- CCD photometric standard stars in the BVRc system of Johnson and Cousins are presented for two regions of importance in studies of galactic structure and kinematics: the North galactic pole (NGP), and a second galactic plane region (GPR) toward the anticenter. Precision and accuracy are better than 0.05mag down to V=18-18.5. These data are part of the Second Guide Photometric Catalog (GSPC-II).

- A new Monte Carlo method has been developed in order to derive ages of young embedded clusters in massive star-forming regions where there is strong differential reddening. After foreground and infrared excess source candidates are removed, each cluster candidate star is individually dereddened. Simulated clusters are constructed using isochrones, an initial mass function, realistic photometric errors, simulated background field populations and extinction distributions. These synthetic clusters are then dereddened in the same way as the real data, obtained from a deep near-infrared survey, and used to derive the ages of three embedded clusters. Results were found to be consistent with those determined using spectrophotometric methods. This new method provides way to determine the ages of embedded clusters when only photometric data are available and there is strong differential reddening.

- Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) have been used as standardizable candles in the optical wavelengths to measure distances with an accuracy of ~7% out to redshift z~1.5. There is evidence that in the near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths SNe Ia are even better standard candles, however, NIR observations are much more time-consuming. We aim to test whether the NIR peak magnitudes could be accurately estimated with only a single observation obtained close to maximum light, provided that the time of B band maximum, the B-V color at maximum and the optical stretch parameter are known. We present multi-epoch UBVRI and single-epoch J and H photometric observations of 16 SNe Ia in the redshift range z=0.037-0.183, doubling the leverage of the current SN Ia NIR Hubble diagram and the number of SNe beyond redshift 0.04. This sample was analyzed together with 102 NIR and 458 optical light curves (LCs) of normal SNe Ia from the literature. Results. The analysis of 45 NIR LCs with well-sampled first maximum shows that a single template accurately describes the LCs if its time axis is stretched with the optical stretch parameter. This allows us to estimate the peak NIR magnitudes of SNe with only few observations obtained within ten days from B-band maximum. The NIR Hubble residuals show weak correlation with {Delta}M_15_ and the color excess E(B-V), and for the first time we report a potential dependence on the Jmax-Hmax color. With these corrections, the intrinsic NIR luminosity scatter of SNe Ia is estimated to be ~0.10mag, which is smaller than what can be derived for a similarly heterogeneous sample at optical wavelengths. Analysis of both NIR and optical data shows that the dust extinction in the host galaxies corresponds to a low RV~=1.8-1.9. We conclude that SNe Ia are at least as good standard candles in the NIR as in the optical and are potentially less affected by systematic uncertainties. We extended the NIR SN Ia Hubble diagram to its nonlinear part at z~0.2 and confirmed that it is feasible to accomplish this result with very modest sampling of the NIR LCs, if complemented by well-sampled optical LCs. With future facilities it will be possible to extend the NIR Hubble diagram beyond redshift z~=1, and our results suggest that the most efficient way to achieve this would be to obtain a single observation close to the NIR maximum.

- We present a catalog of secondary photometric standard stars in the neighborhood of 14 gravitationally lensed quasars. These stars were verified to be non variable using long-term monitoring. The instrumental magnitudes of the new standard stars have been transformed to the Johnson-Cousins BV(RI)c photometric system. For ten gravitational lenses (GLs) we also provide the BV(RI)c mean magnitudes of the integrated flux of all the lens components, for the epochs of the photometric calibration.

- CCD photometry is presented for 119 stars observed in the Thuan-Gunn photometric system (the passbands vgr). The sample includes 82 stars for which magnitudes in this system have not previously been published. Photometry in the Johnson-Kron-Cousins photometric system (BV or UBV) has been obtained for a sub-sample of 85 of the stars. Of those stars which are not primary standard stars for the Thuan-Gunn system 70 observed in Gunn r, 48 observed in Gunn g, and 37 observed in Gunn v have sufficient repeat measurements that they may be used as secondary standard stars for CCD photometry. The typical uncertain- ties for the magnitudes of these stars are 0.006 mag.

- We present a new set of secondary standard stars for the u'g'r'i'z' photometric system that has been established in selected open and globular star clusters. These standards are calibrated to the original standard system defined by Smith et al. with an accuracy of 1% or better, extend as faint as r'~20, and are concentrated in small regions of the sky. As a result, they can serve as viable calibrators of photometry obtained on some of the large-aperture, high-demand telescopes that employ the u'g'r'i'z' filter set.

- We present an analysis of ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared observations of the fast-declining Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) 2007on and 2011iv, hosted by the Fornax cluster member NGC 1404. The B-band light curves of SN 2007on and SN 2011iv are characterised by {Delta}m15(B) decline-rate values of 1.96mag and 1.77mag, respectively. Although they have similar decline rates, their peak B- and H-band magnitudes differ by ~0.60mag and ~0.35mag, respectively. After correcting for the luminosity vs. decline rate and the luminosity vs. colour relations, the peak B-band and H-band light curves provide distances that differ by ~14% and ~9%, respectively. These findings serve as a cautionary tale for the use of transitional SNe Ia located in early-type hosts in the quest to measure cosmological parameters. Interestingly, even though SN 2011iv is brighter and bluer at early times, by three weeks past maximum and extending over several months, its B-V colour is 0.12mag redder than that of SN 2007on. To reconcile this unusual behaviour, we turn to guidance from a suite of spherical one-dimensional Chandrasekhar-mass delayed-detonation explosion models. In this context, ^56^Ni production depends on both the so-called transition density and the central density of the progenitor white dwarf. To first order, the transition density drives the luminosity-width relation, while the central density is an important second-order parameter. Within this context, the differences in the B-V colour evolution along the Lira regime suggest that the progenitor of SN 2011iv had a higher central density than SN 2007on.

- A single table combines the revised and extended results of 24 series of photometric observations made in South Africa between 1947 and 1960 on the nine Harvard E regions at declination -45{deg}. For each of about 90 stars in each region are tabulated V and B-V on the standard U,B,V system, an ultraviolet-free blue magnitude S'Pg, a photovisual magnitude SPv and, in most cases, an ultraviolet minus blue colour (U-B)_C_. The internal standard error of an entry is +/-0.01mag or less.

- Accurate standard uvby indices are presented for 73 southern B, A, F and G stars in the V magnitude range 8.2 to 10.9. They cover all three transformation regions of the uvby system (Olsen 1983A&AS...54...55O) well. Standard {beta} indices are included for the 55 B, A, and F stars in the sample. Our results provide a useful set of secondary standards for uvby {beta} CCD photometry with southern hemisphere 1-2m class telescopes. A critical comparison with published photometry, in general based on fewer observations, is given.
