- By means of numerical experiments we explore the application of interferometry to the detection and characterization of abundance spots in chemically peculiar (CP) stars using the brightest star {epsilon} UMa as a case study. We find that the best spectral regions to search for spots and stellar rotation signatures are in the visual domain. The spots can clearly be detected already at a first visibility lobe and their signatures can be uniquely disentangled from that of rotation. The spots and rotation signatures can also be detected in near-infrared at low spectral resolution but baselines longer than 180m are needed for all potential CP candidates. According to our simulations, an instrument like VEGA (or its successor e.g. Fibered and spectrally Resolved Interferometric Equipment New Design) should be able to detect, in the visual, the effect of spots and spots+rotation, provided that the instrument is able to measure V_2_~10^-3^, and/or closure phase. In infrared, an instrument like AMBER but with longer baselines than the ones available so far would be able to measure rotation and spots. Our study provides necessary details about strategies of spot detections and the requirements for modern and planned interferometric facilities essential for CP star research.

- We measure the effective opacity ({tau}_eff_) of the intergalactic medium from the composite spectra of 281 Lyman-break galaxies in the redshift range 2<~z<~3. Our spectra are taken from the COSMOS Ly{alpha} Mapping And Tomographic Observations survey derived from the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on the W.M. Keck I telescope. We generate composite spectra in two redshift intervals and fit them with spectral energy distribution (SED) models composed of simple stellar populations. Extrapolating these SED models into the Ly{alpha} forest, we measure the effective Ly{alpha} opacity ({tau}_eff_) in the 2.02<~z<~2.44 range. At z=2.22, we estimate {tau}_eff_=0.159{+/-}0.001 from a power-law fit to the data. These measurements are consistent with estimates from quasar analyses at z<2.5 indicating that the systematic errors associated with normalizing quasar continua are not substantial. We provide a Gaussian processes model of our results and previous {tau}_eff_ measurements that describes the steep redshift evolution in {tau}_eff_ from z=1.5-4.

- We report on a systematic investigation of the H{beta} and FeII emission lines in a sample of 568 quasars within z<0.8 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalog (DR5, Cat. VII/252). The conventional broad H{beta} emission line can be decomposed into two components: one with intermediate velocity width and another with very broad width. The velocity shift and equivalent width of the intermediate-width component do not correlate with those of the very broad component of H{beta}, but its velocity shift and width do resemble FeII. Moreover, the width of the very broad component is roughly 2.5 times that of the intermediate-width component. These characteristics strongly suggest the existence of an intermediate-line region, whose kinematics seem to be dominated by infall, located at the outer portion of the broad-line region.

- ROSAT, and now Chandra, X-ray images allow studies of extranuclear X-ray point sources in galaxies other than our own. X-ray observations of normal galaxies with ROSAT and Chandra have revealed that off-nuclear, compact, intermediate-luminosity (L_X_[2-10keV]>=10^39^erg/s) X-ray objects (IXOs, a.k.a. ULXs [ultraluminous X-ray sources]) are quite common. Here we present a catalog and finding charts for 87 IXOs in 54 galaxies, derived from all of the ROSAT HRI imaging data for galaxies with cz<=5000km/s from the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies.

- In an effort to understand the factors that govern the transition from low- to high-mass star formation, for the first time we identify a sample of intermediate-mass star-forming regions (IM SFRs) where stars up to (but not exceeding) ~8M_{sun}_ are being produced. We use IRAS colors and Spitzer Space Telescope mid-IR images, in conjunction with millimeter continuum and ^13^CO maps, to compile a sample of 50 IM SFRs in the inner Galaxy. These are likely to be precursors to Herbig AeBe stars and their associated clusters of low-mass stars.

- We report the results of a study of the intermediate- and high-mass stars in the young, rich star-forming complex IC 1805, based on a combination of optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared photometry, and classification spectra. These data provide the basis for characterizing the masses and ages for stars more massive than ~2M_{sun}_ and enable a study of the frequency and character of circumstellar disks associated with intermediate- and high-mass stars. Optically thick accretion disks among stars with masses 2<M/M_{sun}_<4 are rare (~2% of members) and absent among more massive stars. A larger fraction (~10%) of stars with masses 2<M/M_{sun}_<4 appear to be surrounded by disks that have evolved from the initial optically thick accretion phase. We identify four classes of such disks. These classes are based on spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of excess emission above photospheric levels: disks that are (1) optically thin based on the magnitude of the observed excess emission from 2 to 24um, (2) optically thin in their inner regions (r<20AU) and optically thick in their outer regions, (3) exhibit empty inner regions (r<10AU) and optically thin emission in their outer regions, and (4) exhibit empty inner regions and optically thick outer regions. We discuss, and assess the merits and liabilities of, proposed explanations for disks exhibiting these SED types and suggest additional observations that would test these proposals.

- The origin of the fossil magnetic fields detected in 5 to 10% of intermediate-mass main sequence stars is still highly debated. We want to bring observational constraints to a large population of intermediate-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in order to test the theory that convective-dynamo fields generated during the PMS phases of stellar evolution can occasionally relax into fossil fields on the main sequence. Using distance estimations, photometric measurements, and spectropolarimetric data from HARPSpol and ESPaDOnS of 38 intermediate-mass PMS stars, we determined fundamental stellar parameters (T_eff_, L and vsini) and measured surface magnetic field characteristics (including detection limits for non-detections, and longitudinal fields and basic topologies for positive detections). Using PMS evolutionary models, we determined the mass, radius, and internal structure of these stars. We compared different PMS models to check that our determinations were not model- dependant. We then compared the magnetic characteristics of our sample accounting for their stellar parameters and internal structures. Results: We detect magnetic fields in about half of our sample. About 90% of the magnetic stars have outer convective envelopes larger than ~25% of the stellar radii, and heavier than ~2% of the stellar mass. Going to higher mass, we find that the magnetic incidence in intermediate-mass stars drops very quickly, within a time-scale of the order of few times 0.1Myr. Finally, we propose that intermediate-mass T Tauri stars with large convective envelopes, close to the fully convective limit, have complex fields and that their dipole component strengths may decrease as the sizes of their convective envelopes decrease, similar to lower-mass T Tauri stars.

- Combining resolved optical spectroscopy with panoramic HST imaging, we study the dynamical properties of spiral galaxies as a function of position across two intermediate-redshift clusters, and we compare the cluster population to field galaxies in the same redshift range. By modeling the observed rotation curves, we derive maximal rotation velocities for 40 cluster spirals and 37 field spirals, yielding one of the largest matched samples of cluster and field spirals at intermediate redshift. We construct the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation in both V and Ks bands, and find that the cluster Tully-Fisher relation exhibits significantly higher scatter than the field relation, in both V and Ks bands.

- We present observations of intermediate-velocity clouds (IVCs) found at positive velocities in the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey Phase I region (74{deg}<l<148{deg},-3.5{deg}<b<+5.6{deg}). A catalog of 138 distinct IVCs and 13 IVC complexes has been compiled.
