- A line list for methane (CH_4_) is constructed as a combination of 17 million strong absorption lines relative to the reference absorption spectra and a background methane continuum in two temperature-dependent forms of cross sections and super-lines. This approach significantly eases the use of large high temperature line lists as the computationally expensive calculation of pressure-dependent profiles (e.g. Voigt) only need to be performed for a relatively small number of lines. Both the line list and cross sections were generated using a new 34 billion methane line list (known as 34to10), which extends the 10to10 line list to higher temperatures (up to 2000K). The new hybrid scheme can be applied to any large line lists containing billions of transitions. We recommend using super-lines generated on a high resolution grid based on a resolving power of R=1000000 to model the molecular continuum as a more flexible alternative to the temperature-dependent cross sections.

- By 2007 December 14, 383 galaxies within 40Mpc with isophotal major axis above 1arcmin had been observed by 626 public Chandra/ACIS observations, most of which were for the first time analyzed by this survey to study the X-ray point sources. Uniform data analysis procedures are applied to the 626 ACIS observations and lead to the detection of 28099 point sources, which belong to 17599 independent sources. These include 8700 sources observed twice or more and 1000 sources observed 10 times or more, providing us a wealth of data to study the long-term variability of these X-ray sources. Cross-correlation of these sources with galaxy isophotes led to 8519 sources within the D_25_ isophotes of 351 galaxies, 3305 sources between the D_25_ and 2D_25_ isophotes of 309 galaxies, and additionally 5735 sources outside 2D_25_ isophotes of galaxies. This survey has produced a uniform catalog, by far the largest, of 11824 X-ray point sources within 2D_25_ isophotes of 380 galaxies. Contamination analysis using the log N-log S relation shows that 74% of sources within 2D_25_ isophotes above 10^39^erg/s, 71% of sources above 10^38^erg/s, 63% of sources above 10^37^erg/s, and 56% of all sources are truly associated with galaxies. Meticulous efforts have identified 234 X-ray sources with galactic nuclei of nearby galaxies. This archival survey leads to 300 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with L_X_(0.3-8keV)>=2x10^39^erg/s within D_25_ isophotes, 179 ULXs between D_25_ and 2D_25_ isophotes, and a total of 479 ULXs within 188 host galaxies, with about 324 ULXs truly associated with host galaxies based on the contamination analysis.

- Based on the recently completed Chandra/ACIS survey of X-ray point sources in nearby galaxies, we study the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) for X-ray point sources in different types of galaxies and the statistical properties of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). Uniform procedures are developed to compute the detection threshold, to estimate the foreground/background contamination, and to calculate the XLFs for individual galaxies and groups of galaxies, resulting in an XLF library of 343 galaxies of different types. With the large number of surveyed galaxies, we have studied the XLFs and ULX properties across different host galaxy types, and confirm with good statistics that the XLF slope flattens from lenticular ({alpha}{\sim}1.50{\pm}0.07) to elliptical ({\sim}1.21{\pm}0.02), to spirals ({\sim}0.80{\pm}0.02), to peculiars ({\sim}0.55{\pm}0.30), and to irregulars ({\sim}0.26{\pm}0.10). The XLF break dividing the neutron star and black hole binaries is also confirmed, albeit at quite different break luminosities for different types of galaxies. A radial dependency is found for ellipticals, with a flatter XLF slope for sources located between D_25_ and 2D_25_, suggesting the XLF slopes in the outer region of early-type galaxies are dominated by low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters. This study shows that the ULX rate in early-type galaxies is 0.24{\pm}0.05 ULXs per surveyed galaxy, on a 5{sigma} confidence level. The XLF for ULXs in late-type galaxies extends smoothly until it drops abruptly around 4x10^40^erg/s, and this break may suggest a mild boundary between the stellar black hole population possibly including 30M{\sun} black holes with super-Eddington radiation and intermediate mass black holes.

- We present an overview of the Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33): A Deep Survey of the Nearest Face-on Spiral Galaxy. The 1.4Ms survey covers the galaxy out to R~18'(~4kpc). These data provide the most intensive, high spatial resolution assessment of the X-ray source populations available for the confused inner regions of M33. The initial source catalog, arising from ~2/3 of the expected survey data, includes 394 sources significant at the 3{sigma} confidence level or greater, down to a limiting luminosity (absorbed) of ~1.6x10^35^ergs/s (0.35-8.0keV). The hardness ratios of the sources separate those with soft, thermal spectra such as supernova remnants from those with hard, nonthermal spectra such as X-ray binaries and background active galactic nuclei. Emission extended beyond the Chandra point-spread function is evident in 23 of the 394 sources. Cross-correlation of the ChASeM33 sources against previous catalogs of X-ray sources in M33 results in matches for the vast majority of the brighter sources and shows 28 ChASeM33 sources within 10" of supernova remnants identified by prior optical and radio searches. This brings the total number of such associations to 31 out of 100 known supernova remnants in M33.

- New Chandra X-ray data and extensive optical spectroscopy, obtained with AAOmega on the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope, are used to study the complex merger taking place in the galaxy cluster Abell 2744. Combining our spectra with data from the literature provides a catalog of 1237 redshifts for extragalactic objects lying within 15' of the cluster center. From these, we confirm 343 cluster members projected within 3Mpc of the cluster center. Combining positions and velocities, we identify two major substructures, corresponding to the remnants of two major subclusters. The new data are consistent with a post-core-passage, major merger taking place along an axis that is tilted well out of the plane of the sky, together with an interloping minor merger. Supporting this interpretation, the new X-ray data reveal enriched, low entropy gas from the core of the approaching, major subcluster, lying ~2' north of the cluster center, and a shock front to the southeast of the previously known bright, compact core associated with the receding subcluster. The X-ray morphology of the compact core is consistent with a Bullet-like cluster viewed from within ~45{deg} of the merger axis. An X-ray peak ~3' northwest of the cluster center, with an associated cold front to the northeast and a trail of low entropy gas to the south, is interpreted as the remnant of an interloping minor merger taking place roughly in the plane of the sky. We infer approximate paths for the three merging components.

- We present the results from Chandra X-ray observations, and near- and mid-infrared analysis, using VISTA/VVV and Spitzer/GLIMPSE catalogs, of the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 16562-3959, which contains a candidate for a high-mass protostar. We detected 249 X-ray sources within the ACIS-I field of view. The majority of the X-ray sources have low count rates (<0.638cts/ks) and hard X-ray spectra. The search for YSOs in the region using VISTA/VVV and Spitzer/GLIMPSE catalogs resulted in a total of 636 YSOs, with 74 Class I and 562 Class II YSOs. The search for near- and mid-infrared counterparts of the X-ray sources led to a total of 165 VISTA/VVV counterparts, and a total of 151 Spitzer/GLIMPSE counterparts. The infrared analysis of the X-ray counterparts allowed us to identify an extra 91 Class III YSOs associated with the region. We conclude that a total of 727 YSOs are associated with the region, with 74 Class I, 562 Class II, and 91 Class III YSOs. We also found that the region is composed of 16 subclusters. In the vicinity of the high-mass protostar, the stellar distribution has a core-halo structure. The subcluster containing the high-mass protostar is the densest and the youngest in the region, and the high-mass protostar is located at its center. The YSOs in this cluster appear to be substantially older than the high-mass protostar.

- The aim of this work is to identify the so far unknown low mass stellar population of the ~2Myr old Cygnus OB2 star forming region, and to investigate the X-ray and near-IR stellar properties of its members. We analyzed a 97.7ks Chandra ACIS-I observation pointed at the core of the Cygnus OB2 region. Sources were detected using the PWDETECT code and were positionally correlated with optical and near- IR catalogs from the literature. Source events were extracted with the Acis E XTRACT package. X-ray variability was characterized through the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and spectra were fitted using absorbed thermal plasma models. We detected 1003 X-ray sources. Of these, 775 have near-IR counterparts and are expected to be almost all associated with Cygnus OB2 members.

- We present a catalog of ~14000 X-ray sources observed by the ACIS instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory within a 1.42deg^2^ survey of the Great Nebula in Carina, known as the Chandra Carina Complex Project (CCCP). This study appears in a special issue devoted to the CCCP. Here, we describe the data reduction and analysis procedures performed on the X-ray observations, including calibration and cleaning of the X-ray event data, point-source detection, and source extraction. The catalog appears to be complete across most of the field to an absorption-corrected total-band luminosity of ~10^30.7^erg/s for a typical low-mass pre-main-sequence star. Counterparts to the X-ray sources are identified in a variety of visual, near-infrared, and mid-infrared surveys. The X-ray and infrared source properties presented here form the basis of many CCCP studies of the young stellar populations in Carina.

- We have obtained high-resolution (<~1") deep X-ray images of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to study the population of compact binaries in the high stellar density core. A 70-kilosecond exposure of the cluster reveals a centrally concentrated population of faint (L_X_~10^30-33^ergs/s) X-ray sources, with at least 108 located within the central 2'x2.5' and >~half with L_X_<~10^30.5^ergs/s. All 15 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) recently located precisely by radio observations are identified, though 2 are unresolved by Chandra. The X-ray spectral and temporal characteristics, as well as initial optical identifications with the Hubble Space Telescope, suggest that >~50 percent are MSPs, about 30 percent are accreting white dwarfs, about 15 percent are main-sequence binaries in flare outbursts, and only two to three are quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries containing neutron stars, the conventional progenitors of MSPs. An upper limit of about 470 times the mass of the sun is derived for the mass of an accreting central black hole in the cluster. These observations provide the first X-ray ``color-magnitude'' diagram for a globular cluster and census of its compact object and binary population. Observations were made on UT 16.31 - 17.22 March, 2000.

- The Chandra COSMOS Survey (C-COSMOS) is a large, 1.8Ms, Chandra program that has imaged the central 0.5deg^2^ of the COSMOS field (centered at 10h, +02d) with an effective exposure of ~160ks, and an outer 0.4deg^2^ area with an effective exposure of ~80ks. The limiting source detection depths are 1.9x10^-16^erg/cm2/s in the soft (0.5-2keV) band, 7.3x10^-16^erg/cm2/s in the hard (2-10keV) band, and 5.7x10^-16^erg/cm2/s in the full (0.5-10keV) band. Here we describe the strategy, design, and execution of the C-COSMOS survey, and present the catalog of 1761 point sources detected at a probability of being spurious of <2x10^-5^ (1655 in the full, 1340 in the soft, and 1017 in the hard bands). By using a grid of 36 heavily (~50%) overlapping pointing positions with the ACIS-I imager, a remarkably uniform (+/-12%) exposure across the inner 0.5deg^2^ field was obtained, leading to a sharply defined lower flux limit. The widely different point-spread functions obtained in each exposure at each point in the field required a novel source detection method, because of the overlapping tiling strategy, which is described in a companion paper. This method produced reliable sources down to a 7-12 counts, as verified by the resulting logN-logS curve, with subarcsecond positions, enabling optical and infrared identifications of virtually all sources, as reported in a second companion paper.
