- We present Keck NIRSPEC and Keck NIRES spectroscopy of sixteen metal-poor galaxies that have pre-existing optical observations. The near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy specifically targets the HeI{lambda}10830{AA} emission line, due to its sensitivity to the physical conditions of the gas in HII regions. We use these NIR observations, combined with optical spectroscopy, to determine the helium abundance of sixteen galaxies across a metallicity range 12+log_10_(O/H)=7.13-8.00. This data set is combined with two other samples where metallicity and helium abundance measurements can be secured: star-forming galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic database, and existing low-metallicity systems in the literature. We calculate a linear fit to these measurements, accounting for intrinsic scatter, and report a new determination of the primordial helium number abundance, y_P_=0.0805_-0.0017_^+0.0017^, which corresponds to a primordial helium mass fraction Y_P_=0.2436_-0.0040_^+0.0039^. Using our determination of the primordial helium abundance in combination with the latest primordial deuterium measurement, (D/H)_P_x10^5^=2.527+/-0.030, we place a bound on the baryon density {Omega}_b_h^2^=0.0215_-0.0005_^+0.0005^ and the effective number of neutrino species N_eff_=2.85_-0.25_^+0.28^. These values are in 1.3{sigma} agreement with those deduced from the Planck satellite observations of the temperature fluctuations imprinted on the cosmic microwave background.

- We present a catalog of compact sources derived from the QUaD Galactic Plane Survey. The survey covers ~800deg^2^ of the inner galaxy (|b|<4{deg}) in Stokes I, Q, and U parameters at 100 and 150GHz, with angular resolutions of 5 and 3.5 arcmin, respectively. Five hundred and twenty-six unique sources are identified in I, of which 239 are spatially matched between frequency bands, with 53 (234) detected at 100 (150)GHz alone; 170 sources are identified as ultracompact HII regions. Four sources are detected in polarized intensity P, of which three have matching counterparts in I. Three of the polarized sources lie close to the Galactic center, Sagittarius A*, Sagittarius B2, and the Galactic Radio Arc, while the fourth is RCW 49, a bright HII region. An extended polarized source, undetected by the source extraction algorithm on account of its ~0.5{deg} size, is identified visually, and is an isolated example of large-scale polarized emission oriented distinctly from the bulk Galactic dust polarization.

- We offer to the star formation community the third installment of the Massive Star-forming Regions (MSFRs) Omnibus X-ray Catalog (MOXC3), a compilation of X-ray point sources detected in 50 archival Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer observations of 14 Galactic MSFRs and surrounding fields. The MOXC3 MSFRs are NGC2264, NGC6193, RCW108-IR, AurOB1, DR15, NGC6231, Berkeley87, NGC6357, AFGL4029, hPer (NGC869), NGC281, Onsala2S, G305, and RCW49 (Wd2); they have distances of 0.7-4.2kpc. Most exhibit clumped or clustered young stellar populations; several contain at least two distinct massive young stellar clusters. The total MOXC3 catalog includes 27923 X-ray point sources. We take great care to identify even the faintest X-ray point sources across these fields. This allows us to remove this point source light, revealing diffuse X-ray structures that pervade and surround MSFRs, often generated by hot plasmas from massive star feedback. As we found in MOXC1 and MOXC2, diffuse X-ray emission is traceable in all MOXC3 MSFRs; here we perform spectral fitting to investigate the origins of selected diffuse regions. Once again, MOXC3 shows the value of high spatial resolution X-ray studies of MSFRs enabled by Chandra.

- The Red MSX Source Survey: massive protostars

- We present the Red MSX Source survey, the largest statistically selected catalog of young massive protostars and H II regions to date. We outline the construction of the catalog using mid- and near-infrared color selection. We also discuss the detailed follow up work at other wavelengths, including higher spatial resolution data in the infrared. We show that within the adopted selection bounds we are more than 90% complete for the massive protostellar population, with a positional accuracy of the exciting source of better than 2 arcsec. We briefly summarize some of the results that can be obtained from studying the properties of the objects in the catalog as a whole; we find evidence that the most massive stars form: (1) preferentially nearer the Galactic center than the anti-center; (2) in the most heavily reddened environments, suggestive of high accretion rates; and (3) from the most massive cloud cores.

- The ISOPHOT experiment onboard the ISO satellite generated a complete view of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) at 170{mu}m with 1.5arcmin resolution. The map is analysed using an automated photometry program enabling accurate photometric characterization of the far infrared (FIR) emitting regions. In this paper, the sources detected at 170{mu}m are compared with those obtainable from the IRAS satellite data. For this purpose, the 12{mu}m, 25{mu}m, 60{mu}m, and 100{mu}m IRAS high resolution (HiRes) maps of the SMC are re-examined using the same method. In contrast to former studies, this provides an all-band ISO/IRAS source catalog which is no longer based on eyeball classification, but relies on an algorithm which is capable of automated, repeatable photometry, even for irregular sources. In the mid infrared IRAS bands numerous bright FIR emitting regions in the SMC are detected and classified: 73 sources are found at 12{mu}m, 135 at 25{mu}m (most of them with F{nu}<1.0Jy). All three FIR bands at 170{mu}m, 100{mu}m, and 60{mu}m reproduce the overall morphological structure of the SMC similarly well, in contrast to the 12{mu}m and 25{mu}m maps which only contain a limited number of extended sources and do not trace the main body of the SMC. 243 sources are detected in the ISO 170{mu}m map, 155 of them with F{nu}>=2.0Jy. Comparable numbers are found for the two FIR IRAS maps at 60{mu}m (384) and 100{mu}m (338) with fluxes up to 450Jy. 70 of the 243 170{mu}m sources are assigned a general SED type (cold , warm , i.e., <30K, >30K) for the first time. A comparison with earlier IRAS results suggests that many source flux densities in those studies have been under- or overestimated because of non-standardized fitting methods. Many sources with flux densities up to 40Jy listed in former catalogs cannot be identified in our data.

- Young open clusters are ideal laboratories to understand the star formation process. We present deep UBVI and H{alpha} photometry for the young open cluster IC1590 in the center of the HII region NGC281. Early-type members are selected from UBV photometric diagrams, and low-mass pre-main-sequence (PMS) members are identified by using H{alpha} photometry. In addition, the published X-ray source list and Gaia astrometric data are also used to isolate probable members. A total of 408 stars are selected as members. The mean reddening obtained from early-type members is <E(B-V)>=0.40{+/-}0.06(s.d.). We confirm the abnormal extinction law for the intracluster medium. The distance modulus to the cluster determined from the zero-age main-sequence fitting method is 12.3{+/-}0.2mag (d=2.88{+/-}0.28kpc), which is consistent with the distance d=2.70_-0.20_^+0.24^kpc from the recent Gaia parallaxes. We also estimate the ages and masses of individual members by means of stellar evolutionary models. The mode of the age of PMS stars is about 0.8Myr. The initial mass function of IC1590 is derived. It appears to be a steeper shape ({Gamma}=-1.49{+/-}0.14) than that of the Salpeter/Kroupa initial mass function for the high-mass regime (m>1M{sun}). The signature of mass segregation is detected from the difference in the slopes of the initial mass functions for the inner (r<2.5') and outer regions of this cluster. We finally discuss the star formation history in NGC281.

- Using data from the all-sky Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite, we made a catalog of over 8000 Galactic HII regions and HII region candidates by searching for their characteristic mid-infrared (MIR) morphology. WISE has sufficient sensitivity to detect the MIR emission from H II regions located anywhere in the Galactic disk. We believe this is the most complete catalog yet of regions forming massive stars in the Milky Way. Of the ~8000 cataloged sources, ~1500 have measured radio recombination line (RRL) or H{alpha} emission, and are thus known to be H II regions. This sample improves on previous efforts by resolving H II region complexes into multiple sources and by removing duplicate entries. There are ~2500 candidate H II regions in the catalog that are spatially coincident with radio continuum emission. Our group's previous RRL studies show that ~95% of such targets are H II regions. We find that ~500 of these candidates are also positionally associated with known H II region complexes, so the probability of their being bona fide H II regions is even higher. At the sensitivity limits of existing surveys, ~4000 catalog sources show no radio continuum emission. Using data from the literature, we find distances for ~1500 catalog sources, and molecular velocities for ~1500H II region candidates.

- Triggered star formation in SFO 38

- We have investigated the young stellar population in and around SFO 38, one of the massive globules located in the northern part of the Galactic HII region IC 1396, using the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations (3.6-24um), and followed up with ground-based optical photometric and spectroscopic observations. Based on the IRAC and MIPS colors and H{alpha} emission, we identify ~45 young stellar objects (Classes 0/I/II) and 13 probable pre-main-sequence candidates. We derive the spectral types (mostly K- and M-type stars), effective temperatures, and individual extinction of the relatively bright and optically visible Class II objects. Using the width of the H{alpha} emission line measured at 10% peak intensity, we derive the mass accretion rates of individual objects to be between 10^-10^ and 10^-8^M_{sun}_/yr.

- Our aim is to determine the distance of outer Galaxy star-forming complexes in order to model the kinematic structure of our Galaxy. We searched for exciting star(s) of HII regions, with poor or unknown stellar distance, in the second and third galactic quadrants. We carried out spectroscopic and photometric (when necessary) observations in order to establish their spectral type and their U, B and V magnitudes. From these data, complemented with literature data, we determine the spectro-photometric distance of their associated complexes.

- This work presents UBV photometry of the stellar populations associated with seven superbubble nebulae and five classical H II regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Although the nebular morphology of the superbubbles appears to be substantially evolved compared to the classical nebulae, the color-magnitude diagrams do not reveal any noticeable correlation between the resident stellar population and nebular morphology. The photometry presented here will be used in a forthcoming paper to examine further the stellar content and dynamics of these superbubbles.
