- Using new and archival observations made with the Swift satellite and other facilities, we examine 147 X-ray sources selected from the ROSAT All-Sky-Survey Bright Source Catalog (RASS/BSC) to produce a new limit on the number of isolated neutron stars (INSs) in the RASS/BSC, the most constraining such limit to date. Independent of X-ray spectrum and variability, the number of INSs is <=48 (90% confidence). Restricting attention to soft (kT_eff_<200eV), non-variable X-ray sources -as in a previous study- yields an all-sky limit of <=31 INSs. In the course of our analysis, we identify five new high-quality INS candidates for targeted follow-up observations. A future all-sky X-ray survey with eROSITA, or another mission with similar capabilities, can be expected to increase the detected population of X-ray-discovered INSs from the 8-50 in the BSC, to (for a disk population) 240-1500, which will enable a more detailed study of neutron star population models.

- Constraining the temperature and density structure of dense molecular cloud cores is fundamental for understanding the initial conditions of star formation. We use Herschel observations of the thermal FIR dust emission from nearby isolated molecular cloud cores and combine them with ground-based submillimeter continuum data to derive observational constraints on their temperature and density structure. The aim of this study is to verify the validity of a ray-tracing inversion technique developed to derive the dust temperature and density structure of isolated starless cores directly from the dust emission maps and to test if the resulting temperature and density profiles are consistent with physical models. Using this ray-tracing inversion technique, we derive the dust temperature and density structure of six isolated starless cloud cores. We employ self-consistent radiative transfer modeling to the derived density profiles, treating the ISRF as the only heating source. The best-fit values of local strength of the ISRF and the extinction by the outer envelope are derived by comparing the self-consistently calculated temperature profiles with those derived by the ray-tracing method. We find that all starless cores are significantly colder inside than outside, with the core temperatures showing a strong negative correlation with peak column density. This suggests that their thermal structure is dominated by external heating from the ISRF and shielding by dusty envelopes. The temperature profiles derived with the ray-tracing inversion method can be well-reproduced with self-consistent radiative transfer models.

- This article presents the study of the light curves extracted from the MACHO database of a sample of stars observed by the Infrared Space Observatory in the Small Magellanic Cloud. These stars belong to the ISO Mini-Survey catalogue of the Magellanic Clouds (ISO MCMS, Loup et al., in preparation). Most of them are in the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and supergiant phases. The dominant period and amplitude of pulsation have been derived and the stars have been classified as Mira or Semi Regular pulsators.

- The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) is an ESA (European Space Agency) project with instruments funded by ESA member states (especially the PI countries France, Germany, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom) and with participation of ISAS (Japan) and NASA (USA). It was operated from November 1995 till May 1998, almost a year longer than expected. As an unprecedented observatory for infrared astronomy, able to examine cool and hidden places in the Universe, ISO successfully made nearly 30,000 scientific observations. The ISO Data Archive is available at the ISO Data Centre at https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/iso it includes about 150,000 observations, if account is taken of calibration and parallel or serendipity mode observations. - The Canada-France Redshift Survey 1452+52 field has been deeply imaged with the Infrared Space Observatory using ISOCAM through the LW3 filter (1218 {mu}m). Careful data analysis and comparison with deep optical and radio data have allowed us to generate a catalog of 78 15 {mu}m sources with both radio and optical identifications. They are redder and lie at higher redshift than I-band-selected galaxies, with most of them being star-forming galaxies. We have considered the galaxies detected at radio and 15 {mu}m wavelengths, which potentially include all strong and heavily extincted starbursts, up to z=1. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for each of the sources have been derived using deep radio, mid-IR, near-IR, optical, and UV photometry. The sources were then spectrally classified by comparing with SEDs of well-known nearby galaxies. By deriving their far-IR luminosities by interpolation, we can estimate their star formation rate (SFR) in a way that does not depend sensitively on the extinction.

- We report on a study of the isophotal shapes of early-type galaxies to very faint levels, reaching ~0.1% of the sky brightness. The galaxies are from the Large Format Camera (LFC) fields obtained using the Palomar 5 m Hale Telescope, with integrated exposures ranging from 1 to 4 hr in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey r, i, and z bands. The shapes of isophotes of early-type galaxies are important, as they are correlated with the physical properties of the galaxies and are influenced by galaxy formation processes. In this paper, we report on a sample of 132 E and SO galaxies in one LFC field. We have redshifts for 53 of these, obtained using AAOmega on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The shapes of early-type galaxies often vary with radius. We derive average values of isophotal shape parameters in four different radial bins along the semi-major axis in each galaxy. We obtain empirical fitting formulae for the probability distribution of the isophotal parameters in each bin and investigate for possible correlations with other global properties of the galaxies. Our main finding is that the isophotal shapes of the inner regions are statistically different from those in the outer regions. This suggests that the outer and inner parts of early-type galaxies have evolved somewhat independently.

- Serendipity slew survey measurements were acquired with the ISOPHOT C200 detector installed on the ISO mission. The C200 detector is a 2x2 pixel array of stressed Ge:Ga with a pixel size of 89.4arcsec, and was used in conjunction with the C160 broad-band filter (reference wavelength 170{mu}m, width 89{mu}m). During the lifetime of the ISO mission, about 550 hours of measurements have been gathered with more than 12000 slews. From the slew data with low (100{mu}m<=15MJy/sr) cirrus background, 115 well-observed sources with a high signal to noise ratio in all detector pixels having a galaxy association were extracted. The 170{mu}m fluxes measured from the Serendipity slews have been put on an absolute flux level by using calibration sources observed additionally with the photometric mapping mode of ISOPHOT. For all but a few galaxies, the 170{mu}m fluxes are determined for the first time, which represents a significant increase in he number of galaxies with measured Far-Infrared (FIR) fluxes beyond the IRAS 100{mu}m limit.
