- We have used the Two Micron All Sky Survey and Palomar Observatory Sky Survey photographic plates, digitized by the US Naval Observatory's Precision Measuring Machine program, to derive proper motions over a 100 square degree, spatially complete region centered on the Praesepe open cluster. Proper-motion measurements spanned the magnitude range R~12-19, which covers most of the lower main sequence in Praesepe. The incidence of H{alpha} emission from moderate-resolution (~2600), red spectroscopy of 434 faint candidate members and 126 field control stars demonstrates that ~60%-80% of candidates within 2{deg} of the cluster center are genuine Praesepe members.

- JHKs photometry is presented from a 3.5yr survey of the central regions of the irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The morphology of the colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams is discussed with particular reference to M-, S- and C-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and to M supergiants. Mean JHKs magnitudes and periods are given for 11 O-rich and 50 presumed C-rich Miras. Data are also listed for 27 large-amplitude AGB stars without periods and for 69 small-amplitude AGB variables. The slope of the bolometric period-luminosity relation for the C-rich Miras is in good agreement with that in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Distance moduli derived from the C- and O-rich Miras are in agreement with other estimates. The period distribution of C-rich Miras in NGC 6822 is similar to that in the Magellanic Clouds, but differs from that in the dwarf spheroidals in the Local Group. In the latter there is a significant proportion of large-amplitude, short-period variables indicating a population producing old carbon-rich AGB stars.

- We report the discovery of a new young stellar cluster and molecular cloud located in the far outer Galaxy, seen towards IRAS 06361-0142, and we characterise their properties. Near-infrared images obtained with VLT/ISAAC through JHK filters, millimetre line observations of CO(1-0) obtained with SEST, and VLA 6cm continuum maps obtained from archive data.

- We present high-quality near-infrared photometry of four bulge metal-rich globular clusters, namely: NGC 6304, NGC 6569, NGC 6637 and NGC 6638. By using the observed Colour-Magnitude Diagrams we derived a photometric estimates of the cluster reddening and distance. We performed a detailed analysis of the Red Giant Branch, presenting a complete description of morphologic parameters and evolutionary features (Bump and Tip). Photometric estimates of the cluster metallicity have been obtained by using the updated set of relations (published by our group) linking the metal abundance to a variety of near-Infrared indices measured along the Red Giant Branch. The detection of the Red Giant Branch Bump and the Tip is also presented and briefly discussed.

- We present the results of a J, H, and Ks photometric monitoring campaign of a 0.72{deg}x6{deg} area centered on the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. Data were obtained on 15 separate nights over a 4 month time interval, from January to May 2000, using the Two Micron All Sky Survey south telescope. Out of a total of 34,539 sources brighter than the photometric completeness limits (J=16.0, H=15.2, and Ks=14.8), 95 exhibit near-infrared variability in one or more bands. The variables can be grouped into a population of bright, red objects that are associated with the Chamaeleon I association and a population of faint, blue variables that are dispersed over the full 6{deg} of the survey and are likely field stars or older pre-main-sequence stars unrelated to the present-day Chamaeleon I molecular cloud. Ten new candidate members of Chamaeleon I, including eight brown dwarf candidates, have been identified based on variability and/or near-infrared-excess emission in the J-H versus H-Ks color-color diagram. We also provide a compendium of astrometry and J, H, and Ks photometry for previously identified members and candidate members of Chamaeleon I.

- The estimated total number of Milky Way globulars is 160+/-20. The question of whether there are any more undiscovered globular clusters in the Milky Way is particularly relevant with advances in near and mid-IR instrumentation. This investigation is a part of a long-term project to search the inner Milky Way for hidden star clusters and to study them in detail. GLIMPSE-C02 (G02) is one of these objects, situated near the Galactic plane (l=14.129{deg}, b=-0.644{deg}). Our analysis is based on SOFI/NTT JHKs imaging and low resolution (R~1400) spectroscopy of three bright cluster red giants in the K atmospheric window. We derived the metal abundance by analysis of these spectra and from the slope of the RGB.

- We have studied the properties of an infrared cluster embedded in the gas and dust of the southern part of the Carina nebula (NGC 3372), where the probable existence of current star formation has already been predicted. We used mid-infrared (A and C bands) and near-infrared (JHKs) images from the Midcourse Space Experiment and the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey, respectively, combined with an optical H{alpha} narrow-band filter image obtained at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The infrared star cluster has at least 17 members, and its parameters, radius and stellar density are in very good agreement with high- to intermediate-mass star formation scenarios. The detected infrared sources have roughly the same intrinsic infrared excess determined from their position in colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams, suggesting that these objects could be related to pre-main-sequence stars of high to intermediate mass. Furthermore, we present a low-dispersion spectrum of the LS 1883 (O9.5V) star located near the centre of the infrared cluster. The position of this object in the colour-colour and colour-magnitude infrared diagrams lies close to the reddening vector of a zero-age main-sequence O9V spectral-type star, and it seems to be the first star of this cluster to emerge. All these facts are consistent with the current star-forming scenarios associated with highly embedded star clusters.

- A detailed study of the Hourglass nebula in the M8 star-forming region is presented. The study is mainly based on recent subarcsec-resolution JHKs images taken at Las Campanas Observatory and complemented with archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and long-slit spectroscopy retrieved from the European Southern Observatory Archive Facility. Using the new numerical code CHORIZOS, we estimate the distance to the earliest stars in the region to be 1.25kpc. Infrared photometry of all the sources detected in the field is given.

- IC 1396N is a bright-rimmed cloud associated with an intermediate-mass star-forming region, where a number of Herbig-Haro objects, H2 jet-like features, CO molecular outflows, and millimeter compact sources have been observed. We study the complex structure of the IC 1396N core and the molecular outflows detected in the region in detail and reveal the presence of additional YSOs inside this globule. We carried out a deep survey of the IC 1396N region in the J, H, K' broadband filters and deep high-angular resolution observations in the H2 narrowband filter with NICS at the TNG telescope. The completeness limits in the 2MASS standard are Ks~17.5, H~18.5, and J~19.5.

- We present a study of the evolved stellar populations in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo II, based on JHKs observations obtained with the near-infrared array WFCAM at the UKIRT telescope. Combining the new data with optical data, we derived photometric estimates of the distribution of global metallicity [M/H] of individual red giant stars from their V-Ks colours. Our results are consistent with the metallicities of red giant branch (RGB) stars obtained from CaII triplet spectroscopy, once the age effects are considered.
