- We present the results of a narrow-band infrared imaging survey of a narrow strip (12' wide) around the Galactic equator between 6{deg} and 21{deg} of galactic longitude aimed at detecting field stars with strong CO absorption, mainly late-type giants and supergiants. Our observations include follow-up low resolution spectroscopy (R=980) of 191 selected candidates in the H and K bands.

- This is the first paper of a series aimed at studying the properties of late-type members of young stellar kinematic groups. We concentrate our study on classical young moving groups such as the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 2-150Myr), IC 2391 supercluster (35Myr), Ursa Major group (Sirius supercluster, 300Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600Myr), as well as on recently identified groups such as the Castor moving group (200Myr). In this paper we compile a preliminary list of single late-type possible members of some of these young stellar kinematic groups. Stars are selected from previously established members of stellar kinematic groups based on photometric and kinematic properties as well as from candidates based on other criteria such as their level of chromospheric activity, rotation rate and lithium abundance. Precise measurements of proper motions and parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos Catalogue, as well as from the Tycho-2 Catalogue, and published radial velocity measurements are used to calculate the Galactic space motions (U, V, W) and to apply Eggen's kinematic criteria in order to determine the membership of the selected stars to the different groups.

- In this work we present spectroscopic observations centered in the spectral lines most widely used as optical indicators of chromospheric activity (H{alpha}, H{beta}, Ca II H & K, and He I D{3}) in a sample of F, G, K and M chromospherically inactive stars. The spectra have been obtained with the aim of providing a library of high and mid-resolution spectra to be used in the application of the spectral subtraction technique to obtain the active-chromosphere contribution to these lines in chromospherically active single and binary stars. This library can also be used for spectral classification purposes. A digital version with all the spectra is available via ftp and the World Wide Web (WWW) in both ASCII and FITS formats

- Low-resolution objective-prism spectra (1360{AA}/mm at H{gamma}) of 184 late-type stars in the Galactic antirotation direction have been obtained with the Curtis Schmidt telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The stars have been classified into three groups: F6-G2, G3-K0, and K1-M8. Subsequent observations on the BV and DDO systems have been obtained. The correlation between the thin-prism classes and the DDO classes is as expected, with no significant systematic differences of note. A comparison of Guide Star Catalog magnitudes, corrected to V, is also made, with favorable results. The stars in this list are expected to be useful for studying the structure and star formation history of the Milky Way.

- We have used WFPC2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain images of 47 members of the Taurus and Chamaeleon I star-forming regions that have spectral types of M6-L0 (M~0.01-0.1 M_{sun}_). An additional late-type member of Taurus, FU Tau (M7.25+M9.25), was also observed with adaptive optics at Keck Observatory. In these images, we have identified promising candidate companions to 2MASS J04414489+2301513 ({rho}=0.105"/15 AU), 2MASS J04221332+1934392 ({rho}=0.05"/7 AU), and ISO 217 ({rho}=0.03"/5 AU). We reported the first candidate in a previous study, showing that it has a similar proper motion as the primary in images from WFPC2 and Gemini adaptive optics. We have collected an additional epoch of data with Gemini that further supports that result. By combining our survey with previous high-resolution imaging in Taurus, Chamaeleon I, and Upper Sco ({tau}~10 Myr), we measure binary fractions of 14/93=0.15_-0.03_^+0.05^ for M4-M6 (M~0.1-0.3 M_{sun}_) and 4/108=0.04_-0.01_^+0.03^ for >M6 (M<~0.1 M_{sun}_) at separations of >10 AU. Given the youth and low density of these regions, the lower binary fraction at later types is probably primordial rather than due to dynamical interactions among association members. The widest low-mass binaries (>100 AU) also appear to be more common in Taurus and Chamaeleon I than in the field, which suggests that the widest low-mass binaries are disrupted by dynamical interactions at >10 Myr, or that field brown dwarfs have been born predominantly in denser clusters where wide systems are disrupted or inhibited from forming.

- It has previously been discovered that there is a universal power-law behavior exhibited by the late X-ray emission (LXRE) of a "golden sample" of six long energetic GRBs, when observed in the rest frame of the source. This remarkable feature, independent of the different isotropic energy (E_iso_) of each GRB, has been used to estimate the cosmological redshift of some long GRBs. This analysis is extended here to a new class of 161 long GRBs, all with E_iso_>10^52^erg. These GRBs are indicated as binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe) in view of their progenitors: a tight binary system composed of a carbon-oxygen core (CO_core_) and a neutron star undergoing an induced gravitational collapse (IGC) to a black hole triggered by the CO_core_ explosion as a supernova (SN).

The photometric redshifts and the uncertainty of the estimates for each sources have been calculated using the Weak Gated Expert (WGE) method. The WGE (Laurino et al., submitted to MNRAS) is based on the exploitation of the spectroscopic redshifts for a subset of photometric sources and derives photometric redshifts through a combination of data mining techniques. This method can be applied to different classes of extragalactic sources and is scalable. A set of observational parameters used for the evaluation of photometric redshifts, the estimated photometric redshifts values and some of the most common observational parameters retrieved from the SDSS database have been included in the catalog for the sake of simplicity.

- We present a catalogue of accurate positions and correlated flux densities for 410 flat-spectrum, compact extragalactic radio sources previously detected in the AT20G survey. The catalogue spans the declination range [-90{deg}, -40{deg}] and was constructed from four 24-hour VLBI observing sessions with the Australian Long Baseline Array at 8.3GHz. The VLBI detection rate in these experiments is 97%, the median uncertainty of the source positions is 2.6mas, and the median correlated flux density on projected baselines longer than 1000km is 0.14Jy. The goals of this work are 1) to provide a pool of southern sources with positions accurate to a few milliarcsec, which can be used for phase referencing observations, geodetic VLBI and space navigation; 2) to extend the complete flux-limited sample of compact extragalactic sources to the southern hemisphere; and 3) to investigate the parsec-scale properties of high-frequency selected sources from the AT20G survey. As a result of this VLBI campaign, the number of compact radio sources south of declination -40 deg which have measured VLBI correlated flux densities and positions known to milliarcsec accuracy has increased by a factor of 3.5.
