- We present accretion rates for a large number of solar-type stars in the Cep OB2 region, based on U-band observations. Our study comprises 95 members of the ~4Myr old cluster Tr 37 (including 20 "transition" objects (TOs)), as well as the only classical T Tauri star (CTTS) in the ~12Myr old cluster NGC 7160. The stars show different disk morphologies, with the majority of them having evolved and flattened disks. The typical accretion rates are about 1 order of magnitude lower than in regions aged 1-2Myr, and we find no strong correlation between disk morphology and accretion rates. Although half of the TOs are not accreting, the median accretion rates of normal CTTS and accreting "transition" disks are similar (~3x10^-9^ and 2x10^-9^M_{sun}_/yr, respectively). Comparison with other regions suggests that the TOs observed at different ages do not necessarily represent the same type of objects, which is consistent with the fact that the different processes that can lead to reduced IR excess/inner disk clearing (e.g., binarity, dust coagulation/settling, photoevaporation, giant planet formation) do not operate on the same timescales.

- The distinguishing feature of the evolution of close binary stars is the role played by the mass exchange between the component stars. Whether or not the mass transfer is dynamically stable is one of the essential questions in binary evolution. In the limit of extremely rapid mass transfer, the response of a donor star in an interacting binary becomes asymptotically one of adiabatic expansion. We use the adiabatic mass-loss model to systematically survey the thresholds for dynamical timescale mass transfer over the entire span of possible donor star evolutionary states. We also simulate mass-loss process with isentropic envelopes, the specific entropy of which is fixed to be that at the base of the convective envelope, to artificially mimic the effect of such mass loss in superadiabatic surface convection regions, where the adiabatic approximation fails. We illustrate the general adiabatic response of 3.2M{odot} donor stars at different evolutionary stages. We extend our study to a grid of donor stars with different masses (from 0.1 to 100 M{sun} with Z=0.02) and at different evolutionary stages. We proceed to present our criteria for dynamically unstable mass transfer in both tabular and graphical forms. For red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) donors in systems with such mass ratios, they may have convective envelopes deep enough to evolve into common envelopes on a thermal timescale, if the donor star overfills its outer Lagrangian radius. Our results show that the RGB and AGB stars tend to be more stable than previously believed, and this may be helpful to explain the abundance of observed post-AGB binary stars with an orbital period of around 1000 days.

- Aluminium oxide (alumina; Al_2_O_3_) is a promising candidate as a primary dust condensate in the atmospheres of oxygen-rich evolved stars. Therefore, alumina 'seed' particles might trigger the onset of stellar dust formation and of stellar mass loss in the wind. However, the formation of alumina dust grains is not well understood. Aims. We aim to shed light on the initial steps of cosmic dust formation (i.e. nucleation) in oxygen-rich environments via a quantum- chemical bottom-up approach. Starting with an elemental gas-phase composition, we construct a detailed chemical-kinetic network that describes the formation and destruction of aluminium-bearing molecules and dust- forming (Al_2_O_3_)_n_ clusters up to the size of dimers (n=2) coagulating to tetramers (n=4). Intermediary species include the prevalent gas- phase molecules AlO and AlOH as well as Al_x_O_y_ clusters with x=1-5, y=1-6. The resulting extensive network is applied to two model stars, which represent a semi-regular variable and a Mira type, and to different circumstellar gas trajectories, including a non-pulsating outflow and a pulsating model. The growth of larger-sized (Al_2_O_3_)_n_ clusters with n=4-10 is described by the temperature-dependent Gibbs free energies of the most favourable structures (i.e. the global minima clusters) as derived from global optimisation techniques and calculated via density functional theory. We provide energies, bond characteristics, electrostatic properties, and vibrational spectra of the clusters as a function of size, n, and compare these to corundum, which corresponds to the crystalline bulk limit (n to infinity). The circumstellar aluminium gas-phase chemistry in oxygen- rich giants is primarily controlled by AlOH and AlO, which are tightly coupled by the reactions AlO+H_2_, AlO+H_2_O, and their reverse. Models of semi-regular variables show comparatively higher AlO abundances, as well as a later onset and a lower efficiency of alumina cluster formation when compared to Mira-like models. The Mira-like models exhibit an efficient cluster production that accounts for more than 90% of the available aluminium content, which is in agreement with the most recent ALMA observations. Chemical equilibrium calculations fail to predict both the alumina cluster formation and the abundance trends of AlO and AlOH in the asymptotic giant branch dust formation zone. Furthermore, we report the discovery of hitherto unreported global minimum candidates and low-energy isomers for cluster sizes n=7, 9, and 10. A homogeneous nucleation scenario, where Al2O3 monomers are successively added, is energetically viable. However, the formation of the Al2O3 monomer itself represents an energetic bottleneck. Therefore, we provide a bottom-up interpolation of the cluster characteristics towards the bulk limit by excluding the monomer, approximately following an n^(-1/3)^ dependence.

- We present the data from a mid-infrared (MIR) imaging survey of 66 proto-planetary nebula candidates using two MIR cameras (MIRAC2 and Berkcam) at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope. The goal of this survey is to determine the size, flux, and morphology of the MIR emission regions, which sample the inner regions of the circumstellar dust shells of protoplanetary nebulae. We imaged these protoplanetary nebulae with narrowband filters({delta}{lambda}/{lambda}{=~}10%) at wavelengths of notable dust features. With our typical angular resolution of 1'', we resolve 17 sources, find 48 objects unresolved, and do not detect one source. For several sources we checked optical and infrared associations and positions of the sources. In table format, we list the size and flux measurements for all of the detected objects and show figures of all of the resolved sources. The proto-planetary nebula candidate sample includes, in addition to the predominant proto-planetary nebulae, extreme asymptotic giant branch stars, young planetary nebulae, a supergiant, and a luminous blue variable. We find that dust shells that are cooler (T{=~}150 K) and brighter in the infrared are more easily resolved. Eleven of the seventeen resolved sources are extended and fall into one of two types of MIR morphological classes: core/elliptical or toroidal. Core/elliptical structures show unresolved cores with lower surface brightness elliptical nebulae. Toroidal structures show limb-brightened peaks suggesting equatorial density enhancements. We argue that core/ellipticals have denser dust shells than toroidals.

- We present a clean, magnitude-limited (IRAC1 or WISE1<=15.0mag) multiwavelength source catalog for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The catalog was built by crossmatching (1'') and deblending (3'') between the source list of Spitzer Enhanced Imaging Products (SEIP) and Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), with strict constraints on the Gaia astrometric solution in order to remove the foreground contamination. It is estimated that about 99.5% of the targets in our catalog are most likely genuine members of the LMC. The catalog contains 197004 targets in 52 different bands, including two ultraviolet, 21 optical, and 29 infrared bands. Additional information about radial velocities and spectral and photometric classifications were collected from the literature. We compare our sample with the sample from Gaia DR2 (2018A&A...616A...1G, Cat. I/345), indicating that the bright end of our sample is mostly comprised of blue helium-burning stars (BHeBs) and red HeBs with inevitable contamination of main sequence stars at the blue end. After applying modified magnitude and color cuts based on previous studies, we identified and ranked 2974 red supergiant, 508 yellow supergiant, and 4786 blue supergiant candidates in the LMC in six color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). The comparison between the CMDs from the two catalogs of the LMC and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) indicates that the most distinct difference appears at the bright red end of the optical and near-infrared CMDs, where the cool evolved stars (e.g., red supergiant stars (RSGs), asymptotic giant branch stars, and red giant stars) are located, which is likely due to the effect of metallicity and star formation history. A further quantitative comparison of colors of massive star candidates in equal absolute magnitude bins suggests that there is essentially no difference for the BSG candidates, but a large discrepancy for the RSG candidates since LMC targets are redder than the SMC ones, which may be due to the combined effect of metallicity on both spectral type and mass-loss rate as well as the age effect. The effective temperatures (Teff) of massive star populations are also derived from reddening-free color of (J-K_S_0. The Teff ranges are 3500<Teff<5000K for an RSG population, 5000<Teff<8000K for a YSG population, and Teff>8000K for a BSG population, with larger uncertainties toward the hotter stars.

- We present a clean, magnitude-limited (IRAC1 or WISE1 <=15.0mag) multiwavelength source catalog for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with 45466 targets in total, with the purpose of building an anchor for future studies, especially for the massive star populations at low-metallicity. The catalog contains data in 50 different bands including 21 optical and 29 infrared bands, retrieved from SEIP, VMC, IRSF, AKARI, HERITAGE, Gaia, SkyMapper, NSC, Massey (2002, Cat. II/236), and GALEX, ranging from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared. Additionally, radial velocities and spectral classifications were collected from the literature, and infrared and optical variability statistics were retrieved from WISE, SAGE-Var, VMC, IRSF, Gaia, NSC, and OGLE. The catalog was essentially built upon a 1" crossmatching and a 3" deblending between the Spitzer Enhanced Imaging Products (SEIP) source list and Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) photometric data. Further constraints on the proper motions and parallaxes from Gaia DR2 allowed us to remove the foreground contamination. We estimate that about 99.5% of the targets in our catalog are most likely genuine members of the SMC. Using the evolutionary tracks and synthetic photometry from MESA Isochrones & Stellar Tracks and the theoretical J-K_S_ color cuts, we identified 1405 red supergiant (RSG), 217 yellow supergiant, and 1,369 blue supergiant candidates in the SMC in five different color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), where attention should also be paid to the incompleteness of our sample. We ranked the candidates based on the intersection of different CMDs. A comparison between the models and observational data shows that the lower limit of initial mass for the RSG population may be as low as 7 or even 6M_{sun}_ and that the RSG is well separated from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) population even at faint magnitude, making RSGs a unique population connecting the evolved massive and intermediate stars, since stars with initial mass around 6 to 8$M_{sun}_ are thought to go through a second dredge-up to become AGB stars. We encourage the interested reader to further exploit the potential of our catalog.

- Dust is efficiently produced by cool giant stars, but the condensation of inorganic dust is poorly understood. Observations of key aluminum bearing molecules around evolved stars has enabled us to investigate the nucleation of alumina (Al_2_O_3_) dust in the gas. Aims. We aim to identify and characterize aluminum bearing species in the circumstellar gas of Mira (o Ceti) in order to elucidate their role in the production of Al_2_O_3_ dust. We used multiepoch spectral line observations at (sub-)millimeter, far-infrared, and optical wavelengths including: maps with ALMA that probe the gas distribution in the immediate vicinity of the star at ~30mas; observations with ALMA, APEX, and Herschel in 2013-2015 for studying cycle and inter-cycle variability of the rotational lines of Al-bearing molecules; optical records as far back as 1965 to examine variations in electronic transitions over time spans of days to decades; and velocity measurements and excitation analysis of the spectral features that constrain the physical parameters of the gas.

- Luminous red novae (LRNe) are astrophysical transients associated with the partial ejection of a binary system's common envelope (CE) shortly before its merger. Here we present the results of our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up campaign of AT 2018bwo (DLT 18x), a LRN discovered in NGC 45, and investigate its progenitor system using binary stellar-evolution models. The transient reached a peak magnitude of M_r_=-10.97+/-0.11 and maintained this brightness during its optical plateau of t_p_=41+/-5d ays. During this phase, it showed a rather stable photospheric temperature of ~3300K and a luminosity of ~10^40^erg/s. Although the luminosity and duration of AT 2018bwo is comparable to the LRNe V838 Mon and M31-2015LRN, its photosphere at early times appears larger and cooler, likely due to an extended mass-loss episode before the merger. Toward the end of the plateau, optical spectra showed a reddened continuum with strong molecular absorption bands. The IR spectrum at +103 days after discovery was comparable to that of an M8.5 II type star, analogous to an extended AGB star. The reprocessed emission by the cooling dust was also detected in the mid-infrared bands ~1.5 years after the outburst. Archival Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescope data taken 10-14yrs before the transient event suggest a progenitor star with T_prog_~6500K, R_prog_~100R_{sun}_, and L_prog_=2x10^4^L_{sun}_, and an upper limit for optically thin warm (1000K) dust mass of M_d_<10^-6^M_{sun}_. Using stellar binary-evolution models, we determined the properties of binary systems consistent with the progenitor parameter space. For AT 2018bwo, we infer a primary mass of 12-16M_{sun}_, which is 9-45% larger than the ~11M_{sun}_ obtained using single-star evolution models. The system, consistent with a yellow-supergiant primary, was likely in a stable mass-transfer regime with -2.4 <= log (M_dot/Msun /yr) <= -1.2 a decade before the main instability occurred. During the dynamical merger, the system would have ejected 0.15-0.5M_{sun}_ with a velocity of ~500km/s.

- We present the results of our monitoring campaigns of the luminous red novae (LRNe) AT 2020hat in NGC 5068 and AT 2020kog in NGC 6106. The two objects were imaged (and detected) before their discovery by routine survey operations. They show a general trend of slow luminosity rise lasting at least a few months. The subsequent major LRN outbursts were extensively followed in photometry and spectroscopy. The light curves present an initial short-duration peak, followed by a redder plateau phase. AT 2020kog is a moderately luminous event peaking at ~7x10^40^erg/s, while AT 2020hat is almost one order of magnitude fainter than AT 2020kog, although it is still more luminous than V838 Mon. In analogy with other LRNe, the spectra of AT 2020kog change significantly with time. They resemble those of type IIn supernovae at early phases, then they become similar to those of K-type stars during the plateau, and to M-type stars at very late phases. In contrast, AT 2020hat already shows a redder continuum at early epochs, and its spectrum shows the late appearance of molecular bands. A moderate-resolution spectrum of AT 2020hat taken at +37d after maximum shows a forest of narrow P Cygni lines of metals with velocities of 180 km/s, along with an Halpha emission with a full-width at half-maximum velocity of 250km/s. For AT 2020hat, a robust constraint on its quiescent progenitor is provided by archival images of the Hubble Space Telescope. The progenitor is clearly detected as a mid-K type star, with an absolute magnitude of M_F606W=-3.33+/-0.09mag and a colour of F606W-F814W=1.14+/-0.05mag, which are inconsistent with the expectations from a massive star that could later produce a core-collapse supernova. Although quite peculiar, the two objects nicely match the progenitor versus light curve absolute magnitude correlations discussed in the literature.

- Accretion rates and their correlation with cosmological redshifts for a sample of blazars and Seyfert galaxies are presented. The sample includes 77 blazars (28 FSRQs, 26 LBLs, and 23 HBLs) and 60 Seyfert galaxies, of which the extended spectral energy distribution information and redshifts are available. Within the framework of accreting black holes, the accretion rates for these sources were estimated based on their bolometric luminosities.
