release eight-channel spectra and monthly sampled light curves for each object in the online journal and at the Swift-BAT 105-month website.

The total count is 1002855 optical objects so presented. Each object is displayed with J2000 astrometry, optical and radio/X-ray identifiers, red and blue photometry, and calculated probabilities and optical field solutions of the associations. This is the third and final edition of this method.

- We present the Massive Star-forming Regions (MSFRs) Omnibus X-ray Catalog (MOXC), a compendium of X-ray point sources from Chandra/ACIS observations of a selection of MSFRs across the Galaxy, plus 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud. MOXC consists of 20623 X-ray point sources from 12 MSFRs with distances ranging from 1.7kpc to 50kpc. Additionally, we show the morphology of the unresolved X-ray emission that remains after the cataloged X-ray point sources are excised from the ACIS data, in the context of Spitzer and WISE observations that trace the bubbles, ionization fronts, and photon-dominated regions that characterize MSFRs. In previous work, we have found that this unresolved X-ray emission is dominated by hot plasma from massive star wind shocks. This diffuse X-ray emission is found in every MOXC MSFR, clearly demonstrating that massive star feedback (and the several-million-degree plasmas that it generates) is an integral component of MSFR physics.

- We present the largest sample of type I (thermonuclear) X-ray bursts yet assembled, comprising 7083 bursts from 85 bursting sources. The sample is drawn from observations with Xenon-filled proportional counters on the long-duration satellites RXTE, BeppoSAX, and International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory between 1996 February 8 and 2012 May 3. The burst sources were drawn from a comprehensive catalog of 115 burst sources, assembled from earlier catalogs and the literature. We carried out a consistent analysis for each burst light curve (normalized to the relative instrumental effective area) and provide measurements of rise time, peak intensity, burst timescale, and fluence. For bursts observed with the RXTE/PCA and BeppoSAX/Wide Field Camera we also provide time-resolved spectroscopy, including estimates of bolometric peak flux and fluence, and spectral parameters at the peak of the burst. For 950 bursts observed with the PCA from sources with previously detected burst oscillations, we include an analysis of the high time resolution data, providing information on the detectability and amplitude of the oscillations, as well as where in the burst they are found. We also present analysis of 118,848 observations of the burst sources within the sample time frame. We extracted 3-25keV X-ray spectra from most observations, and (for observations meeting our signal-to-noise criterion) we provide measurements of the flux, spectral colors, and, for selected sources, the position on the color-color diagram, for the best-fit spectral model. We present a description of the sample, a summary of the science investigations completed to date, and suggestions for further studies.
