- We present the results of the Northern extension of the HI Parkes Zone of Avoidance Survey, a blind HI survey utilizing the multibeam receiver on the Parkes 64m telescope. In the two regions studied here, l=36{deg}-52{deg} and l=196{deg}-212{deg}, |b|<=5{deg}, we have detected 77 HI galaxies, 20 of which have been previously detected in HI. The survey has a median rms noise of 6.0mJy/beam and is complete to a mean flux density of 22mJy. We have searched for multiwavelength counterparts to the 77 galaxies detected here: 19, 27, and 11 have a likely optical, 2MASS (Cat. <VII/233>), and IRAS (Cat. <II/125>) cataloged counterpart, respectively.

- We present the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog (BGC), which contains the 1000 HI brightest galaxies in the southern sky as obtained from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS, Cat. <VIII/73>). The selection of the brightest sources is based on their HI peak flux density (S_peak_>~116mJy) as measured from the spatially integrated HIPASS spectrum. The derived HI masses range from ~10^7^ to 4x10^10^M_Sun_. While the BGC (z<0.03) is complete in S_peak_, only a subset of ~500 sources can be considered complete in integrated HI flux density (F_HI_>~25Jy.km/s). The HIPASS BGC contains a total of 158 new redshifts. These belong to 91 new sources for which no optical or infrared counterparts have previously been catalogued, an additional 51 galaxies for which no redshifts were previously known, and 16 galaxies for which the catalogued optical velocities disagree.

- We present the largest catalogue to date of optical counterparts for H i radio-selected galaxies, HOPCAT. Of the 4315 H i radio-detected sources from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) catalogue, we find optical counterparts for 3618 (84 per cent) galaxies. Of these, 1798 (42 per cent) have confirmed optical velocities and 848 (20 per cent) are single matches without confirmed velocities. Some galaxy matches are members of galaxy groups. From these multiple galaxy matches, 714 (16 per cent) have confirmed optical velocities and a further 258 (6 per cent) galaxies are without confirmed velocities. For 481 (11 per cent), multiple galaxies are present but no single optical counterpart can be chosen and 216 (5 per cent) have no obvious optical galaxy present. Most of these "blank fields" are in crowded fields along the Galactic plane or have high extinctions. Isolated "dark galaxy" candidates are investigated using an extinction cut of A_Bj_<1mag and the blank-fields category. Of the 3692 galaxies with an A+Bj_ extinction <1mag, only 13 are also blank fields. Of these, 12 are eliminated either with follow-up Parkes observations or are in crowded fields. The remaining one has a low surface brightness optical counterpart. Hence, no isolated optically dark galaxies have been found within the limits of the HIPASS survey.

- A catalog of southern anomalous-velocity HI clouds at {delta}<+2{deg} is presented. This catalog is based on data from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) reprocessed with the MINMED5 procedure and searched with a new high-velocity cloud-finding algorithm. The improved sensitivity (5{sigma}: {Delta}T_B_=0.04K), resolution (15.5'), and velocity range (-500km/s<V_LSR_<+500km/s) of the HIPASS data result in a substantial increase in the number of individual clouds (1956, as well as 41 galaxies) compared with what was known from earlier southern data. The method of cataloging the anomalous-velocity objects is described, and a catalog of key cloud parameters, including velocity, angular size, peak column density, total flux, position angle, and degree of isolation, is presented.

- Using data from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS), we have searched for neutral hydrogen in galaxies in a region <25x25{deg}^2^ centred on NGC 1399, the nominal centre of the Fornax cluster. Within a velocity search range of 300-3700km/s and to a 3 lower flux limit of ~40mJy, 110 galaxies with HI emission were detected, one of which is previously uncatalogued. None of the detections has early-type morphology. Previously unknown velocities for 14 galaxies have been determined, with a further four velocity measurements being significantly dissimilar to published values. Identification of an optical counterpart is relatively unambiguous for more than ~90 per cent of our HI galaxies. The galaxies appear to be embedded in a sheet at the cluster velocity which extends for more than 30across the search area. At the nominal cluster distance of ~20Mpc, this corresponds to an elongated structure more than 10Mpc in extent. A velocity gradient across the structure is detected, with radial velocities increasing by ~500km/s from south-east to north-west. The clustering of galaxies evident in optical surveys is only weakly suggested in the spatial distribution of our HI detections. Of 62 HI detections within a 10{deg} projected radius of the cluster centre, only two are within the core region (projected radius <1{deg}) and less than 30 per cent are within 3.5{deg}, suggesting a considerable deficit of HI-rich galaxies in the centre of the cluster. However, relative to the field, there is a 3(+/-1)-fold excess of HI-rich galaxies in the outer parts of the cluster where galaxies may be infalling towards the cluster for the first time.

- We present a Radio Recombination Line (RRL) survey of the Galactic plane from the Hi Parkes All-sky Survey and associated Zone of Avoidance survey, which mapped the region l=196{deg}-0{deg}-52{deg} and |b|<=5{deg} at 1.4GHz and 14.4-arcmin resolution. We combine three RRLs, H168{alpha}, H167{alpha}, and H166{alpha} to derive fully sampled maps of the diffuse ionized emission along the inner Galactic plane. The velocity information, at a resolution of 20km/s, allows us to study the spatial distribution of the ionized gas and compare it with that of the molecular gas, as traced by CO. The longitude-velocity diagram shows that the RRL emission is mostly associated with CO gas from the molecular ring and is concentrated within the inner 30{deg} of longitude. A map of the free-free emission in this region of the Galaxy is derived from the line-integrated RRL emission, assuming an electron temperature gradient with Galactocentric radius of 496+/-100K/kpc. Based on the thermal continuum map, we extracted a catalogue of 317 compact (<~15-arcmin) sources, with flux densities, sizes, and velocities. We report the first RRL observations of the southern ionized lobe in the Galactic Centre. The line profiles and velocities suggest that this degree-scale structure is in rotation. We also present new evidence of diffuse ionized gas in the 3-kpc arm. Helium and carbon RRLs are detected in this survey. The He line is mostly observed towards HII regions, whereas the C line is also detected further away from the source of ionization. These data represent the first observations of diffuse C RRLs in the Galactic plane at a frequency of 1.4GHz.

- The comparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning a short (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncover binaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the short time span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission), since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the proper motion. A list of candidate proper motion binaries is constructed from a chi-square test evaluating the statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos proper motions for 103134 stars in common between the two catalogues (excluding components of visual systems). The present paper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency of proper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostly radial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the Ninth Catalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (SB9) is evaluated, as well as for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, and finally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity data in the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood. Proper motion binaries are efficiently detected for systems with parallaxes in excess of 20mas, and periods in the range 1000-30000d. The shortest periods in this range (1000-2000d, i.e., once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission) may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in the Hipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binaries detected among SB9 systems having periods shorter than about 400d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving a component with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triple systems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass (brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 barium stars with parallaxes larger than 5mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence for duplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). Finally, the fraction of proper-motion binaries shows no significant variation among the various (regular) spectral classes, when due account is taken for the detection biases.

- We have developed a parallel code called the VoIgt profile Parameter Estimation Routine (VIPER) for automatically fitting the HI Ly{alpha} forest seen in the spectra of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). We obtained the HI column density distribution function (CDDF) and linewidth (b) parameter distribution for z<0.45 using spectra of 82 QSOs obtained using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and VIPER. The consistency of these with existing measurements in the literature validates our code. By comparing this CDDF with those obtained from hydrodynamical simulations, we constrain the H I photoionization rate ({Gamma}_HI_) at z<0.45 in four redshift bins. VIPER, together with the Code for Ionization and Temperature Evolution (CITE), which we developed for GADGET-2, allows us to explore parameter space and perform {chi}^2^ minimization to obtain {Gamma}_HI_. We notice that the b parameters from the simulations are smaller than those derived from observations. We show that the observed b parameter distribution and b versus logNHI scatter can be reproduced in simulations by introducing subgrid-scale turbulence. However, it has very little influence on the derived {Gamma}_HI_. The {Gamma}_HI_(z) obtained here, (3.9+/-0.1)x10^-14^(1+z)^4.98+/-0.11^s^-1^, is in good agreement with the values derived by us using flux-based statistics in a previous article. These values are consistent with the hydrogen ionizing ultraviolet (UV) background being dominated mainly by QSOs, without needing any contribution from non-standard sources of UV photons.

- Measurement of the Galactic neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) column density, NHI, and brightness temperatures, Tb, is of high scientific value for a broad range of astrophysical disciplines. In the past two decades, one of the most-used legacy HI datasets has been the Leiden/Argentine/Bonn Survey (LAB). We release the HI 4-pi survey (HI4PI), an all-sky database of Galactic HI, which supersedes the LAB survey. The HI4PI survey is based on data from the recently completed first coverage of the Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey (EBHIS) and from the third revision of the Galactic All-Sky Survey (GASS). EBHIS and GASS share similar angular resolution and match well in sensitivity. Combining both, they are ideally suited to be a successor to LAB. The new HI4PI survey outperforms the LAB in angular resolution (16.1', FWHM) and sensitivity (43mK RMS). Moreover, it has full spatial sampling and thus overcomes a major issue of LAB, which severely undersamples the sky. We publish all-sky column density maps of the neutral atomic hydrogen in the Milky Way, along with full spectroscopic data, in several map projections including HEALPix.

- We present improved Hipparcos astrometry for 257 Hipparcos stars, resolved into 342 components. For 64 of the stars no astrometry was obtained in the Hipparcos Catalogue, while for the remaining stars additional components have been added by this solution or the positions have been revised considerably. We have used the published Hipparcos transit data for the new solutions, together with results from the second reduction of the Tycho data for defining better initial values.
