- Extragalactic planetary nebulae (PNe) offer a way to determine the distance to their host galaxies thanks to the nearly universal shape of the luminosity function (PNLF). Accurate PNe distance measurements rely on obtaining well- sampled PNLFs and the number of observed PNe scales with the encompassed stellar mass. This means either disposing of wide-field observations or on focusing on the bright central regions of galaxies. In this work we take this second approach and conduct a census of the PNe population in the central regions of galaxies in the Fornax cluster, using VLT/MUSE data for the early- type galaxies observed over the course of the Fornax3D survey. Using such integral-field spectroscopic observations to carefully separate the nebular emission from the stellar continuum, we isolate [OIII] 5007{AA} sources of interest, filter out unresolved impostor sources or kinematic outliers, and present a catalogue of 1350 unique PNe sources across 21 early- type galaxies, which includes their positions, [OIII} 5007{AA} line magnitudes and line-of-sight velocities. Using the PNe catalogued within each galaxy, we present independently-derived distance estimates based on the fit to the entire observed PNLF observed while carefully accounting for the PNe detection incompleteness. With these individual measurements we arrive at an average distance to the Fornax cluster itself of 19.86+/-0.32Mpc ({mu}_PNLF_=31.49+/-0.04mag). Our PNLF distance measurements agree well with previous distances based on surface brightness fluctuations, finding no significant systematic offsets between the two methods as otherwise reported in previous studies.

- We build templates of rotation curves as a function of the I-band luminosity via the mass modeling (by the sum of a thin exponential disk and a cored halo profile) of suitably normalized, stacked data from wide samples of local spiral galaxies. We then exploit such templates to determine fundamental stellar and halo properties for a sample of about 550 local disk-dominated galaxies with high-quality measurements of the optical radius R_opt_ and of the corresponding rotation velocity V_opt_. Specifically, we determine the stellar M_*_ and halo M_H_ masses, the halo size R_H_ and velocity scale V_H_, and the specific angular momenta of the stellar j_*_ and dark matter j_H_ components. We derive global scaling relationships involving such stellar and halo properties both for the individual galaxies in our sample and for their mean within bins; the latter are found to be in pleasing agreement with previous determinations by independent methods (e.g., abundance matching techniques, weak-lensing observations, and individual rotation curve modeling). Remarkably, the size of our sample and the robustness of our statistical approach allow us to attain an unprecedented level of precision over an extended range of mass and velocity scales, with 1{sigma} dispersion around the mean relationships of less than 0.1dex. We thus set new standard local relationships that must be reproduced by detailed physical models, which offer a basis for improving the subgrid recipes in numerical simulations, that provide a benchmark to gauge independent observations and check for systematics, and that constitute a basic step toward the future exploitation of the spiral galaxy population as a cosmological probe.

- We present an atlas of stellar sight line data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite for 287 stars in the Magellanic Clouds, obtained from eight years of satellite operations. The intent of our project is to make this rich ensemble data set accessible to a broad community of researchers in a standardized format that will enable easy identification of subsets of these data that are appropriate for pursuing specific science programs. We present the data in a standardized manner, showing key interstellar lines on a velocity scale, optical (MCELS) and infrared (Spitzer) sight line context images, and overview plots of the spectral region containing the OVI {lambda}{lambda}1032, 1038 doublet, and the entire 905-1187{AA} spectral range observed with FUSE. Objects with multiple observations have had their data summed to directly provide the highest signal-to-noise ratio available. These data are accessible online as a High Level Science Product through the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST). In this article, we describe the data sets and processing, the atlas materials, and the MAST interface in detail, and also provide examples of how to use these materials.

- Based on data from the ESA Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) and several ground-based, multi-band photometry surveys we have compiled an all-sky catalogue of 39800 hot subluminous star candidates selected in Gaia DR2 by means of colour, absolute magnitude, and reduced proper motion cuts. We expect the majority of the candidates to be hot subdwarf stars of spectral type B and O, followed by blue horizontal branch stars of late B-type (HBB), hot post-AGB stars, and central stars of planetary nebulae. The contamination by cooler stars should be about 10%.

- The ESA Gaia mission provides a unique time-domain survey for more than 1.6 billion sources with G<~21mag. We showcase stellar variability in the Galactic colour-absolute magnitude diagram (CaMD).We focus on pulsating, eruptive, and cataclysmic variables, as well as on stars that exhibit variability that is due to rotation and eclipses. We describe the locations of variable star classes, variable object fractions, and typical variability amplitudes throughout the CaMD and show how variability-related changes in colour and brightness induce 'motions'. To do this, we use 22 months of calibrated photometric, spectro-photometric, and astrometric Gaia data of stars with a significant parallax. To ensure that a large variety of variable star classes populate the CaMD, we crossmatched Gaia sources with known variable stars. We also used the statistics and variability detection modules of the Gaia variability pipeline. Corrections for interstellar extinction are not implemented in this article. Gaia enables the first investigation of Galactic variable star populations in the CaMD on a similar, if not larger, scale as was previously done in the Magellanic Clouds. Although the observed colours are not corrected for reddening, distinct regions are visible in which variable stars occur. We determine variable star fractions to within the current detection thresholds of Gaia. Finally, we report the most complete description of variability-induced motion within the CaMD to date. Gaia enables novel insights into variability phenomena for an unprecedented number of stars, which will benefit the understanding of stellar astrophysics. The CaMD of Galactic variable stars provides crucial information on physical origins of variability in a way that has previously only been accessible for Galactic star clusters or external galaxies. Future Gaia data releases will enable significant improvements over this preview by providing longer time series, more accurate astrometry, and additional data types (time series BP and RP spectra, RVS spectra, and radial velocities), all for much larger samples of stars.

- We describe two ground-based observing campaigns aimed at building a grid of approximately 200 spectrophotometric standard stars (SPSS), with an internal =~1% precision and tied to Vega within =~3%, for the absolute flux calibration of data gathered by Gaia, the European Space Agency (ESA) astrometric mission. The criteria for the selection and a list of candidates are presented, together with a description of the survey strategy and the adopted data analysis methods. We also discuss a short list of notable rejected SPSS candidates and difficult cases, based on identification problems, literature discordant data, visual companions and variability. In fact, all candidates are also monitored for constancy (within +/-5mmag, approximately). In particular, we report on a CALSPEC standard, 1740346, that we found to be a {delta} Scuti variable during our short-term monitoring (1-2h) campaign.

- Massive stars have high-multiplicity fractions, and many of them have still undetected components, thus hampering the study of their properties. I study a sample of massive stars with high angular resolution to better characterize their multiplicity. I observed 138 fields that include at least one massive star with AstraLux, a lucky imaging camera at the 2.2m Calar Alto telescope. I also used observations of 3 of those fields with ACS/HRC on HST to obtain complementary information and to calibrate the AstraLux data. The results were compared with existing information from the Washington Double Star Catalog, Tycho-2, 2MASS, and other literature results.

- Despite its fundamental importance, a reliable estimate of the Galactic nova rate has remained elusive. Here, the overall Galactic nova rate is estimated by extrapolating the observed rate for novae reaching m<=2 to include the entire Galaxy using a two component disk plus bulge model for the distribution of stars in the Milky Way. The present analysis improves on previous work by considering important corrections for incompleteness in the observed rate of bright novae and by employing a Monte Carlo analysis to better estimate the uncertainty in the derived nova rates. Several models are considered to account for differences in the assumed properties of bulge and disk nova populations and in the absolute magnitude distribution. The simplest models, which assume uniform properties between bulge and disk novae, predict Galactic nova rates of ~50 to in excess of 100 per year, depending on the assumed incompleteness at bright magnitudes. Models where the disk novae are assumed to be more luminous than bulge novae are explored, and predict nova rates up to 30% lower, in the range of ~35 to ~75 per year. An average of the most plausible models yields a rate of 50_-23_^+31^yr^-1^, which is arguably the best estimate currently available for the nova rate in the Galaxy. Virtually all models produce rates that represent significant increases over recent estimates, and bring the Galactic nova rate into better agreement with that expected based on comparison with the latest results from extragalactic surveys.

- Results of optical, radio, and submillimeter studies of the nearby galaxy cluster A1185 are presented. Coordinates have been obtained for 115 galaxies that are either cluster members or field galaxies in the direction of A1185. Radio spectra for a number of galaxies in this cluster have been derived using observations on the RATAN-600 radio telescope at 2.7,3.9,7.6, and 31 cm, together with data published in other study. At the cluster center some of the galaxies have either flat or inverted spectra.
